A

pparently, plenty of people get down on one knee and propose to the love of their life over the summer months. So if you’ve recently received a rather large, colourless, impeccably cut diamond or you were the one ‘putting a ring on it’, congratulations! You are the reason we run two annual Weddings issues and this is one of them. We turned the traditional model for promoting wedding venues on its head by asking a couple of couples why they chose a particular hotel or manor house for their big day. So if you’re currently scouring the land for somewhere suitable you can hear the reviews from the bride and grooms themselves.

September is also a big moment in the calendar for fashion. Jamie Craker has been reviewing some of London’s autumn winter shows and reports on the trends you’ll soon be seeing on the racks here in Sussex, with a selection of outfits hand picked by Chichester’s Lili Boutique.

BLACK TIE MEDIA LTD

If you’re planning on any refurbishments at home when the weather takes a cooler turn, you might be pleased to hear we’re featuring inspiration from Neptune Design. The classic-meets-contemporary style is on display in the Hailsham showroom and we’ve selected our favourite pieces from their collection – perfect for prepping your home for autumn.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOWS & DOORS FOR YOUR HOME

W

alk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively, whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong it is blindingly obvious – but when they have been chosen well, or the original windows and doors preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. So what should you consider when investing in new Timber Windows? For many homeowners, restoring the integrity of the original structure is paramount. When choosing windows and doors to faithfully replicate the appearance of the building in its heyday it is essential to study the size of the window sections, ensuring that they match the proportions of the original frames as closely as possible. Deep bottom rails, slim meeting styles and fine glazing bars are important details. In casement windows non-opening elements should be glazed with dummy sashes to ensure balanced sightlines. The amount of glass area is important and overly bulky sections should be avoided. The Timber WIndows range provides great dimensional flexibility and a wide range of choices to ensure traditional aesthetics are preserved, whilst providing 21st century levels of comfort, security and performance. Many options also exist to really break down the boundaries between the house and outdoor space, letting light flood in, such as the addition of a folding sliding door or a smooth running patio door. Time was when every window frame in sight was white. Today the choice of factory applied colours and finishes available adds a level of choice our predecessors would envy. With natural timber finishes, subtle shades of cream, green, blue and grey, as well as elegant black, the Timber Windows colour palette can help to highlight or to blend in. Multiple colours are also possible, with the option to finish the insides of your windows and doors differently from the outsides. We can also colour match to leading, quality paint brands to complement your interior colour scheme. Balancing the style, colour and choice of windows and doors appropriately all adds up to what our trans-Atlantic cousins call 'curb appeal' - a pleasing visual aspect for neighbours, passers-by and even future purchasers. This is the art and hallmark of a job well done. Timber Windows would very much welcome the opportunity to work with you, enabling you to enhance the value and beauty of your home through the addition of well-chosen timber windows and doors. To take the first steps simply visit our website, call us direct or pop into our showroom.

SUMMER SOIREE Rathbones choses a beautiful setting for its annual band and bubbly bash

46 | FINE SUSSEX

G

uests and clients came out in force once again to celebrate at Rathbone’s summer party. The wealth management firm celebrated another successful year by hosting the bash in a marquee at Warnham Park, near Horsham. A band was in full swing, the bubbly was flowing and the canapés handed round as the sun set over the stunning park – a perfect evening and great way to say ‘thanks’ to customers and friends of the firm. Philip Turner, business development executive at Rathbones, told Fine Sussex: “We do this every year and it’s always a popular event, with most people who we invite wanting to come along. It’s become a bit of a tradition. It really is just a way of showing our gratitude as well as getting people together. Many of our clients know each other but also many of them use it as a

way to meet new people and network. This venue was not just in a convenient location for our different office. It is stunning – a beautiful setting in beautiful grounds that we thought our clients would appreciate.” Rathbones was established in 1742 and is one of the UK’s leading providers of investment management services for private clients, charities and professional advisers. The company has 13 offices across the UK with an offshore presence in Jersey and £23.9 billion of funds under management (at June 2014). The firm’s success and reputation is built on the simple, but increasingly rare, commitment to superior client service as well as state-ofthe-art administrative systems. Shining bright In 2007 Lee Mead went from reality show wannabe to a singing superstar. We spoke to him about taking the crown (and coat) on TV’s Any Dream Will Do and how it led to three albums and a new solo show

W

est End star Lee Mead is visiting Horsham this summer on his latest solo tour. The singer and actor, who currently stars in BBC’s flagship hospital drama Casualty is the former winner of Any Dream Will Do, a TV show that found the next lead for Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. His new show will see Lee perform a range of musical genres and will include a more acoustic set of 16 songs. He told Fine Sussex: “I have such a range of musical tastes. I loved West End hits obviously but I also love Coldplay and songs like Hallelujah – this show will have a real mixed bag of music. It’s just me and a small band, so it has a very personal feel to it. I wanted it to be more intimate, so there’s music but also the chance to ask questions and I’ll have a chat with the audience.” Lee is in the middle of his tour, and has already performed for fans in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. He juggles his stage shows with a 9 to 5 job on set in Cardiff where he plays Casualty’s Ben, known as ‘Lofty’. Speaking about the role, he said: “It’s

a privilege to be part of such a long-running iconic BBC show. I love the part and the schedule does provide a bit of normality to my life. I work in Cardiff during the week and return to London – or wherever I am touring – at the weekend.” Although Lee became a household name when he won TV’s Any Dream Will Do, his career began many years before, as a young boy. He sang from as early as he can remember and prior to ‘Joseph’, he played other roles on stage in the West End. “Winning Joseph was great for my career, but it was also one of the first shows I ever saw, so that gives you an idea of how special it was for me. Although I had been in the industry for a while prior to that, it was the role of a lifetime really.” But it was only the beginning of a musical career that has since seen Lee tour the world and release three of his own albums. Following his tour he hopes to work on a new album, featuring 40s and 50s movie classics. For more information on Lee Mead, his tour and other appearances, go to leemead.co.uk

Wine Estate The background Some would have you believe that England is a recent arrival on the world wine stage. In fact, here at Bolney Wine Estate, we’re part of an English winemaking tradition stretching back almost 2,000 years, when the Romans occupied this peaceful corner of rural West Sussex. Our own story began in 1972, when owners Janet and Rodney Pratt planted three acres of vines to create what was then only the sixth commercial vineyard in England. Today, Bolney Wine Estate has grown to 39 acres, with a state-of-the-art winery added in 2005. Here, under the exacting eye of head winemaker Sam Linter, we specialise in producing premium red, white, rosé and sparkling English wines that have won numerous awards, and legions of fans, all over the world.

The wines At Bolney Wine Estate, we’ve been at the forefront of English winemaking for over 40 years. Our sandstone soils and south-facing slopes provide the perfect conditions for vine-growing. Like many English vineyards, we started out making white wines, and still produce excellent whites from familiar grapes including Bacchus, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, and more exotic names like Müller-Thurgau, Würzer and Schönburger, all of which thrive here. Since we started out in the 1970s, the climate in southern England has become warmer, making it possible to grow red grapes successfully here. As result, we now specialise in premium-quality red wines, notably Pinot Noir and Merlot, and also make some wonderful rosé. And while we may have settled our differences at Waterloo, the old cross-

Channel rivalry continues in the field of sparkling wine. Over the last decade, English sparkling wines (albeit made in the French tradition) have garnered global acclaim. In 2012, our own multi-award-winning Bolney Estate Blanc de Blancs received a Gold Outstanding at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. Red, white, rosé or sparkling, we stand or fall by what’s in the bottle. That, of course, starts with the grapes, which are all handpicked and carefully selected. We then use traditional techniques perfected over centuries to create a truly local product, with a global reputation.

Tours Our tours offer unique insights into the land, vines, techniques and talent behind our award-winning wines. And with ample tasting opportunities as part of the package, we’ve got everything you need for a great day out, birthday gift, or elegant alternative to the conventional stag or hen night. You’ll start with a leisurely walk round our 40 acres of vineyards, where you’ll learn how our sandstone soil, southerly aspect and meticulous management contribute to our wines’ unique character. Then, in the winery, we’ll show you how science, art and traditional craft skills come together to create our award-winning wines. Theory is all very well, but we know you’re really here for the practical. So, you’ll have plenty of time to swirl, sniff, sip and savour our white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, with expert advice from our experienced tour guides. And having settled on your favourite wine (or wines) there’ll be an opportunity to buy a bottle (or bottles) in our shop before you leave. We have tours to suit every budget and occasion, running from February through to November. To book a tour or for more information go to bolneywineestate.com

Granary

discovery Fancy somewhere different for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon tea? We’ve discovered a place to escape where new owners are making the most of the area’s best ingredients and stunning surroundings

N

estled in the heart of the South Downs countryside, in the small secluded village of Wiston, there is a quintessential English tea room, which is undergoing a very special transformation. Wiston Granary (previously known as Wiston Tea Rooms) was born 18 months ago, following an extensive and thoughtful refurbishment of the main tearoom and outside areas. The premises has been operating as a tea room and village stores for over 30 years and changed ownership several times, with each owner making their own mark. New owners Jess and Dan set out to enhance the existing setting and create a very special place to enjoy the charm of the English countryside, quality local food in a peaceful and tranquil environment. From the freshly-cut flowers on the table, freerange animals roaming, to the beautiful flagstone floor and lovingly nurtured and colourful gardens with soft sounds of singing birds and the stream running through, Wiston Granary is truly a place for everyone to experience. The Granary can be enjoyed all year round and the cosy refreshed tearoom is as pleasant and welcoming in the cold depths of winter as the stunning gardens are in the summer.

54 | FINE SUSSEX

Guests can enjoy our fabulous home-cooked breakfast, with our signature Wiston Granary sausages and locally smoked bacon from 10am to 1pm. A selection of light lunches and daily specials are always available, including our omelettes, made with our bantam eggs (when available), excellent Welsh rarebit, home made soup using seasonal vegetables and a selection of sandwiches featuring local Sussex cheese, smoked salmon and home cooked ham. A selection of homemade cakes are always available and for the afternoons, come and enjoy a freshly baked scone as part of a traditional cream tea or for a larger option, an afternoon tea served on a porcelain cake stand. Jess and Dan are supported by a friendly, dedicated and passionate team, who continuously strive to ensure every customer feels special and has an enjoyable visit. This year, Paul, an accomplished chef with over 30 years’ experience working in restaurants in London, Sussex and France, joined the Granary and is beginning to make his mark, together with Sarah, also a key member of the kitchen team. Paul and Sarah are working hard to develop the menu choices, using the freshest local ingredients, wherever possible.

This year, Paul, an accomplished chef with over 30 years’ experience working in restaurants in London, Sussex and France, joined the Granary and is beginning to make his mark

Set in around five acres of prime countryside, Wiston Granary also boasts a delightful onebedroom, self catering holiday cottage, dating back to 1755. This charming cottage has a small secluded private garden, where guests can enjoy watching the animals or relaxing after a day exploring the many exceptional locations Sussex has on offer. Jess and Dan are embarking on the latest project at Wiston by transforming the old Post Office and village stores into a small farm shop, which will stock a variety of local Sussex produce, much of which can also be found on our tea room menu. Products include free range eggs from our own hens, meat from our excellent local butcher, Richard Cook (Washington), chocolate from Cocoa Loco (West Grinstead), milk from South Downs Farm Dairy (Bury), ice cream from Downs View Farmhouse (Ringmer), home made scotch eggs from Nell Ball Farm (Plaistow), Sussex honey from Paynes (Hassocks), hand made pies from The Real Pie Company, freshly cut flowers from the Sussex Flower Farm (Wiston), locally grown plants by Shiela and Rod Hotton, charcuterie by Beal’s Farm (Barcombe) and a selection

of tea and freshly roasted coffee from around the World. This represents a small selection of our product range, there will be many more fantastic local products available. The shop is part of the main building, dating back to 1760 and is Grade 2 listed; its low ceiling, original oak beams and rustic flagstone floor help to create an authentic effect. The farm shop will open on 27th of September 2014, with a selection of tasting samples from our suppliers and promotions available throughout October. Wiston Granary is easily accessible – and well-behaved dogs are also welcome. There are also many fabulous walks, from the short stroll to the Grade 1 listed Buncton Chapel or the nearby bluebell woods, alive in colour during late spring to a more moderate trek up to Chanctonbury Ring at the top of the South Downs, there are walks to enjoy for everyone. Opening times are Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. Closed on Monday, except public holidays. Bookings welcome, call 01903 892330. For more information go to wistongranary.co.uk

W

e got engaged in Dubai just after New Year and quickly realised we wanted to get married at home with our closest friends and family with us on our special day. We toyed with the idea of a traditional summer wedding, but with my love of Christmas trees, twinkly lights and log fires, we decided a beautiful winter wedding would be the perfect choice. My then fiancé kindly delegated the first leg of venue hunting to my mum and I, and I have to say after seeing quite a few places in and around Kent, Surrey and Sussex, as soon as we drove into South Lodge Hotel we knew we had found ‘the one’! It’s such a beautiful hotel from the outside, and even more stunning inside. The staff members were so attentive, we were given a glass of Bucks Fizz before we even sat down, and were really looked after. We then met Cassie, who would turn out to be the best wedding co-ordinator a girl could wish for. Cassie took the time to show us around the hotel, the ceremony rooms, bedrooms, and function rooms, and went into so much detail, showing us pictures and answering all our questions. Every room we went into we simply loved, my mum felt South Lodge had a ‘grand opulence’ about it. For me I simply loved the mix of old and new, with the new extension blending so well with the old house, and how gorgeously decorated it was throughout. However for me the main distinguishing factor was the outstanding level of service. Although it’s a relatively large hotel by many standards, it felt small and intimate, like you were the only guests there. I knew I

60 | FINE SUSSEX

would be the only bride there on the day, and there was no question that I would be made to feel really special. I brought my fiancé back a few weeks later, and he was suitably impressed. To say he is a difficult man to please when it comes to hospitality and design is an understatement, but he could not find fault with either the hotel or the staff. We booked and paid the deposit there and then, and from that moment on everything ran smoothly. Cassie took away all my fears and concerns, and put up with my endless questions, and numerous iterations of wedding spreadsheets. We decided to have a private family meal the night before the wedding with wine tasting in the Cellar, which was a wonderful touch, and from that moment on I have to say our weekend ran like clockwork; without a hitch. All the staff from receptionists to the superb toastmaster were just impeccable in every way, and I couldn’t have asked for more. As for the food, although the MasterChef Professionals winner couldn’t be there on the day to prepare our wedding breakfast due to BBC interviews, his kitchen did him proud, with many saying it was the best food they had eaten at a wedding – ever. Despite the lack of snow (which I suppose can’t be helped!), South Lodge gave us the most wonderful wedding day, which surpassed all our expectations in every possible way. To make an appointment to discuss your wedding at South Lodge, call 01403 892 237 or go to southlodgehotel.co.uk for more information. With thanks to Anne and Suren Siva.

why we chose

Wiston Ho for our wedding

West Sussex residents Natalie Phillips and Tony Peidade tell Fine Sussex how they knew they’d found their wedding venue as soon as they arrived - and things only got better

atalie and Tony met at RAF Aldergrove, where Natalie was stationed as a helicopter pilot with the Army and Tony was conducting a camp for the Air Training Corps. Tony surprised Natalie by proposing in the kitchen of his rented house after weeks of planning a number of elaborate proposals, which all fell through due to one thing or another out of his control. “We had never heard of Wiston House before, however, when we first saw the house as we approached the driveway and it appeared in the distance, we knew then that it was special. We were both incredibly excited about the house and chose Wiston House for the stunning setting, beautiful canvas and wonderful feeling throughout. The amount of accommodation available and full use of the building was also incredibly important to us as it made the venue versatile and weather proof. Exclusivity was extremely important as it allowed us to completely relax in the surroundings and to know that our wedding would be the sole focus of the day. Having the house and gardens just filled

with our friends and family was wonderful and it helped all our guests to relax and feel at home too. There are too many ‘best’ moments from our wedding at Wiston House. The beautiful sunshine, seeing the terraces full of all our loved ones and uncovering the little details of the house during each of our visits, including discovering the monkeys on the wallpaper in the library. What helps to make Wiston House a truly remarkable venue is the staff and their enthusiasm and professionalism. From our initial contact with Wiston House through the detailed planning stages to the management on the actual day, we could not have wished to have been looked after any better! With thanks to Natalie Phillips, a commissioned Army officer, and Tony Piedade, senior vice president of Avois, Asia. The couple live in a small village in West Sussex. GOODWOOD HOUSE Hosting grand celebrations for over 300 years. www.goodwood.com/house

W e dblissd e d

66 | FINE SUSSEX

For an exquisite wedding that combines a history of grand events with the flexibility to create something that is truly unique, there is nowhere like Goodwood House for exchanging your vows

G

etting married in a grand ballroom against a backdrop of Van Dyke and Joshua Reynolds paintings while being served by Buckingham Palace-trained butlers might seem like a whimsical fantasy. But at Goodwood House, it’s possible. In fact, anything is possible here – the home of Lord March and the unofficial home of internationally renowned motor sport and horseracing. The quintessentially British venue is steeped in history, having been bought by the 1st Duke of Richmond in 1697 and handed down through successive generations, who have developed the property into the grand residence it is today. Weddings at most locations are a special affair. But here ‘special’ doesn’t seem to do them justice. This is a venue for extraordinary weddings. Brides, grooms and up to 500 guests (smaller, more intimate weddings are of course an option) have exclusive use of Goodwood House for the day. It offers privacy and a sense that the grand house is yours for the duration. After the formalities, while the champagne and canapés are being served, guests can wander the ancient halls, where they will find the likes of original art by Canaletto, commissioned especially for the Long Hall. The ‘Yellow Drawing Room’ is filled with beautiful Regency furniture and a 300-year old Axminster carpet, while hallways and other rooms are draped in silk curtains and historical artifacts. Both indoors and outside, where guests enjoy views of the immaculate parkland and cricket pavilion, this is an awe-inspiring place to say ‘I do’. But as traditional as it might sound, weddings here can be a very modern affair. An army of butlers complements the contemporary choices of a 21st century bride beautifully – their white gloved hands able to fix the train of a Vera Wang gown at any given moment. In addition, once the venue is hired, the day is yours to spend how you wish. So although a grand and historic house, weddings at Goodwood House are a truly bespoke affair, with everything possible from arriving on horseback to placing a fairground carousel on the coach circle or a historic plane in front of the House’s magnificent facade. Anything is possible at Goodwood remember, as house manager Rosemary Williams told Fine Sussex:

“The House provides a sense of formality and tradition and to some extent there is a degree of ‘ceremony’, it is a very historic place after all. But most importantly, we want a bride and groom to have a unique wedding – something tailored specifically to them. That’s why couples have a dedicated wedding coordinator who guides them through every step. They become the centre of our world for their day and many months leading up to it and we’re very flexible when it comes to providing the wedding they’ve been hoping for.” The house executive chef, who also caters for Lord March’s parties, is in charge of the wedding breakfast and any other food and drinks you’d like on the day. A bespoke consultation and menu-tasting session is all part of the planning process at Goodwood House, and makes for a very personal celebration. Ingredients are sourced from Goodwood’s organic Home Farm and a selection of local producers, creating dishes with real depth of flavour, considered one of the highlights of the day. But then again, that seems to be the case for every element of a wedding here. Rosemary added: “Attention to detail is really what sets us apart. The small details that we know are important to brides and grooms are all taken care of. Our butlers are all trained by David Edney, who has experience of the Royal Household and has incredibly high standards expecting impeccable service from his team.” There is no doubt this unique house is a remarkable setting for your special occasion. But what is less obvious from its appearance is just how much input you can have on your wedding. A dedicated team of event planners from Goodwood House is ready to help organise any style of wedding - with everything from theme ideas, menu design and inspiration for your entire celebration throughout this beautiful Estate. That said, this isn’t a venue for just any wedding. This is the fairytale. We can also supply silk flowers for bouquets and venues. People love how individual things are. Of course, on your wedding day you want the personal touch. So my boutique is very popular with brides”. Gill has even gone a step further to celebrate wedding season – exhibiting a Susanna Kemp wedding dress in her shop window. Susanna is a couture designer who lives in the village. She specialises in period wedding dresses and these are all made by hand. The boutique owner added: “I love creating original window displays and I wanted to create a bridal scene to not only showcase the products but to make brides feel it was a place they could come to in order to complete their outfit. It’s a beautiful window scene”.

You get the sense at Ashley and Thomas that the theme is ‘originality’. Everything is special and the jewellery in particular, rather rare. “I import pearls from the Far East, the Cubic Zirconias come from Hatton Garden in London, the toiletries from America, Majorca and Sussex. The crystal jewellery is imported from Thailand. They make such beautiful gifts for either yourself or a loved one simply because they are so hard to find – you won’t be buying something mass produced and sold in the thousands on the high street.” Are you going with tradition and wearing something borrowed or old on your wedding day? Gill now offers a cleaning and resetting or repair service for jewellery. It’s all part of her mission to help women look as individual and as fabulous as they can. The boutique owner even turns her hand to styling every now and again. At Ashley & Thomas, customers regularly bring in outfits they want to wear to a special occasion or ball and Gill will help them accessories, allowing them to try on necklaces, brooches and bangles – whatever they think might finish off an ensemble perfectly. Gill added: “I have a passion for what I do. There’s no hard sell I simply love beautiful things and like to make other women happy when they find something individual that they or someone they know will cherish. The styling service is all part of the fun. I’ve been in the business a long time. So I think people trust me to help them look their best.” Find Ashley & Thomas on the high street in Hurstpierpoint or search on Facebook for more information.

his season, it’s all about the masculine vibe. Across the catwalk we have seen narrow trousers, structured jackets and slouchy knits in a range of contrasting textures, making for a chic but practical take on this autumn’s charcoal and chocolate shades. Keep it simple: a monochrome palette has been popular with many top designers such as Valentino and Victoria Beckham; adding just a pop of colour or faux fur to set off the outfit and keep things fun.

Add leather elements to toughen up an elegant midi skirt; the leather jacket has been a prominent choice, offering a stylish way to stay cosy throughout the winter months. Any of the new season’s collections would be at home in a leafy setting; luxurious tweed fabrics and elegant pleats lend themselves to a walk in the countryside or a day at the races. Look out for brands including Victoria Beckham, Valentino, Akris and Acne, all of which are creating a buzz with their latest collections.

his year, contemporary art is exploring the intriguing stories behind Uppark’s Georgian façade, a magnificent National Trust mansion overlooking the South Downs. Unravelling Uppark, supported by the Arts Council, showcases the work of leading artists inspired by Uppark’s elegant interiors, sumptuous Grand Tour collection and larger than life historical characters. The exhibition has already received high acclaim from the arts world, as well as Uppark’s thousands of visitors.

A showcase of the world’s leading artists is ready to be viewed at the historic Sussex venue

This autumn, the Unravelling Uppark artists are running a series of talks and workshops to complement the exhibition, giving people a unique opportunity to discover the techniques used to create the artworks, and the inspiration behind these amazing pieces. Zoë Hillyard’s ‘Salvage’ is made using her signature hand-stitched patchwork ceramics. Her talk introduces a range of sources as inspiration, focusing on her experience of living and working in Mongolia. Zoe explains: “My interest in working with existing objects and building new chapters into their histories is very much inspired by the resourcefulness and approach to really valuing possessions that I witnessed”. In an all-day workshop, Stella Harding unravels the basketwork in her piece ‘Dish of the Day’. She will explore the techniques used to create this piece, using paper instead of clay. Reflecting the evocative text on the ceramic, vintage papers and paper printed with imagery relevant to Uppark’s history are used, juxtaposed with contemporary text.

Metal artist Agnes Jones’ workshop, ‘Drawing wire sculptures’ focuses on observational drawing, and how to make quick single line drawings, using Uppark as inspiration. In creating these sketches, Agnes will teach some basic metal working skills to translate these drawings into wire. Did Amy Lyon, later to become Emma Hart and then Lady Hamilton - lover of Lord Nelson –really dance naked on the dining table at Uppark? This story inspired Jini Rawlings in her installation, ‘Amy, Emily, Emma and Four times a Day (Vernet)’. In her illustrated talk, Jini will be delving into the research behind this fascinating installation, and the characters involved. ‘Seeing Sound’ with artist Simon Ryder aims to encourage people to focus on listening, and to become aware of the soundscape around them. Using simple tools, pen and paper, he will teach the techniques he used to create his exquisite laser etched sculpture, ‘Quartet’. H G Wells spent his childhood at Uppark, his experiences there providing a rich source of material for his novels ‘The Time Machine’ and ‘The War of the Worlds’. Artist Alice Kettle draws on elements from these novels in her work ‘The House of Eloi’. Explore this world in an illustrated talk discussing the collaborative process, research and techniques used in ‘The House of Eloi’. All events must be pre-booked by calling 01730 825415. Discover these artworks, and other beautiful and thought-provoking pieces at Unravelling Uppark, until 2nd November (closed Fridays and Saturdays). a successful start

Dominic Oliver, the new head master at Lancing College, tells us why he is passionate about the teaching profession and how he is relishing the opportunities of his new role at this historic school

L

Work in schools is an inherently optimistic business. What workplace could be better, and what role could be better than the Headship at Lancing?

ancing College is a beacon, a beacon in two senses. High on the Downs above Shoreham-by-Sea, the school Chapel can be seen for miles around and at night, floodlit, it is a remarkable and inspiring sight. The second, more significant, sense is that it has been an inspiration on the educational landscape ever since its founding in 1848. A place that prizes academic achievement alongside the development of the whole person - be that in sport, the arts or a whole host of other areas – every element of the College has been fostered to guide and help young people to happy and successful lives. It is in this light that I am delighted to join the school as head master. What a pleasure and privilege is in prospect! Having started teaching undergraduates while completing post-graduate work at the University of Oxford, I became a member of the English Faculty and taught all sorts of writers and works. Ranging from Chaucer’s Miller to Arthur Miller from Eliot (George) to Eliot (TS) there was always the beating pulse of Shakespeare at the heart of any given week. After producing an edition of Richard III aimed at illuminating and aiding teenagers without losing the nuance so vital to full understanding of Shakespeare, I decided to go direct to the classroom chalk face. I felt that, important as undergraduate teaching is, it cannot compare to the challenge and sheer joy of engaging and enlightening the previously uninitiated. This

has proved to be absolutely true. Thus I found myself in a classroom at RGS Worcester and just over two-and-a-half years later I was Head of English at Malvern College. These were incredibly stimulating years, as have been my nearly four years as managing head of Bedales School, just a stone’s throw from the Hampshire-Sussex border. Whether spending most of my time in the classroom or, as has been the case latterly, working at the ‘bigger picture’ of a school’s smooth running, at the heart of it all has been a desire to bring out the very best in the young people in my charge. Work in schools is an inherently optimistic business. What workplace could be better, and what role could be better than the Headship at Lancing? Writing of William Wordsworth, Shelley called him ‘a lone star… a rock-built refuge’, and thus at once a metaphorical guiding light and sanctuary of protection. Lancing College embodies that doubleness, providing inspiration, care and a set of guiding principles by which to live fulfilled, happy, and successful lives both in school and well beyond. It is my hope and determination that Lancing’s light will shine still more brightly under my stewardship. Welcome to the new headmistress

F

rances Mwale has been teaching since 1986, spending six years in Bexley, North Kent and then eight in Nairobi, Kenya, before teaching for 14 years at The Hawthorns in Surrey. She grew up in Norfolk, was a student in Nottingham and then London, after which she lived in Dartford before heading off to Nairobi. She returned to West Sussex to live near her family. Although until recently in a co-ed school, Frances attended Norwich High School from four until 18 years of age and fully understands how girls’ education allows you to be yourself. She left school with plenty of confidence, a ‘can do’ attitude and the security to know that she could follow her passions, irrespective of whether these were perceived as male or female domains.

We met Frances Mwale, who will be taking over from Joy Baggs as Farlington’s new Prep headmistress in September 2014

She is looking forward to working with a fantastic teaching team at Farlington and getting to know the girls and their parents. She says: “I am an ‘ideas’ person, so hope to be able to offer fresh ideas and ways of working and to enthuse and motivate others. My first priority is to get to know everyone, their strengths and what concerns them. I want the education offered to the girls to be one that affords maximum opportunity, challenge, support and inspiration. Creativity is so important and to look at ways of using the fantastic grounds and buildings to develop a passion for learning is really important.”

What book are you currently reading? I read books by Meja Mwangi, a Kenyan author. They are full of Swahili double-entendres and fun. What was your first pet and what was its name? Dogs always –Jane, Sue and Scamp were the first I can remember. What was your favourite book as a child? The Biggles books –not very p-c, but I loved the adventures, set in Africa. I also used to read ‘Jennings and Derbyshire’ books by Anthony Buckeridge and my friends and I acted out the stories at break times. What is your favourite holiday destination? Why? The Kenyan coast or the Rocky Mountains in Canada. I travel to South Germany too – anywhere where my friends are! What is the most exciting place you have ever visited? Or exciting thing you have ever done? I travelled to Russia many years ago, on the trans-Siberian railway. What is your favourite TV programme? I quite enjoy University Challenge and seeing how many answers I know. Nothing beats a good documentary. What is your favourite piece of music? Depends on my mood, but I like to listen to Nina Simone and I love any music that makes me dance! What’s your favourite colour? Red.

Here she answers a few questions on her background, leisure pursuits and plans for the future: What do you owe your parents? A great deal - they sent me to a great school and were always there for me, no matter what I threw back at them! They kept me grounded, too. What do you like to do when you aren’t teaching? I have many interests including gardening, dog walking, dress-making and writing letters. Book or Kindle? Why? Book – my eyes get tired with too much screen time and I like to be able to see how near I am to the end!

96 | FINE SUSSEX

What is your most treasured possession? I have a great gardening jumper that used to be my dad’s. Future plans for Farlington Prep? My first priority is to get to know everyone, their strengths and what concerns them. I want the education offered to the girls to be one that affords maximum opportunity, challenge, support and inspiration. Creativity is so important and to look at ways of using the fantastic grounds and buildings to develop a passion for learning is really important. For more information go to farlingtonschool.net

Google Glass and self-driving cars are on the cusp of mass production, and we already have watches that tell you what, when and how you ate and exercised

Technology timeline Stephen Trask, ICT development director at Burgess Hill School for girls, takes a look at how technology has changed over across four decades and what it means for educating young ones

I

n technological terms, today’s Generation Z students have never had it so good. My first encounter with technology as a school child was in a maths lesson in 1981. Our teacher marched us from the dusty confines of a pre-fab classroom adorned with posters of logarithmic tables, into a larger room, which I had never even been aware existed, let alone visited. Perched aloft a table in the centre of the room, like an obelisk of electronic knowledge, was a gleaming Commodore Pet CBM 3000 series. Over the course of one weekly 60 minute lesson a class of 30 children were able to rotate in pairs around this mysterious electronic monument, for up to three minutes in any given lesson; with plenty of time allowed for class movement/fevered glances at the screen/the hushed monotone of a Commodore Pet failing to boot up, or shut down. Fast forward to 1997 and the technology had moved on considerably – I was now assuming the role of the teacher, using a whole class set of Acorn Archimedes machines. Here, GCSE ICT students were saving their work onto 3.5 inch floppy discs, carefully labelling them and being sure not to expose them to heat/sunlight/magnetic fields/other people for fear of losing their precious data. Network servers were a technology that had yet to filter into schools. The internet was still a fledgling, hobbyist technology. Pay as you go mobile phones had not even been invented. And now in 2014 I teach students who are fully immersed in the most modern technology imaginable. The mobile phones they carry in their pockets are hugely powerful computers that feature an array of tools such as HD cameras, the ability to edit websites and Google documents, and to blog, tweet, tag and socially network in ways that were inconceivable when I was a child, and even when I was a newly qualified teacher in 1997. The tablets that they carry around are more powerful, flexible and

98 | FINE SUSSEX

useful than the very high-end laptop that I owned 10 years ago. Google Glass and self-driving cars are on the cusp of mass production, and we already have watches that tell you what, when and how you ate and exercised and watched streaming TV; and that recommend how you will want to watch TV in the immediate future, what you want to eat based upon your previous intake, and how much more exercise to do in order to counter the effects of the food that you have just been told to eat. The girls I teach today at Burgess Hill School for Girls are capable and confident users of the sorts of technology that adults fear. Not Excel, Word and Internet Explorer, or even Facebook and Twitter, but Instagram, Shazam, WeChat and YikYak. They are also increasingly curious about how to do more than passively consume technology. Our Year 6 girls are learning how to create websites via HTML and CSS. Year 7 are using online coding tools to create games and apps. Year 9 are learning the Python programming language and getting to grips with iteration, For loops and the flow of execution within a piece of code. Today’s students need similar sorts of guidance to those that came before them – how to respect themselves and other people, how to nurture their talent, how to let go of fear, realise their potential and soar. The tools for all of this are constantly changing, but the principles remain the same. So, too, does the simple notion that they are all bursting with potential, all thrilled to be learning new things and mastering the corners of the world that they call their own, and all thirsting to be recognised and encouraged. Part of our job is to prepare them for a world that will evolve so rapidly that we really do not know what the next 20 years will hold, other than the fact that, with care, nurturing and guidance, the future – theirs and ours - is bright.
