CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOWS & DOORS FOR YOUR HOME

W

alk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively, whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong it is blindingly obvious – but when they have been chosen well, or the original windows and doors preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. So what should you consider when investing in new Timber Windows? For many homeowners, restoring the integrity of the original structure is paramount. When choosing windows and doors to faithfully replicate the appearance of the building in its heyday it is essential to study the size of the window sections, ensuring that they match the proportions of the original frames as closely as possible. Deep bottom rails, slim meeting styles and fine glazing bars are important details. In casement windows non-opening elements should be glazed with dummy sashes to ensure balanced sightlines. The amount of glass area is important and overly bulky sections should be avoided. The Timber WIndows range provides great dimensional flexibility and a wide range of choices to ensure traditional aesthetics are preserved, whilst providing 21st century levels of comfort, security and performance. Many options also exist to really break down the boundaries between the house and outdoor space, letting light flood in, such as the addition of a folding sliding door or a smooth running patio door. Time was when every window frame in sight was white. Today the choice of factory applied colours and finishes available adds a level of choice our predecessors would envy. With natural timber finishes, subtle shades of cream, green, blue and grey, as well as elegant black, the Timber Windows colour palette can help to highlight or to blend in. Multiple colours are also possible, with the option to finish the insides of your windows and doors differently from the outsides. We can also colour match to leading, quality paint brands to complement your interior colour scheme. Balancing the style, colour and choice of windows and doors appropriately all adds up to what our trans-Atlantic cousins call 'curb appeal' - a pleasing visual aspect for neighbours, passers-by and even future purchasers. This is the art and hallmark of a job well done. Timber Windows would very much welcome the opportunity to work with you, enabling you to enhance the value and beauty of your home through the addition of well-chosen timber windows and doors. the making of CRAZY IN LOVE

W

ith the release of this issue come two notable events. The first is that ‘Crazy in Love’, our annual Romance Issue, marks the fourth anniversary of Fine. Those of you who have been with us since the beginning will remember we started life as The Resident Magazine. And although we rebranded as Fine Sussex in 2012 and refreshed our look again a year later with the current, larger, card-covered version, it has always been the same publisher and team putting it together. You’ll appreciate that it’s no small feat for any business (or print-based product) to be anything more than a flash in the pan during challenging economic times. So happy birthday to us! The second reason this issue is a poignant one is that it will be my last. I helped create the magazine early in 2011, so leaving after four incredibly happy years is going to be very difficult indeed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every person who has been on the journey with me, especially Lewis Forsaith, our designer, who also leaves this month.

When I started four years ago, the objective was to ‘enrich your life one page at a time’, and it’s been a mantra that guided the editorial decisions ever since. One month we could be telling you how to know if your gardener is good enough or cook the perfect steak, and another, how to cope when your children have flown the nest. We’ve done every feature with the intention of making your life a little better. So when people ask me about the unusual and unlikely success of Fine, or how we have lasted four years in a difficult economy and crowded market, I know the answer: Our heart has always been in the right place. Lately, as I’ve looked back on all the past issues, I am amazed by the breadth of topics we covered. We achieved something very unique for a regional publication, which no one else was doing at the time – a magazine with the quality of journalism and writing you would expect in a national glossy, using the people of Sussex as our contributors. I am certain those superior standards will continue for Fine after I have gone and I hope you will continue reading for years to come.

ProPerty as a Pension

Ahead of pension changes later this year, Phoebe Glover from Leaders looks at the alternative option available to those reaching retirement age

12 | FINE SUSSEX

W

ith legislation coming into effect soon that will enable people to draw down their pensions in one lump sum, thousands of people who may never before have considered becoming a landlord will be looking closely at buy-to-let as a possible option for getting the most from their pension pot. However, many pensioners will be concerned about what is involved with becoming a landlord; and the potential risks and problems that could arise. As they head into retirement after a long working life, they may not want the hassle that can be associated with being a landlord. They will also want as much security as possible, given that their investment will be funded by their precious pension pot, for which there can be no replacement. Buy-to-let is an appealing option because it gives investors the best of both worlds: a strong monthly income along with the potential for capital growth over the medium to long-term. There is also something very reassuring about an investment in solid bricks and mortar, which you can physically see and touch. For pensioners who are attracted to buy-to-let but need extra reassurance on their path to becoming a landlord, there is unique service on offer by property specialist Leaders. Free of charge, Leaders’ Investor Network matches people seeking a buy-to-let investment with the ideal property for their individual investment needs. Each property available through Investor Network has been carefully assessed by local lettings experts and offers a minimum 5 per cent yield, and/or significant capital appreciation potential. Phoebe Glover, Leaders’ Investor Network manager, explains further: “Every single property in our scheme has been hand-picked as having excellent investment potential. A large number are owned by landlords who are looking to sell after many successful years of investment so they have a proven track record. Many are available to purchase with tenants already in place - who have been carefully vetted and have proven reliability - so the investor will start receiving rent from the day their purchase completes, without the need to put the property on the rental market. “Before purchase they will also have access to details of the property’s maintenance

history, rental income, inspection reports and tenancy records for previous years. This is very reassuring for investors as it gives them a clear idea, based on detailed and accurate records, of what to expect in the future.” Whilst six per cent is the average yield of the properties that have been sold via Investor Network so far, some properties offer yields as high as eight per cent. However, for some investors yields are less of a priority than capital growth. For these Leaders has a selection of properties on offer chosen for their significant capital appreciation potential using official government statistics to forecast the growth that can realistically be expected. Typical return on these properties is around 15 per cent over five years. “As well as a selection of strong-performing buy-to-let properties across the UK to choose from, the Investor Network includes expert and completely impartial advice and guidance every step of the way. Each investor is different, with different priorities, investment goals, attitude to risk and budgets. We work with you to make sure your investment is as close a match as possible for your needs and circumstances. We can also put you in touch with tried and trusted solicitors and mortgage advisors who we know will provide the highest calibre advice and service.” Investors who purchase through Investor Network will receive a reduced rate on Leaders’ property management fees. So those who prefer not to be involved in looking after their tenancy can hand their property and tenant over to an experienced property manager who will take care of everything for them. “This means no worries about calls from tenants regarding maintenance issues, no need to keep an eye on the property yourself or deal with things like inventories, late rent payments, checking your tenant in and out, or anything else,” says Ms Glover. “Our qualified property managers have everything covered so you can relax in the knowledge that your investment is in safe and experienced hands, earning you an income while you enjoy your retirement to the full.” Joining Investor Network costs nothing and all advice is free and completely impartial. doTELL How do I know if my housekeeper is doing a good job? They might get the pledge and duster out when you’re home, but it’s never easy to know if they’re really up to the job. Here we get advice from Janice Broderick, one of the area’s most soughtafter housekeepers, to find out how you can tell if they’re cleaning up more than putting their feet up

20 | FINE SUSSEX

You can tell

They have a routine

The first sign your housekeeper or cleaner is doing the job they’re paid for will hit you as soon as you walk in the door. My clients have told me they can see a difference, even if it’s just in the porch area or mud room. A good housekeeper will understand how important first impressions are to you. So making sure shoes are put away or that mats are straightened and floors cleaned is crucial.

Now, don’t worry if your housekeeper does his or her job at random. They may work best that way. But I have a specific routine that ensures I can do the maximum amount of work possible in the time I have. For example, I start with the bathrooms and bedrooms on the top floor, collecting laundry and cups and plates (from the teenagers’ rooms) while I go. Then gradually work my way downstairs.

You can smell

They never waste a step

Some clients prefer not to be able to smell strong fragrances and chemicals, but it is a good way of knowing (and feeling!) as though your housekeeper has been earning their fee. I like to ensure that the home smells fresh, so I will always open windows and doors if appropriate so get the stale air and dust out and clean air in. If my client likes it, I will also use a carpet freshener or spritz a little Jo Malone room spray around the entrance-ways and in the bedrooms and bathrooms.

I learnt this tip as a waiter. Your housekeeper will move around the house a fair amount. If they’re smart, they will never waste time and energy moving from one room to another without doing something useful. That can be something as small as taking away some rubbish or bringing back the dustbuster.

The difference is in the details Moving on past the superficial signs such as smell and sight, there are ways you can differentiate between a cleaner who is there to simply dust and one who really wants to make your house somewhere pleasant to live. Personally, if you’re paying them enough, I believe the homeowner should never have to lift a finger when it comes to cleaning. Of course, the remit should be decided early, usually in the first meeting, but your housekeeper should plan a rolling rota of what I call ‘hidden cleans’. These are things that can be done monthly, or sometimes yearly. Such as cleaning all the edges of the carpets or clearing out the kitchen cupboards and wiping down. Other tell tale signs to keep an eye on are light switches internal glass, lamps, and towel rails.

They move things Obviously there will be some clients who don’t want a housekeeper touching valuable possessions and that can be decided at the beginning. However, I believe that any cleaner worth the money will not be afraid to pick up, dust off and carefully place back anything in your home.

They tidy, too Who wants to come home to a house that smells clean but looks like a bomb just hit? Housekeepers must realise that ‘homemaking’ is as much about comfort as it is cleanliness. I want to make sure clients can come home and not have to tidy the books on the coffee table or re-arrange the cushions. I like to say it should be ‘dinner-party-ready’. In other words, you could invite the prime minister round for tea and not be concerned that your child’s Playstation games are scattered across the floor.

raff Diamonds is renowned for sourcing the most magnificent stones, beautifully articulated jewellery settings and exceptional design ingenuity. This sapphire and diamond beaded tassel secret watch is an enchanting piece of jewellery. Celebrated for designing innovative jewelled timepieces, Graff has surpassed the classic secret watch configuration with its newest addition, fusing breathtaking design with watch expertise. Combining meticulously graded and matched sapphires sourced over many months, ensuring continuity in colour and vibrancy, an extraordinary tassel conceals a pavé diamond watch face suspended from a delicate platinum chain. Through collaboration between Graff’s designers and master craftsmen, the technique required to create a cascading beaded tassel is perfected. In order to ensure this three dimensional element is exquisite from every angle, the matching of each sapphire bead is critical for its creation and aesthetic. Commenting on the sapphire and diamond secret watch, Anne-Eva Geffroy, design director at Graff Diamonds said: “For me,

gemstone beads embody fluidity and movement - and so I created a design for a piece with row upon row of draped sapphires and diamonds, which lead the eye towards a dynamic three dimensional tassel. The inclusion of a secret watch, delicately suspended from a platinum chain is highly unique, adding a further element of surprise and intrigue.” Framing this captivating tassel, two ornate brooches with pear shape sapphires at their centres are embraced by an arrangement of the finest white diamonds united by five rows of stunning sapphire and diamond beads. The piece incorporates over 330 carats of sapphires and 40 carats of diamonds and can be worn three ways, as a single piece, individual brooches, or as a single brooch with a mesmerising tassel. A diamond company extraordinaire, Graff is involved in every stage of the jewellery making process - from the sourcing of each rough stone, right through to the cutting, polishing and final setting of each exquisite jewel. Throughout its rich history, Graff is said to have handled more diamonds of notable rarity and beauty than any other jeweller. For more information go to graffdiamonds.com

it doesn’t work. • Don’t design your book cover unless you’re a designer. Find a local freelance graphic designer so you’re not paying over the odds. Before commissioning them look at examples of book covers they’ve already designed. If you’re happy, ask for their fee in writing. How many changes will you be permitted to make to their designs before incurring additional charges? Your designer should present you with three designs and an accompanying explanation of what inspired them for each one. You should be allowed to make at least one set of changes to your preferred design without incurring an extra fee. Make sure this is all covered in their quotation.

Y

our book cover is in effect your shop window. At book signings I’m always fascinated by the people examining my book. Most will browse the front cover for a few seconds before turning it over to read the back, spending more time on this because there’s usually more to read. Satisfied, they will then dip into the book itself. When a person is evaluating your book online, it has to stand out in a beauty parade of other books that have been recommended or that are in the top 100 best category sellers. GRAB YOUR READERS’ ATTENTION RIGHT FROM THE START Make sure your book stands out from the crowd, shouting ‘buy me now!’ Here’s how... • Visit your local bookshop to study the book covers in a few categories making notes on why some appeal to you and why others don’t. Do the same online too because you’ll get a very different impression there. Here you’re initially looking at a tiny image, so a book cover that grabs your attention for the right reasons is one worth taking note of. Can you read the book title and its strapline clearly? • Study the book covers in your category. You don’t want to copy them but there’s nothing to stop you from being inspired by them or steering away from a particular look because

• Don’t just tell your designer to ‘get on with it’. Brief them thoroughly with a written document that includes: - Details about your target audience. Revisit the work you did in chapter four and condense this into a thorough target audience brief. Your designer has to know who they’re designing the book cover for—because it is not for you. - The ‘trim size’ of the book (the height and width of the page), the number of pages, and type of paper to be used so they can calculate the spine width. They will also require the barcode for your ISBN, and any QR codes that will link people to your website or blog. - The additional text that will be on the front and back of your book cover. Let them have three images of book covers you like and three you don’t and explain your reasons why. If there’s a particular style of design that you really don’t like (for example cartoon images) include this in your brief. They can’t read your mind so the more information you provide the better. A N AT T R A C T I V E B O O K C O V E R W I L L U S U A L LY CONTAIN THESE ELEMENTS: • An easy-to-read title. • Your name. • Some powerful testimonial about your book. • Some succinct and persuasive text about you as an author. • A concise but appealing summary of the contents of your book. • The price of your book, the bar code and ISBN.

PROPOSAL PLACES Thinking of popping the question? We went in search of some of the best places to get down on one knee both here and abroad, with a special selection overleaf from luxury experience experts Brown and Hudson Sardón de Duero, Spain ledomaine.es Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is a newly restored, historic hotel located in a 12th century abbey surrounded by vineyards in Spain’s Duero winegrowing region. The hotel has a Michelin Star, a world-class spa and eight new guest rooms due to open in July. But the cream on the cake is its guest experience - mushroom foraging on the hotel’s medieval estate. Managing director Andres Araya told Fine Sussex: “Our vision for LeDomaine from the beginning has been to create a hotel that stands apart for its combination of historic atmosphere and precedent-setting guest

facilities and experiences, and all of the components of this extraordinary property are coming together.” El Santuario, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine’s new spa, will open its doors July 2015 featuring 10,000-sq.-ft. of ultra-luxurious facilities, a ground-breaking bespoke vinotherapy concept, the spa industry’s first “Spa Sommelier,” and the highest levels of guest service. The 900-year-old abbey’s former stables are being transformed into this nurturing and innovative sanctuary of holistic healing and wellness. Eight spacious new guest rooms, which will have direct spa access, are also part of the stables transformation.

Iceland Tailored experiences organised by brownandhudson.com In Iceland you’ll board a helicopter in Reykjavik and fly to a secret location, surrounded by bubbling hot springs. You begin your sunset walk through the mists and after a while the air clears to reveal the edge of a glacier. A few steps more and together you stand awestruck at a sea of icy whiteness. Nearby a warm glow catches your eye – your home for the night, your luxury tented camp. Spend the evening together, wrapped up against the cold, snuggling by the warmth of the fire watching the Northern Lights dancing across the black night sky.

M ya n m a r Tailored experiences organised by brownandhudson.com The mystery and allure of Myanmar is still largely untouched as it is only just opening up to outside visitors, making it the perfect location for a proposal. Imagine climbing to the top of an ancient pagoda in Bagan as the sun slowly sets behind the Himalayas. Staring out across the temple-covered plain, you can’t help but be awestruck by their beauty and suddenly you turn to see your loved one getting down on one knee to propose. Afterwards a procession of villagers will bring you back to the Lotus Villa at Aureum Palace. Here you’ll celebrate your engagement with a romantic dinner for two under a canopy of stars with spectacular views of the pagodas. Or perhaps your loved one has a head for heights, so you could wrap up and climb aboard a hot air balloon for a sunrise flight across the plain. You can watch in amazement as the sun climbs from behind the towering mountains and casts its golden glow over the beautiful temples. As the morning mist slowly retreats, pop the cork on a bottle of champagne before popping the big question.

South Lodge Hotel, Horsham 01403 891 711 southlodgehotel.co.uk Set in an historic house, with views across the South Downs and a Michelin-starred restaurant, this is one hotel where a proposal would be very special indeed. The team here treats guests like they are visiting their own home and a warm welcome awaits. For special occasions, arrangements for champagne on arrival can, of course, be arranged. And why not book a celebratory afternoon tea, dinner in The Camelia or The Pass. Alternatively a light bit in the wine cellar.

Amberley Castle, Amberley 01798 831 992 amberleycastle.co.uk There is something undeniably magical about staying in a castle, especially when there is over 900 years of history to absorb. Stunning four poster bedrooms add to the atmosphere and the dining experience is fit for a King or Queen. Amberley Castle is located less than 60 miles south west of London and only 22 miles from Brighton in the village of Amberley. With a unique balance of a history with the facilities of a luxury hotel it is the perfect place to show someone how much you love them. The castle is still completely enclosed by a 60ft high curtain wall which is flanked by a magnificent twin-tower gatehouse to the south and a kitchen block and a garderode tower with gun loops to the north. Square internal towers stand at the corners, with a small water-gate in the west wall and a Norman postern in the east wall. Every night the huge Portcullis is raised, closing out the rest of the world and creating a wonderful haven behind the castle walls.

The Grand, Brighton 08712224684 grandbrighton.co.uk If views of Brighton’s seafront or the atmosphere of one of the UK’s most iconic venues is what you’re looking for in a proposal, head to The Grand. There you can enjoy Champagne in the hotel’s seafront bar or enjoy some bubbly and oysters at GB1, The Grand’s stylish and contemporary restaurant. Newly refurbished rooms have updated the hotel from traditional to oh-so chic – a place your bride to be will be wowed.

F a r l i n g t o n Why it’s more than just an examination subject

A

t the end of last term, Farlington’s Lower School put on an outstanding production of the play, ‘Dandelion Time’, a time-travelling adventure in which Father Time is kidnapped and three modern-day children find themselves dressed in Edwardian costume and on a quest to rescue him. Girls from Years 7 to 9 gave three performances to packed houses of parents, friends and staff in the School’s dedicated Studio. The performers were ably supported by those working backstage on sound and lighting. Drama is a strong and valued part of life at Farlington. Under the direction of Mark Slawinski, Head of Drama, the girls are offered a wide range of opportunities to develop in this area. For instance, there are two Senior School productions a year: a play for Years 7 to 9 and a musical for the Upper School. Mark Slawinski aims to promote a love of drama, theatre and the creative arts. Studying the subject encourages artistic expression and paves the way for excellence in dramatic performance. This is evident in the consistently high quality shows he produces, which balance entertainment and challenge. Underlying a finished, well performed play, the process of putting on a production compels everyone to work together as a team - a drama performance is a truly collaborative process. Mark says, “The key to engaging the girls is to ensure every lesson is fun and inclusive and that the work that

62 | FINE SUSSEX

is delivered is interesting, accessible and exciting. Plays are picked very carefully to ensure they offer creative opportunities to a large number of people. “The overall aim is for every student to enjoy their time learning about stagecraft, plays and styles and for them to feel valued whilst acquiring valuable skills. Drama can also benefit the less confident in many ways, not just through the assumed mask of role play but also by giving pupils a free working environment with the safety net of creativity. “It also provides many technical roles to which shyer students respond well and girls have thrived at the School doing the lighting and sound for shows. At Farlington, we often see that many initially shy students become exuberant performers and this is because of the supportive, friendly atmosphere of fun within lessons and during show rehearsals.” Within the curriculum Farlington offers Key Stage Drama, GCSE Drama and A Level Drama, as well as the opportunity to take LAMDA examinations which provide the opportunity to gain valuable UCAS points as ‘QCA – Accredited’ LAMDA higher-level qualifications are included in the UCAS tariff. Speech and Drama is hugely popular, not just for the points, but for the enjoyment the girls in the Senior and Prep School take from it. In all, 138 girls are taking these classes. Lizzie Booth, Speech and Drama teacher, comments: ”Speech and Drama nurtures

spontaneity, imagination, trust, teamwork, and self-confidence. Most importantly it is so valuable for learning presentation skills. It is not just about acting, although the girls absolutely love acting and appreciate the release it gives them. This all starts in the Prep School. As Lucy Cooper, Speech and Drama teacher, says, “Drama in the Prep School culminates in the annual Prep Production in March. This is always eagerly anticipated as every girl in Prep 6 has a speaking part, supported by Prep 5 as the Chorus. “Time and again, girls that are quieter in their school daily life surprise and delight their parents, friends and members of staff with their performances and the confidence they have gained as a result of sharing in this process.” The benefit that Drama brings to individual girls and the School as a whole is not something that can be easily measured or quantified. Yes, there are excellent examination results and some girls study Drama after leaving Farlington, but it also brings the School together across different year groups and academic abilities. Most importantly, the confidence the girls develop while working on a production lasts far beyond the run of a particular performance and beyond their time at Farlington.
