onsidering there seems to be no sign of summer yet, I hope you’ve managed to book a holiday somewhere hot. Whether you’re off to Europe over the next few weeks or you’re planning some winter sun in the Caribbean later in the year, this month’s issue includes a nine-page swimwear special. It’s worth a look for the glistening waters alone. And if you happen to spot something nice to wear on the beach at the same time then that’s a bonus. If, however, you’d like to stay a little closer to home this year, we’ve chosen six great venues ideal for a Sussex staycation; places where you can rest and indulge yourself in a first class meal or some five star pampering - all just a stone’s throw from wherever you may be in the county. And speaking of ways to spend your free time, how about attending the most sophisticated soirée possible? If the answer’s yes, you’ll want to read our lead story about By Invitation Only Events on page 14. The new company was set up by a local entrepreneur, Philip Allan. He’s been in the events business for years, he loves a good party - and you’re invited to the next. If you’ve got children, take a look at this month’s education section. We focus on the subject of Art with input from a range of teachers as well as our

e’ve been through a long winter not to mention a pretty long economic downturn. But things are looking up – and it’s time to party. Thankfully, there’s a young entrepreneur in town who loves to throw a sensational soiree. Philip Allan is a former communications professional and events planner who has spent a number of years working in London. Now, the Sussex resident has put his organisation skills and eye for all things glamorous to good use by setting up events company, By Invitation Only. The concept behind his new venture is to organise luxury, exquisite events for a discerning clientele all of whom love a good bash. Initially, parties will be held

at exclusive venues across the South in five star hotels and top restaurants and will be a chance to mix with your friends or meet new ones. Parties in the pipeline include galas, balls, black tie dinners, social mixers, casino nights and wine tastings. And the best bit is that you are invited. Philip told Fine Sussex: “I love a party. And I know there are plenty of people in the area who would welcome the chance to attend something exclusive yet fun in the right setting. There will be no expense spared. We’re taking about glittering affairs as well as smaller more intimate gathering but every single one will be carefully put together with the kind of attention to detail that our clients expect. This is partying for partying’s sake. And why not!?”


Although guests can attend Philip’s parties on an ad-hoc or one-off basis, By Invitation Only is largely a membership-based company. For just £40 a year, members are the first to hear about the events taking place and will be given priority when purchasing tickets. There will be members only events and they can buy tickets at a discounted rate. In addition there will be exclusive offers at luxury hotels and they will of course be treated like VIPs every step of the way. The event planner added: “Being a member will make clients feel that extra bit special. Plus, they’ll never miss out on a good party because I’ll make sure they are all well informed about when they’re taking place.” In addition to organising public events, By Invitation Only can also be hired as an event planning firm for your own private events such as a birthday, anniversary dinner or corporate event. And if Philip’s past work is anything to go by, you can

be sure that these events will be of the very highest calibre. arbara Macfarlane returns to the Zimmer Stewart Gallery in June with a new series of paintings based on old maps of London and New York. In the summer of 2012 Barbara was asked to submit work for an exhibition in London to celebrate the city as host of the Olympics. Barbara exhibited three large paintings which were based on a map from 1588 by William Smith which combines a profile view with a perspective view. This was the beginning of a new development in Barbara’s work. She began investigating antique maps from the 18th and 19th centuries and has used these as starting points for her new work. Edward Weller’s map of central London in 1862 was the inspiration for her Red London series. These paintings are a maze of rich reds and oranges cut through with the calm blue line of the river Thames. Barbara’s work is very much about the painting rather than the map itself. Her considered use of colour and the quality of the painted marks relates directly back to her landscapes and seascapes. These paintings are filled with energetic lines, which are drawn in ink with a stick . But unlike her landscape paintings these are filled with intricate patterns of bright and intense colours. Since her recent visit to New York , Barbara has started some new work based on Manhattan maps. After the random patterns of the London streets it

has been a challenge for her to paint the grid system of Manhattan. Again, Barbara has given these paintings an energy and vibrancy which is typical of all her work. Through her use of mark making and juxtaposition of colours her paintings continue to seem effortless and free. The Manhattan map paintings will be shown in this exhibition, at Zimmer Stewart Gallery, in advance of her first solo show in New York this November. Barbara Macfarlane is well known for her abstract beach and South Downs landscapes. These subjects include Kingly Vale, Cobnor, East Head and the Witterings and are places she returns to often in her work. Barbara Macfarlane’s work is shown at Zimmer Stewart Gallery, Arundel, and Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London, with whom her works are exhibited in Europe and New York. Barbara Macfarlane has been painting for over 30 years and her works are now sought after by collectors both in the UK and abroad. James Stewart, gallery director, said: “I enjoy working with Barbara Macfarlane, she is keen to push the boundaries, and develop her work in new directions with each exhibition we put on together”. The horseracing season at Goodwood got underway in May with six fixtures having already graced what many people regard as the ‘world’s most beautiful racecourse’. The best, however, is yet to come as the venue looks forward to one of the social and sporting highlights of the year – Glorious Goodwood

P

art of the unique appeal of Goodwood Racecourse is its incredible setting. Perched high in the Sussex Downs and just four miles north of Chichester, Goodwood enjoys an unrivalled location. It forms a key part of the magnificent 12,000-acre Goodwood Estate; situated just outside Chichester with stunning views out to sea and as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day. The Racecourse hosts around 130 flat races each season: and the thrill of the chase makes for spectacular entertainment. As top racing pundit John McCririck puts it, “If you ever come racing, there is no better place than Goodwood.” There is a great deal on offer at Goodwood for all ages with plenty of entertainment laid on for younger visitors, whilst the grown-ups take advantage of the well-appointed bars and beautiful restaurants. For families there’s a brand new play area for 4 to 12 year-olds that includes a Balance Pole, climbing Log Challenge, Roundabout and Basket Swing. There’s further complimentary entertainment in true Goodwood style in the form of vintage fairground attractions, ‘chairoplanes’ and a classic Hall of Mirrors all included in the ticket price, which starts from £8.00 for adults with under 18s going free.

Glorious is widely regarded as one of the most stylish race meetings in the UK and yet, unusually, this doesn’t come about through the enforcement of stringent dress codes. In fact, it is a much more relaxed affair; top hats are replaced with Panamas, and guests in the hip Gordon Enclosure sip crisp cucumber G&Ts to the lilts of a jazz band on the East Parade Lawn. One of the highlights of Glorious is Ladies’ Day, celebrated on the Thursday of race week each year. Needless to say the style stakes are raised, and the Parade Ring is the perfect place to spot beautiful people. In honour of celebrating all things female and raising some serious sums of money for women’s charities, Goodwood launched an all-female, amateur horse race, the Magnolia Cup, in 2011. Twelve plucky ladies, selected for their outstanding achievements, were each lent a horse and taught to race by a top trainer. Famous names from the world of fashion gave their time to design the race silks, ensuring that each lady jockey looked the part. Supermodel and face of Burberry, Edie Campbell, won the inaugural event wearing silks designed by Jasmine Guinness. The Magnolia Cup has so far raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity and this year’s looks set to be another great contest.

In total there are 19 exciting days of racing offered at Goodwood over the course of the season, which runs until October. As if to prove it’s not just about horses, other highlights include the sell-out ‘Three Friday Nights’, when a top DJ set follows an evening’s racing transforming the Parade Ring into a huge dance floor . This year’s series got underway on 31 May with chart-topping Rudimental taking to the decks, while there are further events on 14 June where Andy Cato from Groove Armada will be playing, while Radio 1’s Trevor Nelson will perform at the final event on 21 June.

As the summer progresses the social calendar builds towards what is widely acknowledged as the pinnacle of the season: Glorious Goodwood (Tuesday 30 July to Saturday 3 August, 2013). Glorious is a quintessentially English event, synonymous with elegance and style. Over 100,000 people flock through the gates each year to enjoy this chic, relaxed and incredibly glamorous sell-out five-day festival that celebrates the very best from the world of fashion and horseracing. The standard of horseracing is always exceptionally high. However, for many, world class sport is really just the backdrop to a fabulous day out, and Glorious is quite unique. According to model and die-hard equestrienne Jodie Kidd, “There is something very, very special about Goodwood and especially Glorious Goodwood. It’s quintessentially English.”

14th century celebration Hurstpierpoint’s annual St Lawrence Fair will take place for the 700th year this July. Find out why it has continued every year – with the only exception being the war

T

his July, the St Lawrence Fair in Hurstpierpoint will be 700 years old. Since the 14th Century the village has celebrated the feast of its patron saint with this event, making it one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. King Edward II granted a charter that allowed this one fair a year to be held. In addition to the usual festivities, this year a commemorative statue will be unveiled in the Village Garden in the High Street. The fair takes the form of a traditional summer fete with a procession through the High Street and arena events, which take place on a recreation ground in the centre of the village. Historians say the fair has taken place virtually every year, breaking only during World Wars I and II, and in the years between the wars it was used as a means of raising money for local hospitals - it was called Hospital Saturday. Harris Brothers funfair has been a central attraction since the early years of the last century and is pitched in the village for the week before. The Feast of St Lawrence itself is in August, but in about 1775 the fair moved to May for many years before moving to July in the 1950’s. For some time it was called Hurstpierpoint Carnival but it is now St Lawrence Fair again. Hurstpierpoint has a population of around 5000 and it includes a mix of families

and retired people and a wide range of businesses and shops. On the edge of the National Park, it is in sight of the iconic Wolstonbury Hill and other noticeable landmarks include Danny House.

The Feast of St Lawrence itself is in August, but in about 1775 the fair moved to May for many years before moving to July in the 1950s There is a strong local community atmosphere with a variety of annual arts and social events including the Hurst Festival in September, now in its ninth year. The 700th anniversary was seen as an opportunity to place a permanent marker, which, following a competition run by the parish council, has been created by local artist Sylvia Thornhill. The work - Children of the Fair - shows a circular ring of children, each one dressed in a costume representing a century of the Fair’s existence. The work has been paid for by donations from local individuals and societies and will be unveiled on June 29. For more information, visit stlawrencefair.org.uk.

n the heart of West Sussex near the foothills of the South Downs sits the village of Hurstpierpoint. the past A season of events that unearth the truth about Petworth House are about to take place at the famous Sussex venue

H

elp dig up the past at Petworth House! Next month on 13 and 14 and 20 and 21 July, join an investigation into the hidden history of Petworth Park with ‘Digger’s Big Weekends’, an exciting archaeological excavation. So far this year the National Trust has been undertaking an archaeological survey at Petworth Park; delving into the archives, field walking to find clues in the parkland landscape, using geophysics to ‘see’ the archaeological remains buried beneath our feet and, quite literally, unearthing the story of the backdrop to the remarkable residence of Petworth House.

Hidden history… The park has been a dominant feature of the Petworth landscape for the best part of a thousand years. Hiding in its 700 acres are clues to Roman and Saxon use of the land all the way through to it’s use during the Second World War. Three hundred years ago the park was characterised not by the gentle rolling slopes, tranquil lakes and grand vistas that you see today – the work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown – but instead one

would have seen vast formal gardens and avenues, parterres and greenhouses, rampart terraces and ornamental ponds. Also lurking underneath the parkland lie the 9th Earl of Northumberland’s (1564 – 1632) monumental stables buried between the lake and house, and the original ice house, dove cote and the banqueting house of Henry VIII. The team has already found signs of the stables belonging to the 6th Duke of Somerset (1662-1748) and are hoping to excavate the site of Henry VIII’s banqueting house.

They are full of flavour and are served with crushed olives on top. Overall the food was excellent quality, each flavour worked well together and I could taste all the ingredients of the dish. The Sunday menu also features roast beef, pork belly, roast aubergine stuffed with vegetables and couscous, and Chef Carlos’ favourite, Ox cheek casserole cooked over four hours with red wine, cinnamon and star anise served with stilton mash and vegetables. Carlos said: “It melts in your mouth with the stilton mash, I also make the mash with the skins still on to keep in the flavour.”

ocated on Henfield’s high street is a late 16th century building, which was once a coaching stop, where postchaises and saddle horses could be hired. Today the Grade II listed building is home to The George Hotel and Restaurant. Newly appointed chef, Carlos Carrizo, is excited to take up the post and make full use of all the ingredients the Sussex countryside has to offer him. Carlos told Fine Sussex: “England has very good meats and vegetables. The countryside is the best place to use them and to share with people how great the food is. I want to make the highest quality pub food using only local ingredients.” Carlos uses local farms to source his ingredients and draws inspiration for his food and the menu from the ingredients available to him. “The food is simple – I don’t put too many ingredients on the plate, sometimes less is more especially when using top quality produce. Because I am from Argentina I have had to re-learn the cuisine and the foods available. The earth here gives us different ingredients every season and sometimes the farms can only send me what they have to work with. The menu here is alive and I change it frequently”, the chef added. For lunch I ordered the roast pork loin served with roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy. Carlos prepares it by opening

David Beaty, head chef at The Fig Tree restaurant in Hurstpierpoint passes on his recipe for jazzing up your tuna steaks this summer - with a perfect marinade and dressing recipe perfect for all those barbecues • • • • • • • •

2 garlic cloves crushed A good splash of olive oil 2 chorizo sausages peeled 1/2 juice of lemon Small bunch of flat leaf parsley Small bunch of chopped chives 100 ml olive oil 3 large courgettes

For the tuna marinade Crush the garlic and chop the chilli and rosemary finely. Then mix with the honey and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. For the chorizo dressing

Grilled tuna steak with aubergine, asparagus and chorizo dressing

Remove the skin from chorizo and cut into even pieces. Add the chorizo and olive oil to a pan and slowly heat up till the oil goes a nice red colour (5-8 minutes). Set aside the pan to cool. Pick the leaves off the parsley and chop with the chives. Pour the chorizo oil into a bowl and whisk in the lemon juice, then add chorizo sausage, parsley and chives.

What you will need

For the tuna

• Tuna steaks (ours come from Just Fish, Hurstpierpoint) • A bunch or two of asparagus • 1 tbsp honey • 1 small chili diced and seeded (leave seeds in if you like it hot) • 1 spring of rosemary

Thinly slice the courgettes length-wise or if preferred with a vegetable peeler. Lay the sliced courgettes on a tray and drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Snap off the woody ends of the asparagus and place them on a drizzled with olive oil tray and season.

Rub the marinade on the tuna steaks and leave for 10 minutes. Meanwhile chargrill the courgettes and asparagus until tender and soft. Set aside once cooked. Now char-grill Tuna steaks to your liking. Serve with courgettes, asparagus, chorizo dressing and nice bottle of wine. To accompany the meal, we recommend the Cloudy Ridge Rosé from Plumpton Estate or red wine such as Pinot Noir or light Rioja (try South Downs Cellars in Hurstpierpoint). Enjoy!

buy&prepare asparagus It’s the perfect time of year for asparagus but there are a few myths about picking and preparing the vegetable that can be dispelled. Here Richard Macadam, general manager at the Angel Hotel and Restaurant in Midhurst, explains how to get it right

A

sparagus is best when grown and picked fresh. Regardless of whether you’re buying thin ‘sprue’ asparagus or extralarge ‘jumbo’ spears, always choose stems that are firm and lush, rather than dry and wrinkly. Avoid any stems that are discoloured, scarred or turning slimy at the tips. If you’re using whole spears, then make sure the buds are tightly furled. If you’re making soup, though, you could also use the cheaper, loose-tipped spears you sometimes find on market stalls.

The less time it takes to get asparagus from the field to the plate, the better it will taste because the sugars in the plant start to turn to starch once it’s picked

cooking time varies according to the thickness of the stems but ranges between three to five minutes. Once it’s cooked, drain and pat dry on kitchen paper. If you’re serving it cold, you’ll get the best flavour if, rather than cooling under the cold tap, you spread the hot asparagus out to cool. Fresh, tender asparagus can be served raw. Use a vegetable peeler to cut thin shavings into a salad and dressing it with a lemon vinaigrette, or serve it whole with aioli for dipping. White asparagus is particularly good raw. Our chefs always love to use local ingredients. In fact, this year’s bumper crop of asparagus is here and heavenly at the Angel Hotel and Restaurant Midhurst. It is supplied locally by Durleighmarsh Farm, a family-run business with a pick your own option and farm shop. They also support local growers and producers.

Highlights include steamed asparagus with free range Southdean farm poached hens’ eggs; a toasted English muffin with hollandaise sauce; chargrilled asparagus, crispy Parma ham, parmesan and balsamic dressing; baked fillet of local Petworth trout with asparagus risotto and rocket salad. To prepare Despite what you may have read or heard, it’s not necessary to buy an asparagus steamer, nor to bind the asparagus into a bundle and cook it upright in a pan. For the best results, wash the stems thoroughly in a sink full of cold water. Then trim the stalks and if the lower part of the stem seems tough when sliced and eaten raw, lightly peel the bottom third of the stem. Drop loose spears into a pan of boiling water and cook until just tender. The

The chefs at The Birch Hotel in Haywards heath are on a mission to provide wholesome and delicious dishes with a seasonal and local infusion. Catherine Ross went for dinner and discovered a place with a small menu that’s big on taste

f you’re looking for a lovely evening out in Mid Sussex, look no further than the Courtyard Restaurant at the Birch Hotel in Haywards Heath. The light, airy restaurant has been lovingly refurbished and offers a light, bright space for dining with friends or business associates with cosy corners for romantic nights out. Head chef Gary Lloyd and his second in command, Anthony Bright, have put together a delicious menu using local, seasonal ingredients and creating dishes that people want to eat. “We’re not interested in fashionable food that will win Michelin Stars, instead, we’re concentrating on good, honest, delicious food that people will be glad they came out for”, said Gary. The meat and vegetables on offer come through Brighton-based suppliers and the beef is from Butterbox Farm at Scaynes Hill, duck eggs come from Cowfold and British asparagus has been sourced from Godalming. four starters, six main courses and four desserts. It has clearly been carefully considered to offer something to suit all tastes. Starters include homemade soup of the day, asparagus with poached duck egg, prawn and crab mousse and goat’s cheese wrapped in filo pastry.

Then de-mould and turn upside down onto a non-stick tray. Place into a pre-heated oven at 180°C for 8 minutes. Serve immediately.

What you will need • 6 180ml ramekin dishes • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 30g mature Goodwood Charlton cheese, finely grated • 20g caramelised walnuts, finely grated • 30g unsalted butter • 30g plain flour • 150g whole Goodwood milk • 125g mature Goodwood Charlton cheese, grated • 1 tsp English mustard • Salt & pepper • 300g frozen, then defrosted egg whites • 1 tsp cream of tartar • 5g salt

What you need to do Brush the soufflé dishes with butter. Line with the cheese and walnuts mix then chill. Make a roux with the butter and flour, add the milk in stages, whisking continuously. Then mix in the cheese, mustard and adjust the seasoning. Whilst the cheese mixture is still warm whisk the egg whites, cream of tartar and salt until soft peaks form. Beat 1/3 into the cheese mixture, then fold in another 1/3 and then fold in the rest. Spoon the soufflé mixture into the dishes. Smooth the top with a palette knife. Run your thumb around the edge of the dish to enable an even rise. Bake in a bain-marie at 180°C for 14 minutes.

The lifestyle store in Arundel is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Owners Andrew and Holly Heggadon tell James Hood how they’ve spent a decade meeting the demands of their customers - and that now is the time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future (after a big old party that is)

I

t’s been 10 years since Sparks Yard in Arundel opened its doors to the public. And such an achievement is no small feat given that for the past four years the country has suffered through a severe economic downturn. So what’s the secret? Maybe it’s the refreshingly contemporary home accessories mixed with lovely little gifts, or the novel concept of having a fantastic coffee and cake shop within a homeware store. Perhaps it’s the inspiration it provides everyone who goes in to make their own home a little better, or the ever-changing stock. In reality, it’s hard to pinpoint something that makes Sparks Yard so great but one thing is clear - owners Holly and Andrew Heggadon remain as passionate today as they did at the very start.

We want to say a big thank you to our customers. Some have been coming in since day one. The support has been overwhelming and so has the response to our 10th anniversary The concept behind the shop, which is spread over two floors, was the brainwave of Holly, who took a leap of faith creating a destination store for the people of Arundel and beyond. Within nine months, the shop expanded, taking over the floor above as well as working its way into different rooms and corners of the building. Soon after, Andrew left a career in London to join the team. “We work really well together, which is partly why Sparks Yard has been so successful”, Holly

told Fine Sussex. “I have lots of bright ideas and Andy’s pragmatic - he’s a doer. We’ve also had the support of an excellent team of people as well as very supportive parents! We haven’t achieved this alone. Even our two-year-old son is chief cookie sampler.” The couple know they have a lot to thank their customers for, too, adding: “We want to say a big thank you to our customers. Some have been coming in since day one. The support has been overwhelming and so has the response to our 10th anniversary. We’ve become an integral part of Arundel’s community and that’s fantastic”, Andrew added.

But their customers have also come in to the shop for good reason - Andrew and Holly have been careful to ensure their ranges are current, contemporary and meet the demands of today’s shoppers. Stock is continually reviewed and sourced and seasonal goods are also brought in throughout the year. “Part of the reason we introduced the coffee shop was because it felt like there was a market for somewhere to stop and have a coffee while you shop. It makes things nice and easy. We introduced milkshakes and opened a patio space so families can come together. And we introduced our own loyalty scheme. I think it’s that kind of foresight and thought that has gone into Sparks Yard that has helped us be successful for this long. We care about what we are offering people 24/7. Every small detail is considered so that those who shop in Sparks Yard are inspired”, Holly said. There has also been a small addition to the Sparks Yard family, with the opening of RSVP - a miniature version of the store near the main road leading into Arundel. Their customers can find small gifts and stationery, which Holly and Andy positioned in such a place

But marking the 10th anniversary has motivated Andrew and Holly to look forward to the future while also celebrating their success. Andrew said: “It’s an incredible achievement and looking at the shop today gives us immense satisfaction. We live and breath the store. It’s our life. This is where our family is, and I include our brilliant staff in that. But in a way, this is more about us moving forward. We’re so grateful for the support over the last decade. And now it’s time for us to look at how we can improve, grow and be here for the next 10 years.

Sparks Yard’s 10th anniversary was celebrated at a recent party held in-store, where customers were invited to tea and cake and listen to the jazz band in the garden. Speaking about the event Andrew told us: “It felt like a celebration. There were families here enjoying themselves. Worryingly, there were even 10-year-old children who we remember being born, making us feel very old! Everyone had a great time and most importantly, it was the perfect way to express our gratitude.”

why art matters Jennifer Orgill believes Art has a place in your children’s school curriculum. Here the education expert explains ways you can incorporate the lessons into your home life and tells us why it can be invaluable for developing bright young minds

rt is more than a mere extra subject. It is not just a fun activity that has no specific skills or objectives. Art and Design as a subject has significant value in primary education and throughout an individual’s life. It can develop and enhance human aptitudes, abilities and skills. Art encourages us to be creative and imaginative. It can be a means of self expression and develop our perception of the world. Through Art we develop hand eye co-ordination and spatial awareness as well as our understanding of colour, tone, composition and size. Art helps us to develop the ability to describe and analyse what we can see and our feelings. It helps to form and support our viewpoints. In addition, art develops cultural enquiry and awareness, enabling us to engage visually in our world and to recognise non-linguistic signs. Think, for example, of many of the signs we recognise around the world, such as flags or signals when crossing the road.

As a means of communicating our ideas, thoughts and emotions art is effective. This was acknowledged by Napoleon Bonaparte’s in his phrase - “A picture paints a thousand words.” Art lessons in school encourage your child to explore and develop their ideas and allow them to investigate and produce art as well as evaluate their end products. They will gain a knowledge and understanding of techniques, in addition to learning about artists and designers both past and present. Over their primary education they will have opportunities to develop their skills and learn new techniques in drawing, painting, collage, 3D modelling, printing, textiles and communicating ideas. Art and Design can be used to support learning in most subjects e.g. the teaching of shape in maths, a source of evidence in history, encouraging the development of vocabulary in learning a language, developing global awareness,

communicating information in science through the creation of posters and expert boards, using graphics in ICT, etc. At home, you can encourage your child in making their own art projects. You do not have to be artistic or have specific skills yourself. You can be creative with them or leave them to it. Vincent Van Gogh stated: “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” Remember that any piece of art is unique and therefore cannot be wrong! The art projects you do at home do not need to have a specific aim; they can be short or long; they can be completely open ended. It is the process of exploring and experimenting that is important. Resist the temptation of ‘leading’ your child, instead be a ‘guide on the side’. However, some children will want to watch and observe you use the materials before trying them for themselves. If your child should ask you, ‘do you like it?’ answer them with the question ‘do you like it? You are the artist.’ Try to give compliments rather than judgments, for example. “Look at all the colours of the rainbow you used” rather than “pretty colours.” Also consider that art can break the boundaries; flowers do not have to be red and leaves do not have to be green. You can buy materials for art in high street stores - (bargain shops can be a great resource). If you are buying paint, you can make all colours with the primary colours (red, yellow and blue) and black and white which can be used to darken or lighten colours. Mixing their own colours is a great way for a child to learn about colour theory and tones. You may find the following useful: Red + yellow = orange Blue + yellow = green Blue + red = purple Red + yellow + blue = brown Blue + yellow + white = turquoise Blue + red + white = mauve Combine yellow or brown paint with red and white to create skin tones. There are also recipes (many online) to make your own modelling dough, which is cheaper than buying ready-made brands. You can also use magazines,

wrapping paper, paper packaging and scraps of materials for collage projects, or up-cycle cereal or other boxes to make 3D sculptures. Do not worry about the mess - children are washable! Put a large plastic cloth (plastic table cloths are good for this) underneath the area they are working in; use a tray for smaller projects or complete the art project in the bath. All of these can be easily cleaned. Alternatively set up the activity in the garden. You may also find it useful to have storage containers for your art materials and to encourage your child to help to tidy up with you. If you are outdoors use materials in the environment to create art. Encourage your child to record their environmental art by photographing it. After all, photography is another form of art and some children enjoying taking photos and editing them. Throughout towns and villages in Sussex and the UK, there are public pieces of art, art galleries and museums that can be visited for free. Discuss these with your child, explaining your viewpoint and thoughts and encouraging your child to do the same.

t Farlington School, outside Horsham, we are extremely proud of our Art department. Housed in two studios, we provide a stimulating, dynamic environment which showcases our students’ outstanding and impressive artwork. Some students come from overseas specifically to study art here. Georgie Hamp and Emma Christopherson, both 17, are in their final year of studying Art and Design A-level. With a small class, they have been guaranteed individual guidance and instruction. The girls have been introduced to a wide variety of media from traditional painting to collage, mono prints and sculpture.

We are very proud of Georgie and Emma’s work but also how they encourage and inspire the younger girls Emma developed an interest in the works of Jenny Saville and Lucian Freud, which fed into her traditional painting in oils as she explored more experimental composition. She told Fine Sussex: “My special study area was ‘the figure’ and I am most proud of the traditional figure paintings I completed. The

teachers encouraged me to use different techniques, to experiment, so that I could find my own personal style. I have seen a real progression from my GCSE work and my confidence has grown. I particularly enjoyed the trips to the National Portrait Gallery and the Lucien Freud exhibition to see the artworks first-hand which also fed into my study of History of Art.” Georgie, who achieved 100% for her AS coursework last year, focused on structure and explored urban landscape and linear forms. “I studied the works of George Heidweiller which led to the structural portraits I enjoyed making. The art department is one of the key reasons I chose to stay and study at Farlington in the 6th Form. The atmosphere is exciting, relaxed and we are encouraged to be innovative and to experiment”, she said. Art department often relates to or enjoys a connection with other subject areas.

The best thing about teaching Art is that it gives me the opportunity on a daily basis to share my passion for the subject. I have the freedom to interpret projects in a variety of ways that keeps me learning, keeps my ideas fresh and creates a buzzing department.

Do you think Art is as important as core subjects like Maths and English?

What are the benefits of learning Art?

As someone who interprets the world through a creative eye, I think that Art is essential. This is because not only is it fun, but in particular it encourages critical thinking, analysis and how to approach a topic with an open mind.

Learning about Art does not have to be simplistic. The subject can be as broad as the children wish and learning techniques is the easy part. The challenge and joy come from interpreting ideas, looking at the world with an open mind, noticing detail and beauty, and capturing how you might feel about these things.

How many hours are dedicated to Art each week at your school? Years 3 to 8 have time tabled lessons each week. In addition some children opt for Art during activity time. Why is it important for pupils to be creative? Creativity is a core skill required for all forms of problem solving and investigation - visual or otherwise.

Could you explain the different elements of the Art curriculum (theory, practical, museum visits etc.) The Art curriculum comprises of observational drawing, photography and research, analysis of artists’ works and genres, experimentation with a variety of media and techniques - including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture. Burgess Hill School for Girls has a wide-ranging Art syllabus. As Head of Art, Monica Carruthers points out, the subject can lead to travel, better grades and improved self esteem

rt is highly regarded at Burgess Hill School for Girls and has an important role in the educational experience of all our pupils. We believe the study of Art not only provides imaginative activity to produce outcomes that are original and of value in themselves, but studying Art affords a balance to other areas of the curriculum. We find that when students find their creative strengths within the subject, it can have an enormous impact on self-esteem and on overall academic achievement. A recent move for the Art Department has provided us with extensive new facilities. We have a dedicated exhibition area to showcase students’ work, two busy art studios, a subject-specific library and a kiln area. We are able to offer our large dual level studio exclusively for the use of our Sixth Form artists. In this studio, each student has their own work area where they can leave work in progress and put up displays of visual stimuli and inspiration, mirroring the experience and environment found in the studios of Art colleges and universities. There has always been a high take-up of Art for both GCSE and A level and our 2012 examination results, where 100 per cent of Art students were awarded A* to C grades, reflect the extraordinary standards the girls achieve. Many of our Sixth Form Art students have gone on to study Art Foundation courses or similar

courses at University such as Art History, Architecture, Fashion and Museum Studies. The Art department encourages visual development within the classroom and through trips to galleries and visits from organisations such as the Royal Academy, which offers Life Drawing workshops for our older students. In March we led a trip to Rome and Sorrento to view an extensive range of Artwork. We also have thriving Art and Photography clubs and pupils are encouraged to take part in national and local Art and Photography competitions, with notable success being achieved in both areas. As valued members of the school community, our students’ artwork is used for the front covers of school publications; from the school diary to the annual magazine. Students’ artwork is also used to support charities, with girls designing Christmas cards and taking part in charity painting competitions in school. Our Sixth Form artists have also produced and sold paintings specifically for charity. Our charitable donations were increased notably last summer when, after hearing many comments that people would love to buy the girls’ artwork, the school held an Art Auction, which was so successful we hope this will become a bi-annual event. Paul Deller from Christ’s Hospital talks about how he teaches Art and why unlocking a pupil’s imagination is the key to success in the subject and in life What do you like most about teaching art? Contemplating images and objects every day, turning what we imagine into reality. This can appear indulgent but, essentially, I still think that making art is an important thing to do. I enjoy the freedom I feel, the environment I work in and the relationships that I build with students and staff, principally through the filter of art.

What are the benefits of learning art? It is a fundamental way of understanding the world as art works in a multiplicity of ways – intellectually, skilfully and emotionally. Art has to have meaning and it addresses the key issues: life and death, religion, relationships. Who we are, really.

This criteria determines much of what we

do but we still have a lateral approach and, for example, all the senior courses are initiated by their own versions of Brian Eno’s ‘Oblique Strategies’. We also like to enhance their learning with gallery visits, a New York trip, photo competitions and artist’s lectures and exhibitions – most recently Martin Parr.

Do you think art is as important as core subjects like Maths and English? Of course. Although, I think that I spend more time working with students analysing how they actually think in the hope that they will make ‘things’ that are true. If they can be honest about what they feel, the possibilities are far greater and happiness more likely.

Who is your favourite artist? This changes every week because I have to see the best in all art. This week though, it would be a tossup between a Roger Ballen photo, a Cy Twombly sculpture, a Phillip Guston painting, a Brassai photo or a piece of Japanese Outsider Art. y daughter came home from school yesterday carrying a Japanese carp kite and her violin. She was wearing a giant smile, had sand in her shoes and leaves in her hair and was full of the joys of being four and exploring the wonders of the world with all her senses. These are precious times and as parents we value every single piece of art and every mark they make as they take their first steps in formal education. As an art teacher at the same preparatory school, I try to hold onto that same sense of wonder for my, slightly older, students. Through a creative and exciting approach, students are able to experience the excitement of the visual world and high levels of personal success. I firmly believe that every child

As students grow up through the school, there are opportunities to connect with the community through participation in local art initiatives. Currently Year 7 students have work on display in the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne. In the final year, students can prepare for a scholarship; and in the last two years have been awarded art scholarships to Brighton, Lancing, and Hurstpierpoint Colleges. start with art Meet the bright young pupils at Great Ballard school who are using their creativity to produce outstanding art

G

reat Ballard is a small preparatory school near Chichester in the South Downs National Park with a thriving Art department. All pupils are encouraged to draw from observation and this is the basis for the large, bold and bright coloured canvases that are now displayed around the school. Pupils use our extensive grounds for inspiration, take photographs and research in the IT suite to create some fabulous work. Pupils showing a flair and love for the subject are invited to join the ‘Excellence Group’, enabling them to work in smaller groups with more individual help on their portfolios. Each student selects a topic to research in a wide range of materials and style in both two and three dimensions. Over the years, we have had many successful students who have produced portfolios of about thirty pieces of work to GCSE A* standard even though they are only 13 years old and have received scholarships to their chosen senior schools. This year, three students received art scholarships: Virginia and Amelia to Hurstpierpoint College, Grace to Brighton College. Rupert used art as a major part of his Ken Sherwood award to Lancing College. Grace chose cows for her topic. 18 months ago she started drawing small carefully observed cows. As her confidence grew, she worked on larger projects in a bolder style exaggerating the intensity of the colours, which resulted in a masterpiece that a

number of parents wanted to buy (but she could not be persuaded to part with!)

Over the years, we have had many successful students who have produced portfolios of about thirty pieces of work to GCSE A* standard Amelia who has always enjoyed Bovril has created a portfolio based on its bold label and thick dark consistency. This varied portfolio includes a large slice of granary bread smothered with Bovril made from MDF, Polyfilla and sand as well as images of Bovril jars created by dripping and smearing paint. Rupert has taken close up photos of flowers in his garden and then created some fabulous canvases using four inch decorator brushes and oil sticks and has developed a decorative mark making style all of his own exploring the textures of plants. Virginia chose to research Carousels. Images of galloping horses were cut out of books or painted on glass and her triptych of horses decorated in their finery shows off her love of detail, antiquity and sensitive handling paint. celebrating 150 years of educating

A time capsule to be buried at the end of June will mark the 150th anniversary of St Leonards-Mayfield School. Find out why it’s such a special place that’s steeped in history

C

elebrating a 150th anniversary is no mean feat and clearly requires something extra special to mark the occasion. St Leonards-Mayfield School in East Sussex has decided that the perfect way to mark such a grand event is by launching a time capsule, and will be doing just that on 22 June in order to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary year. The time capsule will capture the essence of life at the independent Catholic girls’ school in 2013, and will be buried in the foyer of the school’s newly built Sixth Form Centre, where it will remain sealed until the school’s bicentenary in 2063. Items being placed inside the capsule include a school uniform, a prospectus, copies of current newspapers and magazines, and letters from old girls and students, with the hope that the today’s students will attend the opening of the capsule in 2063 to re-read their personal messages. Miss Antonia Beary, headmistress at the school said: “We want the contents of the time capsule to be inclusive and reflect our extended school community.

That’s why we are placing a picture of every current student inside, as well as their individual memoirs. We also have contributions from generations of former pupils. We hope that each of the girls will be able to return to the school in 50 years’ time when the capsule is opened. I hope it will provide a timely reminder of life as a school girl, and doubtless a few laughs as well! The capsule is also a wonderful way for future generations to have a true picture of what life was like at Mayfield in 2013.” Also included with the photographs of students, and items from each department in the school (from chemistry to ceramics), will be pictures from the school’s history. Amongst these are images of lessons taught at the school fifty years previously, during the 1960s. They reflect life then, with Society of the Holy Child Jesus nuns teaching students cookery, science and textiles. Also featured are photos of gym classes, examinations and private study, offering a glimpse of the school’s rich history. The school was founded in 1863 when Mother

Cornelia Connolly and a group of girls from St Leonards in East Sussex enjoyed a picnic in the grounds of The Old Palace in Mayfield, leading to the restoration of the medieval ruin and the establishment of St Leonards-Mayfield School. The time capsule will be sealed at a special ceremony on Saturday 22 June by Headmistress Miss Beary, Head girl Catriona Franck and the Chairman of the School’s Board of Governors, Nicholas Bagshawe. It will be buried in the ground floor at the new Sixth Form Centre, which will formally open in September and will provide excellent facilities for Year 12 and 13 students. Other celebrations to mark the school’s 150th anniversary have included a reunion picnic for former students, a series of special lectures with high profile speakers and a heritage open day for the general public, due to take place on Sunday 15 September. Benjamin Coren talks to Jack Dunckley from Henfield who has not only debuted his own garden at the prestigious show in London – he’s taken home Silver

wenty-year-old Jack Dunckley from Henfield has won a SilverGilt Flora Award at Chelsea Flower Show after entering his garden, ‘Juxtaposition’ into the Fresh Garden category. This is the first time the young designer has entered a garden into the prestigious show. The garden explores contrast between different regions, one half of it filled with lush, tropical, large leafed plants and the other half representing the dry, arid regions of the desert. Jack said: “It’s inspired by a garden I had entered at Hampton Court back in 2009. The textures of the foliage are so important as well as the size of the plants used. The design is very long and thin and people will experience the garden by walking around it. In previous years Jack has attended the show as a trade stand and won a certificate of merit for his stand. “It feels fantastic to have a garden this year, I feel like I’m part of the team instead of looking in. It’s taken me three years to get to Chelsea and after two applications, I think it’s third time lucky.” Some of the plants Jack has made use of include the tropical Phoenix roebelenii, Alocasia calidora, and the Yucca rostrata. “I had a great opportunity to design for this space. The challenge was trying to create a wow factor garden for such a small space, so it was about big planting,

although you have to be careful not to have too much, which is why I divided the space. I always think less is more.”

It feels fantastic to have a garden this year, I feel like I’m part of the team instead of looking in. It’s taken me three years to get to Chelsea and after two applications, I think it’s third time lucky Jack runs his own six-acre nursery just outside of Henfield called Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery and is building up an impressive list of clients for his garden design services. Jack’s garden is supported by the horticultural charity Perennial. His garden reflects the work the charity do supporting horticulturalists showing the lush side showing how people can flourish and the arid side representing the hardships people face in life. ust because it’s outside doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay attention to the design of your garden or exterior space. Some form of coherence between your interior space and your outside space adds continuity to a scheme as well as making the area more appealing and inviting. This doesn’t mean we have to use green. Pick up the accent colour from the room immediately leading out to your garden or patio, and use it outside. Whether it is the red in your sofa cushions, which can be shown in pots on the patio, or the blue from the curtains in your lounge which will complement the blue in cushions on the patio furniture. To start with, look at the items used for your interiors - carry this theme – lighting, colours and materials through to your outdoor space. There is a huge range of garden products that are just as stylish as interior products, from fabulous colourful weatherproof fabrics to stylish garden furniture and modern lighting and exciting accessories. One of the most important aspects of garden spaces is the seating – somewhere we can just relax, read or even enjoy a meal in the good old outdoors. Garden furniture needs to work in harmony with your garden. Plastic chairs will look out of place in a traditional cottage garden, just as wrought iron furniture will not work with a modern city garden. Another consideration is size. A small garden with a small patio will be eaten up by a large six seater table and chairs, and the large shed in which you house it during the winter months will all but take it over. There are plenty of different styles of garden furniture from plastic, which is the

cheapest to wooden, to metal to stone. Plastic furniture is usually stackable, and can be left out in all weathers. Wooden furniture is very popular. It does however require a little maintenance and can be very heavy. There is an enormous range of metal furniture, which is both modern and traditional. Stone furniture is available, but obviously more expensive and very heavy. We were recently asked to design a courtyard area for a town house in Arundel. The space was very small and housed a large hot tub. To bring a bit of fun into the courtyard, we bought lovely modern egg-shaped lights, which are battery operated rechargeable lights that change colour and can even float in water. We added cushions made from a waterproof fabric to the existing ratten furniture, and some tall zinc planters with lovely exotic, woody, purple Cordylines. To finish it off we hung a large metal garden clock and gothic style garden mirror on the wall – an outside space that has the feel of the inside. We turned an unloved area into a great outside living area – fabulous for relaxing in the hot tub with your favourite tipple in hand. Read more about hot tubs on page 110. Here in Sussex, land is a plenty. So it’s no surprise many people choose to build rather than buy their own property. Simon Lewis from construction company Chiverton answers your questions on designing and developing your dream home

I’m thinking of building my own home rather than buying one. What should I do first? Your first port of call should be an estate agent or, better still, a property search company who knows the local property market in detail – what is currently for sale and what may be available ‘off market’. They will also have made initial enquiries with the local planning authority and will have some idea of the development potential of the house/plot.

Can I build a home anywhere that there is available land? Before committing to a land or property purchase, put some serous time aside to investigate and interview reputable local architects. Alternatively there are a number of specialised planning consultants that can advise on the possibilities for a given site and manage the process of obtaining the necessary consents. Planning laws can be very restricting particularly when it comes to enlarging an existing home and replacing or building on a brown or green field site. There are also an increasing number of environmental issues to consider, as well as the provision of utilities and services to a new site. Expert advice at this stage is critical.

What is the planning/building application process and will Chiverton handle that for me? The actual design of a project is typically carried out by your nominated architect. Your architect is most qualified to take his or her design through the planning process as well building regulations approval. The architect will typically remain involved throughout the construction process. Alternatively, the entire process can be managed by Chiverton as what we call a ‘turn-key’ design and build package. This is when we employ our own professional team and provide a complete one-stop-shop service.

Can I choose the style of home I want or even show you a photo? The design of the house will be based on a client’s desires and wishes – including photos of their influences is helpful if that is the easiest means of getting their requirements across. These will generally be enhanced by the architect. You may even have employed them for their own style. Bear in mind that you might be restricted by the local authority. Your local council and/or parish councils influence will vary depending on the location of the site and its proximity to other dwellings, roads, conservation areas etc.

The design of the house will be based on a client’s desires and wishes. Including photos of their influences is helpful if that is the easiest means of getting their requirements across How long does the entire process usually take? Once the land is purchased, the duration of the design process is dictated by the resources of the architect and the assertiveness of the client. The planners will also be consulted during the design stage and this process will typically take a few months rather than a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the design. It is usually wise to wait until planning permission is confirmed (up to 12 weeks) before committing to more costs in the form of building regulations applications, structural calculations and the finalising of detailed specifications. This process can also take many weeks. Once all consents are obtained and working drawings and specifications produced, tenders can be sought from specialist builders for the work. This lengthy process can be bypassed, should you choose to negotiate with a preferred builder.

Can you organise or recommend architects and interior designers? We have worked with numerous architects and interior designers over many decades and can always provide recommendations depending on your location, your budget and general requirements. At the end of the day, you will need to ensure that you chose a professional you are likely to get along with on a personal level for what can be a long and stressful period of time.

How much is it going to set me back? Architects fees vary, depending on the size and reputation of the practice, and to a greater degree by the level of their involvement in the construction phase, the level of complexity and detailing required and the expected interaction and support offered to the client. In addition to architects fees you may need to appoint a quantity surveyor and structural engineer, however larger or more complex projects may require a planning consultant, landscape architect, mechanical and electrical engineer and interior designer. Fees are normally charged on a percentage of the projected value of the build, although some may provide a fixed fee, and it is not unusual to expect fees to be around 15 per cent of the construction cost. In addition to the design consultant’s fees there are planning and building control fees to pay, and in some cased ecology assessments and reports. Construction costs are determined by the size, specification and complexity of the project with high quality homes costing from around £2,000 per m2. New homes are zero rated for VAT (consultants fees are not) whereas (with a few exceptions) all forms of extension and alterations are subject to 20 per cent tax. Bridget James not only has to deal with her own ‘life changes’ but those of her teenagers. In this month’s column she talks about life beginning at 50, turning into her mother and texting

I

’ve often thought of the number of times Mother Nature can have a little joke at our expense. Just that little quirk in our biological development that can send us hurtling in the direction of serious therapy. The fact that our children are teetering on the brink of adolescence just as we girls are most likely staring down the chasm to middle age is one of those times. Now I know all the statements like “50 is the new 40” and “life begins at...” and all that jazz but I don’t totally buy into it all of the time. I would be fibbing if I didn’t admit that I don’t like the ageing process. I don’t like the fact that my skin doesn’t spring back into place after rigorous usage of facial cleansing wipes, or that I am dangerously near to having to use my specs to apply what little make up I can muster, or that (horrors of horrors) I can now walk into town with my daughter and remain completely invisible to any male unless they either, want to wash my car for money, or hand me a copy of the Big Issue. I still have that shred of vanity and yes it matters!

I don’t seem to be able to respond to my off springs’ volatile mood swings with that same degree of calm, probably because my own aren’t far behind them. We seem to be mirroring each other in the over the top reaction stakes. I think the most alarming thing is the realisation that I may in little ways be turning into my mother and they are picking up on it. So any remark such as “You sound just like Granma” strikes an icy chord. It’s not

that I’m not proud of my mother but I can still remember the things that used to really irritate me about her when I was a teenager and now I seem to be replicating them. I can sense the frustration in my daughter as it takes me increasingly longer to round up the weekly shop as I have to double check I’ve got everything on the list and that I haven’t left without my credit card. Travelling is a nightmare as they notice that I check I’ve got the passports and tickets at least fifty times before leaving the house. And the straw that breaks the adolescent camel’s back is the fact that it takes me so long to reply to texts. It drives them mad and unfortunately, as a psychotherapist, I can understand that as not only am I aware of the theory behind it but I listen to the same existentialist anxieties in my clients. So there’s no escape from this cruel reality that both the kids and I are experiencing life changes at the same time - but not necessarily from the same crib sheet. In an effort to regroup and reinstate some stability into this emotional cauldron I decided to treat them to Sunday lunch out recently. Before we even left the house the dialogue flung in my direction went something like this...“Why are you wearing those trousers... you look like a dance teacher.” “Do you know some of those little grey hairs are creeping back into your fringe again...” “Why do you take so long to eat?” Your self esteem has to pretty iron clad to take that and still think “50 is the new 40”!

Colorectal consultant at the Chichester Nuffield, Guy Harris, explains what his job involves and talks us through the symptoms you should look out for to ensure your insides are in good health with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, hernias, haemorrhoids and fissures. It can range from major abdominal surgery to simple advice for common minor ailments.

Do you also offer nonsurgical treatment for problems or symptoms relating to the abdomen? Yes. I see many patients to whom I prescribe medication or simply examine without the need for surgery. I also carry out diagnostic procedures such as a colonoscopy or endoscopy of the stomach.

Could you explain which part of the body ‘colorectal’ refers to? Colorectal surgery concerns treatment of disorders of the large bowel - the colon, rectum and anus. Along with the small intestine this makes up most of the digestive tract and is contained within the abdomen.

How long have you been working at the Chichester Nuffield? I have been a consultant here for 10 years. I originally went to Medical School at St George’s London and trained at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester. I also spent two years completing fellowships in bowel cancer surgery and laparoscopic surgery in the United States and Australia.

What does your role involve? I work at the Nuffield Hospital, Chichester, and a typical day for me involves seeing patients and diagnosing general colorectal problems as well as performing surgery for abdominal disease. I treat patients

Do you think many patients are embarrassed to discuss symptoms relating to the bowels or colon? There is a bit of embarrassment when talking about this particular area of the body. But there needn’t be. It’s very important that people see a doctor if they are experiencing any unusual symptoms. As with many illnesses or diseases, early diagnoses and screening is crucial. With cancer for example, if we spot it early, there are ways we can treat it that will cure the condition. But waiting too long can cause serious problems further down the line.

What are the symptoms people should look out for if they have problems with their colon, bowel or abdomen generally? There are two different categories I would place symptoms into. The first being acute cases which are more sudden and are often classed as an emergency. These symptoms usually include severe pain, fever and nausea. In the patients that I see this is often caused by appendicitis or a perforated

ulcer and are treated immediately. The second category is made up of chronic illness that is not necessarily considered as an emergency. Generally speaking, signs for these cases include bleeding from the colon when going to the loo as well as a significant change in bowel habits. Like many health issues, if symptoms persist for a length of time, people must see a doctor. It’s the same for anus and bowel health. Serious issues will often be present if weight loss or abdominal pain has occurred.

Do you need to see a GP to get referred to a colorectal consultant? The first point of contact is usually with your GP. But you can make an appointment directly at the Nuffield Hospital.

Are there any lifestyle factors that affect the health of a person’s colon, bowels or abdomen? When it comes to bowel cancer, we’ve seen a direct correlation between a reduced risk of developing the disease with living a healthy lifestyle. High levels of physical activity combined with a healthy diet have proven to be an excellent way to prevent or reduce the chances of getting the cancer. Avoiding large amounts of red meats and processed foods is also advisable. With regard to haemorrhoids or more minor anal/rectal problems, a balanced diet that includes plenty of fibre is helpful.
