ello and welcome to the latest issue of Fine Sussex and Surrey. I can’t tell you how glad I am that spring has arrived. DESIGN & PRODUCTION

And what could be a better way of celebrating than with our weddings issue? Surely there is nothing more positive and optimistic than two people standing up and pledging their eternal love for one another? If you’re planning a wedding, we hope you find inspiration in these pages. Take a look at what the Edge of the Florist is up to, bringing back scented flowers to fill your wedding with sweet perfume. I had a lot of fun looking at substitutes for the traditional sit-down wedding breakfast with our alternative wedding food feature. Also in this issue, we’ve pulled together some of the most scientifically groundbreaking skincare developed by top dermatologists. Wedding flowers with fragrance Have you ever noticed that flowers don’t seem to smell anymore? Where once beautiful floral displays would oer an assault on the senses, they rarely perfume a room in the way they once did. The team behind The Edge of the Florist have certainly noticed and are dedicated to creating floral displays that are a treat for the nose as well as the eyes. 8 | fine

There is nothing better than a real scented garden rose, in my opinion...

T

he Edge of the Florist create something a little different. Recognising that we can all buy flowers in virtually every supermarket and garage, Beverly Vos, the entrepreneur behind The Edge of the Florist chooses to focus on a more natural ‘real flowers’ approach.. Beverly says: “Remember in times past flowers had perfume? There is nothing better than a real scented garden rose, in my opinion, so we focus on perfumed roses and flowers, scented foliage and herbs. Most of our arrangements have a combination of scented and unscented flowers (try as one might one will never achieve a fragrant Campanula), scented foliage such as lavender and eucalyptus and herbs such as sage, sorrel, mint, rosemary and thyme. “I’ve always believed that formal flowers have their place but after living for a number of years in the heart of the Surrey countryside, my preferred style is to arrange flowers in a natural way. Flowers and foliage, (without the interference of wires), that move, stand, curve and sway naturally… as they appear in nature and as we lovingly remember them in our gardens and hedgerows.” Beverly’s expert team are on hand to help you choose your perfect wedding flowers. Her experienced florists will guide you through the practical matters – the formality of the event, the venue, the season and expected weather, your gown and your budget – which will play a major role in your choice of flower varieties, colours and quantities. As Beverly puts it: “Weddings are

like a symphony – all parts need to be balanced and play in harmony to produce the most wonderful magical day which you will remember forever.” At your consultation, your florist will make choices that will blend seamlessly with the style of your wedding. The level of formality of your wedding, whether white tie, on a beach or anything in between, should set the standard for the entire affair, including your flowers. For example, if you’re having a black tie affair in a ballroom, the Edge recommends considering classical flowers such as roses, lilies, orchids, amaryllis and traditional foliage’s, perhaps in a white/silver/green palette or one of ivory and pale gold tones. Semi-formal and country or beach weddings have a freer, more casual feeling to them and the colour palette and form of flowers, from your bouquet through to dressing the Wedding Breakfast space, offers a wide variety of alternatives. In addition to the beautiful flowers, The Edge of the Florist Studio at Smithbrook Kilns on the A281 between Horsham and Guildford, showcases a wonderful collection of gifts for birthdays, weddings, engagements and any other special (or entirely nonspecial) occasion. Gifts include Vera Wang champagne flutes, Venetian jewellery only available at the Edge, or the finest cashmere pashminas adorned with crystals. For more information or to discuss your wedding with Beverly and her team visit www.theedgeoftheflorist.com or call 01483277177.

A Sussex Pub

Wedding‌ Plenty of us have spent some of the happiest moments of our lives in pubs. They are places where it’s easy to relax, to be with friends, to forget the world for a while. Those three qualities should figure quite high on your list of wants for a place to hold your special day. 20 | fine

T

h e Three Crowns in Wisborough Green is a grade II listed Village Inn and garden offering excellent service with an in-house events coordinator on hand to help you through your whole wedding planning process. The Three Crowns perfectly combines the friendly atmosphere of a traditional pub with all the sophistication of a refined dining room. Seasonal menus can be tailored to all dietary requirements with simple, hearty and flavoursome food on offer using the freshest local ingredients. Select from a variety of dishes and complement them with the finest wines from our extensive wine list. Whether you want a traditional wedding breakfast, afternoon tea or a more relaxed BBQ or Hog roast, The Three Crowns is the perfect pub venue for the couple who are looking for a unique and bespoke experience. You and your guests will enjoy high quality catering and picture-perfect surroundings too at your wedding. There are immaculately tended gardens surrounding the pretty Grade II Listed building as well as the quintessential village green setting that will look striking in your wedding photographs. Inside the pub offers rustic oak beamed spaces with stunning eclectic décor. The dining room can seat up to 60 guests or for larger weddings the gardens are an amazing spot for summer celebrations in a marquee or Tipi.

The proximity to the Village Church of Saint Peter Ad Vincula, would take the wedding party on a walk down past the duckpond, a perfect place to stop for photographs before reaching the pub. The Three Crowns Inn also makes a stunning winter wedding venue too with its roaring log fires and cosy interior. The gardens are not ignored either as every year during December they become home to Nordic style Tipis, fairy lit and heated throughout, the tipis by Beautiful World Tents, offer a unique magical experience. The Winter wonderland Wedding experience is very popular, offering a self contained space for dining around an open fire, with a dance floor and bar. It was here that local residents Emma & Ian decided to celebrate their wedding in December 2016. After a summer ceremony they decided upon a Winter wonderland style celebration for all their friends and family in the heart of the village. As regular guests wanted to combine the delicious pub menu whilst creating a unique experience for their family and friends. Having attended a Festive Feasting Christmas party the previous year they wanted to create the same atmosphere for their special day. Champagne flowed as the guests arrived to the roaring log fire and stunning fairy lit interior of the tents. Guests dined

on a delicious feast of Roast Beef with Yorkshire puddings with crispy roast potatoes and winter vegetables seated at rustic tresles, adorned with reindeer hides, guests dined around the warm glow of the open fire. The couple decided on a delicious savoury stack of cheese decorated with fresh grapes and figs as well as a traditional wedding cake. After the feasting, speeches flowed alongside tears with not a dry eye on the house it was time to take to the dancefloor with live music from a local band. The rustic wooden pop up bar was serving local G&Ts and handpicked craft Ales, and the celebrations continued into the night. What a perfect way to celebrate a marriage, surrounded by friends and family at Christmas. The Magical setting of The Tipi’s at The Three Crowns was the backdrop to Emma & Ian’s perfect day. Beautiful

wood

If you’re looking for the perfect way to finish off a newly decorated room and can’t decide on what to hang on the walls, Carved Wall Art offers that “something different” that you will love and that will keep guests talking and admiring your home for years to come. 24 | fine

A

s the name suggests, Carved Wall Art creates stunning, contemporary carved wooden art. The products are extremely tactile and beautifully finished. Choose from the extensive catalogue, from the unique, abstract ‘Melting Wood’ to popular ‘Winter Trees’. The Carved Wall Art is offered with a beautiful lacquered finish to a high standard, creating an effortless natural art that makes an impact in any living space, the multi-faceted reflections of light and the attractive, mesmerising designs draw the eye, making them stand out providing an eye-catching statement piece. Each individual piece is made to order, meaning standard sizes can be customised to perfectly suit your space for both size and finish. The artwork comes delivered to your door, beautifully boxed and ready to hang without the need for additional framing. The unique, three-dimensional carved designs also lend themselves perfectly to commercial areas. Whether it’s a reception area in an office, a boardroom, or somewhere like a hotel lobby, not only is the art beautiful and eye-catching but it also adds a chic, contemporary feel to a space – instantly brightening up a wall. There are four standard collections available. The muted, subtle tones within the Natural Collection blend perfectly with many modern interiors. Designs in the Coloured Collection add a pop of colour and can tie in with other colours in the room or even pick out the colour in your company logo. The MoKKa Oak and Veneered Collections offer endless possibilities in many designs too.

Several contrasting pieces in different colours grouped together on one wall make an interesting feature and spotlights really help show the different textures to best effect. Where possible, materials used are responsibly sourced, the MoKKa range uses a baking process rather than harmful chemicals or dyes and the rubber content of the Cork rubber makes use of both natural and recycled rubber. Carved Wall Art’s workshop and gallery is situated on the main A281 between Guildford and Horsham in West Sussex where you are welcome to visit to view the Carved Wall Art on display.

Skincare

by scientists

Some swear by soap and water, but the secret for skincare perfection is in the science. Fine Editor, Catherine Ross, rounds up the best high-performing skin saviours to take your skin into spring.

Alpha H Beauty Sleep Power Peel

Perricone MD Cold Plasma

If you haven’t already come across Alpha H and its iconic Liquid Gold, it’s time to educate yourself. This Australian brand uses some serious science to transform skin through its pioneering use of glycolic acid in skincare. Alpha H products gently, but effectively, resurface skin to treat everything from fine lines to adult acne.

Dermatologist and nutritionist Dr Perricone has conducted exhaustive studies into the benefits of essential fatty acids and created his eponymously titled, high-powered skincare range as a result of his research.

Beauty Sleep Power Peel is a rich, rejuvenating once-a-week alternative to your night cream. It works while you’re sleeping to kick-start cells to promote the production of collagen, elastin and moisture-retaining glycosaminoglycan. Get ready to feel your face tingle when you put it on and wake up looking fresher and younger than yesterday.

26 | fine

The Cold Plasma gel-cream might sound like something Dracula would drink for breakfast, but in fact delivers a supercharged shot of cellular nutrition to lift, firm, tone and tighten, neutralise free radical activity and bolsters skin’s defences. Be warned, it’s not the most pleasant smelling of face creams, but after using the product for a while, but it is genuinely effective at restoring youth and moisture to tired skin.

Goldfaden MD Fresh A Peel and Needle Less Leading dermatologist, Dr Goldfaden uses the power of plants to create beauty-salon standard products that are suitable for use at home. If you like the idea of botox but don’t like needles (or the weird frozen expression patients get when treated by sub-standard practitioners), NeedleLess is the product for you. It combines hyaluronic acid with hexapeptides to “diminish visibility of wrinkles and inhibit micro-muscular contractions”. Over time, expect to see a reduction in fine lines and even some of those deep-set creases. For a fresh and glowing complexion, you need to get rid of those dead skin cells that clog pores and dull your natural glow. That’s where Fresh A Peel comes in. Gently tingly, this gel will remove dead cells and stimulate regeneration of new ones, restoring your youthful radiance.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum Dr Murad is a dermatologist and pharmacist who has treated over 50,000 patients and developed a pioneering, award winning skincare range over 25 years. If you’re not already using a serum as part of your skincare regime, it’s time you started. More concentrated than moisturisers, this range of products target specific issues associated with aging skin and work hard. Murad’s latest addition is no exception. As the name suggests, it uses retinol to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while helping to firm and even skin tone. It also smells fantastic and is a real treat to apply.

Dr Jackson 06 Body Perfecting Gel Of course, it’s not just our faces that need a little TLC from time to time. The skin is the biggest organ in the body and needs some love and attention, particularly at this time of year. Dr Jackson is a specialist in pharmacognosy; the study of traditional, nature-derived medicine. His products use all natural ingredients. Body Perfecting Gel is no exception. The formulation is light and refreshing and almost instantly absorbed, so it is quick and easy to use after the shower and before getting dressed, even on a busy morning. It claims to stimulate skin repair and to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and even cellulite over time, but even if it doesn’t achieve the Holy Grail, it’s a great, indulgent moisturiser suitable for use every day.

Annual Tulip Festival returns to Arundel Castle Arundel Castle has welcomed back its unique Annual Tulip Festival, with visitors being wowed by all things bright and beautiful this April and May. 28 | fine

T

his year’s Festival will be bigger and bolder than ever before with more than 38,000 tulips adorning the enchanting gardens of the West Sussex Castle which is celebrating the 950th anniversary of its initial construction this year. The blooms will flower throughout the Castle’s highly-acclaimed gardens, bringing dazzling pops of colour to the Maze and the Rill Pond in the Collector Earl’s Garden in particular. This is the first time that so many tulips have been planted in the Maze, creating a labyrinth of 8,000 stunning red blooms, the first display of its kind in the country. One of the largest inhabited and complete castles in England, Arundel Castle was founded at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel and today is the family home of the 18th Duke of Norfolk. As visitors approach the Castle they will be met with classic tulips, vibrant against the backdrop of the medieval building. Alongside red, purple, pink and white are also prominent colours in this year’s display, which boasts 70 different types of tulips - some of which visitors may never have seen before. Although an annual event, different varieties of tulips are introduced every year to ensure visitors are always faced with fresh and exciting flower mixes. New for 2017 is the beautiful White Dream tulip which sits among striking black flowers known as Queen of Nights within the English Herbaceous Borders. As visitors wander round the blossoming grounds they’ll also be met with a selection of unusual tulip varieties such as Yoko Parrot and Candy Club as well as an amazing array of vibrant mixed tulips.

Head Gardener Martin Duncan, who has worked in horticulture and landscape design roles around the world, has been tending to Arundel Castle’s gardens for seven years. He said: “This is always a hugely popular event that draws in international crowds. Months of planning go into organising the Annual Tulip Festival. In fact, I’ve already started planning for next year! “Visitors can expect to see a breathtaking display of tulips which are as unique and colourful as their names suggest - Purple Dream, Purple Prince, Pink Impression and White Triumphator. I hope visitors will enjoy browsing the gardens as much as myself and the rest of the Castle gardening team do.” Green-fingered enthusiasts should also take time to visit during May and June when eruptions of brightly-coloured, pom-pom headed Alliums explode into flower and tower above neighbouring plants as part of the Allium Extravaganza.

24 hours in

Lancaster

You will have driven past it, perhaps on the way to The Lakes or Scotland, but like a maiden aunt, Lancaster has been overlooked for too long. It will be more than worth your while stopping the next time you head up the M6, or, better still, making a special journey. 32 | fine

I

f you’ve never been you won’t realise that Lancaster is what the showbiz world would call a triple threat – a charming city, with coast and countryside all on its doorstep. No longer famous for manufacturing linoleum as part of the industrial north, this city now trades on its history and perfect position close to coastal town, Morecambe, and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Forest of Bowland.

Where to stay If it was good enough for Coco… A mere 10 minutes drive from the historic centre of Lancaster is The Midland, facing out into Morecambe Bay. This sweeping, sparkling Art Deco triumph was rescued from dereliction with an £11m refurbishment just 10 years ago and is rumoured to have been visited by Coco Chanel and Noel Coward. I could wax lyrical about the attention to detail in this wonderful building, but I’ll limit myself to just a few highlights. Never before have I gasped at hotel storage. That’s right, although the view from our second floor room (one of just 44) was spectacular, the clever storage, including a hidden toilet, was a wonder to behold. Outside of the stylish rooms one can’t help but be swept away, not just by the wind, though Morecambe is windy, but the imposing views of The Lake District from both the Rotunda bar and Sun Terrace restaurant. The food is pretty impressive too. A menu filled with fresh seasonal produce and, of course, Morecambe Bay Shrimp, is accompanied by a varied and thoughtful wine list. If you prefer to be closer to Lancaster, try The Midland’s sister hotel, Lancaster House, which also boasts a leisure club that residents of The Midland can use.

What to do Lancaster Castle Take a guided tour of the only modern prison to have ever been operated from within a castle. Although originally a Medieval castle, a fact obvious from its imposing twin towered gatehouse and commanding position, the castle now serves as both a criminal and civil court as well as a tourist attraction, the prison having closed unexpectedly in 2011. Visitors can marvel at the 650 shields displayed in the civil court room, bearing the crests of every Constable of the castle and High Sherriff of Lancaster since the first one was appointed, and learn about the invention of Pilates by Joseph Pilates while he was an inmate at the prison.

door to the shop) and The Music Room on Sun Square. Plans are also afoot for a new venue in the centre of Manchester, due to open later this year. Watching coffee brew in a siphon is like observing a chemistry experiment, with precise boiling and measuring worthy of a laboratory. The result is the purity of a filter coffee with the intensity of a cafetière. No wonder the Atkinson & Co team has won awards.

The castle is perhaps best known for its link to the most famous witch trials in England, the Pendle Witches, which saw twenty people convicted of witchcraft in 1612. The tour includes both the ancient parts of the castle, the working court rooms (if they are not sitting on the day) and a walk through one of the more modern prison wings.

Ian’s commitment to his craft extends throughout the business, from the coffee cans in the shop next door – selling both wholesale and retail and operating since 1837 – to the 50 year old hand-turned roaster he fires up for the latest roasting as we leave, sending billowing smoke out of the window and onto the street, wafting toffee popcorn aromas throughout the cleverly dubbed “coffee quarter”. Each Atkinson & Co location also serves a selection of freshly made sandwiches, with The Hall boasting a bakery in the building, serving up delectable cakes too good to miss.

Fenwick Arms, Claughton Lancaster Brewery Tour One of two breweries in the city, Lancaster Brewery joined the real ale revolution pretty early, having been established more than 10 years ago. Once a garden centre, the current brewery site is now home to both the brewery and brewery tap, using 17 tonnes of Lincolnshire Malt to brew 200 brewer’s barrels of beer every week. The tour takes you behind the scenes, smelling and tasting the critical ingredients, seeing the yeast doing its work and learning about Burtonisation – the adjustment of the mineral content in water to ensure a consistent brew. You can sample Lancaster ales all over the city, but The Sun, also owned by the brewery, is a great place to enjoy a few pints, or even to spend the night in one of their well-appointed bedrooms

Where to eat and drink

A short drive from the centre of Lancaster in the Forest of Bowland is gastro-pub with rooms, the AA 4-star Fenwick Arms. If you have time and inclination you can do an eight-mile circular walk from the pub and then enjoy three courses guilt-free. If you also want to do more than sample the available drinks – more than 10 gins all served with Fever Tree tonic along with a series of real ales – then book one of the chic rooms in the building behind the pub and simply stumble up to bed. Famed for its seafood, the seasonal and locally-sourced award-winning menu has something for everyone. We enjoyed a light lunch of sharing platters which all arrived beautifully presented and freshly cooked.

Atkinson & Co Coffee alchemist Ian’s eyes gleam as he tells me about the siphon that sparked his love affair with coffee and became the inspiration for him buying Atkinson & Co with wife Sue. He rescued the 1920s model about to be thrown away by his parents and now proudly serves coffee made in Cona siphons (made in Guildford) or glass Chemex, as well as the more familiar coffee bar at its two Lancaster locations, The Hall on China Street (next

y 2020, one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives, and it is not just the individual who needs support, but relatives and friends as well. Every year the Fountain Centre helps over 2,500 newly diagnosed cancer patients and their loved ones to live with cancer. The Fountain Centre is an independent charity located in the St Luke’s cancer unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford for cancer patients and their families from the initial cancer diagnosis until treatment finishes and beyond. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer they often find themselves in a state of shock with their lives spiraling out of control, not knowing where to turn. We provide information, counselling and complementary therapies, in a calming and relaxed atmosphere, allowing patients to make informed choices and regain control of their future. We also have a wig bank, a lending library, and can provide information about local support groups, welfare benefits and a host of specialist cancer charities. In April 2016 we launched a pilot project employing a Children’s Counsellor to work with families affected by a cancer diagnosis. Demand has been huge – 24% of cancer patients have young families – and we are now urgently seeking funds to extend the service on a permanent basis. Educating the whole person What particularly strikes visitors to Hurst College is the vibrant, dynamic community and the importance placed on an all-round, as well as a core, academic education. Above all else nobody is ‘beneath the radar’ or ‘on the bench’, rather each child will be an active member of the community and enabled to realise their potential – academic and otherwise.

T

his outward-looking approach allows pupils to try new ventures, confront risks and learn from experience. Pupils are encouraged and challenged to make the most of the talents that lie within them and the huge opportunities which are available at the college – and are recognised for both engagement and achievement. They gain the confidence and necessary skills to achieve the best they can in all they do, ensuring that they not only enjoy their time at Hurst, but thrive and excel. They also learn the importance of developing certain values – a sense of duty, an

40 | fine

awareness of right and wrong, and a respect for others. Hurst pupils are ambitious with a clear sense of purpose, they acquire a balanced view of life, develop persistence and determination when faced with new challenges and emerge as independent, mature individuals. Academic excellence is the foundation of a Hurst education, not just in its own right, but because it opens doors to the next stage of pupils’ lives. Hurst also offers extensive sporting, cultural, intellectual and social programmes, to help pupils

develop as rounded, accomplished individuals who make a real success of their lives after they leave. The college understands that the best possible grades are critical, but at the same time, the development of key skills, qualities and values which are so important come from engagement with life beyond the classroom. Outstanding and committed staff ensure that Hurst’s five-day academic week provides the right environment to challenge and support every pupil’s learning and personal development.

Their two- week timetable allows them to maximise the use of academic time, structure more sessions for sport and cocurricular activities and create a better rhythm to the working week. Academic lessons take place in the first four to six hours a day, five days per week, whilst sport and activities take place from midafternoon with matches on Saturdays. Co-curricular activities are regarded as being key to the all-round education of each pupil, in that through such activities, pupils will not only acquire certain skills and develop certain qualities, but will also be introduced to a sport, hobby or past-time which will give them pleasure throughout their lives. Such activities could be physical or challenging, serviceorientated or cerebral, but whatever their talents, pupils are encouraged to pursue at least one significant activity throughout their time at Hurst. A comprehensive list of activities from which to choose, include clubs for everything from books and film to dissection and mechanics; the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force, community service, environmental conservation, a choice of sports sessions, fitness training; as well as drama, choir and orchestra, dance, debating, plus workshops for art and design technology. With all this activity taking place, it is no wonder then that Hurst is a very friendly and warm community with a genuine family feel, particularly apparent in the houses which are key to the school’s structure. Pupils develop a strong sense of house identity and loyalty, whether they are part of a day or boarding house. Hurst pupils are characteristically very supportive of each other and close friendships are often formed which last a lifetime. The strength of the school rests on the strength of their smaller communities and pupils are encouraged to integrate with those from other houses, so that there is a relaxed social atmosphere which extends from houseto-house and year-to-year, allowing the different age groups and communities within the school to mix naturally. Since 2005, when Tim Manly became Headmaster, the school has enhanced every aspect of its provision year-on-year and this momentum for improvement continues unabated. Rising academic standards are very much part of this strategy and in 2016, Hurst celebrated its best ever A-level results for the fifth year in succession and at GCSE the highest ever A*/A percentage, alongside a record-breaking A*- B score. In short, the college aims to develop confident, successful, independent individuals with a good sense of themselves and the world around them, who will succeed in their lives whatever route they choose. www.hppc.co.uk

Unique gifts & Antique Treasures If buying three teaspoons and a milk jug from a standard wedding list isn’t your idea of gift-giving heaven, consider an antique as a unique alternative that the happy couple can treasure forever. n less than a month, The Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair makes its annual appearance for the third year, this time from Friday 5 until Sunday 7 May. The first two fairs proved most popular bringing people from all over the south of England and from much further afield to the visit the National Trust’s treasure house of Petworth and its glorious ‘Capability’ Brown landscape, to discover a Marquee full of exciting art and antiques from different eras, right up to the present day.

The present day is represented by a number of artists, including Anthony Garratt who enjoys painting outside, allowing the weather to interact and make its own mark on how the painting turns out. Inspired by Petworth, a number of Anthony Garratt’s paintings, completed in Petworth Park and other Sussex locations, will be for sale from MoncrieffBray Gallery. Moncrieff-Bray Gallery is also showing the work of a number of contemporary sculptors, some of which will decorate the exterior of the Marquee.

Inside the Marquee, collectors, interior designers and interested visitors can walk amongst the stands full of country and fine antique furniture, oil and watercolour paintings, illustrations, prints, contemporary and antique sculpture, glass, ceramics, silver, clocks and watches and jewellery. Richard Ogden from London’s Burlington Arcade always puts on a magnificent display. A colourful presentation of traditional jewellery with hats and fascinators by royal milliner Rachel Trevor-Morgan should be quite a spectacle. William Heath Robinson’s amusingly creative inventions take a little time to study his ingenuity. In 1915, one of the greatest minds of the age, HG Wells wrote to Heath Robinson stating, “Your absurd, beautiful drawings... give me a peculiar pleasure of the mind like nothing else in the world.” Amongst the works for sale, Ottocento has a William Heath Robinson pen and ink drawing first published in ‘Railway Ribaldry’ by the Great Western Railway, Paddington in 1935. Wildlife art features prominently at this event, which sits well with one of the fair’s charities – The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation – a small, highly effective wildlife conservation charity funding key conservation projects across Africa and Asia that protect endangered species. Their mission is to increase awareness to people around the world about the need to protect and conserve wild animals and their habitats, campaigning and fighting wildlife crime, protecting natural areas and

Nissan Juke Nismo RS Thinking of buying a compact SUV? Read Ade Holder’s review of the Nissan Duke Nismo RS before you make your decision. 50 | fine

T

here are many things that spring to mind when one thinks of compact SUV but performance is rarely one of them. The rise of the SUV has been nothing short of meteoric and with the increase in high riding family sized vehicles has come the rise of their compact siblings. The compact SUV is all about fun and almost never about going off road. The Nissan Juke takes this quirky end of the market to an extreme with big bold headlight styling and a general air of whimsy. With this in mind I can’t help but wonder what was going through Nissan’s mind when they made the decision to make this cute “off roader” into a road going rocket!

and around eight depending on the model. The Nismo RS will do it in around seven seconds. Now this is not actually that quick these days but let’s remember…it’s an SUV! On top of the pace the RS has also been set up completely differently in terms of handling too. It is worth pointing out though, despite these upgrades the higher ride height means it still rolls during enthusiastic cornering as you would expect from an SUV. You can take the SUV out of the…well you get the idea. There are also some styling changes compared to the standard Juke; the RS is certainly more muscular with big wheel arches and a more hunkered down look. Inside the car you also get racing style suede all over the place, a racing steering wheel and some very serious seats.

Nismo who? The Nismo name will mean very little to all but the most nerdy car folk and even then it is really something of the preserve of the Japanese enthusiast. It is essentially the racing wing of Nissan. Nismo is to Nissan what AMG is to Mercedes or the famous M-Sport brand is to BMW. They produce fully fledged racing cars in a number of categories as well as some rather special and very fast Nissan road cars like the GTR. The focus is always on performance and race breeding so bringing this speed obsessed team in to spice up the quirky little Juke was certainly a bold move.

Did It Work? Whether or not this combination of sweet and sour has worked is really something only the person behind the wheel can decide. The RS is fast but really not that fast, it handles well but not as well as a number of hot hatches that rival it. It looks race-bred but it also still looks like a Juke so whichever way you take it the RS is certainly sporty but it also fails to be a full tilt sports car. For many buyers this is the perfect result, for others it is not enough sour and too much sweet.

The results So what is the result of this automotive odd couple? Well it is certainly something that goes fast. It is also something that still looks like a compact SUV and, more specifically, a Nissan Juke. In terms of stats the normal Juke will make the sprint to 60 mph in something between 12 seconds

With a price tag just over the £20,000 mark once again the Juke sits on the fence, it’s not really expensive but it is also costs more money than compact SUV buyers might want to spend. There is no doubt it is fun, it looks cool and there are not many on the road so if you want something different but, well, not too different then the RS might just be for you!

When passion meets performance

If you’re thinking of buying a performance car, you’ll want to talk to the experts. Keith Addison at Addspeed is just that. A specialist car junkie who can help pair you with the perfect Porsche*

K

eith Addison’s fascination with specialist cars started at an early age, fuelled by the fact that he did his apprenticeship under the expert eye of an ex-Bentley racing team mechanic in the 1960s. Once qualified, Keith joined Malaya garage in Billingshurst, which, at that time, was a Porsche and MercedesBenz agent. In 1978 he decided to set up his own business, Addspeed, specialising in servicing and repairing high performance vehicles. Keith is still going strong and enjoying life in the fast lane. To this day there are still many loyal customers who have been with him from the very beginning. The key to Keith’s winning ethos is to ensure that whatever Addspeed does, it does it well – and that includes looking after customers. The fact that Addspeed has always worked on a number of different makes – although Porsche makes up around 80 per cent of the load – means that Keith is well qualified to voice his opinion on the pros and cons of the various cars at the top end of the performance market. In August 2015 the workshop moved to a larger premises in Foundry Close, Horsham, to accommodate the growing business. The team at Addspeed offers a full range of services from servicing and maintenance to full engine rebuilds. Keith

has worked hard over the years to create a business that runs things on a very open and friendly basis which enables the keen motorist to be more involved in the work being undertaken. The workshop constantly has a vast array of Marques, both old and new, ranging from your daily run-arounds to a Lamborghini Gallardo. Although the core business has always been repair and servicing work, Addspeed is also involved in motor sport. The team has been involved in several projects over the years, ranging from upgrading a 993 to RS specifications for track day use; to most recently sponsoring and preparing a Porsche 997 Cup car that a local firm is racing in the Britcar Endurance Championship. The Addspeed team offers a full range of services through their multi-talented technicians on any car to ensure that your vehicle performs as well as the day it was made – hopefully even better.

Transforming

‘Millennials’ in their twenties and early thirties are finding it increasingly difficult to get on the housing ladder and save for the future. Wealth management firm Brewin Dolphin says grandparents could transform their grandchildren’s lives by gifting wealth now to the younger generation. 54 | fine

‘Millennials’ have many things in their favour. Now in their twenties and early thirties, they are arguably the most educated generation in history and have grown up in a digital era full of new opportunities. However, they also face significant financial challenges. Of course, young people rarely had it easy in previous eras, but these are a different set of challenges to those faced by their parents or grandparents. Millennials are struggling with more university debt than any generation to date. At the same time, rising house prices and living costs have made it increasingly difficult for them to get on to the housing ladder. Nearly a third of 18 to 34 year olds are living with their parents.1 Even highlypaid professionals in their 20s and 30s are finding themselves trapped in rental limbo. And while life is a struggle for millennials now, the future may not look much brighter. Beset by so many immediate financial concerns, such as paying off debt, meeting the rent or saving for an elusive deposit, investing for a more comfortable future can seem like an impossible task.

Help from the ‘Grandbank’ Given their lack of saving, and without a home of their own, the future for millennials can appear bleak. However a solution to the millennials’ financial woes may be closer to home than they think. A one-off gift from a grandparent can transform a millennials’ life, giving them the financial leg up that they so desperately need. Many grandparents will have already considered supporting their family financially by leaving an inheritance at death. But, millennials need help now. If they can afford it, older people should consider gifting wealth while they are still alive. Alley says: “We are urging millennials to tap into the ‘Grandbank’ – the bank of their grandparents – to secure a deposit for a house and to help kick-start their savings. This would be transformative for grandchildren, taking them out of the rental trap and onto the property ladder immediately.” Many grandparents do not realise what a positive effect they can have on the financial future of their grandchildren by taking action now. The benefits can be multiple and long-lasting.

Liz Alley, Divisional Director of Financial Planning at Brewin Dolphin, says: “Millennials are between a rock and a hard place. While they aspire for homeownership, it is becoming an increasingly unreachable prospect as house prices have soared. And, while they want to save, they either can’t due to high living costs or despairingly feel there’s very little point.”

Gifting money for a deposit can help grandchildren on to the housing ladder. This can free up income by removing the need for grandchildren to keep saving for a deposit. Mortgage payments are also typically cheaper than the rent they would otherwise be paying. The income saved can be used in a number of beneficial ways.

The recently published Brewin Dolphin Family Wealth Report2 reveals that around 15% of 25 to 35 year olds feel that major life goals, such as home ownership, seem so unachievable that it discourages them from saving. Produced with the think tank Centre for Economics and Business Research, it found that 37% of households where the main income earner is aged 25 to 34 have ‘negative financial wealth’. That means their liabilities exceed the level of their assets.

Long-lasting benefits

Given these depressing statistics it is unsurprising that three in five millennials say they have no spare money to save. Almost a quarter (23%) saves nothing at all, and just under a fifth (18%) saves less than 5%. Instead, this age group is spending 90% of their income and a fifth admits to stretching themselves financially to keep up with their peers.

Money saved by buying, rather than renting could be invested into an an ISA or a pension. Alley says: “Grandparents could help their grandchildren to start saving potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds in the process. If they survive for seven years, this has the added benefit of reducing the size of a grandparent’s estate for IHT purposes.” A grandchild who saved £151 per month by buying rather than renting and put that monthly saving into an ISA could amass £77,633 over a 25year period.3 If money is put away into a pension instead, they could benefit from a pension worth over £181,800 at age 65

over a 36 year period from the age of 29. 4 Please bear in mind that the value of ISAs and pensions can fall as well as rise and you may get back less that you invested.

Establish a plan Grandparents will need to establish their own financial position to give them the confidence to pass on some of their wealth now. A cashflow analysis will help to establish what might be needed in later life, what is available now in terms of capital and income and how to invest in order to maintain a lifestyle in the future. Talking about money is not always easy, but sitting down as a family to discuss your financial aims and concerns is the best way forward. Your grandchildren will thank you if you make the effort. If you are in a position to gift money now you could transform their lives, and the benefits will last a lifetime. Get inspired in the Surrey Hills As of summer 2016, the Greensand Way in the Surrey Hills has been attracting visitors with a new sculpture trail. These distinct pieces of art are part of the Inspiring Views project delivered by Surrey Hills Arts, working with landowners to open up hidden views along the Greensand Way and improve access.

ive sculptors and designers were commissioned to create sculptural benches at viewpoints along the Greensand Way at Gibbet Hill, Reynards Hill, Holmbury Hill, Winterfold and Hascombe Hill. At Gibbet Hill, sculptor Walter Bailey created ‘Xylem’ a bench carved out of oak which has taken inspiration from Walter’s microscopic studies of charcoal. Historically charcoal has great relevance to the Greensand Way as this material has supported individuals and industries enabling the shaping of copper, bronze, glass and iron through the centuries.

58 | fine

Walter comments; “It has been a joy to return to explore and be inspired once again by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I was fascinated to discover that the tranquil Surrey Hills landscape harboured such a hive of industries, all reliant on the production of charcoal over many centuries.” A striking piece sitting on top of Reynards Hill is ‘Contour’, made up of multiple layers of recycled material to achieve a wave like form. Sculptor Russell Jakubowski took his inspiration from the layers of sedimentation, contours of the land and the visible forms and cycles of nature. Upon visiting Holmbury Hill, furniture maker Matthew Burt found the view ‘a heart stopping, glad to be alive moment. It demands savouring, mulling over, contemplating and discussion.’ Walkers are invited to do so from the sociable conversation bench that now accompanies that view. ‘Converse’ is a series of beautifully crafted benches in an arrangement that allows for social conversation and picnics as well as facing out to the beautiful, lesser trodden spot at Holmbury Hill. This location is fully accessible and the bench arrangement is designed to allow for wheelchair access. Director of Watts Gallery and Chairman of Surrey Hills Arts, Perdita Hunt comments: “The opportunity to bring together art and landscape is powerful and potent. I hope the engagement of artists to create these commissions for all of us to enjoy in five of the most stunning viewpoints in Surrey will give many hours of pleasure and discussion.” As well as the benches that provide a welcome rest stop for walkers, Giles Miller created ‘Perspectives’, at Winterfold. It is a shelter nestled within the woods with a clear view towards the South Downs offering a space for focused contemplation. The Giles Miller team created a surface of wooden shingles engraved with words and messages from local people and visitors which encapsulate their thoughts and feelings of the area. Local sculptor Tom Nicholson Smith was inspired by greensand itself, looking at the microscopic particles noting their shapes and wide range of tones. In ‘Grains’, he has created a grouped arrangement of carved oak forms that represent grains of sand up on the hill at Hascombe. Surrey Hills Arts is a partnership between Surrey Arts, Surrey County Council and the Surrey Hills. It aims to engage and inspire people with the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and its unique natural, cultural and industrial heritage through the arts. This project was funded through the Mittal Foundation.

“M TD

Memory Technology Device? Maximum Tolerated Dose? Match of the Day? Accountant and tax expert, Carolyn Burchell cracks the code for the uninitiated. 60 | fine

It’s MAKING TAX DIGITAL. “What’s that? And how might that affect me?” I hear you say. Rather, how will it affect you? Everyone will be impacted by Making Tax Digital so I would highly recommend you get started before the world and his wife board the MTD train. Making tax digital, or MTD for those down with HMRC lingo, is an initiative which will go live in April 2018* for income tax, followed by its two ugly sisters, VAT and Corporation Tax, in 2019 and 2020.

It’s Personal

At the moment, only taxpayers who file selfassessment returns have online access to their income tax records and the information available is quite narrow, mainly returns, calculations and payments. In the future we will all have a Personal Tax Account. HMRC’s goal is for each individual to have an online record with pre-populated, real time information which should improve accuracy and accessibility. We should not need to provide HMRC with information they already have, though they currently store it on disparate systems dealt with by departments that do not communicate with each other, so don’t count on it. This financial information, including salaries, pension income, benefits-in-kind and bank interest, should be provided to HMRC by the third party as it is paid. We should be able to access our information at a time and place to suit us and have more control over making changes and corrections. The new Personal Tax Account is designed to give taxpayers a full picture of their financial position because it will bring in National Insurance, State Pension forecasts, tax credits and Marriage Allowance in addition to the income tax elements like PAYE coding notices, tax returns, payments and refunds. The National Insurance number is all-powerful so it is vital that you make sure that organisations get your number right. Sounds great, right? Well as the saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. In return, we are going to be expected to update our Personal Tax Account with data that cannot be prepopulated. If you are self-employed or have income from dividends, a rental property or non-UK sources, you will be expected to provide information “at least” quarterly. This has to be done “digitally” within 30 days of the quarter end. One common misconception is that you have to keep original documents in electronic format – this is not the case. And, for now (read that as you wish) the payment dates will not change. HMRC are, however, introducing a voluntary Pay As You Go scheme, which they expect 10% of taxpayers to use (let’s see how that works out for them). It is hoped that this will allow millions of people to fall out of the self-assessment regime meaning no more tax returns for them. For now though, tax returns remain a requirement together with existing filing deadlines. This will also herald the advent of the increased use of PAYE tax codes to collect tax. Tax codes are already commonly adjusted for company cars and earnings over £100K but HMRC are now promoting the wider “payrolling of benefits” rather than the current

P11D and tax return route. They have also started to factor in earnings from a broader range of sources like dividends and buyto-let. PAYE coding notices are notoriously inaccurate, particularly for people with earnings that vary from one year to the next because of bonuses and commissions, or taxpayers with multiple sources of income. If you learn just one thing from reading this article, let it be this: it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that your tax code is correct. If you do not understand it, get professional advice. Your employer is legally obliged to apply the code provided by HMRC; if you think it is wrong, you have to contact HMRC directly to get it changed. In future, you should be able to do this using your Personal Tax Account. So where does MTD leave accountants and tax advisers? Obsolete? This is, after all, the most significant administrative change to our tax system since self-assessment was introduced 20 years ago. But that’s the point, this is an administrative change. The underlying tax rules are not changing as a result of MTD. They ARE changing at an ever-faster pace due to the proliferation of tax law where successive Chancellors try to balance the books and satisfy public demand to tackle tax avoidance. Keeping up with tax is harder than keeping up with the Kardashians.

* STOP THE PRESS: The Chancellor announced in the 2017 Spring Budget that landlords, sole traders and partnerships below the VAT threshold will now go live in April 2019 (an estimated 3.1 million taxpayers).

The Personal Tax Account is one of a number of online services available through the .GOV.UK website so, if you don’t have a Government Gateway ID, you will need to create one first. If you already have access to Self-Assessment, you can use your existing Government Gateway ID. If you have forgotten it, you can create a new one. What are the legal implications of choosing marriage, or not? Shiraz Rustom, a barrister with 1215 Chambers oers his unique insight into what marriage means for your legal life. 62 | fine

Who w would givee a law to lov lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law. Congratulations on finding The One! Thank you, although I wouldn’t have though that lawyers know much about love…

You’d be surprised. Have you thought about the future? Well we’re moving into together; maybe we’ll get married or maybe just stay as Common-Law spouses, after all, all that stuff about changing names is a bit out of date. Well the names thing is easily dealt with. Marriage does not compel you to change your name, nor does it mandate which name you should take if you do. A married couple could keep their own names, take the wife’s name or make up a new one. The same is true of unmarried couples, who may use the same family name if they so wish. More importantly: There is no such thing as common-law spouses. Living together, even for a long time, does not confer the same rights on the partners as marriage. This can become significant when one of the partners dies, the relationship breaks down, or where there are children of the relationship. For Instance, where you may be asked for “next-of-kin”. Some medical establishments will accept unmarried partners as next of kin; however, there is a danger that your parents or siblings may overule your partner who may be more familiar with your wishes. Likewise, the rules of pension schemes all differ on the question of whether an unmarried partner can benefit from their partner’s pension. Anti-discrimination laws do insist that any benefits accruing to a mixed-sex partner but also accrue to a same-sex partner. In practice, many of the issues faced by cohabiting couples can be dealt with individually, for instance by registering partners for parental responsibility (a birth father does not automatically get parental responsibility), drawing up proper wills, and properly assigning title to any jointly owned property.

Well what about a Civil Partnership as a compromise? Currently, only same-sex couples can form civil partnerships. Heterosexual couples could draw up a “Cohabitation Contract” setting out the obligations and rights of each partner but these are of questionable value when the relationship ends.

Okay, so maybe we’ll get married. Should we get a prenup? How romantic! Prenuptial agreements are not yet binding in English law, but that is starting to change. Just make sure that you each get independent legal advice…

Very helpful. Alright, what should I do if the relationship breaks down? Give us a call.

Easy Tiger! Seriously, there are many ways to deal with the end of a relationship, from mediation to contested divorce. A good lawyer will guide you through all the options open to you, identify any issues that may arise and find a path through that is in accordance with your resources and situation. Getting a lawyer early should reduce your costs compared to getting one once the situation is out of hand, especially where there are children’s interests to be considered, and property or money to be distributed. For more information about this or any other legal issue, which affects you or your business, visit www.1215chambers.com or call 020 3291 1215.
