Specifications for Reflective Materials for Fire Fighters’ Clothing The two main specifications to be aware of are EN 469:2005 and EN ISO 20471:2013
EN 469:2005 This standard typically relates to professional fire-fighting PPE worn during structural fire fighting to protect mainly against heat and flame. The performance requirements for clothing conforming to this standard include: · Flame spread (tested to ISO 15025) · Convective heat (tested to EN 367) · Radiant heat (tested to ISO 6942) · Heat resistance (tested to ISO 17493:2000) · Water repellence, dimensional stability, resistance to chemicals Photometric requirements for retroreflective materials are according to EN471 Table 5 (Level 2, separate performance materials, 330 table) or Table 7 (combined performance materials, 65 table). The minimum amount of separate performance retroreflective material is 0,13 m2, whereas the minimum amount of the fluorescent or combined performance material is 0,20 m2. Retroreflective materials must also pass the flame spread test and heat resistance test. The products must have a minimum value of retroreflection after the latter test.
EN ISO 20471:2013 EN ISO 20471:2013 is a European Standard which specifies the minimum performance requirements and test methods for professional high visibility clothing to keep you safe day and night. Performance requirements are included for colour and retroreflection as well as for the minimum areas and for the placement of the materials on protective clothing. Make sure your garment is compliant by looking for the CE mark on the label. Remember the brighter you are, the safer you are. Class 1 Class 1defines the lowest level of visibility · Fluorescent material ≥ 0,14 m2 · Retroreflective material ≥ 0,10 m2 or combined material fluorescent reflective 0,2 m2 Class 2 Class 2 defines intermediary visibility · 1 horizontal band and 2 shoulder bands or, 2 horizontal bands and 2 shoulder bands or, 2 horizontal bands · Trousers need 2 horizontal reflective bands on each leg · Bib and brace trousers: 1 horizontal band around the torso, 2 horizontal reflective bands on each leg · Fluorescent material ≥ 0,5 m2 · Retroreflective material ≥ 0,13 m2
Required for any person working on or near A and B class roads
Class 3 Class 3 defines the highest level of visibility · Same as class 2, but with full sleeves and 2 horizontal circular bands on each sleeve · Fluorescent material ≥ 0,8 m2 · Retroreflective material ≥ 0,2 m2 Required for any person working on or near motorways, dual carriageways or airports
Other Specifications: · EN ISO 15614:2007 relates to test methods and performance required for wildland fire fighting clothing. This includes a mandatory requirement for fluorescent and retroreflective material. · ISO 16073:2011 specifies the minimum performance requirements and methods of test for personal protective equipment (PPE) covering the torso, neck, arms, hands, legs, feet, head, eyes and hearing for wildland firefighting. It covers the general design of the PPE, the minimum levels of performance for the materials employed and the methods of test used. This PPE is not intended to provide protection during fire entrapment. · EN ISO 14116:2008 specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials and protective clothing. The aim is to reduce the possibility of a fire fighter’s clothing burning and causing injury. · EN 50354:2002 standard regulates heat and flame resistant clothing for workers exposed to electic arcs. A direct and constrained electric arc in a low voltage circuit is used to classify garments in defined arc protection classes.
