3D PRINTING Recently, I have gained a depth of experience designing printable models for clients all over the country. Working with Sketchup and printing through Shapeways, 3D Printing Design has become second nature to me. Taking a client’s idea from napkin-sketch to the final print has been both satisfying and rewarding. Seen here is a selection of the objects I’ve designed and had printed over the past two years.

MILLENNIUM FALCON This version of the Millennium Falcon is one that has never before been replicated. No two models of the iconic ship are alike, and that goes for the fullscale movie prop that was built at Elstree Studios in the UK. The model seen here is a close study of the full-scale version. My work on this model has afforded me many opportunities for freelance work. Not only have I been commissioned for other work on the basis of the images I’ve posted, but some have even purchased plans of my model for the production of full-scale props of parts of the Millennium Falcon itself. Over the course of several years, this project has become my train-set — part master study, part consuming obsession, it has become a longstanding labor of love. Working from production blueprints used in the making of Star Wars, I began with just the cockpit. I posted much of my work on the popular model making webforum The RPF (Replica Prop Forum). From the cockpit, I extended my work into the rest of the interior, replicating the work of set designer Roger Christian piece by piece from movie stills, behind the scenes material, and more production blueprints. At some point in my work on the interior, it began to seem obvious that I would need the exterior as well. And from there I began to model various locations from the movies as backgrounds, replicating the actual soundstages used in filming.

HAWKMAN ROCKETCYCLE This project was commissioned by a Flash Gordon enthusiast in the UK. Chris King owned a 7" action figure of the titular character, made by Biff Bang Pow! Toys, but something was missing. In the 1980 movie, actor Sam Jones, as Flash Gordon, rides the Hawkman Rocketcycle. Chris knew he had to have a model of it to go along with his action figure. When he saw the work I was posting online, of my reproduction of the Millennium Falcon, he contacted and commissioned me. Over the course of six months, I designed a scale model in Sketchup. Working from nothing but movie screencaps, we slaved over every detail. The outcome of the project was a set of scale blueprints that Chris then took to practical model maker Pete Fielding. Pictured are the models as designed in Sketchup, portions of the blueprints, and the final model kit.

SKYHOPPER This obscure model featured in Star Wars very briefly, but left a lasting impression on die-hard fans. Designed by model maker Colin Cantwell, this small craft is something of a template for the aesthetic of spaceship design throughout the movie. Star Wars features a strong contrast between structural simplicity and dense exterior detail. I replicated the original model by using Sketchup’s native photomatch/photogrammetry tools. Matching the perspective of images, I was able to design the model in three-dimensional space directly over images of the original itself.
