elcome to our extra special weddings issue. I love a good wedding. There’s just something so special about watching two people stand up in front of the people they love most in the world (and that woman from the bride’s mum’s work whose name noone can remember) and pledge to love each other forever.

DESIGN & PRODUCTION
Of course, my favourite wedding was my own. My husband and I got married in the Royal Pavilion in Brighton on the Glorious Twelfth and then skipped off to The Cricketers pub in The Lanes to eat and drink with our friends and family. There was no formality, there were several children, there was far too much food and my wedding dress was pink. It was a great day and I’ve said many times since that I’d love to do it all over again, exactly the same. Whether you’re planning a small and perfectly formed wedding or a huge fairy-tale affair, I hope you find some inspiration over the coming pages. We’ve pulled together the top venues, caterers, entertainers and, for wedding guests, we’ve picked the perfect personalised gifts for the happy couple. We’ve got what to wear advice for the boys and the girls and we have a new contributor, Maxine White, giving us her take on her forthcoming nuptials. Of course, it doesn’t need me to say that a wedding is just the beginning. It’s (hopefully) the door opening to a lifetime

PHOTOGRAPHY of marital bliss. For that reason, since this issue marks my own ten year wedding anniversary, I’d like to dedicate it to my own wonderful husband. Ten years on, he’s still my best friend, my strongest advocate, my most challenging critic and the person I have the most fun with. In the intervening decade, we’ve had two homes and two children and I wouldn’t have wanted to do any of it without him by my side. Thank you Alex. See you next time. Catherine Ross EDITOR

S
etting up your home together can be a minefield of compromise, but is also the perfect opportunity to create a beautiful, stylish home for you to grow into. Interior designer, Gary WarrellPhillips, offers some advice for newlyweds. When my wife and I first set up home together we literally had two of everything… toasters, televisions, table lamps and so on. What immediately became obvious was that we each needed to de-clutter the excess and ruthlessly decide which items we simply couldn’t live without. This was no bad thing as we soon discovered that over the years we had independently collected a wonderful array of pieces that, once blended, helped to create a stunning, eclectic interior that was the perfect mix of both our personalities and style. With my love of Rococo and my wife’s fascination with Mid Century design our home was destined to be a fabulous talking point at every turn. Though there was still the matter of the nitty-gritty – oh what to do with bequeathed items such as Aunty’s not to lovely tea set?
Compromise to harmonise Little did I realise when I became an interior designer that much of my role would be to act as a mediator to many a merging couple. When the romantic dream bubble of the pretty cottage with a white picket fence unexpectedly bursts, paving the way to thoughts such as ‘he had better not be bringing that Iron Man poster’ or ‘if I see one more scatter cushion I’m going to scream’, one quickly discovers there is more to domestic bliss than adding a toothbrush in the bathroom and sharing a sock drawer. Never before has learning the art of compromise been more relevant. One of you will naturally be the ‘nester’ in the relationship, but it’s a good rule of thumb to remember that both of you will
have opinions about how you want the space to look. After all, you each want to contribute to your homes décor so that you each love the end result. Make a list of the furniture you want to keep, then compare notes. You’ll soon start to see what will work where and can begin planning your room style. If there’s a crossover, a little outside the box thinking will present a new use for certain pieces. For instance, if you both love your living room side tables, perhaps one set could be re-purposed as stylish bed side tables. And if there is a chest of drawers too many, think about up-cycling and using as hall storage. Adorn with a beautiful mirror and your opening act will be absolutely fabulous. With the Past Modern trend still rocking the interior design world, it’s not a problem if one of you prefers a traditional over modern. Pairing new with the old can look stunning when pulled together with a feature rug, drop dead gorgeous light fitting and bold scatter cushions. Just remember though, less is more with the knick-knacks! Speaking of which…
Purge and merge No, these are not the names of your future cats! They are two words to remember when you and your significant other are thinking of treading the floorboards. You will both have things that you love, that define you respectively. Such reminders have a wonderful way of transporting us right back to those treasured days gone by, but they are not all going to fit on a bookshelf, especially when they are times two. Think of the dust! A memory box is named so with good reason. So, once you have selected those favourite items that will also enhance the look of your space – honey get the rest of those knick-knacks boxed up. Now is the time to begin a new collection of memories, accent pieces chosen together that say oui and we!

Colour yourselves happy Colour is my passion and I have always believed in the ‘Chevruel Effect’ – which is the proven theory that colour influences one’s senses, thoughts and emotions. A space should not only look fantastic it should make a person feel amazing and I absolutely love how different hues have the power to do that. The simplest way to seek balance in a space, that combines belongings from two abodes, is to select the right palette. But what do you do if you are poles apart on the colour spectrum? Opting for neutral tones for the walls will allow all your chosen furniture to shine. Then look to add a pop of complimentary colours that you each adore in the form of soft furnishings, light shades and treasured ornaments. You could even go one step further… make your first ‘joint’ home décor-purchase a piece of wall art, that has elements of both styles and preferred notes – it could be the piece de resistance that beautifully completes you and your room scene.

Setting up home together need not be an emotional rollercoaster. With a little compromise, some patience and lots of imagination there is always a way to successfully combine individual styles. And remember it’s not a race, there’s no need to rush through the design of your love nest. Like your commitment to each other, it’s a one step at a time process - start slowly, create one memory at a time and voila… wherever you live together, it will be your dream home. About Gary Warrell-Phillips Gary is a leading design authority. He is highly sought after having worked with well-known personalities, and has made regular guest appearances on television programmes, including This Morning. Choosing your wedding gown is one of the most personal, exciting and personal moments in the whole of the wedding planning process. Graham at Cranleigh Bridal has plenty of experience in helping brides to be find the dress of their dreams. He told Fine what to look out for.
F
irstly let me congratulate you on your engagement and wish you happiness for the future.
When you have set a date and have booked the church and venue you will be on the road to finding your perfect dress. For many brides, dress shopping is a real occasion and many bring together their mothers, sisters and friends to make a day of it. I’d recommend that you go dress shopping at least six months before the date of your wedding. It can take up to 20 weeks for a dress to be ordered in from a supplier and then there’s additional time required for alterations. There have never been more options when it comes to choosing your dream dress. Wedding dress boutiques offer personal service in a relaxed atmosphere, but an increasing number of brides are sourcing their dresses online. If you go down the online route, be sure to buy your dress from a reputable site. There are lots out there which show pictures of the dresses, but then can’t produce them. If you have a very clear idea of what you want, you could also consider having a gown made to your own design. A trusted wedding dress shop, selected based on personal recommendation often offers the safest and most thorough service. You will receive a personal service offering advice and assistance in guiding you along the steps to finding your perfect gown and giving you an enjoyable experience. We find that many brides have their hearts set on a particular style, but when they try it on it just doesn’t suit them, so we recommend that you keep an open mind. The dress you choose should enhance your figure giving you a good shape, be appropriate for your venue and suit your theme. A good sales assistant will let you
look at the dresses available whilst asking you what you have in mind, they will then show you styles based on your answers. As professionals, they will often throw in a dress based on your thoughts but suitable to your shape and you may find the dress that gives you the wow factor is totally different from what you first thought. In this day and age there are so many different styles of weddings. Couples often base their wedding on a theme, destination or family tradition. If you are having a destination wedding then your choice of dress needs to fit the location, a floaty, sleeveless chiffon dress for a hot climate which will fit into a specially designed box for the overhead lockers on the plane, a white dress with a cape or fur shrug for a winter wedding, a tea length dress full circle 50’s style or an empire line 1920,s style themed dress encrusted in crystals. The choice is endless and todays dresses come in myriad colours. There is no longer any stigma attached to choosing a non-white dress. Champagne, blush, gold and ivory are all very popular, with some brides choosing stronger colours, like red and black. Eddy K is a top Italian designer who uses the best French and Italian laces and Swarovski crystals. His gowns are elegant, well made and ooze sophistication and fit the recent trends of fishtail, lace, low cut backs, and encrusted in crystals. His couture range is fairy tale dresses which dreams are made from. Lou Lou dresses are gorgeous 1950 style dresses, full circle tea length and ballerina style so elegant and feminine for a 50’s themed wedding. Eternity dresses are beautifully designed at affordable prices and would grace any wedding.

Here come the bride
e mes
de…
In the run up to the big day, everyone’s attention invariably turns to the bride. So what does it mean to be approaching the moment when you say “I do” to the person of your dreams? Bride to be, Maxine White, tells Fine which magic ingredients are going to make up her wedding day. It sounds casual and it is, I must have said the words “low” and “key” a million times, but as a bride, or just as a woman, low key simply means a smaller, tinier version of perfect. That’s how we happen to have our best friend delivering the service and heart shaped sparklers and lavender confetti and a bow tie for the dog, these touches didn’t come from nowhere they came from my inner Bridezilla. As a bride, your handsome groom will be there and he will love every second of it, but you will ultimately shoulder responsibility.
M
y Mum recently told me that she didn’t even know who was coming to her wedding, it was quick and small and I imagine it to be very badly lit. Poor Mother didn’t even choose her own wedding dress, it was given to her by a friend, too big and, well, too everything. Somewhere between 1974 and now brides have been given the go ahead to make their own wedding decisions and they certainly grabbed that freedom by the disco balls. More recently, we’ve seen the advent of the Bridezilla; the very unfortunate name given to any bride who knows exactly what she wants on her wedding day. I am one of them, second time round admittedly I am less of one, but a bride who knows what she wants? That’s me. In August this year I will be saying “go on then,” in a field in East Sussex, it won’t be Scott and Charlene size but the sentiment will be the same. 20 of our favourite people (including my ex-husband and his wife) will watch us walk down a tea light lit aisle as one of our best friends sings John Legend’s “All of Me” and we collectively blub. We got engaged on a super sunny day in May on Brighton beach, sat amongst the stones on the hill watching a drunken girl roll downwards whilst screaming. He asked me, no fireworks or brass bands but it was perfect for us. We want a wedding that is the same, minus the drunken girl maybe?
From your knickers to the flowers in your daughter’s hair you will care for the details, because all of these details add up to that magical moment. That photo you have taken in your head and you can see so clearly you need to recreate it perfectly. I think that’s why brides get branded as difficult and high maintenance, it’s because they have the picture in their head and they expect everyone else to see the picture. If someone started drawing with a sharpie on top of your perfect picture you might get a little bit annoyed too. So we have the wedding we wanted, just around the corner now, it’s not legal, it’s not got any chairs and my seven year old daughter is going to walk me down the aisle. It’s a family affair, my Mum’s in charge of prettying, Dad’s doing the food, brother-in-law the cake, and my sister’s on hair and makeup. Me? Well I just ask very politely. My picture is coming together nicely; I even have the dress. I heart weddings, all of them, big, small, lavish and casual, they all make me happy. Even if I didn’t know the couple very well I would struggle to not still be moved, like watching any group of young children sing in unison there is something hopeful and innocent about two people deciding to love each other for a long time. Weddings are hope, they are fresh starts, families getting closer and new friendships being made, they are “no hard feelings” and opportunities for forgiveness, they are the only time (alive) you have all the people you know in one place, weddings are just the best, especially my weddings.

As a pub that loves gin and has over two shelves dedicated to over 50 brands, the team at The Three Crowns in Wisborough Green were thrilled to host the wedding of fellow gin lovers Amanda & Joe.
S
et in the idyllic village of Wisborough Green, the pub with its eclectic interior and gorgeous country garden provided the perfect backdrop for Amanda and Joe’s wedding celebrations. Arriving through the garden gate as man and wife, the happy couple and the whole wedding party were welcomed with G&T’s using local House Gin, Blackdown. As the sun shone and the cricket played on the adjacent village green the bride and groom took full advantage of the beautiful setting with lots of gorgeous photos that they can treasure for a lifetime. As a pub that is renowned for its great use of fresh local ingredients the kitchen team were only too happy to create Amanda & Joes favourite dishes - The main course inspired by their first date! As the wine flowed the guests enjoyed Godminster and red onion tartlets, Bacon wrapped free range chicken breast with cream cheese filling served with new potatoes and seasonal green vegetables followed by lemon and berry Eton mess. Guests ate at tables laid in the garden decorated with flower filled Gin bottles and Amanda’s homemade place cards. The reception continued into the summer afternoon with guests mingling in the garden enjoying lots of wine and prosecco. As evening fell it was time to cut the cake - the cheese-cake. A delicious stack of cheese wheels topped with a Godminster
Cheddar heart. Once cut it was put onto platters and served with posh crackers and The Three Crowns Homemade chutney - perfect fuel for dancing, which had now begun in the dining room. Music continued into the night with lots more fun and dancing. Port toasts and late night Sausage baps ensured no one went hungry. If a wedding could be judged on smiles and sore dancing feet then this one was a roaring success. Amanda and Joe it was a pleasure to be involved in your special day. The big wedding question –

When you’re planning your wedding, one question is likely to keep coming up; kids or no kids. Fine Editor, Catherine Ross explores the pros and cons of getting hitched amongst pint sized party-goers.

kids or no kids
I
t’s a tricky one isn’t it? Having children at your wedding will enhance the photos, increase the likelihood of hilarious wedding anecdotes and save your friends who have little ones a huge childcare headache. And if you already have your own children, whether or not they’ll be there to share your special day is a bit of a no-brainer. On the other hand, if you have yet to enter the world of nappies, tantrums and dinosaur obsession, the idea may be less appealing. Keeping language and behaviour clean, particularly as your wedding festivities go on into the evening can be a challenge and the idea of a wearing a Ribena-soaked,

ivory silk gown is probably not how you envisaged your first dance as a married couple. Couple that with the sugar-induced rampage tots experience after too much lemonade and all the icing the little cherubs manage to snaffle from the edges of the cake and I can see why some people choose an adults-only affair. Ultimately, as the bride and groom, the decision is yours. But there is a middle ground. If you cater and plan entertainment for children at your wedding, you’re much more likely to enjoy all the benefits with fewer of the headaches.

CHILDCARE Book a mobile crèche with trained and experienced childcare providers. They’ll turn up with all the equipment they need to entertain your mini-guests while their parents celebrate with you. You can choose key moments to keep the kids out of the way, the ceremony, for example (you just know that your Best Man’s toddler is going to squawk just as the celebrant asks if anyone knows of any lawful impediment why you shouldn’t be joined in matrimony), and the speeches are good times to be child free.
ENTERTAINMENT Catering for every age and preference, there is a wealth of child entertainers out there. From super hero parties (www. superheroparties.co.uk), to mini discos and comedy routines (www.partytom.com) to an interactive bubble show (www.bubbleshow. uk), puppet theatre (www.wishworks.co.uk) or Lego activities (www.masterbuilderparties. co.uk) there’s something for everyone. The only risk is that you may get jealous and find some of the big kids (ok, adults) get drawn in to the fun.
FAVOURS While sugared almonds might be a people pleaser, I’ve yet to meet a child thrilled by the prospect. Consider putting together goody bags to entertain little ones at the dinner table. Colouring books and pens, disposable cameras, story books, puzzle or card games and bottles of bubbles will keep kids occupied while they graze on their chicken nuggets and your friends catch up over a few glasses of fizz. So go ahead, embrace little ones at weddings – just don’t serve coloured drinks.

The Gift Horse If you’re attending a wedding, it’s only polite to provide a gift. If gift lists leave you cold, fear not, the newest member of the Fine team, Maxine White, has looked into wedding gifts that offer the personal touch.
I
still remember the joy of receiving all of the wedding gifts from the wedding list when I returned from my honeymoon, I ripped into them like a woman possessed, and just like Monica in Friends, I struggled to not open them all before my Chandler had even returned. But what happens if you don’t get the gift of a list and you are left to wade alone through beating hearts and champagne glasses guessing what the happy couple may favour. Or if by the time you get to the list all that’s left is half a dozen overpriced teaspoons? There are some rules I think you can follow. When it comes to actual things, avoid the obvious, couples can never have enough cash but they can have too many chopping boards. When shopping think of the long term, picture what might they one day enjoy eating, reading, doing or drinking together. Newlyweds are always popular on the dinner party circuit, so can never have too much cheese or wine.

CUSHIONS A happy home is a cosy home and cushions are the quickest and softest way to cosiness. Bed ones, sofa ones, children ones, in our house even the dog has his own cushion. As we all enjoy the monogramming of all of our possessions these days, these personalised cushions could make the perfect gift for a couple, or a family.
BLANKETS When buying your cushions, you will probably need a blanket to match, I like to have a pile of blankets at the ready, different colours, material, weight. A posh blanket will always be welcome in any household, especially for newlyweds who enjoy newly married cuddles under blankets, picnicking on blankets, gazing at the stars under blankets, dressing a sofa in blankets, wrapping chilly knees in blankets, building tents for their young children with blankets… you get the idea.
WINE The timeless drink of celebration, when in doubt buy wine. If you know the couple well you will know what they drink, in that case buy as much or as little of it as you desire. If you’re not sure you can get them mixed boxes that will be sent directly to their home, or even vouchers, wine vouchers for wine that is delivered to your home, pouring not included.
I recently attended a wedding and was given no guidance on gifting, after many moments poring over ideas, the notion of clubbing together seemed wise. If we were going to give money, we might as well give it in a big lump. In no time the gift of relaxation emerged. We could buy vouchers from places offering spa breaks with no commitment to dates or venues, just money to buy them some post wedding romantic bliss. A gift that keeps on giving will keep their wedding memories fresh for longer. So along with their wine what about a magazine subscription each? What’s nicer than getting happy post! And happy post that you are responsible for, you’ll be their favourites, well for 6 months to a year anyway… I asked some newlyweds what their best gift had been earlier this year, and besides mine, obviously, they said it had been a weekend away, this had trumped all other gifts. So really, give them some time together, buy them the opportunity to feel like newlyweds for longer, to eek out the process. They will love it so much they’ll want to marry each other more often.
If you want the giving of alcohol to be more personal there are some lovely ideas online for labelling wine. Pick the bottles, buy or make your own labels and create a box of firsts for the newlyweds. Red for their First fight, Champagne for their First baby, mulled wine for their First Christmas as a married couple and so on, keep them drunk for a whole year!

Stems of Southwater, situated in the heart of Sussex, is owned and run by Kate Scholefield alongside her team of highly talented and creative florists. From the beautiful shop they create stunning flowers for all occasions. Here Kate tells Fine a bit more about her busy business. 50 | fine
I
trained at the prestigious Judith Blacklock Flower School in Knightsbridge and have worked in both London and Brighton before settling in Southwater. I’m passionate about flowers and a natural perfectionist. I treat every arrangement as though I’m creating it for my own special day. I understand just how important these details are. For me, no detail is too small and there is nothing more satisfying than bringing to life someone’s vision of their perfect wedding. Creating wedding flowers is a real buzz, from the first design consultation, I think it is really important to get to know each couple and to connect with their design brief. Flowers allow you to add a depth and character to your wedding as well as texture and scent to enhance the experience of your guests. Stems of Southwater specialises in seasonal, hand-picked flowers of only the highest quality, to bring stunning displays to create lasting memories to treasure long after your wedding day. Having worked in many venues across Sussex and Surrey, Stems of Southwater are able to offer advice about the best way to dress and bring your venue to life with flowers, whether you dream of
a country barn with delicate styling or a grand manor house with an opulent and lavish theme. We often hear from our brides that the flowers really made the day and were a talking point amongst all the guests. Kimberley and Richard, who got married at South Lodge Hotel in July this year said, “The attention to detail, the scale, the choice and quality of the flowers - everything was beyond perfect and will always be captured in our beautiful wedding photographs” And Abigail Seward, whose nuptials were held in the walled garden at Cowdray in May said, “The flowers you provided for our wedding were stunning. They were all so beautiful and I just couldn’t choose which arrangement was my favourite! We had so many positive comments by all the guests and I will be recommending Stems of Southwater to anybody who asks. Stems also offer floral tributes, corporate contracts, gifts and homeware as well as flowers for all traditional, seasonal and commemorative days, making Kate and her team the perfect choice. The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity annual Arundel to Brighton walk is the charity’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Fine editor, Catherine Ross, caught up with the fundraising team to find out what’s in store for walkers this year.
S
ave Saturday 17th September for a big charity challenge for a great cause. A team of between 50 and 100 walkers will cover the 35km distance between Arundel and Brighton to raise money for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity which supports babies and children with Cerebral Palsy. For those less able participants, a 12km route is also available. Walkers will get the chance to enjoy the staggeringly beautiful views and scenery Sussex has to offer. Starting from the spectacular Arundel Castle, the walk will span the magnificent landscape of the South Downs before finishing at Devil’s Dyke on the outskirts of Brighton. This is the fourth annual A2B walk. Last year, 55 walkers set off from Arundel and raised £13,000, which the charity is using to fund services for children with Cerebral Palsy. This year, all money raised will be put towards the creation of the Dame Vera Lynn Centenary Centre. The charity plans to use the centre to provide weekly conductive education sessions as well as respite care, holiday clubs, field trips, access to assistive interactive technology, outreach services and much more. As with last year’s walk, event organisation is down to outdoor specialists, Pied a Terre Adventures, who are also
patrons of the charity. There will be regular refreshment stops, plenty of encouragement along the way and a welldeserved hot meal for all on completion and certificate. Another charity, Rapid Relief, is kindly providing snacks and food on the day. There is also an exclusive mystery prize draw for all those fundraisers who reach the £100 fundraising target. Registration costs £35, with a reduced rate for under 16s. For more information on the A2B Walk and to register visit www.dvlcc.org.uk/events/16/arundel-tobrighton-walk/. And if you can’t take part, but are inspired to support those who are, visit www.dvlcc.org.uk and click the “donate” button. Ann Wenn, whose child has Cerebral Palsy and who completed the walk last year said: “I cannot express how much my friends and I enjoyed our time on the walk last year. It was an incredible experience and huge gratitude to the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity fundraising team plus Kirstie and Richard from Pied a Terre for all your hard work and organisation. You all did an amazing job! “Rapid Relief were absolutely terrific. Each member of their team were full of smiles and so friendly. The snacks and burger at the end were very much appreciated!”

G
oodwood Revival takes place from 9-11 September and is always guaranteed to be a great day out for all the family. Last year, a capacity crowd of 148,000 people took in the sights and sounds over the three days. The Revival race programme for 2016 includes a full schedule of 15 races over the weekend, including a completely new Kinrara Trophy race into the dusk on Friday evening, the most glamorous addition to the entry list since 1998. The St Mary’s Trophy will see a full grid of identical 85bhp Austin A35s lined up and raring to go in what is likely to be the most closely fought race in Revival history, and the Lavant Cup will celebrate BMW’s centenary with a glorious grid of BMWand Bristol-engined sports cars. Special celebrations on the hallowed Goodwood circuit will include track demonstrations in tribute to the life and career of Sir Jack Brabham on the 50th anniversary of his final world championship win, and the 50th anniversary of Formula 1’s ‘Return to Power’ in 1966. “Life in ’66” will feature a parade of 1960s vehicles celebrating the 50th anniversary of England’s World Cup win, and the hugely popular Settrington Cup race will return again featuring pedalpowered Austin J40s. The Goodwood Veterans Tribute will celebrate the life of the circuit and the people who made it great, as well as the beautiful Freddie March Spirit of Aviation concours d’elegance for aircraft
manufactured up to 1966, the Best Dressed Competition, a celebration of 70 years of the bikini, vintage fashion on the High Street, and all the fun of the fair Over The Road. For car lovers, there is no better place than the Goodwood Revival to see some of the most rare and valuable cars in the world. Wealth Management firm, Brewin Dolphin, will be sponsoring the Revival once again. The company feels the elite motoring world is a natural fit for its clients. Douglas Milne attended Goodwood Revival as a guest of Brewin Dolphin last year. He collects and races classic cars and loves the fact that Goodwood Revival is all about showcasing the cars in their natural racing setting rather than just going to admire them as static exhibits. “It might seem strange to own an investment and then immediately put it in harm’s way, but that’s not an entirely accurate assessment. The proportion you put at risk is quite small, and every result in a race adds to a car’s pedigree and its value. Smart investors can do well, but most end up ploughing it into another car!” According to Simon Blowey, Financial Planner at Brewin Dophin: “Many historic racing cars have been crashed multiple times but their exploits on the track generally outweigh the cost of subsequent repairs. As a depreciating asset, cars do not attract capital gains tax but the limited or diminishing stock has helped keep prices rising during the recent financial crisis. But for most people, classic cars are less about being an investment and more about living their passions.”

Marriage it’s good for the bottom line
A wedding can be an expensive affair, but are you better off married? Carolyn Burchell of Composure Accounting and Taxation offers a financial perspective.
I
recently read about a man who asked his girlfriend to marry him based on the tax savings available to him as a married man - he hadn’t bought a ring but he had prepared a spreadsheet. Now I love a good spreadsheet but even I am a bit taken-aback at this one. Unsurprisingly, she turned him down. Amazingly, she didn’t dump him (just took to social media for a good rant). Whilst I would never recommend a tax-driven proposal, there are reliefs and savings available to married couples or civil partners. Be aware though that there is no such thing, for tax purposes, as a common-law wife, husband or partner. The Government brought in ‘Marriage Allowance’ in 2015, meaning that if one spouse or civil partner is not using their whole personal allowance, they can elect to transfer up to 10% to their spouse or partner provided that the receiver is a basic rate taxpayer (up to £43,000 income per year). There are a number of ways to do this, so it is not reserved for those who submit tax returns. The tax saving in 2016-17 would be £220 and claims can be backdated. In addition to ‘Marriage Allowance’, there is also ‘Married Couple’s Allowance’. This can be claimed by couples where one person was born before 6th April 1935 and would reduce the tax bill of the higher earner by between £322 and £835.50. Unfortunately, if you were married before 5 December 2005, only the husband can claim this particular allowance.
Useful tips: Where assets are owned jointly, HMRC will assume that income and sales proceeds are split 50:50 but you elect otherwise. Moving from income to capital gains tax, which is charged on profit made from the sale of assets such as second homes or

shares, transactions between spouses and civil partners take place at ‘nil gain, nil loss’. To illustrate: Fred buys a flat in 1999 for £135,000 and decides in 2007 to transfer the property to his wife, Wilma, when it is worth £165,000. There won’t be any tax to pay at this point as he is deemed to have ‘sold’ the flat for £135,000 as the ‘nil gain, nil loss’ rule applies. In 2016, Wilma is offered £205,000 for the flat and decides to sell it. The gain subject to tax is £70,000 being the difference between £205,000 she is paid and the notional £135,000 she acquired it for. Similar to the annual income tax personal allowance that each taxpayer receives, there is an annual capital gains tax exemption - currently £11,000. This means that Wilma would only pay tax on a net gain of £59,000. It also means that if Fred and Wilma had owned the flat jointly the gain taxable would have been £48,000 as Fred would also have been able to use his £11,000 annual exemption. As with all things tax, planning is key. There is usually little that an accountant can do to help after the event. Fred and Wilma may have been better off owning the asset together or it may have been better after all for Wilma to have owned the flat by herself – it all depends on what else is going on in their personal finances. This is why it is vital that accountants adopt a holistic approach to their clients to give them the best advice possible. This is an outline of a few of the most commonplace areas affected by your legal status as a couple but if you think that any of the following might apply to you, I would highly recommend obtaining advice as soon as possible: • The capital gains tax rules apply to couples still living together; if you separate, there are time limits on the reliefs available.
• There are rules governing handling disposal of property during divorce or dissolution. • If you are entering into financial transactions with relatives or business partners; there are special rules for what HMRC called ‘related party transactions’ and these can extend beyond your own relatives to those of your spouse or civil partner.
Heads up: Trading through a limited company with a couple as joint shareholders is commonplace as it allows each shareholder to receive dividends – and from 6th April 2016 each taxpayer will benefit from the £5,000 nil rate dividend band - but HMRC is increasingly paying attention to what it perceives to artificial set-ups. The majority of our clients are ownermanged businesses so we can advise you on best practice in this area. Famously “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” and inheritance tax conveniently combines the two. When someone dies, their possessions are known as their estate. If the estate is worth more than the £325,000 inheritance tax threshold, the executor will usually be responsible for paying the tax over to HMRC. However, whatever is left to the spouse or civil partner is exempt from inheritance tax. Additionally, any unused threshold is then transferred to the surviving spouse or civil partner and added to their own threshold. This applies to subsequent marriages and partnerships. My overarching recommendation would be to get professional advice whether that be an accountant, a solicitor or an independent financial adviser (probably all of the above). Citizens Advice are also a useful source of information.
Legally wed
What are the legal implications of choosing marriage, or not? Shiraz Rustom, a barrister with 1215 Chambers offers his unique insight into what marriage means for your legal life. Congratulations on finding The One! Thank you, although I wouldn’t have though that lawyers know much about love…
You’d be surprised. Have you thought about the future? Well we’re moving in together; maybe we’ll get married or maybe just stay as CommonLaw spouses, after all, all that stuff about changing names is a bit out of date. Well the names thing is easily dealt with. Marriage does not compel you to change your name, nor does it mandate which name you should take if you do. A married couple could keep their own names, take the wife’s name or make up a new one. The same is true of unmarried couples, who may use the same family name if they so wish. More importantly: There is no such thing as common-law spouses. Living together, even for a long time, does not confer the same rights on the partners as marriage. This can become significant when one of the partners dies, the relationship breaks down, or where there are children of the relationship.
For Instance, where you may be asked for “next-of-kin”. Some medical establishments will accept unmarried partners as next of kin; however, there is a danger that your parents or siblings may overule your partner who may be more familiar with your wishes. Likewise, the rules of pension schemes all differ on the question of whether an unmarried partner can benefit from their partner’s pension. Anti-discrimination laws do insist that any benefits accruing to a mixed-sex partner but also accrue to a same-sex partner. In practice, many of the issues faced by cohabiting couples can be dealt with individually, for instance by registering partners for parental responsibility (a birth father does not automatically get parental responsibility), drawing up proper wills, and properly assigning title to any jointly owned property.
Well what about a Civil Partnership as a compromise? Currently, only same-sex couples can form civil partnerships. Heterosexual couples could draw up a “Cohabitation Contract” setting out the obligations and rights of each partner but these are of questionable value when the relationship ends.
Okay, so maybe we’ll get married. Should we get a prenup? How romantic! Prenuptial agreements are not yet binding in English law, but that is starting to change. Just make sure that you each get independent legal advice…
Very helpful. Alright, what should I do if the relationship breaks down? Give us a call.
Easy tiger! Seriously, there are many ways to deal with the end of a relationship, from mediation to contested divorce. A good lawyer will guide you through all the options open to you, identify any issues that may arise and find a path through that is in accordance with your resources and situation. Getting a lawyer early should reduce your costs compared to getting one once the situation is out of hand, especially where there are children’s interests to be considered, and property or money to be distributed.

A driving passion When Douglas Milne isn’t insuring travellers against threats to their lives he collects classic cars. Wealth management firm Brewin Dolphin talks to him about his passion for rare vehicles - and his wealth management
60 | fine
I
n his work life Douglas Milne is used to travelling in planes and armoured vehicles to some of the most dangerous places in of the world. When he gets home he unwinds by indulging his passion for rare classic cars. Douglas is chief executive of Special Contingency Risks, a Lloyd’s broker that specialises in security advice and kidnap and ransom insurance for companies and wealthy individuals. It’s a job that has more than its fair share of drama. Not that Douglas is one to make a fuss - he recounts a bid to kidnap him on a motorway in Colombia with an understatement: “these sorts of things happen”. Given his work life, perhaps it should come as no surprise that Douglas is not content with a standard family vehicle. He has been investing in rare classic cars for several years.
For this reason, Milne and people like him have turned to Brewin Dolphin to take advantage of our financial planning and wealth management services, so that they effectively outsource the stress of monitoring fast-moving financial markets and the complex task of planning for the future, such as tax planning and protection against illness or the impact of changing employment. Our specialised planners spend time getting to know you so that they can design bespoke packages of products that will ensure you are covered, whatever surprises life throws at you. They will also work with your solicitors, accountants, bankers and extended family, to ensure the best outcome. On the investment side, Brewin Dolphin will carefully work out an overall investment strategy with you.
Not the sort of collector who is happy to leave his investment in a garage, whenever he can, he takes his cars on the road, racing and displaying them to fellow enthusiasts. From 9 to 11 September his 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso will be at Goodwood Revival, parked outside the Brewin Dolphin pavilion. It is one of only 351 produced. Last year he displayed his rare 1955 Fraser Nash Le Mans Coupé, one of only nine ever built.
Rob Burgeman, investment manager and divisional director at Brewin Dolphin, says: “Years ago you might just have been given a piece of paper to sign and then told the wealth manager would do the rest. Now, it is a far more complex relationship. The manager will do a financial analysis, establish what the client wants to achieve, what risk they want – and can afford – to take, their time horizons and so on. When we have agreed the terms of engagement, we know the client’s aims and objectives.”
Buying, maintaining and racing classic cars, as well as running a global business, means Milne has little time left to look after his wealth and make arrangements for the financial security of his family.
Discretionary management is very different to simply putting your money into an investment fund where investors will have no knowledge of the fund’s activities beyond a simple annual statement of
investment performance: it is a service rather than a product. Simon Blowey, financial planner and divisional director at Brewin Dolphin, adds that an integrated approach that combines investment management with strategic tax planning, insurance and financial protection is key. “Our central proposition is to provide an integrated service where we take a holistic view of the clients’ financial circumstances. We look at everything from investments, pension provision under the recent wide-ranging legislative changes and planning for a tax efficient business exit, to the timing of gifting and looking at inheritance tax exempt assets, all of which need specialist advice to ensure all eventualities are covered. It is very much a two-way process but we take the bulk of the strain.” For further information visit brewin.co.uk. The value of investments can fall and you may get back less than you invested. The opinions expressed in this document are not necessarily the views held throughout Brewin Dolphin Ltd. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, George Eyston raced at Brooklands, entered Formula One (3rd in the French Grand Prix), raced MGs in the Mille Miglia and broke the Land Speed Record in Thunderbolt that was built in the old KLG factory at Kingston Vale. In November 1939 George became not only the Land Speed Record holder, but the first man to attain 300 mph. In the 1980’s Mole Valley Motor Group was formed by Charles Eyston and James Tilling, and dealt exclusively in low mileage sports cars, such as Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, and even Panthers. Mole Valley was always an interesting place, and Grand Prix racers from the 1950’s and 1960’s who James used to know from his time with the Jaguar Race Team and commentating at Le Mans used to drop in for lunch - Innes Ireland, George Abecassis, Mike Salmon and Jack Fairman were regular visitors.
In 1995 Mole Valley became a dealer for TVR and the passion for racing was re-ignited! In 1996 Mole Valley launched themselves into the Tuscan Challenge with their own luminescent green Tuscan. From then on in our first season we worked up to a regular top six runner and the highest placed new dealer team in the exciting series. In 1997 we teamed up with Rollcentre Racing for what turned out to be a very successful partnership. That year we secured third place in the Championship and in 1998 we won the Tuscan Championship, a fair achievement for a Dealer Team, in a very competitive field of some 40 entrants! 2000 - We built and entered a Cerbera GTO in the British GT Championship and won the prestigious Spa Franconchamps race. In 2001 and 2002, we moved to the new Tuscan R, winning many races, and very nearly winning the Championship in 2002. This background passion for motorsport has helped give our sales team here at Mole Valley the knowledge to help our customers choose the performance car best suited to their needs, and we are always happy to offer sound advice to make sure our customers really do purchase the car of their dreams! To this day we maintain the philosophy that customers should always be treated in the same manner that we would expect if purchasing a car, put simply “nice cars to nice people” and always with courtesy and hopefully some humour!

If you’re thinking of buying a performance car, you’ll want to talk to the experts. Keith Addison at Addspeed is just that. A specialist car junkie who can help pair you with the perfect Porsche*
K
eith Addison’s fascination with specialist cars started at an early age, fuelled by the fact that he did his apprenticeship under the expert eye of an ex-Bentley racing team mechanic in the 1960s. Once qualified, Keith joined Malaya garage in Billingshurst, which, at that time, was a Porsche and MercedesBenz agent. In 1978 he decided to set up his own business, Addspeed, specialising in servicing and repairing high performance vehicles. Keith is still going strong and enjoying life in the fast lane. To this day there are still many loyal customers who have been with him from the very beginning. The key to Keith’s winning ethos is to ensure that whatever Addspeed does, it does it well – and that includes looking after customers. The fact that Addspeed has always worked on a number of different makes – although Porsche makes up around 80 per cent of the load – means that Keith is well qualified to voice his opinion on the pros
and cons of the various cars at the top end of the performance market. In August 2015 the workshop moved to a larger premises in Foundry Close, Horsham, to accommodate the growing business. The team at Addspeed offers a full range of services from servicing and maintenance to full engine rebuilds. Keith has worked hard over the years to create a business that runs things on a very open and friendly basis which enables the keen motorist to be more involved in the work being undertaken. The workshop constantly has a vast array of Marques, both old and new, ranging from your daily run-arounds to a Lamborghini Gallardo. Although the core business has always been repair and servicing work, Addspeed is also involved in motor sport. The team has been involved in several projects over the years,
ranging from upgrading a 993 to RS specifications for track day use; to most recently sponsoring and preparing a Porsche 997 Cup car that a local firm is racing in the Britcar Endurance Championship. The Addspeed team offers a full range of services through their multi-talented technicians on any car to ensure that your vehicle performs as well as the day it was made – hopefully even better.

Fiat 500X Fiat 500X The little 500 has been working out!
Fiat has maxed out its popular 500 model. Fine’s motoring writer, Ade Holder, takes the Fiat 500X for a spin. 66 | fine
manage to ride nice and high, and with the X styling pack, look like an SUV but most importantly it still looks cool. It is almost like Fiat just inflated the 500 until it looked big enough to be an SUV, but the great thing is that the car seems to still be in proportion. Nothing looks oddly sized or out of place, it really works.
Space and Pace
T
o say the Fiat 500 is a household name is somewhat of an understatement, OK so it might not be quite as iconic in this country as the Mini but globally this little Italian car is as famous as it is loved. As with the aforementioned Mini and the equally classic Volkswagen Beetle the 500 got the “re-make” treatment after the original model ended production in 1975. This 2007 version saw much of the original charm brought up to date in a very neat and very cool little package. Now, once again following the Mini trend, Fiat are rolling out other versions of the iconic car in the hope of creating a Fiat 500 for everyone. They are quite a bit behind BMW with their multitude of Mini models but do not let that put you off. It is also worth trying to block the somewhat unattractive Fiat 500L from your mind when you read this review as this latest version of the 500 is a considerably better offering.
What is a Compact SUV? The SUV segment is huge, it seems every man woman and their shared dog seems to be able to find a reason to have a high riding 4X4 look-alike if it’s just to go to the shops but size often an issue so along came the Compact SUV. These mini versions of the school run classic allow people to enjoy all the benefits of an SUV without the fuel costs, carbon footprint and the worry about getting in and out of those tight multi storey parking spaces. It is in this highly popular sub segment that the Fiat 500X fits and it fits very well indeed.
The Look OK, so this was always going to be the hard part. Anyone can make a mini SUV if they ignore the styling, but to attempt to keep the cute and cool look of the 500 while still creating a purposeful and potentially capable SUV was a big ask. The bottom line here is Fiat have pretty much done it! The 500X seems to somehow
Well SUV’s very rarely have to worry about being fast but that being said there is also no excuse for being painfully slow either. The test car I had was the 1.6 diesel Multijet and I have to say it was certainly perky enough to stop me grumbling. There are a number of more powerful models which run right up to a 170 bhp version but the 120bhp test car certainly did the job. Once thing an SUV really does have to offer is space and the 500X once again did not disappoint. I did struggle to get our rather large Mountain Buggy in the boot but the cabin was very airy with plenty of space for 4 adults and the boot would be ample for most shopping and travelling needs.
Riding High and Getting Dirty The 500X doesn’t quite offer the king of the road style ride height you might expect from a larger SUV but it is certainly elevated. On top of that the handling is very robust, solid and safe feeling. You really feel like the car has the confidence to take on more than just the school run and that is the point after all. Fiat do offer a number of two wheel drive versions for those who never intend to take the car off road but they also make sure there are all wheel drive models for those who want it. Of course to get the full fat version you might have to dig a little deeper into those pockets as these versions start at £22,000 whereas the entry level standard version is around £14,000. It would seem a waste not to go for AWD if the budget would stretch because this little car really wants to take on a little of the rough stuff even if it ends up just being a muddy field full of tents on a family camping trip. You certainly feel it would not leave you stuck where others might be.
All Things To All Men …Well, perhaps that is a little over the top but the 500X really does have a number of hats and it wears them all very well. Family car, cool and cutesy shopping car, part time off roader and above all a Fiat 500. It is important to say it is not so “cute” that I would not be happy driving around in it, but it does hang on to enough of the 500 styling and retro interior to keep fans of the original happy. It seems all that time in the gym lifting weights has paid off for the 500X, I wonder what’s next!

A stylish stay in Nestled in the Bay of Naples, just off the Italian Riviera, the beautiful island of Capri has provided a playground for the rich and famous for generations. Simonetta Nutt of Symphony World Travel puts one of the company’s trips to the test.
F
rom the moment we arrived in Capri, it was clear that the weekend would be one of luxury and style.
Firstly, there was a private yacht waiting to transport us across the bay of Naples, with a taxi waiting on arrival at Capri to take us up to the Piazzetta. Secondly, we did not have to handle our luggage at all. Once we had been met by the company handler at Naples, the luggage was taken by boat and straight to our hotel. Even if you take the funicular railway up from the Marina Grande to the Piazzetta, your luggage will still be taken care of for you, leaving you free to enjoy the trip and views as you travel to the town above. From the piazza, we meandered through the streets, passing many gorgeous shops, trying very hard not to indulge before we had even unpacked. A few minutes later, we arrived at our destination, the sumptuous five star Tiberio Palace Hotel, where we were greeted by smiling, helpful staff.
Capri
Palace, you can’t help but be struck by the eclectic décor. Even the staff are beautifully coordinated in their smart uniforms. The whole place has been lovingly put together and each time you walk around you notice another sculpture or picture that might not have caught your eye on previous perambulation. Each suite is individually decorated and themed. We were lucky to stay in the Pan Am suite. The top suite plays homage to Sofia Loren. In keeping with the beautiful surroundings, there is a wonderfully relaxing spa, with all manner of terrific treatments on offer and the indoor pool with its magnificent sea view is hard to resist. So if you are unlucky with the weather, as we were, you can still have a great time by making the most of the hotel and its facilities. The food served in the restaurant is as you would expect at
this luxurious establishment. The menu is filled with interesting and delicious dishes that you will savour and remember for a very long time. As the location of the hotel is so central, it is very easy to wander the myriad beautiful shops in the main town of Piazzetta. The only difficulty you may have is in deciding which shops to enter and what to buy. Capri is a magical island with much to see. The Grotto Azzurra (Blue Grotto) and the Tiberio Palace should be top of the list for anyone with a love for beautiful, Italian design. Boarding school bliss
If the idea of boarding schools conjures up images of Enid Blyton’s clandestine midnight feasts or drafty dormitories and things that go “bump” in the night, it may be time to think again. Hurstpierpoint College offers up the case for boarding at school and the new, flexible ways to do it | 75
W
hen deciding on boarding options, increasing numbers of parents are choosing flexi or weekly boarding for their children. In addition, it is often the children that are asking their parents if they can join in with school “sleepovers”. Boarding at an independent school can fall into three categories; full boarding, weekly boarding and flexi boarding. Whilst full boarding involves living at school seven days a week and weekly boarding five nights a week, flexi boarding allows pupils to board for a few nights on days of their choice. Different schools operate their boarding in different ways, at Hurstpierpoint College, the boarding community includes all three categories, with flexi and weekly proving most popular. Flexi boarding really is flexible, as pupils can choose to board on any three nights each week, which can be changed on a weekly basis, while retaining their own bed and study desk throughout the term. As all pupils participate in co-curricular activities many find this particularly beneficial, as do parents who need to juggle busy lifestyles. Hurst’s weekly boarders have two options: to stay Sunday to Thursday or Monday to Friday, removing the stresses of a daily commute and allowing more time for cocurricular activities and study. Full boarding is available for pupils whose parents work away from home or live abroad and is normally only available for Sixth Formers. So what are the benefits of boarding? Adam Hopcroft, Housemaster of Red Cross boys’ house at Hurst said, “Boarding gives pupils a work-home balance. School life at Hurst is busy and so boarding provides pupils with the chance to take part in extra-curricular sport, drama or music after school.” However the benefits of boarding extend far beyond the extra-curricular options. Adam believes boarding gives pupils an advantage academically. “Boarding pupils have more access to their teachers as well as their friends. At Hurst our pupils work in study groups during Prep and as house parents we make sure they are productive during this time. If they work well it allows them to have the whole weekend free without homework.” The Lower Sixth girls in Hurst’s Martlet house agree. Flexi boarder Tori comments, “Boarding helps to structure home time because you get all your work done in the boarding house and then home is fun time!” Hurst’s Lower Sixth students Ellie, Jess and Olivia describe their boarding experiences; “At Hurst the Lower Sixth don’t have to do work during Prep time, we can read in our rooms instead, but because we learn
76 | fine
to work during Prep from Shell [Year 9] onwards, we do it then anyway because you’re already in ‘school mode’. Boarding changes the way you work.” Kathren Lea, Housemistress of Martlet believes that a boarding environment gives students a strong foundation for their future. “With a mix of international pupils and flexi boarders the girls are making connections they wouldn’t normally make. They are making connections with lifelong friends.” Year 10 Hurst student Becky agrees; “When you board you become better friends with the other boarders because you live with them you get to know them more personally.” Kathren goes on to say: “As boarders the children have to learn skills for life, which is preparation for their future. In Martlet our girls grow up in a supportive environment surrounded by strong women who are kind and caring. Martlet becomes their second home.” Boarding is excellent preparation for university. In the Upper Sixth, all pupils move into the co-educational house, St John’s, where boarders have their own single study bedrooms and the house ethos is based around preparing pupils for university. However, boarding from an earlier age also gives pupils independence with the security net of mum and dad close by.
In modern families where both parents are working full-time and childcare is expensive, boarding means parents don’t need to worry about the school run every day and can be confident that their child is taking part in educational activities or being supervised with their homework. This leaves weekends free for quality family time. For children, boarding is a way to spend more time with their peers at a big sleepover, whilst fully immersed in their academic and co-curricular studies. They can be better prepared for the school day, instead of experiencing the hassle of travelling to and from school each day. They also have the opportunity to take part in activities they wouldn’t normally do, as well as learning the life skills to enable them to become independent and confident young adults. Hurst is becoming known as the school where you board because you choose to, rather than need to. “I live 10 minutes away but I board because I enjoy it”, said Megan in the Lower Sixth. To find out more about boarding at Hurst and take a tour of the boarding facilities, please visit our next Open Day on Saturday 24th September. Art in
numbers
Maths leaves a lot of people cold, but when applied to every day life and to specialist skills it becomes the foundation for everything, which is why it’s so important to get kids excited about numbers. Frances Mwale, Prep Headmistress at Farlington School offers Fine readers some tips.
T
he French mathematician, Henri Poincare, described mathematics, unlike poetry, as “the art of giving the same name to different things”. I like this definition as, rather than being all about right or wrong answers, it suggests that creativity, relationships and rich language, are integral to the subject.
Just learning rules to manipulate number is not enough: a literacy equivalent would be reading letter e, knowing the sound it makes but then not being able to use it in different words. Making decisions about why and when to use methods, even devise new ones, is what gives mathematics its intrinsic appeal.
Nottingham and Oxford Universities were recently awarded over £2million towards solving the world’s 6 unsolved mathematical problems, yet press and Government releases inform us that the UK is falling behind many other countries. PISA results (Programme for International Student Assessment) show that our 15-year-olds lag behind the Far East and others in terms of what they attain in tests.
No subject is in complete isolation. In order to understand mathematics, we use the language of notation and recognise its symbols. Young learners have to equate a number symbol, say 5, with 5 ducks, or 5p or 5 pupils. They have to take on board a complete vocabulary - the language of mathematics - beginning with comparisons such as big and small, difference between, larger than.
A public admission at being terrible at reading or writing is pretty unthinkable, yet it seems acceptable for adults to say, ‘I was never any good at maths’ as a way of excusing a lack of progress, for them or for their children. In school we find children who really love maths: they enjoy problem solving, finding solutions and for some, not having to write loads! Mathematics possibly conjures up for you thoughts of endless algorithms, but it also encompasses mathematical thinking, where patterns and relationships are key. For those who feel inept at maths, thorny topics most feared are usually algebra, fractions and division, because we fail to see the relationships between numbers: denominator compared to numerator, for example.
Working with 2 ½ year olds, I was fascinated that they could identify biggest and smallest, but could not place 3 frogs in ascending size order. Just as we crawl before we walk, we reverse letters and numbers before we finally master their formation, so in mathematics, we move forwards at age-appropriate stages. Instead of moving on to ‘harder’ concepts, we go deeper and wider with mathematical learning. Being good at maths is often equated with being quick; that mental maths and correct answers are the only success indicators. But to push back the boundaries of mathematical thinking, we have to see problems in a new light and ask different questions. With developed teaching methods, greater application, less rote learning or endless columns of sums, why
are we less good at manipulating number in our heads? As a child, I would visit local shops to spend my pocket money, working out change and handing over the right coins. I measured and made clothes for my dolls, weighed out ingredients for cooking and played games that required adding and subtracting: there were always valid reasons for practising. Classroom challenges really motivate when children make the discoveries: working out primes, inventing sequences, deciphering codes. Ideas that seem neat and clever, can be so rewarding. My master’s research looked into the use of language in mathematics. It began with the notion that we use internal language in our heads when thinking. Young children babble aloud about everything they do and then gradually that commentary changes to silent thinking. Internalising the ‘talk’ can be difficult and so my study encouraged speaking to support all areas of mathematical learning. We should be asking challenging questions of young children: replacing ‘Look at the pretty rabbit’ with ‘How many can you see? Are they all the same size? How fast can they run?’ As parents and teachers, we need to grab every opportunity to bring meaning to the language of mathematics. So, how best can you support your child in their mathematical learning? I would suggest by getting creative with them. Do not just provide a diet of sums, or drill and practise computer games, but allow them to enjoy number, to use mathematics as a regular part of their daily activities, to experience reaching wrong answers then find out why, boosted by the joy of discovering new possibilities. Make thinking as concrete as possible, linking the abstract mysteries of symbols and digits, to bricks, counters, sweets –anything that can be handled and moved around, showing patterns and differences. Most importantly, make full use of mathematical language to promote deeper thinking.
