13:00 OPERA IN MINIATURE
Prepared by Elaine Siversen Gluck, C. Der Betrogene Kadi. Opera in one act. Libretto by Pierre-René Lemonnier. First performed Vienna, 1786. KADI: Walter Berry, bass bar FATIMA: Anneliese Rothenberger, sop ZELMIRE: Helen Donath, sop NURADIN: Nicolai Gadda, ten OMAR: Klaus Hirte, bar OMEGA: Regina Marheineke, sop Bavarian State Opera Ch & O/Otmar Suitner. EMI 4 64319 2 49 The Kadi (or Qadi), a Muslim judge, desires Zelmire (whom he has never seen) in preference to his wife Fatima. As Zelmire has rejected him, he has ordered her to be married to a poor man so that she would live in poverty. The groom, Nuradin, is in fact not indignant because he has deceived the Kadi about his finances in order to be able to marry Zelmire. She seeks revenge on the Kadi by arranging for him to take Omega, a less-attractive woman, as his new wife. Zelmire arranges for the Kadi to visit and sends Nuradin away. Disguised as Omega, she tells the Kadi that she is consulting him because her father Omar forbids her to marry. The Kadi falls for the story, and for the disguised Zelmire, and summons Omar. Amazed that anyone (much less the Kadi) is interested in his daughter, Omar asks for a substantial dowry. Fatima is angered when the Kadi declares that he has divorced her. The wedding to Omega is about to take place, but the Kadi is enraged when he sees the real Omega rather than the pretended one. Then Zelmire and Nuradin reveal the deception. Omega is disappointed, and the Kadi and Fatima reunite. Cui, C. A feast in time of plague. Dramatic setting in one act of Alexander Pushkin’s play, Little tragedy. First performed, Moscow, 1901. WALSINGHAM: Andrei Baturkin, bar YOUNG MAN: Alexei Martinov, ten MARY: Ludmila Kuznetsova, mezz LOUISA: Tatiana Sharova, sop PRIEST: Dmitri Stepanovich, bass Russian State SO/Valery Polyansky. Chandos CHAN 10201 32 During a feast, a Young Man raises a glass asking all present to toast one of their friends who has recently died from the plague. Instead, Walsingham calls for a moment of silence as a more fitting remembrance. He then requests Mary to sing a sad song before they resume their merriment. Her song touches him deeply but Louisa, in a cynical rant, says that Mary is just playing on his emotions. Interrupted by the creaking sounds of a deadcart passing by, Louisa faints. When she recovers, she wonders whether she was only dreaming about the cart. The Young Man asks Walsingham to sing something about the plague. Walsingham responds with a hymn but the Priest enters, chastising the merrymakers for disrespecting the dead. He begs them to leave and attempts to shame Walsingham by bringing up the memory of the latter's recently deceased mother and wife. Walsingham sends the Priest away but remains lost in thought. The feasters return with the distant sounds of a funeral procession as the background to their feasting.

Prepared by Elaine Siversen Sullivan, A. The Yeomen of the Guard. Operetta in two acts. Libretto by W.S. Gilbert. First performed London, 1888. COLONEL FAIRFAX: Neill Archer, ten WILFRED SHADBOLT: Donald Maxwell, bass PHOEBE MERYLL: Pamela Helen Stephen, sop LEONARD MERYLL: Peter Hoare, ten SERGEANT MERYLL: Donald Adams, bass ELSIE MAYNARD: Alwyn Mellor, sop JACK POINT: Richard Suart, bass DAME CARRUTHERS: Felicity Palmer, sop Welsh National Opera Ch & O/Charles Mackerras. Telarc 2CD-80404 1:30 Colonel Fairfax is to be beheaded that day for the crime of sorcery. Wilfred, the head gaoler at the Tower of London, is in love with Phoebe. Phoebe’s brother, Leonard, has been appointed a Yeoman of the Guard. Their father, Sergeant Merryll, is anxious to rescue Fairfax who had twice saved his life in battle. He plans that Phoebe will get the key to the Fairfax’s cell from Wilfred while Leonard and Fairfax will exchange identities. The charge of sorcery against Fairfax was made by his wicked cousin, Sir Clarence Poltwhistle, who will inherit his estate if he dies unmarried. Before he dies, Fairfax asks that be allowed to marry any available woman who will receive 100 crowns for her assistance. His request is granted. A young singer, Elsie, needs money to buy medicine for her ailing mother. She is offered the chance to earn 100 18
crowns for marrying the condemned man. Her companion, a jester, Jack Point, wishes to marry Elsie but is assured that she will be widowed very quickly. Elsie is blindfolded and led off for the secret ceremony. Meanwhile Phoebe distracts Wilfred and steals his keys which she gives to her father who goes to free Fairfax. Sergeant Meryll disguises Fairfax as his son Leonard. All is ready for the execution. Wilfred, Fairfax (disguised as Leonard) and two Yeomen go to fetch Fairfax. They return and Fairfax announces his own disappearance. Point is distraught at the escape of Elsie's husband, Wilfred is blamed, and all rush off to hunt for Fairfax. Jack Point reveals the secret wedding to Wilfred and convinces him to swear that he shot Fairfax dead as he swam across the river to escape. Wilfred agrees to save his own skin. Fairfax discovers the identity of his secret bride and, disguised as Leonard, attempts to woo her but is rejected. He is about to reveal himself when a shot is heard. Wilfred and Point declare that Wilfred has shot Fairfax so Point asks Elsie to marry him. Fairfax (still disguised as Leonard) instructs Point in the art of wooing but it soon becomes clear that he is wooing Elsie for himself and Elsie is responding. Angry and hurt, Phoebe inadvertently reveals to Wilfred that ‘Leonard’ is in fact Fairfax. In her remorse, she agrees to marry Wilfred if he remains silent. The real Leonard then returns and announces that a reprieve has come for Fairfax. When Elsie arrives for her wedding to ‘Leonard’, she learns that Fairfax lives. Fairfax arrives but the distraught Elsie does not turn to see his face. He keeps up the pretence until Elsie begs for her freedom to go to ‘Leonard’ but he refuses. Finally Elsie turns to see his face and finally recognises him. Everyone is happy except the broken-hearted Jack Point. Suite no 1 from Victoria and Merrie England (1897). Royal PO/Royston Nash. Philips 473 851-2 2:40 The female slave Dardane, a confidante of Rezia, Princess of Persia, tries to charm Ali, Prince of Balsóra, to test his love for Rezia who is the harem favourite of the Sultan of Egypt. Ali and his female slave, Osmin, are surprised when Rezia enters and the three women tell of the unfortunate travels that brought them to Cairo. Osmin asks the dervish Calandro for his help in allowing Ali and Rezia to escape together. Plans are made for the escape and, when the sultan returns unexpectedly from the hunt, all flee via a secret staircase. The Sultan offers a reward for the recovery of Rezia. Calandro decides to betray them to win the bounty. Ali disguises himself as a French painter to avoid arrest, but to no avail. However, the Sultan pardons Ali and Rezia, gives them his blessing and condemns the treacherous Calandro. At the couple's request, Calandro is pardoned but banished from Cairo.

Prepared by James Nightingale Caldara, A. Il più bel nome. Opera in one act. Libretto by Pietro Pariati. First performed Barcelona, 1708. VENERE: Maria Espada, sop PARIDE: Robin Blaze, ct GIUNONE: Raquel Andueza, sop ERCOLE: Mariane Beate Kielland, mezz IL FATO: Agustin Prunell-Friend, ten El Concierto Español/Emilio Moreno. Glossa GCD 920310 1:57 [The most beautiful name]. This serenata was written in praise of the new wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, Elisabeth Christine who does not make an appearance in the serenata. Venus, Paris, Juno and Hercules each take turns to make a case for the importance of love, beauty, wisdom and strength, the casting vote being made by Fate. Just as all have rested their cases, Fate announces that another goddess is set to capture their praises, revealing that this is none other than Elisabeth Christine. All declare loyalty to Elisabeth and sing her praises in solo, duet and ensemble arias. After Fate reaffirms the supremacy of the Queen, everyone joins together in a hymn of praise to her. EMI CMS 7 64394 2 1:37 The Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive in Venice from Spain with their daughter Casilda who, as a baby, was married to the son and heir of the King of Barataria. The infant prince was taken by Don Alhambra to Venice and, as the King has died, the hidden prince is now king. Casilda is now the reigning queen of Barataria but she is secretly in love with Luiz, the Duke's drummer. Don Alhambra explains that the prince was raised by the gondolier, Baptisto Palmieri, a drunkard, who eventually forgot which boy was his own son and which boy was the prince. The two boys, Marco and Giuseppe, are now gondoliers. They have just married Tessa and Gianetta respectively. Don Alhambra informs them that one of them is the King of Barataria, but no one knows which. The gondoliers agree to go to Barataria at once, acting as one individual until the actual king is identified. Don Alhambra neglects to mention that the King is married to Casilda. In Barataria Don Alhambra breaks the news that one of the gondoliers had married Casilda when they were babies and therefore is an unintentional bigamist. The Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive with Casilda and Luiz. Don Alhambra finds the nurse who cared for the young prince. She happens to be Luiz's mother. She hid the prince and gave Don Alhambra her own son instead. Thus, the king is neither Marco nor Giuseppe, but Luiz. Casilda finds that she is already married to the man she loves and the two gondoliers surrender their crown to Luiz and, although a little disappointed that neither will be a king, they can return happily to Venice with their wives.
