CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOWS & DOORS FOR YOUR HOME

W

alk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively, whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong it is blindingly obvious – but when they have been chosen well, or the original windows and doors preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. So what should you consider when investing in new Timber Windows? For many homeowners, restoring the integrity of the original structure is paramount. When choosing windows and doors to faithfully replicate the appearance of the building in its heyday it is essential to study the size of the window sections, ensuring that they match the proportions of the original frames as closely as possible. Deep bottom rails, slim meeting styles and fine glazing bars are important details. In casement windows non-opening elements should be glazed with dummy sashes to ensure balanced sightlines. The amount of glass area is important and overly bulky sections should be avoided. The Timber WIndows range provides great dimensional flexibility and a wide range of choices to ensure traditional aesthetics are preserved, whilst providing 21st century levels of comfort, security and performance. Many options also exist to really break down the boundaries between the house and outdoor space, letting light flood in, such as the addition of a folding sliding door or a smooth running patio door. Time was when every window frame in sight was white. Today the choice of factory applied colours and finishes available adds a level of choice our predecessors would envy. With natural timber finishes, subtle shades of cream, green, blue and grey, as well as elegant black, the Timber Windows colour palette can help to highlight or to blend in. Multiple colours are also possible, with the option to finish the insides of your windows and doors differently from the outsides. We can also colour match to leading, quality paint brands to complement your interior colour scheme. Balancing the style, colour and choice of windows and doors appropriately all adds up to what our trans-Atlantic cousins call 'curb appeal' - a pleasing visual aspect for neighbours, passers-by and even future purchasers. This is the art and hallmark of a job well done. Timber Windows would very much welcome the opportunity to work with you, enabling you to enhance the value and beauty of your home through the addition of well-chosen timber windows and doors. Property and lettings expert Leaders on the benefits of a buy-to-let property in Sussex as well as detailed information on the areas in which you might consider buying

W

ith interest rates at a record low and the stock market as volatile as ever, many people with capital are looking for the best place to put their money. Buying residential property to let has long been one of the safest and best performing investments, according to lettings specialist Leaders, which was established in Sussex over 30 years ago by the co-founder of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA). Buy-to-let combines the benefits of a monthly income with capital appreciation over the longterm and appeals to many investors looking for a solid long-term investment. A new report issued by the Wriglesworth Consultancy shows that buy-to-let has produced returns of over 1,200 per cent since 1996. Overall, since the launch of buy-to-let mortgages 18 years ago, buy-to-let has provided average returns that easily outstrip those of other major asset classes. Sussex offers some fantastic opportunities for investors, and with 15 long-established branches across the county, Leaders are able to offer detailed advice on the best areas for buy-to-let. “Demand for good quality rental property is at an all-time high across Sussex and has been for some time,” says Leaders’

Sussex regional director, Jane Wilkinson. “The high deposits needed for mortgages, along with the need for people to be flexible for work, means that many young professionals and families are choosing to rent. We are also seeing people renting for longer, which means greater security for landlords”. Overall there is a shortage of good quality property available to rent in Sussex and with demand outstripping supply, rents have remained strong. Landlords are benefitting from a steady rental income and a stable market. Alongside this, investors can expect good capital gains over the medium to long term which makes buy-to-let an attractive investment compared with others. Wilkinson added: “The key to a successful investment is choosing the right property in the right location. Every town and city has a different market with different opportunities and potential pitfalls. Our experienced branch managers know the areas they cover better than anyone and are happy to give detailed and impartial advice on how to make the best of local market conditions, now and in the future. Typically, our landlords are achieving yields of five to seven per cent across Sussex, depending on the exact location, type and presentation of their property.”

Hot spots for investment properties Brighton & Hove Brighton & Hove has long been popular with tenants and demand for all types of property in the City remains high. There is not enough available to satisfy the high demand and good quality, well-presented flats and houses in the right locations let extremely quickly. Fortunately there are a number of opportunities for investors in and around the city with a host of new housing developments springing up, including a proposed site in Ovingdean and Woodingdean for 315 homes to be built, and the Super B at Brighton station near completion, which includes one and twobedroom apartments that will rent from around £1100 up to £1800 per month. Eastbourne Known as the Sunshine Coast, people are attracted to Eastbourne by the more tranquil pace of life, along with a seafront location and easy access to the South Downs National Park. There is an active rental market here, and one and two bedroom garden flats are always in demand, as are Victorian terraced houses for families.

18 | FINE SUSSEX

Worthing Worthing’s coastal position, access to Brighton and London, schools, shops and busy nightlife appeals to renters, especially young professionals and families. All types of property are in high demand here, particularly good quality properties close to the town centre, seafront and mainline station, and family homes. Rustington, Littlehampton and Bognor Being by the seaside with plenty of good shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants, parks and local amenities, and with their proximity and transport links to places like Chichester, Horsham, Brighton, Crawley, Gatwick and London, these towns have become increasingly popular with people who work in those areas but want to live somewhere more affordable. In Littlehampton demand is very high for one-bedroom flats close to the town centre, and Rustington, with its excellent schools, sees ongoing demand for family homes. Bognor has high demand for one and two bedroom flats close to the town centre. There are good

opportunities for investors here, with a number of new developments springing up, offering a range of flats and houses to purchase.

Chichester Historic Chichester attracts people with its array of shops, amenities and excellent schools. Most areas in and around Chichester see strong demand from tenants, but particularly the town centre where modern two and three bedroom flats and houses can achieve yields of 5 per cent or more. New builds such as Canal Walk in Chichester and Graylingwell Park are proving popular with investors. Mid Sussex Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill both enjoy thriving rental markets. With good transport links to London, Gatwick, Heathrow and Brighton, their proximity to the beautiful Sussex countryside, and excellent choice of private and state schools, they appeal to professionals, families and older people. All types of property in Mid Sussex are in high demand, from one-bedroom flats to larger family homes and there are several developments underway in the area, including the extension of Bolnore Village and the continued development of Wood Side and St Francis Park near Southdowns Park. Horsham Horsham is a pleasant historical market town with lots of great amenities for families, including a cinema, theatre, sports centre, parks and restaurants. All property types are in demand, with two-bedroom houses close to the town centre generally the most popular. The rent range for investors to aim for is £650 to £1100 per month as this is where there is strongest demand. Horsham has a number of large new developments in the pipeline with properties ranging from one-bedroom luxury

apartments to four and five-bedroom family homes, including Wickhurst Green and Great Oaks at Broadbridge Heath. East Grinstead East Grinstead is an affluent, thriving and rapidly growing town with a historic centre and hundreds of sprawling acres on its doorstep. Standards of property to rent in East Grinstead are high and there is a wide choice, including new build apartments in the town centre and larger properties with extensive grounds in the surrounding areas such as Forest Row and Dorman’s Park. Crawley With its easy access to Gatwick and good employment prospects, Crawley sees consistently strong demand. Two-bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom flats close to the town centre are most sought after by tenants. There is also a large development of around 3000 new homes taking place between Crawley and Horsham called Kilnwood Vale which is likely to prove popular. A number of Leaders branches now offer a sales service and have investment properties available to buy, some of which have tenants already in place so investors can start receiving rent the day their purchase completes. Leaders are local letting experts, backed by the UK’s largest independently owned letting specialist. Established by the co-founder of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) in 1983, Leaders provides financial probity and rigorous standards in letting and property management. Membership of ARLA, SAFEagent and The Property Ombudsman gives landlords and tenants complete peace of mind. For more information please visit www.leaders.co.uk To help prospective investors make the most of Sussex’s thriving rental market, Leaders is delighted to have teamed up with premier mortgage broker, Sussex-based All Types of Mortgages (AToM). AToM provides clear, honest and impartial advice to help investors obtain the right mortgage for their investment needs. For more information go to leaders.atomltd. co.uk/mortgages

Small colour pops will not only update your bathroom style but transport it firmly into the summer season – try the Joyce Collection by Villeroy & Boch

N

ow is the time for our thoughts about refreshing our home to turn to bathrooms. There are a number of reasons but one of the best I can think of is that we’re off to far flung, luxurious places, where the bathrooms are nothing short of exquisite. They are clean, crisp, light, bright and cool – in both senses of the word. The showers revive us, the towels comfort us and the fragrances from all those invigorating lotions and gels cleanse our body and clear our mind. It’s a time to relax and it’s also a feeling we can easily replicate all year round once we land back on planet earth. David Dilaj at West One Bathrooms told Fine Sussex: “Light, bright colours will definitely bring more life to any room, in particular the bathroom where size can often be an issue. To lighten and brighten a bathroom we recommend incorporating three elements to your bathroom – light, colour, and texture. One, or a combination of all three of these will bring seasonal depth to a space, and if done correctly you can design your bathroom so it looks and feels like summer all year round.” Lighting is arguably most important in your bathroom, as there is often very little natural light coming in. But as David points out, there is no shortage of options to allow you to replicate that stunning glow you had on holiday. “In an ideal world all bathrooms would have at least one source of natural light, however as many new-builds and

apartments don’t offer us that luxury, we are left with experimenting with our indoor lighting scheme to brighten and expand the space. To maximise reflective surfaces I highly recommend hampshirelight.net for imaginative and affordable lighting solutions.” Accessorising is a great way to give your bathroom a more seasonal feel. “Whether you match furniture with sanitaryware or have a uniform accessories theme, small colour pops will not only update your bathroom style but transport it firmly into the summer season – try the Joyce Collection by Villeroy & Boch which comes with changeable elements in several colours”, David added. If bright colours are not your thing and you prefer a more muted and sophisticated palette, large scale tiles are the perfect way to open up your bathroom and create lightreflecting surfaces for a brighter feeling. An old classic

W

hen a sophisticated New Yorker needed refreshment on a hot summer’s day in the year 1930, he would take the time to enjoy a homemade lemonade in the Hamptons. Back then, the required ‘fizz’ was traditionally added with the help of a Sparklets New York Soda Siphon - manufactured on 46th St, Manhattan. Meanwhile the fresh exotic fruit came from all over the world. Die Siphon Manufaktur has been reviving this long lost tradition since 2011. A small team based in Munich meticulously restores these unique soda siphon - each one a 1930s original - and helps them regain their former glory. The glass bottles of these soda siphons were mouth-blown in the renowned glass factories of former Czechoslovakia between 1930 and 1940. The final product was then assembled in New York to create the classic Sparklets New York Soda Siphon

with its high grade metal wiring and chrome applications. While seltzer water produced by a soda siphon is very fizzy, the carbonisation is finer and more harmonic than one would find in bottled sparkling water. This particular quality balances any lemonade and creates a refreshing beverage. A soda siphon and its compatible CO2 bulb will turn one litre of tab water into fizzy seltzer within a few moments. And because a soda siphon will retain its pressure the user can enjoy a fresh glass of seltzer for days after. Perhaps Die Siphon Manufaktur cannot take us back to the New York of 1930, but a hand restored Sparklets New York Soda Siphon can act as a distinct reminder of this golden era; a piece of authentic history for homes and bars worldwide.

The value of investments and income arising from them may fall as well as rise and you might get back less than you originally invested. Rathbone Investment Management Limited is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

A t tisn’t a cthekway i ntogNumber b u s10i n e s s Greg Mahon, from Rathbone Investment Management, discusses the effects the three main political parties are having on the economy as they jostle for position before next year’s election

N

ext May, voters will face the biggest divergence in economic policies between the main parties for over 30 years. Following the apparent popularity of his ‘cost of living’ campaign on energy prices, Ed Miliband has attacked high street banks, rail companies and private landlords among others as well as vigorously opposing Pfizer’s bid for AstraZeneca. His rhetoric is designed to appeal and some of it may even have merit, but the overall effect is to shift Labour sharply to the left. Mr Miliband wants “to make markets work in the public interest”, revealing an upfront distrust that is markedly different from Labour’s position over the last three decades. He is quickly becoming the most left-wing Labour leader since Michael Foot. Neil Kinnock was no Blairite, but he was desperate to rescue Labour from the excesses of socialism and started the process of reform that eventually led to the party’s landslide victory in 1997. At that election, it had a clear and coherent strategy to win the centre ground with a programme of bold social policies. In contrast, its economic policies were deliberately benign and uncontroversial.

The Conservatives’ policies are pragmatic. They have stuck to their guns on reducing the deficit. However, understanding the need to support business, the UK now has the joint lowest corporation tax in the G20

The new government did impose a £5bn windfall tax on the privatised utilities (including airports, telecoms and rail companies) which aimed to “put right the bad deal which customers and taxpayers got from privatisation” and which was used to fund the New Deal welfare-to-work programme. This was quite radical, but it was also well-flagged, sensibly-calculated and only had a limited impact on the sectors concerned. Most importantly, it wasn’t applicable to the vast majority of companies. In contrast, Mr Miliband’s approach appears unrestricted and his next attack could be on any sector – the only requirement is that he thinks it makes too much profit from the segment of voters that he is targeting that week. Exploiting the income squeeze that has resulted from wages failing to keep pace with inflation, Mr Miliband’s ‘cost of living’ campaign advocates significant government intervention in the economy. For the first time in years, there is talk

by mainstream politicians of governmentimposed price controls and even of nationalising public companies. This creates a difficult environment for investors and, given the uncertainty about the outcome of the election, there is a risk that global capital could move elsewhere. This may seem alarmist, but the travails of the French economy under President Hollande demonstrate how investors can quickly find alternative homes for their capital. Very few people would advocate completely free markets – a degree of regulation is necessary to prevent abuses. Yet significant government intervention has been shown not to work many times, not least because politicians and civil servants don’t know better than the rest of us. There are often unforeseen consequences that distort the market and lead to more pain for ‘hardworking families’ than the original problem. Perhaps tempered by the experience of government, the Liberal Democrats seem to understand this. Vince Cable can sound left-wing, but his party has limited itself to smaller scale intervention on tax and employment rights rather than the grand ‘government knows best’ approach favoured by Mr Miliband. Over time, however, such small-scale intervention adds up and makes British business uncompetitive. Their record may be encouraging, but the Liberal Democrats set alarm bells ringing about their attitude to wealth through repeated talk of a mansion tax. It is also unclear how they would behave in a Lib-Lab coalition and whether the combination of ‘Red Ed’, Ed Balls and Vince Cable would result in a less business-friendly environment. In contrast, the Conservatives’ policies are pragmatic. They have stuck to their guns on reducing the deficit, eschewing popular income tax cuts. However, understanding the need to support business, the UK now has the joint lowest corporation tax in the G20. They are promoting British companies abroad and making it easier to do business at home. As the recovery shows, lower taxes and increased liberalisation are good for business and employment, and opinion polls suggest that voters understand this. A West Sussex mum is celebrating after achieving a life-long dream with the publication of her first novel

J

uliet West wrote ‘Before the Fall’ over several years while juggling a part-time job and a busy family life with three children. The novel, which is set in London during the First World War, is inspired by real events and tells the story of Hannah Loxwood, a young soldier’s wife who falls in love with another man while her husband is away fighting. Published on May 22, the book has already received glowing reviews from bestselling authors. Booker Prize-longlisted author Alison MacLeod has praised the novel as ‘powerful and poignant,’ while US novelist Ann Weisgarber described the book as ‘an astonishing literary achievement.’ West first came across the heartbreaking true story nearly 18 years ago while working as a

journalist in London. In 2010 she finally sat down to write the novel, and says she was ‘amazed and delighted’ when publisher Pan Macmillan offered her a book deal. “I’m an avid reader and always dreamt of writing fiction. But I found it hard to get started, so I joined Horsham Writers’ Circle for inspiration and advice, and later took an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University. Writing the first draft was a real challenge – it was a huge time investment with absolutely no guarantee that the book would be published. But I kept going because I wanted so much to tell Hannah’s story. It has haunted me for many, many years, so I was determined to write the book, even if no-one ever read it!” Juliet has signed a two-book deal with Pan Macmillan and is now busy working on her second novel. P

arham has always been a well-loved family home, and only three families have lived here since its foundation stone was laid in 1577. Bought in 1922 by the Hon. Clive Pearson and his wife, Alicia, they found it in a sad state of repair and together revived and restored it with great sensitivity and care. They opened the doors to the public in 1948 and followed by their daughter Veronica Tritton, spent more than 60 years carefully restoring it. They filled the house with a sensitively chosen collection of furniture, paintings and textiles and also bought back items which had originally been in it. What they created at Parham is a rare survival of mid 20th century connoisseurship within a major Elizabethan house. Sir Simon Jenkins (author, editor and chairman of the National Trust since 2008) has placed Parham in his top 20 houses (“England’s Thousand Best Houses”, 2003) and referred to it as a ‘house of magic’. Now owned by a charitable trust, Veronica Tritton’s great-niece, Lady Emma Barnard, is ‘chatelaine’ of Parham

today and lives in the house with her husband and children. Each year Parham hosts a calendar of events for visitors to enjoy and this year these include the Sussex Guild ‘Contemporary Craft Show’ on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June. Over 30 Sussex-based designers & makers of contemporary and traditional crafts will be at Parham to show and sell their products including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewellery, metalwork, silversmithing, textiles and woodwork. Commented Lady Emma Barnard, chatelaine of Parham, “We are delighted that so many very talented Sussex Guild members are coming to Parham again this year. The beautiful objects they produce, both for display and for sale, always delight and inspire our visitors. I know this year will be no exception.” For more information on Parham and its events, please visit parhaminsussex.co.uk or telephone 01903 742021 or email: enquiries@ parhaminsussex.co.uk.

in july, july Parham will be hosting its “21ST Annual Garden Weekend” on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th. This hugely popular Garden Weekend will be officially opened in its 21ts year by the celebrity TV presenter, Joe Swift, from BBC2s Gardeners’ World programme. The Garden Weekend attracts a wide spectrum of quality specialist nurseries and is one of the best garden weekends in the South East of England for viewing and buying really top quality plants for your garden. A new attraction for children will be a selection of Traditional Village Fair games to enjoy.

August Parham hosts its 3rd annual “Grow Your Own Festival” In August, on Sunday 17th August. Taking place in the summer holidays, the day is intended for visitors to come and learn about growing their own food – including fruit, vegetables, herbs and animals. Francis Quinn, the 2013 BBC2 Bake-Off programme winner is attending the event and will be running a baking and decorating demonstration. Pippa Greenwood, a plant ‘pathologist’, previous presenter on BBC2s Gardeners’ World and grow-your own expert, will also be attending the event and giving talks. The final event in the 2014 calendar is Parham’s “Autumn Foraging & Estate Life” event on Sunday 28th September. Set in the heart of its own ancient deer-park, the household at Parham would once have been selfsufficient from produce grown and reared on the estate. The event will include attendance by food and drink exhibitors, traditional woodland crafts, there will be guided deer spotting walks into Parham Park as well as fungi walks.

T

he most spectacular room in the house is on the top floor where the magnificent Long Gallery stretches for over 160ft and is the third longest in England. Its original use was for walking and recreation and even military drilling! Outside there is a beautiful four-acre 18th century walled garden which includes a vegetable garden and orchard and 1920s Wendy house; its spectacular mixed borders and greenhouse provide flowers and plants to decorate every room in the house – a tradition started by Mrs Pearson when Parham first opened to visitors. The adjoining Pleasure Grounds include a lake, specimen trees and a brick and turf maze and the house and gardens are surrounded by some 875 acres of agricultural and forestry land, including designated areas of Special Scientific Interest. The 300 acres of ancient deer park around the house contain fallow deer, with the descendants of the original herd first recorded in 1628.

doTELL How do I dive into a pool with style and grace? Lifeguard Jacob Priestley passes on some advice for making sure your dive into the pool on your next holiday is more fabulous than belly flop

46 | FINE SUSSEX

F

irstly, it’s a bit of an obvious one but accidents do happen, so make sure you are certain of the depth of the pool. Diving head first into the shallow end could bring your holiday to an abrupt end. So it helps if you know where the deep water is and is even better if you’ve been in the pool before and found your way around. Standing at the edge, mentally picture yourself diving. Imagine you do it beautifully, just like Tom Daley. Although most people (especially the boys) like to stride up to the water either walking or running and launch into the pool with one foot, you want to dive with a little more sophistication. So, stand with your toes touching the edge and feel the water. Put your feet together and your arms straight beside you.

Now, bend your knees and as you do so, swing your arms back behind your bottom, keeping them straight. Then it’s time for the leap. With all your might, push off from your toes and the ball of your feet forwards and upwards while bringing your straight arms all the way back so they pointing to the sky. Once your feet have left the edge of the pool, curve your spine as though you were doing a sit up. As you approach the water, straighten your body, keeping your hands above your head so they break the water first. Your aim is to be as straight up as you can be, with your feet now pointing to the sky by the time your fingers touch those glistening waters. And let’s not forget to point those beautifully pedicured toes so everyone can tell what a pro you are. And there you have it – no mortifying belly flop, no lost swim shorts or bikini top. Your dignity remains in tact and you can relish in the respect of your fellow hotel guests.

F e e l at h o m e Arundel House has been revitalised by its new owner and an accomplished head chef, so we went to take a look at a place where each customer is treated like a very special guest

A

new privately owned ‘restaurant with rooms’ has opened within an elegant 19th century townhouse in Arundel. Aptly named Arundel House, this is a place you can feel at home – and not just because you can climb a floor or two to your bedroom after dinner. It’s also because the ambience, service and style with which things are done makes you feel like a very special guest. Downstairs, the ground floor is occupied by the restaurant, an intimate experience, made all the more comforting by the fireplace, homely touches like a mirror and table lamps and wooden floors. In the evening, glassware reflects the warm lighting to create a twinkling glow – perfect for an evening with friends, family or something more romantic. Upstairs you will find five newly refurbished bedrooms (one of which is a split-level suite), making this house somewhere for more than just dinner – but a relaxing retreat. It’s also handy if you’ve decided to ditch the car and enjoy a bottle from the impressive wine list. At the helm is Kim Fishlock, a restaurateur with more than a decade’s experience managing restaurants in London. Kim is joined by Reuben Waller, her accomplished head chef who has worked at the likes of The Ivy, Christopher’s and trained under Nicole Dennis. They might seem like surprising credentials given the size and relaxed atmosphere at Arundel House. But

that’s exactly what Kim was hoping for. “I decided to come down from London to create a very unique place. Somewhere with excellent food and wine in a beautiful setting. I think we’ve achieved that. We’ve completely refurbished the building and every detail has been considered from the chairs to the plant pots on the front steps and Reuben’s menu is spectacular, filled with the freshest local ingredients – it’s just a stone’s throw from the castle too, so a really special way to spend an evening.” Customers can enjoy the a la carte menu during the evenings or a set menu for lunches ranging from £16.95. And as well as fine food and drinks, entertainment is also organised regularly. On the last Friday of every month, Julie Stardust, a West End singer, serenades patrons while they dine. It’s one of the most exciting restaurant and guesthouse launches to take place in Sussex in recent years. If it’s quality food and drink you value, blended with the glow of lamplight and comforting décor, you really will feel at home in this house. Arundel House is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 11pm and on Sundays from 11am to 4pm when a Sunday roast is available. Find the restaurant with rooms at 11 High Street. readers James Skillicorn, head of Juniors at Great Walstead School, looks at the past and present of teaching reading to young ones and explains how you can nurture your children to become more intelligent, inquisitive little bookworms

R

eading has been important for hundreds of years. No doubt it will remain important in the foreseeable future. Why is this? Through reading, children can: • More easily unlock their potential in all areas of school • Learn valuable life skills • Become more knowledgeable in a plethora of specific areas • Enter worlds that only exist in story • Develop their own writing skills • Spend hours of enjoyment and in conversation about books they have read Schools have long realised the importance of reading. Reading readiness is promoted in the early years by regular exposure to picture, story and information books. There then follows the careful crafting of phonics training, reading practice, guided reading, book talk and exposure to an ever-widening range of reading material. Children go on to look more closely at a variety of genres by different authors once reading proficiency is established. Genres include novels, poems, plays, biographies, correspondences, and non-fiction works. Throughout school days reading is celebrated in Book Week activities, dramatic performances and author visits to name a few. Examining literature is not done lightly in schools today. For example, as part of their reading lessons most eight-year-old children across the country will be discussing authors’

intentions, examining the roles of the narrators, making predictions, making connections with the works of other authors and with material found in the multi-media, examining a wide range of genres, as well as having fun with their reading. So what can parents do at home? Probably the most important thing that parents can do is to actively show their children that they love reading. By growing up in a house where literature is cherished and discussed, children learn to understand that reading is a multi-faceted and wonderful activity. Parents of very young children can help their children develop reading readiness by sharing books with them from babyhood. For some parents the stage of listening to children reading can be difficult to fit into a busy routine, but it pays huge dividends if this can be done. Surprisingly for some, this time of reading together can develop and strengthen bonds particularly if discussions about the reading material become a regular part of the process. It is also important for parents to understand that children take years to fully develop their reading skills and that some children take longer than others. Along the way some children may look at the reading process as hard work and so will need more nurturing and sensitive encouragement. Some children may develop a preference for a particular type of reading like non-fiction books, for example. Whilst this is to be praised and

Probably the most important thing that parents can do is to actively show their children that they love reading

endorsed, parents should also encourage these children not to ignore other types of literature. In a world where the pace of life is becoming ever faster, schools and homes can be sanctuaries where time is invested in enjoying reading together. The internet, computer games and the way films are repeatedly viewed on DVDs may well be factors that tempt children away from sustained reading. However, these influences are compensated for by the myriad beautifully written and illustrated books now available, and paradoxically by the fact that reading is an integral part of what children play and study on the internet. So it seems that reading will continue to be a vital part of life for many years to come. For more information on Great Walstead School go to greatwalstead.co.uk

A student who reads one minute a day builds an average vocabulary of 182,500 words; a student who reads twenty minutes a day acquires a whopping 3,650,000 words

why does

reading matter Building vocabulary, increasing cultural awareness and learning the discipline for a marathon not a sprint - Ms Suzanne Triviere, curriculum group leader for Communications and Languages, explains the benefits to our young ones of ‘real’ reading

Y

ou might be surprised at how often we at Burgess Hill School are asked the question ‘why does reading matter?’ And in the age of technology, when information is available at the press of a button (we don’t even need to remember things anymore) and when the world revolves around all-singing, alldancing multi-modal texts, the book does seem to be a bit of an anachronism. To be fair, children are still reading – on laptops, computers and iPad – because words are everywhere. But I am talking about real READING – the kind we did before technology arrived, the kind that involved curling up with a book in the garden on a hot sunny afternoon, or in front of the fire on a cold winter’s night, or under the covers after lights out. This is the kind of reading I remember from childhood, where I didn’t notice time passing and suddenly it was 1.00am and I knew the new school day was fast approaching. I did this recently with a wonderful novel by John Green called The Fault in our Stars (don’t let your children see the film coming out this summer until you have encouraged them to read the book!). I started at 10.00pm and finished at 4.00am and then lay in bed and thanked my lucky stars that it was the holidays and the next day’s damage would be minimal. Then I got to wondering how many of our children really read these days. And why does it matter? The favourite response is that children who read do better at school, even in Maths. They do. But did you know this? A student who reads one minute a day builds an average vocabulary of 182,500 words; a student who reads twenty minutes a day acquires a whopping 3,650,000 words. So reading builds vocabulary and helps students to understand their lessons better. That makes sense. It also helps them write; consistent exposure to challenging new vocabulary and sentence structures in well-written books helps them to express

themselves more precisely and in imaginative and original ways. Children’s cultural and general knowledge improves immeasurably if they have read stories from Africa or Australia or America, about people living now or a hundred years ago - like Sarah in The Little Princess, or four hundred years ago like Nathan who travelled back to Shakespeare’s time in The King of Shadows, or even six hundred years ago like Gabriel who becomes a travelling player in a Little Lower Than The Angels. There are thousands of great novels from which children can learn about our world. So reading lets us travel in time and space. And the characters we meet teach us about people too, and when we understand people, we understand how relationships work. That’s a life skill that can’t be bettered. So far, so good. But the most significant reason that reading a book is important is that it builds concentration. Most digital texts are bite-size, literal, factual and informative. They are written to be accessible to a wide audience and to communicate minimal detail. Vocabulary is limited. Sentences are straightforward. Paragraphs are short. Meaning is literal. In athletic terms – it’s a sprint, straight down the line. In contrast, reading (real reading) is a marathon requiring discipline and commitment, patience and stamina, persistence and endurance; a story may be fascinating and exciting and thought-provoking but it might also be hard and it might be challenging, because the language is rich and complex and the ideas sophisticated and profound – essentially, all the richness of the world crystallised in a great book. Didn’t Harry Potter prove that? Reading builds the essential skills needed for success in all walks of life. It really is that important. Farlington Sarah Welsh, Year 4 teacher and English specialist in the Prep School at Farlington, explains how they bring the subject to life and develop pupils’ reading and learning skills throughout their time there

A

t Farlington Prep School, our aim in English is to enable every girl to write in a variety of genres, showing an appreciation of well chosen vocabulary and an understanding of the importance of correct grammar. Our well stocked libraries offer a wide choice of reading matter, and the phonic approach is taught from the start and built on throughout the junior years. There are numerous opportunities for performing and practising speaking and listening skills, as well as learning by heart also features in events ranging from the nativity play to the Prep 5 and 6 production, with class assemblies a feature throughout each term. All of these initiatives reinforce the School’s ethos, ‘We educate for confidence’. Creative activities are planned to enable the girls to write from a wide spectrum of fiction and non-fiction texts. We successfully cover the main elements of the National Literacy Strategy and take it a step further, linking its themes across other curricular subjects and giving each task a real purpose. Handwriting is given a high priority in each year group with ink pens being used from Prep 3, but ICT also comes into its own for both longer and shorter pieces throughout the School. Carefully selected class novels are chosen in the Junior School to highlight language, structure and themes, while encouraging the

girls to include similar examples in their own work. We pride ourselves on introducing the girls to the works of Shakespeare, to instil a basic understanding and love of some of his plays, so that when they meet his works later in their Senior School career they have already had a positive experience. To this end in the Junior School, we look at A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet and, finally, Macbeth. This culminates in a trip to the Globe Theatre in Prep 6, where the girls can experience the words of the Bard, through an actor-lead workshop and then recite his lines on the actual stage, something that they will never forget. The girls learn to read using a wide range of books, not just from Reading Schemes, and have plenty of positive role models to look up to. We involve the girls from the Senior School in this, when our enthusiastic Year 9 and 10 girls come on a weekly basis to do ‘Paired Reading’ with the Pre-Prep pupils and Lower Juniors. As skills are taught, ‘learning to read’ turns into ‘reading to learn’ and the independence of knowing how to further one’s understanding is developed. By the end of the Prep School, we can certainly confirm that English lessons help to prove that, ‘We educate for confidence’. For more information go to farlingtonschool.net

on’t use a moisturiser that contains alcohol or perfume after shaving, use a gentle moisturiser. It’s essential to moisturise so that you rehydrate the skin. Shaving will strip the skin of its natural moisture. DO use a face gel/wash for oily, combination skin when cleansing – and a cream cleanser for dry skin. DON’T dry shave, this can seriously irritate and dry out the skin. Always use a shaving gel or oil. If you have sensitive skin, avoid any products that contain menthol. DO use any brand. When it comes to skincare, you don’t have to use just the brands targeted for men. If you have similar skin complaints to your girlfriend/mother/ sister ask to try their products to see how they work for you. DON’T rub or pick dry lips; apply a lip balm regularly throughout the day, a stick lip balm is easier and quicker to apply then the balms in little pots. DO exfoliate dry hands (remove the dry, dead skin) and then moisturise. Start by

mixing a little sugar and olive oil together and scrub your hands for roughly a minute, rinse off and then apply some of the olive oil in to your dry hands. For best results, gently warm the olive oil (warm not hot), apply to your hands and then cover your hands with a pair of cotton socks. Leave for a few hours or for even better results, leave on overnight. DO N’T leave sweaty skin after a workout. If you notice breakouts on your body after exercising, use a medicated wash to cleanse the skin as soon as possible after each session. If you don’t have time to shower, quickly wipe over your skin with a clean, cotton flannel and change out of your sweaty workout clothes. Always use a clean flannel and towel. Hearing&caring South East Hearing Care Centres is renowned for providing an exceptional standard of care. But as director Robert Davies points out, giving back to those in need is equally as important

Y

ou may have already experienced the high standard of care and treatment from South East Hearing Care Centres, and if you read the feature on the company in the last issue of Fine Sussex you’ll be up to speed on the advanced, invisible ‘Lyric’ hearing aids that they specialise in. Known colloquially as the ‘contact lens for the ears’, South East Hearing Care Centres are the only approved and accredited provider of Lyric hearing aids in West Sussex & Hampshire and the only group with four renowned ‘Lyric Centres.’ However whilst a high standard of care is imperative to the ethos of the company, director Robert Davies and his team go to great lengths to give time and money back into the community, in addition to various charities. Not content with just helping people hear better in the South East, Robert took his mission more than 4,000 miles away to a school for deaf children in a remote village in Kenya. Located on the lush green slopes of Mount Kenya in Murkurewe-ini District, the village stands at an impressive altitude of 1,495m, only one hour’s drive from the equator. Robert told Fine Sussex: “I met an MP from the region at an event here in the UK in 2002. He told me about the school where there were some 100 students – a mixture of deaf, partially deaf and full hearing children that relied almost completely on charitable funding and donations. I knew we could help, so we offered to support the facility.” It’s been a relationship that spans more than a decade. Robert visits the Reverend Muhoro School for the Deaf on an annual basis to staff a clinic as well as carry out a consultation and treatment service with equipment donated to the school. He added: “On my first visit in 2003 when we travelled out to donate an audiometer there were only six deaf boys; now the school is home to nearly 300 students, a mixture of boys and girls. It is something I am very passionate about. To help a school like this, where access to good audiologists or care for one’s hearing and ears is limited, is something I feel a responsibility to do. I was determined to do as much as I could for them.”

to victory and won the Over 40s race. Last year saw them take part in Horsham’s very own ‘Giraffe Trail’, organised by the Horsham Rotary Club. This event involved 50 giraffes, all bought, decorated and displayed by local business as part of a competition and children’s trail, prior to auctioning them off. South East Hearing Care Centre’s giraffe, named ‘Decibel’, was sold for £200 and therefore enabled the Centre to giving something back to the community at the core of their business, sponsoring Hearing Dog, Aslan, through his training until he becomes a companion and lifeline for someone with hearing difficulties. Robert said: “I may run a business, but I also believe I have a responsibility to use any means possible to help people who might deserve it or who may not be able to pay for hearing care themselves. That’s why we offer free fitting and follow-up appointments for eligible veteran servicemen and women. For as long as I’m here and we’re all able to provide high standards of hearing care, we will also be doing our bit for other people. We are not just about business, we really do care, and as much as we strive to provide hearing solutions for those already experiencing hearing loss, we have a mission to inform and educate, to prevent the latest generation creating their own hearing loss in a world full of new and unknown technology. the guide to

digital marke Run a business or work with online media in your job? Here’s the latest on how you can attract (and keep) customers in the age of digital

W

hilst there is still a place for traditional marketing, a business owner would be foolish not to recognise the need to really concentrate on all the elements that make up digital marketing. To put it in simple terms, digital marketing uses electronic media to promote and market brands and businesses. It encompasses many areas including SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), social media, email marketing and PPC (Pay Per Click). Here are five top tips for helping your business achieve digital success:

Have a plan Too many times have I seen business owners taking a haphazard, scatter gun approach to digital marketing. Before you even start, create a plan. Use Google Docs to build a spreadsheet calendar for the next six months, plot out your major company, industry and national events and plan your blogging, social media and email marketing strategies around this. Share this editable document with your team members so they can see what content is being published and who’s responsible for creating it. Map out tweets, Facebook posts or LinkedIn posts well in advance and then schedule them using tools such as HootSuite or TweetDeck. Know when you are going to send those emails and publish those blog posts well in advance.

Know your ideal customer and create content for them Do some research and ask yourself ‘who is my perfect client?’ Scale it down to an individual – picture a real person and you will find it easier to tailor your information to attract and engage them.

Don’t be a robot or talk about yourself too much Whilst you should have a plan and schedule standard information to tell the world, make sure you have access and time to be reactionary and reply to any comments or questions as quickly as possible. Remember the 80/20 rule of 20% promotional content, 80% non-promotional content. People get turned off if you only talk about yourself, your products or services. Users of social media don’t want to be sold to so create interesting content. Keep it relevant but find angles and share other information 80% of the time. Sparingly introduce them to your brand and offers once you’ve built up their trust.

Use paid advertising on social media Focussing on Facebook for this one, the social network recently made changes to business pages to reduce the amount of organic reach. What this means is all those well thought out, targeted and scheduled posts you are putting out could only be reaching 2% of your page’s fans! It’s true that Facebook is more likely to show your content if it includes images and video and also learns who interacts by commenting and liking the information and shows future posts more often. However, you need to use their paid options too to get the best from your efforts. You don’t have to break the bank. For as little as £1, you can boost a post to reach 1000’s of people. What’s more, you can choose who they appear to. Select people in a certain age range, within a particular distance from the town centre you operate from and with

specific interests. Being able to select from these demographics means that you can really reach out to the people that matter. You can choose from a variety of paid advertising types; to boost page likes, target a click through to a relevant page of your website and let people claim an offer that can be redeemed in store or online. In a very recent development, you’ll soon be able to remarket to users that have previously visiting your website via Facebook by showing your ad to remind them to come back!

What is wants to see is a well constructed website that loads quickly and has lots of well written, relevant and unique content. Once it’s seen that, it wants to see relevant websites linking to you in the most natural way possible. Make sure you pick a good web designer, host your site in the UK and consider your user at every turn. Try to develop good relationships with relevant third parties that will link to your website for a good reason that will benefit users and you won’t go far wrong.

Be natural with your SEO

So there we have it, five tips to consider when putting your digital marketing plans together. Remember what may work for someone else might not be right for you though, so there is always an element of trial and error. Test and measure and find what’s right for your business – and your audience!

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the process of making your site as visible as possible to Google for selected search terms. Since I could fill this whole magazine with advice on SEO, I’m going to pick out the very best tip I can offer – be natural and don’t try to trick Google! Updates to Google’s search algorithm over the past few years means that the world’s number one search engine is more sophisticated than ever.
