CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOWS & DOORS FOR YOUR HOME
W
alk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively, whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong it is blindingly obvious – but when they have been chosen well, or the original windows and doors preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. So what should you consider when investing in new Timber Windows? For many homeowners, restoring the integrity of the original structure is paramount. When choosing windows and doors to faithfully replicate the appearance of the building in its heyday it is essential to study the size of the window sections, ensuring that they match the proportions of the original frames as closely as possible. Deep bottom rails, slim meeting styles and fine glazing bars are important details. In casement windows non-opening elements should be glazed with dummy sashes to ensure balanced sightlines. The amount of glass area is important and overly bulky sections should be avoided. The Timber WIndows range provides great dimensional flexibility and a wide range of choices to ensure traditional aesthetics are preserved, whilst providing 21st century levels of comfort, security and performance. Many options also exist to really break down the boundaries between the house and outdoor space, letting light flood in, such as the addition of a folding sliding door or a smooth running patio door. Time was when every window frame in sight was white. Today the choice of factory applied colours and finishes available adds a level of choice our predecessors would envy. With natural timber finishes, subtle shades of cream, green, blue and grey, as well as elegant black, the Timber Windows colour palette can help to highlight or to blend in. Multiple colours are also possible, with the option to finish the insides of your windows and doors differently from the outsides. We can also colour match to leading, quality paint brands to complement your interior colour scheme. Balancing the style, colour and choice of windows and doors appropriately all adds up to what our trans-Atlantic cousins call 'curb appeal' - a pleasing visual aspect for neighbours, passers-by and even future purchasers. This is the art and hallmark of a job well done. Timber Windows would very much welcome the opportunity to work with you, enabling you to enhance the value and beauty of your home through the addition of well-chosen timber windows and doors. To take the first steps simply visit our website, call us direct or pop into our showroom.

the making of ROARING FIRES
The inspiration behind this issue has been getting cosy. We all love summer, but there is something about golden brown leaves, the smell of bonfires, roaring fires and cashmere jumpers that makes saying goodbye to highs of 28 degrees that little bit easier. So with battening down the hatches, baking a few gingerbread men and grabbing a blanket in mind, we’ve put together 100-odd pages of things to help you warm up. Everything you’ve always wanted to know about whisky, fireplaces and fashion for autumn/winter are just the tip of the iceberg (sorry to revert you back to the thought of anything freezing). You’ll also find a
ARUN MEDIA LTD
selection of beautiful bathtubs and tips from an expert on keeping your skin’s summer glow throughout the cold spell. Of course, it wouldn’t be an issue of Fine Sussex without us presenting some of the most luxurious and desirable products on the market. So you’ll also find Graff diamonds, the new Mercedes S-Class and Montblanc inside. Officially, though, this is one of our two annual ‘Weddings’ issues. And rather than simply publishing page after page of advertising from wedding-related suppliers, our aim here is to provide bride and groomsto-be with useful, entertaining and often calming features to make planning the big day a little easier. We lead with advice on choosing the dress - a big deal, I’m told.

A NEW START for TH Baker Brighton
S Celebrated jeweller T H Baker continues to offer customers nationwide the best in prestigious watches and jewellery, with the official opening of its relocated Brighton store
Founded in 1888 by Thomas Henry Baker, the family business is currently in its 125th year
S
ituated at its new premises at 63 Churchill Square, the new T H Baker store opened its doors to customers in August. The new store location occupies 2,000 square foot and visitors continue to be assisted by a team of knowledgeable staff, headed by store manager Zoe Evans. The new store also helped to create several new jobs. T H Baker Brighton boasts specialist boutiques dedicated to names such as TAG Heuer and Breitling as well as Pandora, Links of London, Gucci and Thomas Sabo - offering customers the ultimate one-stop experience for all fashion accessory requirements. These special boutique areas are complemented by the store’s range of other best-selling jewellery brands and some of the most renowned timepieces on the market today. The opening weekend was a great success according to manager Zoe Evans, who told Fine Sussex: “It was a great start for a new store that we think offers our customers, old and new, a great shopping experience.” An official launch event in support of the opening is soon to follow.
24 | FINE SUSSEX
Following the store’s debut weekend, director Phillip Higgs added: “It is with great delight that our new store in Churchill Square is now officially open for business. The opening weekend was a fantastic success and far exceeded our expectations. I must say a special thank you to all our staff and customers who came to celebrate the opening with us and made it such a memorable day. We are very much looking forward to a long and prosperous future in Brighton.” Founded in 1888 by Thomas Henry Baker, the family business is currently in its 125th year of business and continues to welcome new customers in experiencing quality, choice and value for over a century. Although T H Baker Brighton is part of the company’s network of Southern stores, the past 10 years has seen the business expand into Worcestershire, Shropshire and the West Midlands, with plans for more stores underway. COUNTING ON
THE NEW GOVERNOR S
Greg Mahon, from investment management firm Rathbones, examines the changes and plans made by the man who’s taken the reins at the Bank of England and comments on his new approach to managing interest rates
S
Mark Carney, the new governor of the Bank of England (BoE), recently announced the organisation’s new approach to managing the economy. Having been invited by George Osborne to adopt new monetary policy tools to stimulate growth in March, there had been widespread speculation about which measure Mr Carney would choose. At the Bank of Canada, he was one of the first central bankers to use ‘forward guidance’ to instil confidence. This involves giving clear guidance to investors, businesses and consumers on the direction and likely timing of changes in interest rates. Previously, central bankers spoke with Zen-like restraint about future policy in case speculation trapped them. However, since Mr Carney used forward guidance successfully in Canada in 2009/10, when he said that rates would remain at very low levels for at least 15 months, it has been adopted by the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. Like the Federal Reserve, the BoE has chosen to adopt forward guidance on unemployment. Mr Carney signalled that it will not consider raising base rates from their record low of 0.5 per cent until unemployment falls to seven per cent. BoE forecasts indicate that the target will not be reached until 2016. However, Mr Carney’s big announcement wasn’t as well received as he might have wished. The stock market fell and sterling strengthened, suggesting that investors aren’t convinced by his guidance. This is because of the caveats that Mr Carney also outlined: the BoE will only leave rates unchanged if any of its three ‘knock-out’ conditions aren’t breached. Irrespective of its guidance, the BoE will consider raising rates if: 1. Its inflation forecasts for the next 18 to 24 months exceed 2.5 per cent; 2. There is a general expectation of higher inflation in the medium term; or 3. The BoE’s financial policy committee believes there is a risk of financial instability, such as a bubble in the housing market. In reality, all three of these are a distinct possibility, particularly as the BoE also confirmed the economic recovery by revising its growth forecasts: GDP has been increased to 1.5 per cent for this year and to 2.4 per cent for 2014. In the short term, Mr Carney probably won’t have to back-track as the BoE’s economists will no doubt continue their record of making optimistic inflation forecasts. The Chancellor hired a markets-savvy former investment banker and gave him a mandate to get the economy growing at all costs. Mr Osborne will surely be delighted with Mr Carney’s approach as it suggests the economy will be allowed to grow unchecked until after the 2015 general election, greatly enhancing the Conservatives’ chances of winning a majority.
from three. Were sterling to weaken against the dollar, which is quite possible given that US interest rates are now likely to rise before UK rates, inflation would be pushed up by higher food and oil import prices. And, with a recovering economy, workers will start to feel more confident in asking for wage increases, particularly as real wages have been falling for over three years. So, we appear to be heading towards a period of higher inflation, which will be exacerbated by a government-sponsored housing boom. In these circumstances, interest rates would normally be increased before the end of 2014. However, with an election in May 2015 and a BoE governor with form in allowing asset bubbles to grow unchecked (i.e. the Canadian housing market), it is more likely that there will be a hard landing in 2015/16 as the BoE tries to shut the stable door after inflation has bolted. The tension between what should happen and what will probably happen is likely to increase volatility in financial markets (and ultimately in consumer expectations) over the next two years. Ironically, such uncertainty would be the very opposite of what forward guidance is intended to achieve. In the meantime, consumers should use the opportunity to reduce debt to a level that is affordable were interest rates to rise sharply in 2015. Greg Mahon is the regional director for Rathbones’ Chichester office. For more information go to rathbones.com
Mr Carney used forward guidance successfully in Canada in 2009/10, when he said that rates would remain at very low levels for at least fifteen months, it has been adopted by the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan
However, Mr Carney’s 2016 vision of strong economic growth supported by ultra-low interest rates, but without inflation, is very optimistic – particularly given that the Government’s ‘Help to Buy’ scheme may be stoking up a housing market bubble. With the economy returning to meaningful growth, a prudent BoE would contemplate a rise in interest rates as early as next year, particularly as they are currently so low. Instead, it is turning a blind eye and there is a real risk of inflation taking hold. Since December 2009, CPI inflation has been at or above 2.5 per cent every month apart

How do I take an amazing photo?
Whether it’s a breath-taking landscape or casual candids at a wedding, taking a good picture is an art form. So we’ve enlisted the help of professional Jonathan Dillon to show us how it’s done Rule of thirds When looking through the viewfinder and lining up a shot, try splitting the scene up in to three segments, both vertically and horizontally (see image on right). Rather than taking a photo head on with the subject (like all the other amateurs will likely be doing), try placing points of interest either in one of the sections, or along the lines. For example, you could put a horizon in line with the top or bottom line, and the main point of interest off centre to one of the side sections. This makes pictures more interesting than the typical ‘point and click’ shots. If done right, this technique allows the viewer to browse across the image and see it in a more natural way.
Draw the viewer in Place an object or point of interest in the foreground of your photo to help guide the viewer in to the picture. Anything from a footpath, face, tree or handrail can be used to draw the eyes along and in to the deeper part of an image. Take a look at the image I took of Monument Valley in Arizona (above). The log helps guide you in to the centre of the picture.
Think of other angles Don’t just stay standing with the camera, get down to floor level, or perhaps elevate yourself with the camera and see how you can achieve different variations of the same shot. It’ll soon become evident which is more effective depending on the subject matter. You’ll be amazed at how moving the camera to a higher or lower position can completely change an outlook of a photo.

Lighting If you’re fortunate enough to find yourself at a scenic destination during either sunrise or sunset, be sure to make use of the changing light from the sun. There are two ‘golden hours’ to every day. These two times normally work best when taking landscape/scenery shots. Half an hour before and after sunrise, half an hour before and after sunset. This is when light is normally at its most dramatic offering interesting variations in colour. In the middle of the day, natural light is at its most intense as the sun is directly above. This harsh lighting can cause problems as it casts harsh shadows. These are particularly annoying when it comes to portrait photography, where a flash is normally used to fill in shading from the sun.
Perfect portraits When you’re a guest at a wedding or event, it’s all about waiting for that right moment to capture - taking nice photos of people having a good time. Take a look around, and look out for those moments when people are in conversation with each other, smiling and laughing. These ‘candid’ shots make great memories when people are acting naturally, not realising they’re under surveillance!
And don’t forget Always go out knowing your battery is fully charged, and if possible carry a spare battery with you. Make sure there’s enough spare room on the memory card, or take a few spares with you. Happy snapping! For more information go to creativephotoimages.co.uk or call Jonathan on 07811395511
Kitted out A tripod is ideal for stabilising the camera, in order to decrease the chances of image blur. You can pick up some really cheap, small travel tripods you can easily squeeze in to suitcases. Alternatively, if you find yourself without a tripod at hand, make use of your surroundings e.g. a wall or ledge of some sort to help stabilise the camera. A flash is essential to fill in shadows either when light is low, or if the sun is behind your subject and their face needs lighting up with fill light. Most cameras come with flashes, perfect for when fill light is needed.
About Jonathan “A friend of mine quit his photography course at university and I started using his camera. That was when I realised I had a passion for taking pictures so I carried on”, he told Fine Sussex. Now, almost three years later, Jonathan (or Jonny as he is often known) is a professional photographer, snapping portraits, landscapes and also taking on corporate or product assignments. The 25-year-old was mostly self-taught for his first year and went on to study a diploma at the Photography Institute in London.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER A Sussex florist’s business is growing and winning awards, thanks to its commitment to quality and sustainability
Sashma Windsor’s business, Lettuce Flowers, has won an international business award. The local company, which makes living, edible floral arrangements for corporate events and weddings, has won a Green Apple Environment business award. The company will find out whether it has won Bronze, Silver or Gold at a prize-giving event at the House of Commons later this year. Lettuce Flowers has been enjoying increasing success nationally and has created floral displays for the Guardian Sustainable Business Awards, the PEA Awards, Brighton Centre and Haymarket events and is becoming a familiar name on the Sussex wedding scene. Sushma created Lettuce Flowers as a sustainable alternative to the cut flower industry, which can cause environmental damage. The company supports local nurseries by using plants grown within a 35-mile radius of Billingshurst. All Lettuce Flowers’ displays and arrangements use edible plants, including herbs, edible flowers and, of course, lettuces. Windsor told Fine Sussex: “It’s such an honour to receive the recognition of an established awards scheme like the Green Apple awards. I’ve poured my

heart and soul into Lettuce Flowers and have had a very positive response, but the company is still in its infancy, so the award is particularly gratifying. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Lettuce Flowers. From our plants and the way they are grown to the containers we plant them in and the transport we use, we’re always looking for ways to limit our environmental footprint. Our displays are every bit as beautiful as the kind of thing a florist would produce, but they go on living long after the event they were created for.” The International Green Apple awards have been running since 1994 and have become a feeder scheme for British entries into the Brussels-led European Business Awards for the Environment.

real I GOOD FOOD At Goodwood you can enjoy a hearty, healthy and delicious meal made using ingredients reared, raised or grown just a stone’s throw away on its own farm. James Hood had a tour and learnt that care, experience and a commitment to traditional farming is what makes the venue’s menus unbeatable
t’s a pretty well known fact that fresh, natural food is best when it comes to our nutrition. And it’s also widely believed that choosing food from local sources comes with a low carbon ‘footprint’ and is therefore better for the environment. But rarely can we be quite so sure of where our meal has come from than when dining at Goodwood. Because although you probably know a lot about the historic house, the Revival event, the wedding venue and the incredibly stellar Kennels members club, you might not know that the estate also has a farm. But this is not just any farm. Here they provide not just wholesale suppliers with high quality produce, they also supply Goodwood with home-grown, fresh food and drink. That means that in the estate’s restaurants such as the Richmond Arms, you can be sure that, where possible, the food hasn’t travelled very far. The farm spans 3,500 acres and rears cows, sheep and pigs in vast fields and pens, allowing them to roam free, eat fresh grass and generally live a ‘happy life’ as farm manager Tim Hassell puts it. He said: “The animals are born and reared on the estate and for most of their lives they’re outside in the open air. We’d only bring them in if the conditions were particularly harsh. It’s a nice, natural way for them to live. They thrive like this. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” As the in-house butcher John Hearn explained, it’s not only good for the life of the animal – it can have a significant influence on taste. He told Fine Sussex: “There is no doubt that a well reared cow, pig or sheep that is free to roam and eat fresh grass and feed produces a better end result for the consumer. It’s particularly true of the cows, which we use for steaks, because they develop muscles that add taste if they can run free. These are beautiful animals that are treated with respect. And our customers enjoy the meat they produce because of that. It also makes a big difference when the animals live on the same farm as the meats are prepared. Our burgers for example are made on-site from mince, oats, salt and pepper. Nothing more. You won’t find any fresher.” In case you needed any reassurance about the quality of the processes and produce at the Goodwood farm, you should know it’s not only John and Tim who believe that what they do makes for excellent, wholesome food and dishes. The Great Taste Awards, one of the most respected benchmarks for superb food in the UK, has awarded Goodwood with two Gold Stars. And speaking to Tim, it’s no wonder they are award winning. The Sheffield-born farmer has more than 40 years’ experience in the industry and says that life at the Goodwood farm is a 24/7 job that usually sees him working seven days a week. He talks at length about the management and forward planning required to make a farm like this run effectively. “We move the animals around depending on the time of year and to allow crops to grow. Then they always have fresh food to graze on. People think I only have to plan the feeding of the cows or the shearing of the sheep. But I am already thinking about the logistics of 2014!”
48 | FINE SUSSEX
It makes a big difference when animals live on the same farm as the meats are prepared. Our burgers for example are made on-site from mince, oats, salt and pepper. Nothing more
The farm is known for producing not only beef, pork and lamb, but a range of other food and drink including cheeses, milk and even beers that are all homegrown. And all of the food and drink is used by the estate’s restaurants at The Kennels and The Richmond Arms. There you can enjoy a lunch or dinner (check the individual venues for times and availability) that’s been prepared using the finest foods from not too far away. At the Richmond Arms head chef Simon Wills is responsible for turning the food into a dish. And on the menu you’ll find creations such as cheese soufflé to start, home-reared lamb chargrilled and served in hay, Goodwood beef or pork shoulder for a main course, and apple and blackberry crumble for dessert. Of course, like any good restaurant, there is a wide choice available. So fish lovers can still order a fillet of salmon if they wish. But the real treat at Goodwood is knowing the food has been lovingly raised and prepared – so a home-grown dish is highly recommended. As Simon puts it: “Most of what we need is here already. The barley for the beer, the milk we need for the butter, the bacon... it’s all at my disposal, which as a creative chef is a dream come true. It is terrific to be able to say that the menu is wholly influenced by the produce that’s made available to me. And I think our guests benefit greatly from that.” To book a table at The Richmond Arms call 01243 775537 or go to goodwood.com

SOMETHING SWEET
OK, so it might not be the most extravagant food you’ll eat, but here in rural Sussex, fresh produce is on our doorstep. So as it’s in season and sublimely tasty at this time of year, here are a few recipes - for sweetcorn
Spicy sweetcorn and black bean burgers
What you need to do
What you will need (serves 4) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 small onion • 2 cloves garlic • 1 jalapeño pepper • half a red pepper • 1 x 400g can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 x 195g can of sweetcorn, drained and rinsed • 50g plain bread crumbs • 2 teaspoons cumin • Teaspoon curry powder • Teaspoon cayenne pepper • Teaspoon dried oregano • Salt and pepper • 50g plain flour (or as needed) • Burger buns • Sliced cheese • Shredded lettuce • Sliced tomatoes • Sliced avocado • Condiments of your choice
Place onion, jalapeño and garlic in a food processor and blitz until the ingredients are diced finely. Add the sweetcorn, black beans, cumin, curry powder, oregano, and cayenne. Season with salt and pepper and then blitz until well mixed. Place mixture into a mixing bowl, cover with cling film and place in the refrigerator for at least two hours. Remove chilled mixture from refrigerator and stir in breadcrumbs. Divide the mixture into four equal burgers and coat both sides with flour. Pour the oil into a heavy frying plan over a medium heat and cook the burgers for five to seven minutes on each side or until a crust develops and the patties are heated through. Alternatively pop on your barbecue and cook for five to seven minutes each side until heated through. Remove patties from heat and place onto burger buns with your toppings of choice.
Thai spiced sweetcorn fritters with chilli dipping sauce A great alternative to Thai fishcakes
What you will need (makes about 12) • 275g fresh, tinned or frozen sweetcorn • 1 tbsp kaffir lime leaves (finely sliced) • 2 tbsp fish sauce • 1 heaped tsp red curry paste • 1 tsp brown sugar • 2 tbsp cornflour • Vegetable oil for frying • 1 egg
50 | FINE SUSSEX
What you need to do Drain, defrost or prepare the sweetcorn, depending on which one you are using. Place two thirds of the sweetcorn in a blender together with all ingredients apart from the frying oil. Tip out into a large bowl and mix in remaining whole kernels of sweetcorn. Heat a wok or a frying pan and add about three to four tablespoons of vegetable oil and heat gently. Spoon a rounded tablespoon of the mixture into the hot oil. Cook about eight to 10 fritters at a time, and turn them over to cook on both sides. Drain on kitchen paper and keep warm. Serve with sweet chilli.
Mexican Elotes, Mexico’s finest street food What you will need (serves 6) • 6 corn on the cobs • 80g mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons sour cream • Teaspoon chilli pepper, plus more for serving • 2 teaspoons of juice from a lime • Pinch of salt • 60g grated cotija (Mexican cheese) or parmesan cheese if not available • Lime wedges for serving
What you need to do Prepare a medium hot grill or barbecue. Grill the corn until hot and lightly charred all over, about seven to 10 minutes, depending on the temperature of the grill. Meanwhile mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, lime juice salt and chill pepper. Roll the corn cobs in the mayonnaise mixture. Sprinkle with cheese and more chilli if desired and serve with a lime wedge.
Succotash sweetcorn stew with cornbread What you will need 350g podded broad beans, fresh or frozen 2 tbsp sunflower oil 200g smoked bacon lardons 50g butter 1 medium onion, chopped 25g plain flour 500ml chicken or vegetable stock 250g waxy potatoes, cut into 1cm dice 450g tinned sweetcorn 2 small courgettes, diced finely 400g can butter beans, drained and rinsed 100ml double cream 2 tbsp chopped chives 1 fresh corn on the cob or 70g frozen sweetcorn kernels, thawed 140g plain flour 100g cornmeal or polenta 1 tbsp baking powder 150ml semi-skimmed milk 4 tbsp olive oil 1 egg 1 tbsp clear honey
What you need to do Start by making the bread. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F, gas mark seven). Lightly coat an 18cm (7in) square baking tin that is 5cm (2in) deep with cooking spray or a teaspoon of olive oil. If using fresh corn on the cob, remove the kernels using a sharp knife. Set
aside. In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix together the flour, cornmeal/polenta and baking powder. In a small bowl, combine the sweetcorn, milk, oil, egg and honey, and beat well to mix. Pour the egg mixture into the flour and cornmeal mixture. Quickly and thoroughly mix together. Pour into the baking tin, scraping any mixture from the sides of the bowl into the tin. Spread the mixture evenly with a spatula. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned and a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean. Meanwhile, for the stew, bring a pan of salted water to the boil, add the broad beans and cook for five minutes. Drain and wash under cold water and then carefully remove the bright green beans from their skins. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, add the bacon and cook for one to two minutes, stirring, until lightly golden. Add the butter and onion and cook gently for six to seven minutes until the onion is soft but not browned. Add the flour, cook for one minute then gradually stir in the stock. Bring to the boil, stirring, and simmer for three minutes. Stir the potatoes into the pan and simmer for five minutes. Add the sweetcorn, courgettes and butter beans, and then simmer for five minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the broad beans and cream, season and simmer for one to two minutes. Stir in most of the chives. Ladle the stew into warm, shallow soup plates and sprinkle with more chives. Serve with a piece of warm cornbread.

EVERYTHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT
Tom Ford walked down the catwalk with a glass of it and Beyonce was photographed at her husband’s album launch with a tumbler of the beverage in hand - it’s a sure sign whisky is no longer reserved for your dad. So we’ve enlisted the help of Richard Macadam from The Angel Hotel in Midhurst and whisky writer Robin Laing, who share the knowledge you need before tasting the tipple
| 53
What we know for sure is that every whiskey is different. From the age and the colour to the aroma and taste. We also know that the whisky you enjoy, whether it’s a Glenlivet from Scotland or Jack Daniels from Tennessee, is largely down to personal taste. But what makes each one so individual and what do you need to know before making your mind up?
What should i look for when choosing a whisky? Go for Scotch Scotch whisky is the name most commonly given to whisky made in Scotland. It’s widely regarded as the best producer of the drink anywhere in the world. This is largely because of the centuries of skill they’ve acquired as well as a high quality of pure soil and water. You can also get American or Irish whiskey (note the added ‘e’ in the name). A Scottish whisky will usually be stronger and have a very distinctive taste, due to the
54 | FINE SUSSEX
ground and grains used. By contrast, an American whisky like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam will be sweeter. It is worth remembering, it is very much down to personal taste and there are countries around the world that produce a high-quality whisky or rye (as the Americans call it). But only a Scottish-made whisky can legally be labelled a Scotch.
Single malt Vs blended A single malt whisky is produced at one distillery, as opposed to a blended whisky, which is produced from different whiskies and usually of different ages. A single malt whisky tends to be more pure and stronger than a blended scotch. And despite the term ‘single’ malt, there is no such thing as a double malt.
Look at the age Like wine, the older the whisky the better and more expensive it is likely to be. But this is also a sign of quality. Malts are usually between 10 and 16 years old and an aged whisky is more mature – the longer it stays
in the barrel the better it tastes, and the more value it gains. Producers are usually proud of the length of time their whisky is distilled and there are pockets of vintages that offer a high quality of beverage. Also, by keeping them for longer in casks made from wood such as walnut, the flavour just gets better and better. Age can also drive demand and therefore price. There are five main areas in Scotland that produce whisky, each producing a Scotch that’s very different in flavour
Speyside These are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspeythe area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland. Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (Macallan).
Islay Islay (pronounced ‘eye-luh’) whiskies are among Scotland’s most powerful drams.
On the menu How do I know what to order? Again, this will be down to personal taste and I would advise anyone to taste a few whiskies and decide which they like best. If you are faced with a choice from a menu, read any information provided about where it was produced. Start with a Scotch if you are unsure and you can always ask the advice of the barman or waiter.
How do you take it? Most self-respecting Scots-men would never add anything but water to his or her Scotch. If you want to do it properly, order a single either neat or with a dash of water (which releases more flavour). While many whisky drinkers consider it sacrilege to add anything but water to whisky, Robin Laing, a Scotsman with such a love of the drink he has written books, songs and poems on the subject, is undecided: “People have come to blows about this subject - but my honest opinion is that it should be left to each individual to decide no rules!”
Often with plenty of peat and smoke, brine and medicinal flavours, of all the whisky regions of Scotland, Islay has attained a truly iconic status.
Highlands The Highlands region is one of big-bodied whiskies, often peated and smoky, often very powerful. The Highlands is such a large, diverse region that is difficult to categorise their whiskies accurately.
Campbeltown These whiskies are a curious mix. Characteristics include a defined dryness with a pungency, smoke and a solid salinity. Imagine a cross between the Lowlands and the Western Highlands with a pinch of salt thrown in for good measure.
Lowland The Lowlands produces gentle, light whiskies, often very dry and devoid of peat. Lowland whiskies are commonly referenced as feminine drams, ‘the Lowland Ladies’.
The songwriter and author, who writes tasting notes for the Scottish Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) added: “I think it depends on the whisky. Most whisky has already had water added to it twice - once when it goes into the cask and then again when it is diluted to the lowest allowable bottle strength (i.e. 40 per cent alcohol). The best single malt in my opinion is single cask, at natural strength - anywhere between 50 per cent and 60 per cent. At natural strength it makes sense to add a drop of water, because the high alcohol can be fierce in its impact on the mouth and the nose. The arguments advocated by those who recommend adding water (apart from just the taming of the brew) are that it somehow activates or opens up the whisky - allowing other flavours and aromas to emerge. There is some truth in this - at the SMWS we always write tasting notes that describe the difference water – sometimes called ‘releasing the serpent’ or ‘the dew on the rose’ – can make. It’s a complicated issue. But the safest rule, for me, is no rules - except maybe if you serve somebody a good single malt and they reach for the Coca-Cola! I served some malts at a tasting on Colonsay once and a table of English ladies were putting Lilt in the Ardbeg Uigeadail. When challenged, they said: ‘Well, son, we like the effect, but we don’t like the taste’. Can’t really argue with that.” With thanks to Robin Laing and Richard Macadam from The Angel Hotel, Midhurst.
RICHARD’S TOP FIVE MALTS Jura Superstition, Islay Taking the smooth fruity notes of regular Jura and adding some peat makes for a heady combination as the flavours are enhanced and highlighted. Crafted from a selection of the finest aged Jura single malt whiskies, this mysterious spirit has a unique style and character, where tastes of spice, honey, pine and peat with a whisper of smoke make a dramatic impact. Bottled at 43 per cent volume. Currently on offer from major supermarkets from £25 per bottle (it’s normally £32 upwards).
Dalmore 12 year old, Highland This north Highland beauty has been a big hit with our customers over the last three years. Rich, full- flavoured and beautifully packaged. This north Highland distillery produces aged malts that command the highest prices from investors, but this is proof that even its younger whiskies are rich, full-flavoured and complex. masterofmalt.com £33
The Balvenie DoubleWood 12yr old, Speyside A wonderful single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types. Over the period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt - the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour. Waitrose £32
Talisker 10 yr old, The isle of Skye From the western shores of the Isle of Skye, in the tall shadows of the Cuillin Hills, comes a single malt like no other. An alluring, sweet, full-bodied spirit with a warming afterglow, so easy to enjoy yet, like Skye itself, so hard to leave. Talisker, made beside the Loch Harport in the jagged shadow of the Cuillin range, is the only single malt whiskey from the Isle of Skye. A soft, smoky nose introduces an enticing, sweet taste. Fullbodied and smooth, this muscular malt also has a robust, deep intensity. It has a long, richly warming finish. Available in most supermarkets from £32
Glenfarclas 10 year old, Speyside This is proper whisky making at its finest – top quality distilling and maturation in the finest sherry wood. No gimmicks. Makes it look easy - it isn’t. Full-bodied Speyside whisky matured in Sherry casks and rich in orange and red berry fruits. World class whisky making from this family-run distillery. From £40

SOUTH LODGE HOTEL come rain or shine
Cassie Over, wedding coordinator from the luxury Horsham hotel, explains why a winter wedding there is so special. And says that if you haven’t set the date, you might want to consider celebrating your nuptials with a backdrop of golden brown leaves and roaring fires The calendar turns as we welcome the new year and with that the doormat full of Christmas cards gives way to invitation after invitation for that oh so popular summer wedding. But why are summer weddings so popular and is there an up and coming trend for a more cosy affair in winter months? At South Lodge Hotel we are fortunate to be able to offer a perfect venue for all seasons. In spring we welcome a striking colourful display of rhododendrons. Our outdoor wedding pavilion offers the unique opportunity to marry with the beautiful backdrop of the South Downs in summer months. Within the 93 acres of parkland, plenty of vibrant colours in the autumn set a theme for your wedding day, and candlelit ceremonies and roaring log fires add to the atmosphere of love and romance when there is a chill in the winter air. So why are couples opting for a winter wedding on the increase? At South Lodge Hotel we are certainly starting to see this trend developing as more and more couples go for what is seen to be an off-peak wedding date. Weather is the main factor that our brides and grooms discuss with us, the ‘what ifs, buts and maybes’ if it rains on their day when they have planned an outdoor ceremony. We are fortunate to be able offer wet weather plans in one of our stunning individually designed function rooms and will ensure one is always at the ready just in case of that short, sharp summer shower. Weather is the one element of a bride and groom’s day that they cannot control and as much as we can give a five-star service, and overcome most issues, we cannot, with regret, make the sun shine on their special day. Because of this, many are choosing not
to put their trust in the gods and plan a day where weather is not a factor and can in turn be a blessing if the sun pays a visit on their day; however it is not all about the weather. Finding the suppliers of your choice on your wedding day in the summer months can be challenging as the very best are in huge demand and may be booked up for years in advance just like some wedding venues can be. Availability is better in winter months therefore our wedding couples find that they don’t have to make snap decisions on their photographer, band, cake and florists as dates are not in as much demand. Likewise if you marry in summer when social calendars are full and summer holidays are booked ahead of time, you run that risk that family and friends may not be able to make your special day.
Plenty of of vibrant colours in the autumn set a theme for your wedding day, and candlelit ceremonies and roaring log fires add to the atmosphere of love and romance when there is a chill in the winter air
So, the question is mulled wine or Pimm’s? A fur shrug or a lace bolero? Ceremonies by candlelight or outdoors? What is your preference, perhaps a winter wedding now? All that remains to say is that if you have just got engaged, then many congratulations from all at South Lodge Hotel and we would love to show you around our wedding venue for all seasons. Choose South Lodge for your winter wedding with 60 guests or more in January or February 2014 and we will put ‘the icing on the cake’ for you. Bride, groom and six of the wedding party seated at the top table will be wined and dined with our compliments. For more information visit South Lodge Hotel on the Brighton Road, Lower Beeding, Nr. CHOOSING THE
RIGHT RING More and more couples are choosing engagement rings together. So if you’re really not sure that your knowledge of your partner’s taste is spot on, consider bringing them with you. At Julian Stephens, it’s good fun! And an experience that can make you feel closer as there’s a lot to see and a lot to think about it.
the stone. On the other hand, if you are set on a particular metal the right stone can be found to complement it. “A sapphire in yellow gold will appear warm and lustrous, in 18ct white gold it will seem stormy and mysterious, and in platinum it will become glittery and ice-like. The beauty of bespoke is that you get to actually see and try out all these options.”
Naturally the stone in most designs forms the centrepiece of the engagement ring. Tradition dictates that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and we can help find the perfect one for you, with an array of the classic round brilliants to choose from as well as a wide selection of other shapes, cuts, colours and grades. Julian Stephens also has a real passion for other fine gems. He specialises in engagement rings featuring something unique – a fiery blood red ruby, a sparkling rich green demantoid garnet, a vibrant, deep purple sapphire. He says: “With these stones an engagement ring becomes something more – a fine piece of art built around an exquisite and unique jewel. Diamonds are wonderful, but don’t be afraid to explore other options. Come and have a look.”
The engagement ring is only half the story though, and it is important to consider that it will be worn with a wedding band. One advantage to having a bespoke piece is that you can plan ahead if you know you want a plain wedding ring, and design an engagement ring that will accommodate it. If you’re after something more unusual, however, then a custom ring can always be designed with a custom wedding band in mind - something shaped to fit round the stone, or embellished with stones or engraving to compliment the engagement ring. Finally, whether you bring your own ideas or let the beautiful work in our gallery inspire you, don’t pass up the possibility of perfection – this is one time when only perfection will do.
If you are to build your ring around the gemstone that has captured your heart, the metal you use may well be dictated by the colour or hue of

WEDDING DRESS DECISIONS A wedding day should be absolutely perfect, so it’s no wonder brides want to look their very best. Emma Howie from Henfield bridal shop White Mischief passes on some expert advice for dressing for your shape
70 | FINE SUSSEX
I
t’s so important to go into your first wedding dress shop with a clear, open mind. You may have collected hundreds of cuttings from magazines of girls looking fabulous in that ‘dream’ dress of yours, but you won’t really know until you try something on as to whether it is truly the right dress, or even style, for you. We have seen so many girls come in with a set idea in their head of what they always wanted and leave while saying “I never thought I’d go for that!” This isn’t by all means a bad thing. This is the exact reason why designers design dresses in so many different styles; one style, simply does not suit all. For girls with apple-shaped figures, we recommend A-line gowns; this brings the focus to the smallest part of your body. With added help from an inner corset, which most of our A-lines have, you can really cinch in that waist and create an enviable hourglass shape. Boat neck styles tend to balance a large chest while having a long train will create the illusion of a small waist. This is because the widest part of the dress is at the bottom and so, like a triangle, makes you look smaller at the top. Who can resist a glamorous train anyway? If you are one of the lucky girls who has that enviable hourglass shape, or if you have smaller hips and want to balance your shape, we recommend fishtails to best show it off. By bringing focus to your hips; flaring just above the knees, fishtails will give the illusion of a balanced shape. Your shoulders won’t look too broad, as your hips will compliment them in proportion. Adding a corset will cinch in your waist and exaggerate the hourglass shape even more. If you’re a girl with more of a straight, boyish figure, a corset will give you this exact look. The fishtail is such a sexy, elegant silhouette. Any girl would look like a bombshell on her wedding day.
Princess cuts are perfect for pear-shaped girls. The full skirt hides wide hips and shows off your best bits, while the waist line will bring in your waist to make it look super tiny, giving you a balanced silhouette. Steer clear of tiered, trumpet and mermaid cuts, as these will emphasize wider hips and make your shoulders appear smaller. If you are only slightly pear shaped but you can’t resist anything other than a mermaid cut, choose one with sleeves or off the shoulder straps. This will balance your shape and give the illusion your shoulders are wider, creating the hourglass look.
We have seen so many girls come in with a set idea in their head of what they always wanted and leave while saying ‘I never thought I’d go for that’
Be sure to take your time finding your shape and be smart about it. Try on every style you can to help narrow it down. But always remember girls, you wear the dress; the dress does not wear you! For more styling advice, visit White Mischief Bridal, Henfield, to find the perfect dress for you or call 01273 495566.

INTERNET S what to tell your kids about
82 | FINE SUSSEX
SAFETY
As abuse online comes to the fore in the media, there’s never been a better time to address the dangers of social media and other websites with your children. Our education expert Jennifer Orgill explains how you can broach the topic and shares a handy acronym for making it memorable
A
s we all know, the use of the internet and social networks has increased massively in recent years. The advances in the technology we have in our homes and literally at our fingers tips has many positive uses - we can entertain ourselves with games and music, communicate with family and friends across the world, share photos and other personal data, buy things at our convenience, catch up on our favourite programmes, research and discover answers to questions and know instantly about global events. As with many things however, the internet has to be used safely and with respect. When it is used to defraud, abuse or bully, the consequences can be devastating.
an example – we all know they can be time killers sometimes!
To keep your child safe whilst using their mobile phones, PC or tablet you should involve yourself with what they are doing. If they like to play games ask them about the games they are playing, get them to explain why they like the game and discuss strategies that they use to complete the game successfully. Needless to say, follow the age and rating on the games and set the parental controls on the devices that they are using. Discuss with your child why you are doing this and what they should do if they should access anything on the internet that they find upsetting in anyway. If they can play online with their friends again help them to do this, reinforcing the need for them to invite friends that are known to them and discuss appropriate behaviour.
MEETING
You can explain to them the need for caution when posting photos online, they might have set the PC or tablet to share with their “friends” only but their friends may not have. If they then share the photos or videos, you and your child can lose control of who sees them. Did you know that Facebook and many other online communities have an age limit of 13 and over? You may also find it helpful to reach an agreement on a time limit for the use of the internet and mobile phones; for example charge their phones overnight so that they can not use them when they should be sleeping. You may also choose to limit your own use of your mobile phone or tablet, as
Tell your kids how to be safe on the internet using the acronym SMART. It is good advice for us all.
SAFE Explain it is not safe to share passwords or personal details, including photos of themselves and their friends on the internet. Explain that photos and videos on chat lines can be shared and be seen by others. Like you would in the street, have a No Strangers rule so that they are only communicating with their friends. Encourage your child to tell you if a stranger is trying to ‘chat’ with them or meet them - they may not be who they say they are.
Let them know they should never arrange to meet anyone over the Internet even with one of their peers. Again, encourage your children to tell you if someone wants to meet with them.
ACCEPTING Do not accept ‘friend’ invites from strangers or open emails from unknown senders. Discuss the dangers of viruses and hacking.
RELIABLE There is a huge amount of information on the net and anyone can put it on there. So, check more than one site when looking for information on line.
TELL If your children see something that is upsetting or offensive on the internet, or feel threatened, then they should know they need to tell someone. Just like they would at any other time in life. There are many resources, including short films and quizzes about safety and how to use the internet responsibly that you can share with your child. These are a few I have used as a primary school teacher: bbc.co.uk/cbbc/topics/stay-safe kidsmart.org.uk thinkuknow.co.uk

ONLINE SAFETY at Hurst
Hurstpierpoint College addresses the issues as well as the benefits that the internet can bring to pupils’ learning
T
he internet has revolutionised the way people communicate with each other, both on a personal and commercial basis. This, in turn, has undoubtedly brought great benefits to the world of education. But (there’s always a but) there is growing opinion among educators and parents alike, that the web is a potential minefield in terms of safety for the children in our care.
indeed at Hurst. From the very start of the DPC project the College tackled these issues head-on. We worked extensively to harness the experience of children, parents, professionals and groups such CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) to create the best possible educational package. The aim is to enable children to use the internet with confidence, with training that strikes the right balance; yes we want them to be aware of potential dangers and pitfalls of the online world but we don’t want to give them – or their parents – nightmares!
All Year 7 and 8 Hurst pupils are issued with their own personal iPads – to be used as a ‘Digital Pencil Case’ (DPC) in their schoolwork. Most children don’t take much convincing that there are benefits from using the web as part of their learning. The advantages are clear from the standard of their work and it gives the school almost instant feedback as to the effectiveness of the DPC initiative. Harder to pin down can be the negative aspects of being online. They occur behind closed bedroom doors; mobile technology can be seen as eating its way into children’s privacy. Their safe haven is no longer safe. What seems a friendly online environment can quickly change into something much more sinister.
With the help of CEOP trained staff and a regular, on-going tutoring programme for the pupils, alongside staff training on INSET days, we talk to our pupils about these issues openly and honestly. We impress upon them that there is always someone to talk to, someone who will listen and help if things begin to go wrong, as inevitably sometimes they will. Just as importantly, we guide our children so that they make informed decisions about their online activity and take responsibility for that activity.
The threats to children’s wellbeing posed by those who seek out children online to ‘befriend’ them, as well as cyber-bullies and so-called trolls are taken very seriously
84 | FINE SUSSEX
This is very much a partnership between school, pupil and parents and we continue to develop the open dialogue between all three, as our experience shows that many parents feel they need the help just as much as their children do. For more information go to hppc.co.uk

ACTING UP Our education expert Jennifer Orgill explains why teaching drama at school is so worthwhile and says it can have profound effects on your child’s success in and out of the classroom
Imagination is more important than knowledge ALBERT EINSTEIN
D
rama is an effective means of conveying ideas, facts and feelings. Through drama we are encouraged to think, observe, question and to empathise. “A passion for the dramatic art is inherent in the nature of man” (Edwin Forrest). It is frequently used as a way into writing, history and even science. Strategies such as role play, hot seating (interviewing a character, real or imaginary from the past, present or future) freeze framing (holding a pose from a particular key moment in a story or significant real life event) help to reinforce learning across the curriculum. Most teachers endeavour to introduce VAK activities (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic) into their lesson planning. Drama provides an opportunity to bring a kinaesthetic element into the classroom. Children who may find it difficult to sit still for a length of time respond well to such activities. Drama can also be used to develop empathy with characters and helps children to respond to situations, both real and imaginary, with increased understanding. It can also encourage them to develop their questioning
skills. Drama develops a child’s imagination and a means of communicating both facts and feelings in a creative manner. Albert Einstein recognised this when he said: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Without imagination, Einstein may not have wondered about time and space and may not have developed his theory of relativity. Over the academic year, most children will have an opportunity to be involved in a performance of some kind, such as a Nativity, or a class assembly. Preparing for a production, whether it is preparing a poem to be read aloud in class or having an acting part, can develop confidence in reading, develop expression whilst reading and increase comprehension of the text. Being involved in a performance develops cooperation, whether your children has a lead role or is building props, designing or selling tickets. All of these elements can develop a sense of being part of a team and lead to a real sense of achievement. Drama allows us to imagine and to be creative in a way that frees our self conscious. Through drama we can explore our feelings and those of others; to understand the past, present and future.

MEET THE HEAD OF DRAMA
Juliet McKinnell-Merrett from Great Walstead explains why her class is so important in the development of bright young things
What do you like best about teaching Drama? The chance to explore the creative side of a pupil’s talents and the opportunity to see pupils grow in confidence through performance.
What does a typical drama lesson involve? A re-cap on work to date, a ‘warm up’, improvisation, main lesson topic and then a ‘cool down’.
Is there much theory studied or is it a practical lesson? Yes we cover theory and a cross-curricular aspect within every lesson. For example Year 4 learn about a Victorian play at the same time that they are studying Victorians in History. Year 5 learn about ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare and perform an extract, and in Year 6 they study the text in English. Each year group is taught in a similar way so that their Drama lessons, as well as developing performance skills, serve also to support academic work undertaken in the classroom.
Do pupils get to perform in front of an audience? Yes, every pupil from Year 2 through to Year 4 takes part in two performances a year. Pupils in Years 5 through to 8 take part in at least one performance each year.
What are the facilities like for Drama at Great Walstead? Excellent. We have a performance space, the Chapel, which has flexible staging and stage lighting, and a rehearsal space, the Drama Studio, which has stage lighting.
Tell us a bit about the syllabus - what type of plays or scripts do you work on? A wide range. From ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll for Juniors, through to ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare for Seniors. Juniors start with An Introduction to Improvisation, with scripted work introduced in Year 4. This is gradually developed through the school incorporating the History of Theatre and crosscurricular texts.
What if my child is shy or doesn’t enjoy performing, are there other roles? It is extremely rare for a pupil not to take part in a production. We find through lessons and rehearsals pupils grow in confidence. On those rare occasions, though, there is stage management.
Why do you think Drama is an important part of a child’s learning or development? Because it helps them to grow in confidence, develop teamwork skills and learn to explore their imagination without the use of pen or paper.
Do you have a favourite play? ‘Pygmalion’ by George Bernard Shaw
How many hours a week are dedicated to Drama? For each pupil one lesson or 35 minutes per week. For more information go to greatwalstead.co.uk

MEET THE HEAD
John Green, head teacher at Seaford College, explains how they approach teaching at the school and says education is about more than just academia
In your eyes, what makes a great headmaster? Someone who is a good communicator and listener, who is ambitious for every pupil and maintains a high visibility throughout the school.
What do you most enjoy about being a headmaster? J
oh n
Gr ee
n
Being able to make a positive, ambitious difference to all pupils.
What is special about Seaford College? Seaford is the most friendly school I have taught in. Pupils gain confidence to realise their true potential, both inside and outside the classroom. Our academic value added scores are also outstanding.
What advantages do you think an independent school can give a young person? We are able to provide a more bespoke education providing for our children, with outstanding opportunities and provision, academically and extra curricular.
Do you know all the children in your school? Nearly! I am very much a Head who manages by walkabout - so I certainly hope to know the majority of pupils by their first names sooner rather than later.
What’s your approach to education at Seaford College? I believe that education should be holistic - that takes in not just the academic, but moral, social, spiritual and physical aspects of life. Teaching is far more than preparing students for examinations, although given the importance of qualifications, that obviously plays a major part. However, I firmly believe we should be educating our students in the fullest sense, teaching them to think
and learn for themselves so that they can take up their places in the world as adults - ultimately responsible and accountable for their own decisions.
Do you do any teaching? This is my first year of headship at Seaford College, so probably not. However, I will be coaching games as well as covering various academic classes, so that I get an academic flavour of the school across all age groups.
How important do you think music and sport is for a child’s development? Both are equally as important. At Seaford we encourage all pupils to make the most of the wider curriculum sport, creative arts, outdoor education and community service.
Do you value and listen to input from parents? Absolutely. This term I shall be launching a new Parent Focus Group, which will meet twice a term. During the sessions, all areas of the school will be discussed from academic expectations to uniform. The focus group will also give me an opportunity to meet as many parents as possible - and include a very sociable glass of wine.
Do you think the recent Olympics have inspired younger people to achieve their dreams or goals? Yes, similar to athletics, academic success is all about striving for your personal bests. This is a message I consistently relay to all my pupils.
If you could be the education minister for a day, what is the one thing you would change? Listen more attentively to the views of experienced head teachers across all sectors so that the best academic/ examination policy is implemented for the benefit of all our children.
How do you relax? Spending time with my lovely wife and three children. Reading and attending various concerts. I also attempt to play golf on our magnificent golf course here at Seaford. Seaford College accepts pupils (girls and boys) from age seven to 18 for both boarding and day boarding. For more information go to seaford.org or call 01798 867392.

SUCCESS STORY Following a good year for results, the Headmistress at Farlington School, Louise Higson, explains what makes the school special and why she feels her pupils are high-achievers
Lo
ui se
Hi gs
on
Louise Higson, Headmistress at Farlington, is originally from the North West of England and went to the University of Manchester where she studied Mathematics. She started her teaching career in 1994 at Calday Grange Grammar School for Boys in West Kirby, Wirral. From there she went on to teach in Milan for three years before returning to the UK. She joined Farlington in 2005 and this is the start of her second year as Headmistress.
Tell us something about your background? I live in Hove. I love travelling; this summer I did a 2,000-mile road trip through California in a Mustang convertible! I enjoy outdoor pursuits and am always ready for a challenge. In March last year I completed a charity abseil from the roof of the Sofitel at Gatwick Airport in aid of The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for children with Cerebral Palsy. I am also a bit of a foodie and enjoy both cooking at home and eating out.
In your eyes, what makes a great Headmistress? Someone who has vision for the school, integrity and a determination to succeed. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances both locally and nationally. A passion for what you do.
What do you most enjoy about being a Headmistress? I enjoy seeing the young people in my care grow and flourish into confident individuals with the self-belief to pursue their own personal goals and make a positive contribution to the wider community. I also enjoy the fact that every day is different – it keeps me on my toes.
What’s your approach to education at Farlington? At Farlington we educate for confidence. We believe in an all-round education where each girl is known and valued as an individual; she will leave Farlington as a well-educated young woman, with the skills, knowledge and most importantly the self-belief to shape her own future.
What is special about Farlington? Farlington has a wonderful sense of community. We value individuality, celebrate diversity and encourage our girls to have the confidence to think for themselves, while emphasising the importance of tolerance, teamwork and collective responsibility.
What advantages do you think an independent school can give a young person? An all-round education. Academic results matter because they give young people choices, but pupils also need to have the opportunities available to them for a wide range of extra-curricular activities. The competition for university places is high – I believe we help each individual to stand out from the crowd. We are very proud of our results success this year: at A level 57% of all grades were A/A* and at GCSE 62% were A/A*.
Do you know all the children in your school? Yes, of course! This is a very important part of my role.
How important do you think music and sport are for a child’s development? Vital. It is an opportunity to let off steam, improve coordination and develop a different part of the brain.
Do you value and listen to input from parents? Yes, we have a ‘Round Table’ forum where parents are able to feed in their ideas. Good communication between parents and school is essential for the happiness of the girls and the success of the school.
How can younger people be inspired to want to achieve their dreams or goals? They need to have positive role models, and also be encouraged to believe in themselves, work hard and aim high.
If you could be the education minister for a day, what is the one thing you would change? I believe a period of stability for exams would be welcome. The new AS and A Levels are due to be introduced in 2015, and there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the reform of GCSEs. Qualifications that are robust and free up more time for teaching, by eliminating modules and continuous assessment, are important and will have a greater educational benefit for all pupils. I would give every family in the country a free pass to museums, art galleries and theatres for the year. For more information go to farlingtonschool.net

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM AN
OPENDAY
Mrs Yudi Irvine, head of Admissions and Marketing at Burgess Hill School for Girls explains why open days are vital in getting a feel for a school as well as giving a few tips on the things you should look for or the questions to ask
Receiving a copy of a glossy prospectus through the door will give you an idea of the school you have expressed an interest in for your child. But when it comes to understanding the environment and atmosphere within the school, it is best to visit in person. Visiting on an Open day will give you an opportunity to decide if you are sufficiently impressed by what you see, and the people you meet, to make a follow up private visit.
If possible, take your child with you – they will ask questions that you may not have thought of and they will certainly notice things that you miss
92 | FINE SUSSEX
Most schools run their major open days in September and October, aimed at families looking for a school place for their child to start the following September. However schools also welcome those forward thinking parents visiting several years in advance. This is a busy time for schools and you may find a number of schools on your list have their open days on the same day. Look at their websites and see if they have planned programmes for the day or if you have to make an appointment – this will help you to plan your visits and in what order. Don’t hesitate to phone beforehand for further information, you will get a feel for how welcoming and flexible the school is, which is an important factor if your child is to become a pupil there.
insight into the ethos of the school. Ask yourself what appears to be most important, your child’s needs or those of the school? Your tour guide will more than likely be a student. In an ideal world they will not be reading off a script and they will clearly feel comfortable giving you their honest view of the school. Bear in mind they may have their own spin on whether they do enough sport or not, or whether they have too much homework, etc, based on their personal preferences. They may indeed show you the water fountain or where ‘Flossie’ fell over last Tuesday, but they can also tell you what it is like in the classroom and what kind of opportunities they are given. Students should be the best ambassadors for any school. If you do have any ‘tricky’ questions, the student guide may not the best person to ask as they may not know the answer. It is worth checking important details with a member of staff to ensure there is no misunderstanding. There should be plenty of opportunities to talk to staff during and at the end of your tour. If possible, seek an opportunity to meet those students at the top end of the school – they represent and embody the quality of the education, in the broadest sense, provided by the school. Would you like your child to represent the same values in years to come? These senior students should speak openly and confidently about their experience of the school and their aspirations for the future.
If possible, take your child with you – they will ask questions that you may not have thought of and they will certainly notice things that you miss. However, remember why you are choosing independent education for your child and don’t base your decision solely on your child’s like or dislike of the playground or another superficial factor. As you visit various schools, the format of the day will vary enormously – be prepared, large schools may be busy and your opportunities to talk to specific members of staff may be limited.
You will gather an assortment of information from the school as you leave. Try not to be overwhelmed with all the details - it is most important to try and get a ‘feel’ for the school atmosphere and ethos. A school should value each child so take time to look at the work on display, it should represent a broad range of abilities. Visitors to Burgess Hill School for Girls regularly comment on the friendly atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the teachers they speak to. The girls are universally praised for the way they look after the families they guide around the school and for the confidence they display in the discussions they have. For us, success is knowing that our visitors leave with a positive opinion of what they have seen and then welcoming them back for a follow up visit. We hope you will choose to visit us and that you too will enjoy your glimpse of our vibrant community which buzzes with the sound of happy, enthusiastic and motivated young learners. We look forward to seeing you and your daughter on Tuesday 5th November from 10.45am to 12.15pm.
Open Days will always include a presentation from the Head teacher. Try to attend this to gain further

MEET THE NEW HEAD Iona at the Grand Canyon this summer
of Pre-Prep at The Prebendal
We spoke to Iona Carmody about her unusual path to Chichester, her love of teaching and living life to the full
Her first teaching post was in 1991 and she continued her love of educating youngsters by moving to Cape Town and teaching in the shadow of Table Mountain
The new head of Pre-Prep at The Prebendal School in Chichester has already found her feet in her first term. Charged with bringing the department into a new and exciting era, Iona Carmody has a passion for life whether it is in the classroom, travelling around the world or taking on board new experiences. She was born in Lusaka, Zambia, and after four years her family moved to Swaziland and then shortly afterwards to South Africa. Her first teaching post was in 1991 and she continued her love of educating youngsters by moving to Cape Town and teaching five to eight year olds in the shadow of Table Mountain. Iona arrived in the UK 13 years ago when she taught Reception and Year 4. She was then appointed by an independent school and was the head of Girls’ Games and the head of department for Years 3 and 4. She is also currently completing her dissertation for a Masters in Education. Her passion for life took her driving America’s Route 66 this summer before heading to Canada. She
has learnt how to kayak, how to rock climb and has passed the preliminary stage to becoming a ‘Cape Wine Academy’ Master. Iona says travelling is not her only vice: “I love photography and art and the National Gallery is a favourite haunt. I’m looking forward to becoming a Friend of Pallant Gallery, I’m a member of a book club and I love collecting antique keys and glass paperweights.” Her current challenge is the Pre-Prep department at The Prebendal School where girls and boys aged three to seven form a close-knit community with small class sizes and a strong sense of identity. Iona says she’s more than ready: “With 23 years of teaching experience, I know that these early years are crucial. Nurturing each child’s individuality and encouraging them to be resilient, resourceful, reflective and collaborative learners will be our compass. Inspiring a love for learning will undoubtedly make their journey all the more richer and rewarding.” For more information go to prebendalschool.org.uk

Her third book, The 15 Essential Marketing Masterclasses For Your Small Business has been released worldwide by John Wiley & Sons.
I don’t believe that every small business owner should be ‘tweeting’. In fact, for some small businesses it could be a complete waste of time. If a business’s target audience, potential clients, existing clients or introducers do not subscribe to Twitter in meaningful quantities or the product or service being offered by the business is unsuitable, it is unlikely that the tool will be an effective marketing tactic. For example, one of my clients designs high level security systems for financial institutions. Because of the highly confidential nature of their work and the fact that their clients cannot be named, posting messages on Twitter would be a pointless exercise for them.
conversations with them, you may feel that you’re failing to properly represent your business by not becoming involved yourself. Or perhaps you’ll find that your competitors are active on Twitter but not using it to its full potential, instead simply posting repetitive tweets promoting their services. In these circumstances you have the chance to establish yourself on Twitter and to outshine your competitors. If your clients are already regular users, joining Twitter yourself will provide the opportunity to build even stronger relationships with them by keeping in touch on a more informal basis.
Before deciding whether Twitter is an appropriate marketing activity for your own business, spend some time familiarizing yourself with the tool. Look into whether any of your existing clients are already using it. Are there any prospects that you would like to do business with amongst the registered users? How about any influencers you would like to reach, suppliers you’re working with, or any of your competitors?
Even if neither clients nor competitors seem to be active on Twitter, don’t decide to dismiss the value of the tool until you’ve searched for people that inspire you and that you can learn from. Twitter is an excellent resource for broadening your skills and knowledge. There are many people happy to share their thoughts and expertise on Twitter. It also provides an opportunity to keep in touch with networking colleagues and business people from your community. Communicating with them outside your usual encounters could be helpful in keeping you on their radar for when a great business opportunity arises.
If you discover that some of your clients or competitors already use the tool, take note of:
Social media, not selling media
• Who is tweeting? • What are they tweeting about and how often? • Who are they talking to? • Who is talking about them? (Using the search bar on Twitter you can find tweets that reference them. Place a hash tag before their business name to see if they are at the centre of any discussions.) • What relationships they are forming? • Who are they following and who’s following them? Within a few hours you should know whether Twitter is an appropriate tool for you and your business. If your competitors are regularly tweeting interesting information and tips to their followers and engaging in worthwhile
Twitter is without doubt a fantastic and free marketing tool if you use it intelligently. It provides a quick and easy mechanism for making people aware of the products or services that you offer. But Twitter should not be viewed purely as an advertising vehicle. It is a social media channel and if you simply pump out messages promoting your products or services, you will fail to attract many followers and could even end up being blocked by other users. To use the tool effectively you really need to embrace the rationale behind Twitter. Join in with conversations; share your own expertise and promote the expertise and resources of others. Twitter provides the means to build relationships and this important aspect of marketing your business should not be overlooked.

SOCIAL MEDIA CIRCLES There are so many options when it comes to promoting your organisation through social media. Here, Dan Purchase from digital design company BritWeb runs through the list of options and explains the pros and cons depending on the nature of your business
business | 97
You’ve probably been told you should integrate social media into your marketing strategy. There’s no doubt that when used properly, platforms like Facebook, Twitter and so on are powerful communication tools. They can help boost your visibility online, raise brand awareness and even improve your search engine rankings. However, not every social media website will be suitable for your business. Here’s what you need to know.
Facebook Facebook is a major player in the social media world. Users can post and share lots of different types of content, businesses can set up a dedicated ‘Page’ and there’s even the facility to post adverts. In fact, over one million businesses are currently advertising on Facebook. There are many ways your business can engage with followers on Facebook – from running competitions to posting images and videos. Unfortunately, you need to gain a following first for people to see your content. To encourage people to give your Page a thumbs up, make it worth their while by regularly posting interesting and relevant content. If your business set-up is B2B, Facebook might not to be the best use of your valuable time, although there are great local community pages that are often worth interacting with via a business page.
Twitter The fantastic thing about Twitter is that it allows you to join in and follow real-time conversations with users – not just the people who follow you but everyone on Twitter. From celebrities and journalists to industry experts and brands, everyone has 140 characters to share, converse and inspire with. Nearly every type of business can benefit by being on Twitter. Whether you’re using it to quickly address customer issues or regularly broadcasting news, there are many ways Twitter can be utilised. Remember, it should always be a two-way conversation – don’t bore followers with selfpromotional tweets.
LinkedIn LinkedIn is a fantastic business-oriented social platform. It’s a must for all B2B companies to have a presence but it really comes into it’s own when used by the individual. Use its advanced search tool to identify the actual people you need to connect with to instigate commercial opportunities, join useful business related groups and use it to gather opinion or present yourself as an expert in your field. Use personalised invites and tailor requests individually every time.
98 | FINE SUSSEX
Pinterest Pinterest is a virtual pin board for collecting and curating images and video from around the web. These ‘pins’ are organised on boards, which you can name, invite others to pin on or hide from public view. You can also comment on and ‘like’ other people’s pins. As Pinterest is a visual platform, it’s extremely valuable for lifestyle brands or businesses with a lot of visual content like ecommerce websites. However, like with all social media, don’t just promote your own content – involve other users by re-pinning and commenting on their pins and boards too. Craft marketplace Etsy engages users very well by regularly inviting shop owners to create their own boards.
Instagram This popular photo-sharing app lets brands and businesses break free from web browsers and, quite literally, go mobile. What differentiates Instagram from other photo-apps is that it allows users to add filters to their images then share them with each other. From the point of view of a business, Instagram provides an excellent opportunity for engaging followers by crowd-sourcing (obtaining services, ideas, or content from an online community) content and creating interactive experiences. Like Pinterest, businesses that sell products do extremely well on this social media platform. Nike, Starbucks and Topshop are some of the most followed brands, with well over one million followers each. However, it’s not just the products that are popular but the lifestyle they’re associated with. Rather than posting pictures of your products or facilities, encourage users to share their own experiences. Social media is first and foremost a way to interact with people. Whichever platform you decide is best for your business, use it to start conversations, rather than just promoting yourself. All the benefits of social media that were mentioned at the beginning will be achieved if you put real people first.

how to keep your
SUMMER GLOW Cold weather and central heating can play havoc with our skin. Keep your complexion clear, soft and protected this winter with the following advice from Bravura London founder Amanda Elias
100 | FINE SUSSEX
Looking good | 101
102 | FINE SUSSEX
Keeping that summer glow during the winter is very easy to manage and is much safer than baking yourself under the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. Firstly, exfoliate. Our skin is continuously regenerating itself but the top layer of dead skin sometimes needs a little help to shed. Dull skin looks grey and unhealthy and doesn’t reflect the light as well as healthy, new skin. Using products containing alpha hydroxy acids can help do break down the bond holding the dead skin on to the surface. Or for an easy exfoliating treatment that can be used on both the face and body, try Bravura’s Dermaflannel.
powder that mimics the softest most forgiving light and reveals your brightest complexion. I lightly dust all over my skin and then apply more to my cheek bones, shoulder blades and collarbone.
Having a tan all year round is very easy to achieve thanks to the large range of fake tans available on the market. I love Cocoa Brown’s 1 HOUR TAN. It goes on easily and smells amazing! Leave it for one hour for a light tan or three hours for a darker tan. No more sleeping in your tan and ruining your bed sheets. For a more natural look, your tan should be lighter than it would normally be in the summer. Using a highlighter on your skin can give the appearance of a sunlight glow even on the dullest days. Highlight areas that the sun would normally touch such as the top of your cheekbones, your collarbones and your shoulders. My favourite powder is Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light, a soft, sheer lavender pink
Have a make-over. It may not sound like much but a new eye shadow or lipstick can really make a big difference to your appearance, brightening your appearance can help to brighten your mood.
Because there is less moisture in the air during the winter, make sure you use a moisturiser that is nourishing but also suitable for your skin type. Look out for ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerine, Lactic Acid, Aloe Vera and Urea in your moisturiser which are Humectants, meaning it binds moisture to the skin. Don’t forget your hands and feet.
As tempting as hot baths and showers are, they can really dry out the skin. Have a warm bath or shower, moisturise and then snuggle up in your PJs to keep warm. No creams will ever emulate the results that a good night’s sleep will give. Make sure you get at least seven hours sleep every night and your skin will naturally look more healthy and radiant. SAVE YOUR SIGHT Consultant ophthalmologist Nishani Amerasinghe from the Nuffield Hospital in Chichester gives us the facts about glaucoma and explains what you can do to give yourself the best chance of managing the disease What does your role involve? I’m a consultant ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist so I see and treat patients with problems related to their eyes. I spend my time diagnosing and managing patients in clinics as well as performing surgery.
What are the main problems with the eyes that you treat? Generally speaking I deal with glaucoma (a cause of deteriorating vision) and cataracts. Patients have often come to me following a referral from their optician.
Is there such a thing as a typical patient for you? The patient I see is usually older, mainly because increasing age is a risk factor in many common sight problems. About 10 per cent of the over 75s will have glaucoma to some extent.
What happens to someone’s sight if they have glaucoma? Glaucoma happens as a result of damage to the optic nerve, which takes visual messages of what we see, from the eye to the brain. It tends to occur as we age and affects the peripheral vision, that is what you see from the sides, and progresses slowly.
Is there a particular group of patients who get diagnosed with glaucoma? Strictly speaking, anyone could be affected by glaucoma. It is most common in older people and 10 per cent of the over 75 age group will have the disease to some degree.
What is the process of seeing a specialist or Ophthalmologist? The most common route to seeing a specialist like myself would be through a recommendation from a patient’s optician. They are the ‘gatekeepers’ to this type of
problem and they are usually the first to detect it.
How often should people go to see an optician? I would recommend all adults going to an optician for a regular check up every two years. This means that if there are signs of glaucoma detected, we can address it early. If you have a family history, you can have for a free eye test once you reach the age of 40.
Does early diagnosis mean it can be cured? Glaucoma is a progressive disease that cannot be cured but its progression can be stopped. Therefore it is beneficial to get early diagnosis. With that, we can put measures in place to ensure a patient can continue with functional sight for the rest of their life – it’s a manageable disease if caught early.
What is the treatment for glaucoma? If it’s detected early enough, usual treatment would involve medication (usually eye drops), laser treatment or surgery are also options. It all depends on the severity of the case.
Are there any causes or risk factors associated with glaucoma? There is no known single cause of glaucoma. But we do know that a family history is a risk factor. Age is also plays a risk factor, as well as being long or short sighted.
Where did you train and how long have you been practicing? I’ve been practicing for about 13 years. I trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in Paddington. I have done most of my ophthalmology training in Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and Bournemouth. I also spent two years doing a research fellowship in glaucoma in Singapore as well a clinical fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Consultant ophthalmologist Nishani Amerasinghe will be holding a free talk open to the public on Glaucoma on the 5 November at 7pm at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital. Come along and learn everything you need to know about Glaucoma. Spaces are limited please call 01243 887572 to book your place.

LOOK AFTER Getting a check-up for your hearing should be as common as visiting the optician or dentist for people of a certain age, says Jonathan Ormerod RHAD, FSHAA of the Horsham Hearing Centre
YOUR HEARING
A hearing test has now become a regular health check for many people over the age of 50. Just like looking after your eyes and your teeth, a regular hearing check can highlight any hearing problems and enable you to do something about them. Hearing loss is a very common complaint and affects around one in seven of the population. It can affect not just you, but your family and friends too. Most hearing loss is easily rectified and modern technology can really enhance your quality of life. At the Horsham Hearing Centre, experienced hearing aid audiologists will guide you through the process and offer impartial advice on potential solutions.
is used to determine if any problems exist in the bones of the middle ear or with the ear drum itself. Sometimes it may be necessary to carry out further tests to obtain more detail and this may take a little longer. Once the tests have been completed, we will explain the results to you in the context of any hearing difficulties you may be experiencing. You will be given a detailed description of the type and level of hearing loss and the likely reasons for you having the loss. We will then explain what options are available to assist with your hearing and how best to proceed. Allow plenty of time to be sure you can discuss the results, ask any questions you may have and perhaps have a demonstration of what a modern hearing aid can do. At the Horsham Hearing Centre we typically allow 60 to 90 minutes for the appointment.
When you arrive for an initial consultation, we will ask you about problems you may have experienced with your hearing, such as difficulty hearing in noisy situations or when watching TV. Try to give some thought to any problems you’ve been having, and in what situations, before arriving for the test. It can also be helpful to bring a family member or friend along with you. They are often more aware of the areas of difficulty than you may be yourself and can provide moral support. You will be asked about relevant medical history, including problems such as tinnitus, pain in the ears, balance problems and so on. Before conducting the test, we will then examine your ears (a process known as otoscopy) to check for excessive wax, conditions that may require medical attention or factors that may influence the hearing test. You can also see inside your own ears on a large screen to better understand what we are looking for. The hearing test itself typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes. It consists of a series of tones played through headphones (one ear at a time) - you simply press a button each time you hear a tone. The tests are conducted over a range of frequencies, from low pitch to high pitch, and at different loudness settings in order to find the quietest sound that you can hear at each pitch. A second test, using a different type of headset,
The most common type of hearing loss, known as presbyacusis, is age related and it typically affects both ears to a similar extent. Many sufferers experience this as a loss of clarity and have told us it “sounds like everybody mumbles”, or “it’s difficult to hear in noisy places or in groups of people”. This type of problem is usually due to difficulty in hearing high pitch sounds, particularly consonants such as “f” or “s”. Female voices or children’s voices can be particularly difficult to hear. There are of course many other possible causes of hearing problems. If you are experiencing difficulty in hearing it is very important to have it properly investigated. It may simply be due to a build up of wax, or it may be due to the normal ageing process of the ears. In very rare cases it may be something that warrants medical investigation or treatment and we will advise you of this. Horsham Hearing Centre is offering readers of Fine Sussex a complimentary hearing assessment including a full consultation, hearing test and advice on hearing aids. To book an appointment call Linzi Riggall on 01403 218700 or email Horsham@ hearcentres.com. For more information go to hearcentres.co.uk

for Christmas
s k y a r r a d p s is ready when you are
Find out why you can get Christmas sorted in one place – following new stock, more floor space and a rather special new wrapping service At Sparks Yard, they understand that Christmas starts at different times for different people. That is why they will be ready when you are. As of 3 October the shop will be launching its new Christmas floor at the top of the fabulous building in Arundel. The whole new floor will be totally dedicated to Christmas decorations, gifts, party-ware and snugly winter accessories – with plenty more space this year to dedicate to the season to be jolly. Many customers will be really organised and love to get started on their Christmas shopping as soon as possible - especially if they have to post Christmas cards and gifts overseas. But at Sparks Yard they also know that it is important to still have a great choice of gifts for more ‘last minute’ shoppers. As well as how handy it is to be open until 5pm on Christmas Eve! As if that weren’t enough, they are offering a great new service this year in the form of Christmas gift wrapping in store. They will take your gifts that have been bought in their shops and wrap and gift bag them ready to pop straight under the tree. They are planning to share the

proceeds of this service with Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. The new floor will also see the relocation of the toy store, taking advantage of having much more space. This year owners Holly and Andy are hoping to have a toy section that Santa’s elves would be proud of, stocking fillers and gifts galore. This summer has seen a major shift in the way that Sparks Yard is laid out with more space given over to extra seating for its very popular coffee bar. Holly told Fine Sussex: “We were getting so busy that we never had enough seats in the coffee bar. We have now added 12 extra seats and it has made such a difference. There is more space for prams and buggies and a quiet area for people to sit and work using our free Wi-Fi while enjoying our delicious coffee. The ground floor has been opened up and displays are much clearer. Finally we are able to really show off just how fabulous our stock is, it isn’t so overcrowded and you can actually see the items shine! We have been working so hard this year to get Sparks Yard looking fresh and bright again, after 10 years you no longer see what is in front of you, but now we are looking with fresh eyes and with great excitement about our future plans.’ It is no secret that Holly and Andy have plans to expand the business with the relocation of the coffee bar to the top floor in the new year, Andy added: “We are so excited about what the future holds for Sparks Yard. We are 10 years old this year but we are constantly evolving. This year will see the biggest changes that we have made in a long time and the whole team is buzzing! We can’t wait to put all of our plans into action.” Visit Sparks Yard on Tarrant Street, Arundel or go to sparksyard.com

T
here are lots of different things to think about when designing a new bathroom, not least the choice of bath. Where do you start? Acrylic or steel should be the first question, and indeed this was a question put to me just last week from clients whose bathroom we were redesigning. There is little difference in the bathing experience between the two. Steels baths however cost more due to the high price of moulding tools. This also means there is less choice. Acrylic is easier to mould and costs less to manufacture, meaning there
is a great deal more choice in design. As always quality is essential – a good quality steel bath will be finished with a hardwearing enamel surface, which will last for many years. If it should be damaged it will need a professional to take care of it and in some cases the bath may need replacing. Likewise a good quality acrylic bath will last a long time, and if scratches should appear they can easily be polished out with a mild buffing agent. Usually the size and shape of your bathroom will dictate the type of bath you will buy.

A single ended bath has taps at one end, which means you only have one end to use as a back rest. If you want to share your bath with someone else, then a double-ended bath will make the experience a lot more comfortable. Very often double-ended baths are larger, so if you are bathing alone, that means a whole lot more space to relax in. Shower baths are popular, especially if your bathroom is a bit on the small side. A shower bath is usually described as being either P shaped or L shaped – to accommodate bathing and showering. In a whirlpool bath, water is drawn from the bath and forced back in through whirlpool jets. The result is a powerful, invigorating effervescence throughout the water, also known as hydrotherapy. To make the final decision it would be a good idea to measure your bathroom. Work out how much wall space you have, not forgetting everything else that has to fit in the bathroom, and be realistic - you don’t want to end up with a bathroom that looks cramped and small. Then have some fun shopping!

Prints by Eric Ravilious
Pallant House Gallery Chichester 12 October to 8 December 2013 Pallant house Gallery in Chichester presents an exhibition of prints by the celebrated British artist and designer, Eric Ravilious (1903-42). A major figure in the history of early 20th-century British art, Ravilious was one of Britain’s most popular and versatile artists of the 1930s, producing distinctive watercolours, lithographs, and graphics for companies such as London Transport and ceramics for Wedgwood which are hugely evocative of the era. His work is rooted in
the landscape of pre-war and early wartime England, particularly the South Downs in Sussex, where he grew up. Featuring loans from public collections such as the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden and the Towner in Eastbourne, which are both known for their significant holdings of the artist’s work, the exhibition also features prints, ceramics and ephemera from a number of private collections, giving a fresh insight into Ravilious’ versatility as an artist.
