There’s no shortage of places to get hitched across Sussex and Surrey, but to make your day supremely special, we’ve found a couple of venues off the beaten track that combine history and heritage with beauty and style to help make your perfect day perfect in every way.
Leonardslee Gardens, Sussex Closed since 2010, Leonardslee Gardens in Lower Beeding, just outside Horsham, has been lovingly restored. The beautiful country estate boasts stunning formal and ornamental gardens, a number of lakes, extensive woodlands, local wildlife and the odd wallaby as well. It is the perfect setting for a stylish wedding ceremony and reception. The Italianate manor house is Listed Grade II and is a beautiful setting for wedding ceremonies and celebrations, with a range of additional services from which to choose for your special day. The manor house is available for wedding bookings for up to 60 people for a wedding breakfast and up to 180 in the gardens’ marquee, adjacent to the house. Before they were closed to public access in 2010, the landscaped woodland gardens attracted some 50,000 visitors a year. They were first planted in 1801 and are noted for the outstanding spring displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells.

Visitors were also attracted by a unique doll’s house exhibition, depicting the Edwardian estate and neighbouring villages at 1/12th scale, and a rare colony of wallabies that have grazed in the gardens for over a century. The gardens are listed Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. They cover 200 acres of a steep sandstone valley, in which there are a series of seven man-made ponds. The site includes two alpine glasshouses, in need of refurbishment. A rock garden near the house was built in 1890 by the well-known Victorian landscaping company James Pulham and Son. Leonardslee is now part of the same group as the Mannings Heath Hotel and will become a wine destination, thanks to wines from its sister vineyard in South Africa and the cultivation of a 35 acre vineyard on site. Couples planning their wedding can choose from three approved caterers to meet their wedding breakfast needs. Anise Catering provides menus that offer every concept from the stylish and modern through to the traditional and classic. Food is prepared in the Anise kitchens and

transferred to Leonardslee for finishing with the utmost care. They use only natural products and exclude genetically modified foods from our menus wherever possible. Ingredients are all sourced using local suppliers and all the fish we serve comes from sustainable sources. Rhubarb creates tailor-made catering with beautiful presentation and forwardthinking creative flair for your special day, bringing together award-winning food design, innovative creative production and years of expert industry experience to deliver a celebration like no other. The product is stylish and menus are deliciously different. Etch can cater for up to 150 guests. Headed by Steven Edwards, a British Chef, best known for winning the 6th series of MasterChef: The Professionals in 2013, dishes are ingredient led and utilise quality produce from in and around the Sussex countryside. Double Michelin starred chef Michel Roux Jnr. commented: “His food is lovely. West Horsley Place If you want to follow in the footsteps of royalty, West Horsley Place in Surrey is the ideal wedding venue. Since the 15th century the house has been a very elegant private residence, welcoming a number of illustrious owners and royal visitors including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The house is known for its beautiful 17th century brick façade and a wonderful selection of rooms, including the spacious and elegant Stone Hall with original fireplace, large sumptuous first floor drawing room, a cosy and intimate booklined library and a sunny morning room. In addition, the romantic walled gardens offer the perfect backdrop for wedding photographs and feature various areas where a marquee could be located. Three years ago West Horsley Place came into the public eye when historian and former presenter of University Challenge, Bamber Gascoigne, unexpectedly inherited the estate from his aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe and collaborated with the Trust of the Grange Park Opera to create a smaller version of La Scala - the famous opera house in Milan - in the woods behind the house.
To enable others to enjoy this atmospheric country house and gardens, Bamber and Christina Gascoigne generously transferred ownership of West Horsley Place to a newly-formed charity, The Mary Roxburghe Trust. Income from the weddings, private events and filming will help MRT with their charitable mission to restore and care for West Horsley Place. West Horsley Place has created an exclusive partnership with premium food experience brand and event caterer Rhubarb. This is the first time that this beautiful and historically important house and gardens have been available for private hire. Rhubarb will work with clients to create bespoke wedding receptions featuring creative dishes such as seared scallops with cauliflower and truffle followed by guinea fowl breast with herb gnocchi, wild mushrooms, broad beans and watercress velouté and apple parfait with a salted caramel centre, caramel popcorn crumb and apple sorbet. Fine spoke to Rosie Carne of Rosemary Jane Designs about how she helps brides make sure they have the dress of their dreams for their big day.

ost brides fit into one of two camps: the quirky, nothing is too wild bride and the demure, classical ivory bride. But many fall somewhere in between, looking for a gown that suits their figure and budget, but that also reflects their personality and style. Rosie Carne is keen to stress that to have a bespoke dress you don’t need to be a specific type or have a massive pot of cash. Dresses can be tailored to a budget and there are always choices to be made on design and fabric. To Rosie, it’s the variety that makes her job so enjoyable as no two dresses have ever been the same. Rosie has spent years making beautiful costumes for films including Cinderella, Dr. Strange and Snow White & the Huntsman. What I’m obsessed with, apart from great shoes and sequins, is making even more special dresses designed in collaboration with you lovely brides. She created Rosemary Jane Designs
after friends and family kept asking her to design or customise their wedding dresses. Rosie specialises in injecting colour and fun into wedding dresses. Rosie says: “When brides come to me to have their dress designed, they normally fall into two categories. The type that need telling and the type which know exactly. First, we will sit down and look at images for inspiration. Some will try on a few of my samples and I’ll do a few sketches. Sometimes brides will come back for a second consultation to refine the design further. I then cost up the design and take measurements. “Brides will generally have three fittings, sometimes two. The first fit is usually just a basic bodice and skirt so that I can get a good shape to put the rest of the design on. The second fitting has all the design done except for hem, fastenings and sometimes decoration. At the final fitting, the dress is complete, steamed and ready to leave the studio providing there are no outstanding little adjustments.”

Kate had a very set idea about what she wanted. She’d seen a photo of a dress on Pinterest and despite a serious amount of internet research she couldn’t find it. We met at a wedding fair, she showed me the photo and the rest is history.

Her dress has all this fabulous silk painting and ombre dyeing so we had to enlist the help of a textile artist, Kate found Lauren Thomas (Instagram @ laurenthomasdesigns). To go about making her dress, I had to first make a toile (mock up) using plain organza to figure out how the dress was going to work. With the plain organza I could play on the mannequin and drape the fabric to suit Kate’s figure. Meanwhile Lauren did various samples so that Kate could decide exactly how she wanted the flowers and which colours she wanted more of. Once the toile was fitted, Lauren and I could talk about where to put certain details to maximise her designs on the dress. I then started to make the basic shape in the silk organza, which was then sent to Lauren to work her magic. While Lauren was doing her work, I was making the corset, underskirts and petticoats. When the fabric came back, it was then a matter of draping the fabric in the same way as the toile. When Kate came in for the final fitting, Lauren was present and we all got a bit giddy with excitement at what we had created!
Polly had no proper idea, she knew she wanted something timeless and lacy sleeves. She tried on a few samples and we quickly decided that an A line skirt from the waist with no gathers or pleats were the way forward. She loved the organza for how it fell softly and I embroidered the hem with daisies, her favourite ower. Polly’s colour theme for the day was blue so we used pale blue ribbon on her petticoat, a Rosemary Jane Design signature. For the bodice, we decided to dip the back as she has lovely skin. Also, the line from a wide shoulder to a low back and narrower waist with an A line skirt creates an optical illusion of the waist being smaller than it is. This is also helped with a sparkly belt to make it looked cinched in.

in Tromsø
Known as both the “Paris of the North” and the “Capital of the Arctic”, Tromsø, is Norway’s northern-most city. Located within the Arctic circle, it has become something of a Mecca for travellers hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights. Fine Editor, Catherine Ross, spent a long weekend in the frozen north.
T
he city of Tromsø itself sits on Tromsøya Island, part of the archipelago that makes up the northern coast of Norway. Inhabited since the ice age, Tromsø was issued with its city charter in 1794 and became a busy fishing hub. Since then, the city has grown to a population of over 70,000, hosts a selection of international hotels and is a global centre for environmental research. As a result, Tromsø manages to feel modern and cosmopolitan, while retaining the historic charm of a compact island city. Ten years ago, the majority of Tromsø’s tourist traffic arrived in the summer for fjord cruises and sea fishing. In the intervening decade, bolstered in no small part by travellers sharing their Northern Lights photos on social media, the September to March season has grown to support record visitor numbers. Marcus Ahlund, of Explore the Arctic has been at the forefront of the change. “Ten years ago, I was mostly running summer tours. Back then, mine was one of only two or three companies offering Northern Lights excursions. Now there are more than thirty.”
What to do There’s so much to do in and around Tromsø. Three days is just about enough to get a good introduction, but it’s definitely possible to spend longer and find exciting excursions with which to fill your time. Northern Lights Tour It’s the reason so many people flock north throughout the winter months, so a good Northern Lights Tour is a must. All tours are not created equal, with many new kids on the block, travellers should be wary of where they book. Explore the Arctic is fully insured tour company with luxurious Mercedes minibuses. Their Northern Lights tours include a video introduction to the Lights, a campfire dinner, warm clothes and boots and photographic tuition. Although the lights are present every night of the year, they’re only visible from

September to March and then intensity varies and cloud cover will completely scupper your chances of seeing this remarkable natural phenomenon. Explore the Arctic monitor weather and cloud forecasts and travel to different locations to maximise your chances of seeing the lights. The intensity of the light show is currently at its peak in a 11-year cycle, so get in quick! The lights, when they do appear, are truly breath-taking. Swirling across the sky in a luminous ballet of green (and, if you’re lucky, red and purple too) it can be tempting only to view the spectacle through a viewfinder to share on social media, but don’t forget to take the time to really see it, in the moment, with your naked eyes. Tromsø Icedomes Built using the same techniques as the Icehotels, Tromsø Icedomes is the region’s newest attraction. A 45 minute bus ride from Tromsø, the Icedomes are located at Camp Tamok, close to the border with Finland. The team built the icedomes for the first time in 2017 in the coldest part of Norway, where temperatures remain well below freezing for the majority of the winter. Chinese ice artists created the spectacular sculptural interiors.

Thanks to a fascinating trick of nature, the internal temperature stays at a steady minus five degrees throughout the season. For its inaugural year, the Icedomes features a bar, restaurant, cinema and one bedroom. For winter 2018, there are plans to create 12 luxury bedrooms to offer overnight accommodation. Also at Camp Tamok, visitors can enjoy husky sledding and skidoo tours, while two cosy restaurant huts and an on-site sauna offer somewhere a little warmer to thaw out. Winter Fjord Cruise The Arctic landscape is astonishingly beautiful and unspoilt and best seen from sea level. Explore the Artic hosts daily Fjord cruises throughout the winter, touring the islands and fjords that make up the north coast of Norway. In the coldest months, lucky tourists have seen pods of whales. Throughout the season, many are fortunate enough to see seals and sea eagles; enormous birds with a colossal wingspan and terrifying beaks and talons. Guests on the Explore the Arctic tours can also try their hands at a spot of rod and line sea fishing, with the option of taking the catch home for tea. The tour finishes back on dry land

Exploring the city Much of Tromsø is still made up of historic, wood clad buildings, making it a beautiful city to explore on foot. Of particular interest are the two cathedrals. The Arctic Cathedral, built in the 1960s and inspired by the shape of the rocky island of Håja is an icon of the Tromsø skyline. Visit at night and enjoy one of the Northern Lights concerts every Thursday to Sunday night between 9 February and 11 March. You can hear beautiful music in the form of religious folk music, classical music, Sami music (joik) and ballads. The concerts start at 11pm, allowing time to take the Fjellheisen aerial tramway for one of the best views of the city.

Creating a better future through drama When Fifth Form students begin to weigh up their A-level options, they are bombarded with advice from teachers, careers advisors and parents alike and very often this becomes the basis for perhaps the most important decision that they have had to make as far as their educational life is concerned. tudents need to carefully consider which subjects will best facilitate their chosen pathway, the balance between their short-listed subjects and will their eventual choice of subjects be those that universities will favour? These are dangerous times for the 16+ age group, with increased pressure being applied in schools, coupled with the reality of how expensive university education has become - which adds even greater pressure to the next generation of young adults in this country. There can be little objection to the view that the emphasis in schools has firmly shifted towards the core subjects in recent years, but at what cost to the students’ overall educational experience? In amongst the reforms and re-reforms lies an unchanging mantra when it comes to the role of the teacher. We are here to help students build their future and enable them to take brave and informed decisions that are right for them. This generation will face the most competitive employment environment ever and it will be the small margins that help them progress. Studying drama at any level allows students to make cognitive and physical connections with the world around them in a variety of mediums, with no fear of being right or wrong. The range of skills experienced in a single lesson provides the student with tools that will inevitably be used in other situations. It is these skills that employers refer to as soft skills - the personal attributes, traits, inherent social cues and communication abilities - needed for success in the workplace. Soft skills characterise how a person interacts in their relationships with others and, unlike the job-specific hard skills, are much harder to learn in most classroom environments. The teaching and studying of drama in schools naturally exposes students to
every aspect of the soft skills definition and engaging with them at a young age prompts a far more instinctive young adult. Whether through improvisation, or engaging with a character in a script, a drama student must employ imagination in their work and be brave in making decisions that an audience can engage with. Some students are more naturally able to perform than others but that is not the purpose of drama from a curricular point of view. Over the course of an academic year, each student is able to progress even if that is simply engaging with others in a more confident manner. To truly develop these skills takes time and, too often, drama is seen as a subject for younger students that is replaced by other subjects later in their school career, when these skills should actually be honed further from 13+ onwards. With a foundation of creativity established, the GCSE and A-level courses enable students to tackle the more complex elements of the subject. These include knowledge and understanding of history, philosophy, language, literature, maths, science as well as the other creative arts. The typical drama student must be able to access knowledge of these subjects at all times but can do so with a far more creative and expressive approach. On a number of occasions, I have heard drama in the curriculum described as a soft subject – ironic, in many ways, that such a subject naturally induces the soft skills that may well provide a young adult with their first steps into professional life. It is vital that schools do everything they can to preserve this – and all other creative subjects - if they are genuinely working towards creating a better future for their students.

Volvo has never really been what you might call a normal brand. For years during the 80s they were known for being safe but certainly not cool. The in the 90s they put out some pretty fast estate cars even the police liked and used. Fineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motoring correspondent, Ade Holder, takes the S90 D4 out for a test drive to see how Volvo has evolved. 42 | fine
button. Why is it like this? Who knows, but being different is a good thing and when it works this well why not? The rest of the interior literally screams build quality and care. It feels like everything was planned and build just for this car rather than being hijacked from a previous model and re based. If you care about subtle design and a careful approach to interior planning then the S90 is for you! The audio system is fantastic and the iPad sized infotainment screen is really one of the easiest to use and the best I have ever tried. It is mounted vertically so is easy to reach without lifting your arm up to the height of the dashboard. It is also very intuitive and wonderfully intuitive. The Drive The 2.0 Litre 184 bhp diesel is certainly not a fast engine and it won’t be competing with the more powerful German rivals. But, it is certainly functional and suffers no lack of power in terms of everyday use. It is, in its perfunctory nature, perhaps not the most exciting thing about the car but it will do everything you need to do with class and ease. It won’t, however, be scaring anyone’s mother in law anytime soon. It is a front wheel drive car for all but the very top model the D5. Once again this sets it against the German tradition of rear wheel drive and could put some of those buyers off but the handling is supple and very positive. The car doesn’t second guess you and is happy to be throw around if needs be. The ride is firm but compliant, it does not wallow but it soaks up the B road bumps very well.
Volvo was always a brand for those who loved the marque but not for those who might be shopping around. After Ford bought the make things got a little dull but since their Chinese acquisition Volvo have really started becoming a brand that people desire. The XC90 SUV is hugely successful and has even become a bit of a “dream” car for a lot of 30 something’s and it is off the back of this Volvo hopes the S90 will do well too. Rivals Before even talking about the car itself it is really important to look at what the S90 is up against. It is in the business/ luxury saloon segment and as such has to content with some big names. The BMW 5 series, Audi A6 and the Mercedes E Class all pretty much own the market and have done for a long time. Can the S90 compete and even beat some of these household names?
Looks The first thing you really notice as you walk up to the S90 is the styling, it looks great. Gone are the boxy days of Volvos of old. We now get a sleek but muscular front end and strong stance all the way to the back. It is perhaps not a car likely to stir great emotions in a teenage car fan but for those who wish to have a car that speaks of subtlety and style then the S90 certainly weighs in well. Inside It is worth keeping in mind the test car I had was the top spec model and a good £3000 more than the base model; however even the lower models are well equipped. Volvo have always done things a little different and the latest cars remain in keeping with that sentiment. The ignition system is a small dial you turn on the central console rather than a key or
There is an estate version called the V90 which will certainly be appealing for people with families and the like. The S90 however offers the business traveller or the saloon fan a very serious option when it comes to choosing between a German standard or something a little different. There is absolutely no doubt at all the Volvo is very well built, the quality simply oozes from every pore and you just get the feeling it will never go wrong! It is not cheap at around £45,000 for the Inscription test car I had but that was well spec’d and removing a few luxuries might make it a little more affordable for some. Volvo has managed to make a sleek, stylish and effortlessly composed and comfortable car. It is not a shouty high flying entrepreneur, it is something of a refined and well educated expert sitting quietly at the back of the room ready to impress and wow when called upon to speak.

Documenting Richard’s career, the show features a wonderful selection of original pieces and limited edition prints at one-off prices.

ichard has demonstrated a passion and commitment to wildlife over the course of his successful career. Entirely self-taught and pursuing a string of commissions including amongst others Harley–Davidson, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC, he decided to concentrate solely on painting and drawing wild animals in their natural habitat. Following his continuous passion and love of wildlife, Richard soon found himself on safari in game parks throughout Africa. Each research trip brings its own highs and lows, seeing the wonders of the natural world, but also the destruction inflicted by man, through poaching, hunting and the widespread abuse of animals. It is because of this that Richard has pledged to give back to the wild which inspires his art by raising funds through the sale and auction of his originals and prints. His chosen charities include: Animals Asia, The Born Free Foundation and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. This special exhibition opens on Sunday 22nd April 2018 at No Naked Walls Gallery, Bramley with a very special private view opening at 11am. aunched in 2015 this annual fair, which is held in a purpose-built marquee in the 700-acre deer park landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown, has established itself as a great source of art and desirable objects. Local residents, interior designers, collectors from London and beyond, curators, antiques lovers and those just looking for inspiration and a shopping experience with a difference can all enjoy the works of art on offer and find something unique to treasure.

The Myeloma UK Garden breathes life into RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018
The Myeloma UK Garden at Chelsea Flower Show this year is one of three major events that will mark the charity’s 21st anniversary. It is their first ever garden at a Flower Show and they are hoping that it will give a positive message about the fight against myeloma and raise awareness of Myeloma UK. The Garden was inspired by Peter King, a Myeloma UK supporter whose wife Gill and brother Graham both passed away in 2016 after being diagnosed with the cancer. The sculpture at the centre of the garden is modelled on Peter and Gill’s daughter Gemma Peace and represents the role of the carer, who is often a pivotal figure in ensuring the patient remains the central focus of a diagnosis.

Myeloma UK are really delighted that RHS Gold medal winners John Everiss and Francesca Murrell have designed and will build their garden. Francesca, who lives in Sussex, is also the Founder of Nature Redesigned.
They used cutting edge 3D digital technology to create this very unique sculpture. It will weigh seven tonnes, be 12 feet high and constructed from layers of transparent blue Perspex® acrylic. Gemma’s left hand looks as though it is pushing away boulders and bog oaks, which represent plasma cells, from which the cancer arises, and symbolises the barriers and the obstacles people face in care when they suffer with myeloma. Gemma’s right hand is cupped and she appears to be gently blowing seeds and plants onto fertile soil below, to represent new treatment and as a sign of hope and growth. The Myeloma UK Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show (22-26 May) is in the Space to Grow section. It is sponsored by Bord na Móna Horticulture, Meyer Homes and The Christopher Laing Foundation.

Making a Will The main reason to make a Will is to ensure that your assets and cherished belongings pass to chosen beneficiaries on your death. In the absence of a Will it may not simply be the case that all assets will pass to a spouse or civil partner. Furthermore administering and distributing an estate where there is no Will often leads to disputes, unnecessary tax bills and additional costs.
If you are Joint Tenants the whole property will belong to both of you as one. If you are Tenants in Common you specify the shares in which you own the property, this is useful if one of you contributed a larger amount to the purchase price. Spring Cleaning your home and business Carolyn Burchell looks at the new GDPR, and what effects it might have on you.

s I write this it really does feel like spring is on its way. The view from my office window is definitely greener and the sun is glinting off the leaves of the trees. Easter is early this year, as my grandmother used to say, and we can look forward to chocolate eggs and gambolling lambs: welcome symbols of the receding winter gloom. Maybe that’s why there are so many weddings at this time of year – the coupling of seasonal and personal new beginnings.
It won’t be long before many of us will be overcome by the desire to spring clean. For me, like many business owners, this will apply to my business as well as my home. It’s a good time to take a step back, to assess and evaluate. A good opportunity to take stock – quite literally for some businesses (apologies, accountant humour). The corporate tax year runs from 1st April which is why 21% of all companies have their year-end on 31st March and an even higher proportion in
the owner-managed business sector. The fact that the UK does not run its financial year from 1st January puts us at odds with just about the whole of the rest of the world. Even more bizarre is the way in which our personal tax year runs from 6th April. It may not surprise you to know that the origins of this strange choice lie in the Treasury’s desire not to lose tax revenue. This harks back to 1752, when the British finally aligned their own calendar with that of their European neighbours – a mere 170 years after the rest of the continent moved from a Julian to a Gregorian calendar.

If you own a business, what should you be spring cleaning? My first recommendation would be that you consider whether your current trading structure is the right one for you. There have been a lot of changes to commercial and tax law in recent years; it makes sense to check that your original reasons are still valid. Would you be better off as a sole trader or a limited company? Are the financial benefits of trading as a limited company still sufficient to warrant the extra legal obligations and the loss of privacy? The changes to tax rules coming into force with the 2018-19 tax year are not as substantial as previous years; we will still have the increases to personal allowances and tax bands that we have grown accustomed to enjoying. The dividend allowance will however be cut from £5,000 to £2,000 and company car drivers will see an increase to both benefit-in-kind percentages and the diesel supplement. My second recommendation would be to cast a critical eye over your client base. Lara Morgan, entrepreneur, writes that she regularly assesses her existing customers and cuts out the least profitable 10% to make room for more lucrative contracts (I would highly commend her book “More balls than most” and any chance you get to hear her speak). However there is an alternative view on this and I can relate it to my personal experience. From time to time, I am approached by prospective clients who are dissatisfied with their current service provider. There are a variety of reasons but rarely is it the quality of the work performed. More often the problem is that they are simply not with the ‘right’ accountant for them. Another driver is the “cost-fee drift” which is a universal business issue. Sometimes the client’s needs have grown and now outstrip the agreed fee. Or the costs of running a business have escalated without a corresponding increase in the fee being charged. The result is a gap between expectation and delivery. Whatever the reason, failing to address the issue is a lose-lose situation. Rather than just cutting them loose, could it be more constructive to understand why and whether there is a way to turn the relationship around? Last but not least, and specific to 2018 25th May to be precise - are you ready for GDPR? The Global Data Protection
Regulation represents the most significant overhaul in 20 years to the laws governing the collection, storage, and use of data on living persons. It is designed to harmonise legislation across Europe as well as providing greater protection for individuals. In case you are wondering, Brexit will not affect either your duties or your rights as it will also be enacted in the Data Protection Act 2018 which the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will be responsible for enforcing. Fines for non-compliance can be as high as £17 million or 4% of global turnover which is why big business has been working on their systems and processes for some time now. It is clear conversely that many SMEs in the UK are going to have to work hard to meet the implementation deadline, given that many of them have not even started. Views vary on how strict the ICO will be; some experts have promoted the stance that it will make an example of those who fail to comply. However Elizabeth Denham, the UK’s Information Commissioner, has stated publicly that “it’s scaremongering to suggest that we’ll be making early examples of organisations for minor infringements or that maximum fines will become the norm”. She goes on to say that it should be a “step change” for businesses that are already compliant with existing legislation. The main ICO website is a great source of information and practical tools (ico.org.uk) and the ICO blog covers many topical aspects. I particularly like their blog on “GDPR – sorting the fact from the fiction” and will be tuning into their podcasts. Well that’s probably quite enough of an insight into why I am a natural-born accountant and the state of my social life. Horsham Coffee Roasters began in the
garage of Amelia and Bradley Steenkamp in 2012. Since then we’ve grown (though we’re still a small team of just 7 people) but what drives us stays the same. Our goal is to source the best, ethically traded coffees in the world and through developing a highly methodical approach to roasting with the highest possible focus on quality control, bring them to our customers. Alongside the philosophy that has informed our development over the years our core focus for sourcing has become our Relationship Coffees. These are coffees sourced by us through direct links with farmers and producers alongside our import partners. Currently we have established partnerships in Rwanda and Costa Rica. Well chosen importing partners are essential to match us with farmers and co-operatives that are dedicated to producing specialty grade (i.e. the highest possible quality) coffees. We are committed to purchasing ethically traded coffees with full traceability to its origins. We also endeavour to obtain full transparency of our coffee’s financial trail, giving us and our customers peace of mind that each farmer has been well paid for the outstanding coffee they produce. The coffees we stock will typically be exclusive, specialty lots that have been carefully scrutinised by us through our own cupping and quality control procedures. We roast in the medium to light colour range allowing for the characteristics of each coffee to dominate and enabling versatility across multiple brew methods.
We are fanatical about the quality our coffee, and this obsession goes from the green coffee we purchase right through to the final cup.
