e toyed with a few different themes for the Wakefields Jewellers magazine this time around. Should we go with seasons, milestones, or events, for example? We wondered, what’s the best way to show you, our customers, friends or partners, who we are, what we stand for and what we hold most dear? And then we realised it’s all about love, actually. In the shop, we are fortunate enough to see it everyday; the eyes lighting up when a gentleman buys his first Rolex or the brideto-be welling up when she has her engagement ring fitted just so. It’s a privilege to be part of such moments. So that’s the inspiration behind this edition of ‘Renowned for Luxury’. We’re taking you on a journey from
those first butterflies and blushing cheeks to happily ever after. You’ll also find out what we’ve been up to in recent months. There was excitement about the launch of watch brand Tudor here. And we also opened a new Pandora shop in Horsham’s town centre – exciting times. You might have also noticed we’re more present on social media these days. We’re enjoying hearing about your purchases or items you’ve spotted via the likes of Instagram and Facebook. Whether it’s your new diamond ring, a smart new watch or something on your wish list, take a pic and share the joy with the ones you love. After all, that’s what life is all about isn’t it?

ur brand new stand-alone Pandora shop has opened in Horsham. The new boutiquestyle store is in Swan Walk shopping centre (where Barratts used to be). Inside, shoppers will find a clean, minimalist backdrop to display an extensive range of beautiful Pandora jewellery. Similar to the Pandora flagship store at Marble Arch in London, the Horsham branch features stunning Evolution furniture.
The new concept store will enable us to bring clients an enjoyable and comfortable experience. We already have a devoted Pandora following in Horsham and we have been serving them until now at the Wakefields Jewellers shop on West Street. We hope our existing clients and a new audience will be attracted to the Swan Walk space, where they will get the same dedicated customer service, along with a more extensive range of Pandora to explore.

e’ve stocked products by renowned fine jewellery maker Hans D Krieger for 15 years. We’re huge fans here at Wakefields Jewellers. In fact many of us wear their creations as they are always utterly perfect. Co-owner Melanie recently went to visit the Hans D Krieger headquarters in Idar Oberstein, Germany, where she discovered what makes this family business so special. Melanie told renowned: “I was very excited to visit the Krieger base, as I have huge admiration for their work. The family has been cutting diamonds for 300 years. They still cut and polish diamonds and gemstones, but they also now design, mount and set all the stones in-house with a team of experts. This is very rare in the jewellery industry – one manufacturer overseeing the complete journey of the gem from mine to finger.” As part of her visit, Melanie went on a tour of the factory and saw a selection of rough diamonds before watching the diamond cutting. She even had a go at cutting one herself. The tour included every stage of the jewellery manufacturing process at Krieger, including gemstone cutting and

polishing, jewellery design (using CAD and a 3D printer), casting mounts (mainly 18ct white gold, yellow gold and platinum), polishing, setting stones and polishing again! Melanie added: “Watching the process step-by-step gave me an insight into what a timely process it is to make fine jewellery. But the results are amazing. My favourite moment was definitely polishing a facet on a diamond. You can only cut a diamond with a diamond and you have to be careful not to apply too much pressure, which can break the stone. Another highlight was the ‘mouse ring’. It was exquisite, so unique; with so much workmanship involved. The family and their team are so humble and almost take their exceptional craftsmanship for granted. I feel really privileged to have witnessed it first-hand and soaked up the professionalism and enthusiasm in the air at the Krieger factory.” Like Wakefields Jewellers, Krieger is a family business with a passion for jewellery that has been passed down through the generations. The Krieger family’s fascination for precious things is embodied in every one of its beautiful creations.

LAND ROVER LAUNCHES NEW DISCOVERY SPORT Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery Sport, the world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV. The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than existing 5-seat premium SUVs. Discovery Sport’s progressive new design approach defines the new Discovery family with optimised volume, proportions and stance. Its design leadership combines with engineering integrity to result in a dynamic profile, the ultimate use of interior space and 5+2 seating configurability. “Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. “I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that; Discovery Sport’s dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market.” This spirit of adventure is reflected in Discovery Sport’s interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously. A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space
behind the second row. Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of all-terrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain Response® technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers
an all-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and tilt-and-slide row-two seating for maximum interior configurability. At launch the Discovery Sport will be equipped with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Both the all-alloy Si4 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 2.2-litre turbodiesel feature stop-start technology, high-pressure direct injection, low-friction internal components and smart regenerative charging for outstanding performance and economy.
“Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony,” Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. class-leading capability in all conditions. As with every new Land Rover, safety has been a key priority in the development of the new Discovery Sport, resulting in a first-in-class pedestrian airbag, autonomous emergency braking, and a state-of-the-art bodyshell featuring both ultra-highstrength steel and lightweight aluminium. This represents a fraction of the advanced equipment available in Discovery Sport, which also includes Head-Up Display,
Later in 2015, a highly efficient ED4 turbodiesel engine will join the range with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km*. Both 9-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions are available, along with a choice of two- or four-wheel-drive. “Not only does Discovery Sport mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market,” said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. “Discovery Sport’s versatility is a key differentiator. It is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment.” Discovery Sport will be produced at Land Rover’s award-winning manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. It goes on sale in early 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.

WHICH WATCH It’s a little known fact that there’s an etiquette to what you put on your wrist and when. So we turned to editor James Hood to help select the right men’s timepieces for a range of occasions

The World Timer, by British brand Bremont, is ideal for those moving across different time zones. Originally a military-inspired watch, it is tough, masculine and can be put through its paces no matter where you are in the world.

If you never use that feature you can still rest assured you’re wearing a watch that will withstand the impact of water. But it’s not only out at sea that you’ll impress with this choice. Back at the beach bar or restaurant, it is as stylish as it is splash proof.
Black tIe Ball tudor style collectIon £1,580 case – Stainless steel strap – Black leather Unmistakable character, timeless tradition and a contemporary infusion – the traits of most modern black tie events as well as this watch by Tudor. For any formal evening bash, less is more. Opt for fewer bells and whistles, more elegance. The beauty of this option is that Tudor makes a wide range of styles inspired by the 50s, 60s and 70s, so you can go as simple and classic as you wish. at wOrk LOngines COnquest CLassiC £2,030 Case – Stainless steel strap – As above Although a gentleman conceals most of his watch under an impeccably tailored Eton shirt and Brioni suit jacket, the glimmer of a classic timepiece in a business meeting never hurts. Technically, a leather strap is the done thing when worn with any formal attire – and that includes at the office. But given that the Conquest Classic range is the official watch of some of the world’s greatest sporting events, I’ve made an exception. It is the watch of choice for when you want to demonstrate your commitment to excellence. Or win the pitch.
driving Citizen ChrOnO time a-t frOm £499 Case – Stainless steel or black ion plated steel strap – As above If you enjoy taking your car out for a leisurely spin on a Sunday afternoon, why not have a good watch to glance at every now and again? The Citizen Chrono Time comes in a range of colours and with either a stainless steel or leather strap. The dial features refreshing accents in either orange or (racing car) red.
On a first date LOngines COnquest CLassiC £6,180 Case – 18ct pink gold strap – Black alligator If you’re out to impress, you don’t need to do it with your watch. That said, wearing something understated that conveys ‘I care about what I put on my wrist’ will win you a few brownie points. This particular Conquest Classic is perfect for a romantic evening – it’s traditional enough to be masculine and sophisticated but the rose gold case shows you know a thing or two about style. Combine it with your dazzling personality and a second date is a dead cert.

Advice from a newlywed on finding the right ring for a proposal and the perfect moment to pop the question

etting engaged is something most women dream about. The vision of a man they love on bended knee, presenting a beautiful little jewellery box and promising them a ‘happy ever after’ is the stuff that fairytales are made of. Although a ring is undoubtedly the most important item required for a proposal, it’s not always that easy. So we enlisted the help of a gentleman who’s recently been through the entire process – from purchasing a gemstone to popping the question. “I had actually bought the rough diamond years before. It meant that when I knew I was going to propose to Natalie I could have it made into the ring she would want. I had a pretty clear idea of how it should look because I know her well enough. It had to be big enough to celebrate the engagement but not so large that it was really brash. Fortunately, she had pointed out one she liked and I had my rough diamond made into a square cut stone with a claw in each corner. It also has diamonds along the band, which is made
from white gold”, Tony Piedade told us. Tony and Natalie Piedade had been together for two and a half years before Tony asked Natalie to marry him. After making elaborate plans to ask the all-important question, Tony ended up proposing at home, which turned out to be the perfect location. “I had originally wanted to ask Natalie to marry me at Danesfield House in Buckinghamshire. But as it turned out, we ended up at home, in the kitchen in the midst of a difficult move. It wasn’t the most typical way of proposing but now I look back and am really pleased we were at home. The moment was entirely about our future together as a couple.” Natalie said yes and, speaking about the engagement ring, told us: “I was completely over the moon, so happy. And it’s very nice to know that my ring was chosen by Tony. It is as close to a one-off as I could have.” The happy couple chose their wedding bands together, with Tony’s made from Palladium and Natalie’s, white gold, before celebrating the occasion at Wiston House in Sussex.

ADVICE ON CHOOSING AN ENGAGEMENT RING TAKE YOUR TIME Although you might be dying to pop the question and bursting with excitement to ask for your girlfriend’s hand in marriage, relax. “Take your time to decide what your partner would like, her style etc. Whether you want to buy a ring or have one designed and made. There’s a lot to consider”, Tony added. PAY ATTENTION Listen closely when your partner drops hints about ring styles. Pay close attention to the type of jewellery they wear at the moment as well as what kind of person they are. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A RISK Obviously it’s an expensive purchase so avoid being too wild with your decisions. But ultimately many girlfriends will be glad to have something you have given a lot of thought to. CONSULT OTHERS Mums, sisters, other friends will probably all have a good idea of what your partner would like in an engagement ring. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or get a second opinion – as long as you’re sure they can keep a secret! DON’T PROPOSE WITHOUT A RING Tony said: “It can be hard to guess what your partner will like in an engagement ring. If you are really stumped, choose an inexpensive ring for the proposal and you can go and choose the real engagement ring together. Whatever you do, my advice would be not to propose without a ring.

ne of Wakefields Jewellers’ favourite suppliers, Clogau, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The second-generation family business uses Welsh gold from the onceabandoned St. David’s mine in Bontddu, which was rediscovered by William Roberts in 1989. The mine, once the largest and richest of all the gold mines in the Dolgellau mining area, still had treasure to uncover. With the help of three local miners, William embarked on several years of small-scale mining, during which he extracted a stockpile of Welsh gold. Branded ‘Clogau Gold of Wales’, William used it exclusively to create jewellery of the very highest quality, beauty and originality, with Wales as his inspiration. In 1994, his fi rst range of jewellery was launched and sold in a handful of gift shops local to the Clogau mine. From just three employees and a hand-
ful of pieces in the early 1990s, Clogau has become a renowned brand that is sold worldwide. And, like Wakefields Jewellers, it has remained proudly in the family. Father and son team, William and Ben Roberts, remain at the helm of the North Wales headquarters, devoted to creating beautiful, original jewellery with rare Welsh gold in each piece. Clogau jewellery is crafted by hand and its designers still take much of their inspiration from the themes and traditions found in the Welsh landscape and culture, including circles and swirls of eddies in rock pools, intertwining flowers and patterns of Celtic art. The Clogau Gold Mine is famous for supplying gold for the wedding rings of The Queen, The Prince of Wales, the late Diana Princess of Wales, The Queen Mother & Princess Margaret. On behalf of everyone at Wakefields Jewellers, we’d like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Clogau.

HOME WORK It’s often overlooked when it comes to interior design, but as expert Katrina Smith writes, your office can be as stylish as any other room in the house
I
f you are looking for a bespoke home office, the first thing you need to look at is your space and how much storage you will need. I recently designed a home office for a client and we decided to have the desk and shelving all made from oak. The desk was made from a varnished oak and the storage from painted oak to blend in with the wall colour. If you are not looking for bespoke, you will still need to choose a desk with plenty of room for your keyboard, screen, somewhere for the printer and the telephone. And don’t forget somewhere to keep pens, pencils and notepads so that they are easy to grab when you’re on the phone. A comfortable, supportive office chair is very important, and this is where it is best to spend a little more money. Try out several chairs until you find the one that meets your needs.
When considering where to have your home office, choose a room that has plenty of natural light. This makes for a much brighter space. If it is not possible to have a space with outside light, then task lighting becomes very important. Overhead lighting will be required along with accent lighting – desk lights, and perhaps floor lamps for ambience and those late night stints at the computer. When setting up your office don’t neglect the personal touches. How about adding a feature wall with a bit of colour or texture? For a recent client we had a feature wall in The Little Greene Paint Company’s Citrine emulsion. It really gave a focal point to the room. Plus, don’t be afraid to add a bit of your personality in artwork, blinds and other accessories, just like you would in other areas of your home.

YOURS TRULY Catherine Goddard talks to Melanie Wakefield about the jeweller’s bespoke creations
C
reating bespoke jewellery for clients has been a part of Wakefields Jewellers’ business from the very start. Whether sourcing new materials, or re-modelling metal and gems from existing jewellery, the team at Wakefields Jewellers has the creativity and expertise to design and make exceptional one-off pieces. Melanie Wakefield heads up jewellery design. With 26 years in the business, she has an innate sense of what makes jewellery beautiful: quality, precious metals, impeccable gem stones, inspired design, excellent craftsmanship and insight about the client. Understanding their vision and what brings them pleasure is at the heart of her job. Clients who want to have a piece of jewellery designed at Wakefields are offered an appointment with Melanie. She asks them to think in advance about their idea for the design and to bring any inspirational pictures they can to their appointment. “Sometimes the client’s brief is vague. To stimulate ideas, I ask them to tell me about their motive for having the jewellery made. There may be a sentimental reason for creating the piece and the emotion behind it can be reflected in the design. This is particularly important when repurposing jewellery that has been inherited, or reinventing an engagement ring. The wearer wants to feel as if the sentiment of the original piece is enhanced rather than lost”, Melanie told us. The initial appointment with Melanie is an opportunity to narrow down the possibilities, refining the client’s concept. Melanie shows them jewellery from stock, assesses possible stones, cuts, mounts, metals and profiles. From all the choices, she sketches a variety of options for the customer to narrow down into the three best options. At this point, her sketches are hand-drawn in greater detail, or a CAD sketch is produced, showing the top and side views of the proposed designs. From these, a client makes their final decision and the
manufacture process begins. “The sky is the limit,” Melanie added. “I can source any stones and match any brief. We’ve designed and made all sorts of novel and wonderful designs over the years. I’ve never had to admit defeat on a commission! Our flexibility is down to our experienced team. We have two external workshops and several of our staff members have been with us for decades. Between them, they have a combined experience of over 200 years.” Every piece of jewellery goes through a production line involving several sets of highly skilled hands. With 103 years in the jewellery trade, Wakefields Jewellers also has a distinct advantage when it comes to established connections that can get things done. Melanie gives the example of a client that wanted a ruby and diamond pendant, shaped like a ladder, to be made as a gift for his wife at Christmas. The challenge was that the commission was given on December 19th. Melanie made a succession of calls and managed to source the stones quickly. She called upon an overseas workshop to manufacture the piece – and was delighted to call the client on Christmas Eve to let him know the gift was ready. “We move mountains to make sure that the jewellery we create is really special and meets the brief. The main benefit is that every piece is unique and has the client’s own stamp. On top of that, the way the design and the materials are woven together can have deep meaning. The other strength is that it can evolve: we can rework a piece at any time.” One of Melanie’s customers, Helen Skipp, told us: “For me, jewellery has to have meaning. Melanie is great at listening to the story behind each piece we ask her to make, and interpreting that in her designs. That’s so important to us, as we want these pieces to be passed down to our children and grandchildren, along with the tale they tell.”
