FINNLOG FUTURE

SUNLIGHT VILLA The Sun is the light that moulds the space around us. The Sun is the energy that makes the plants grow, and turns the living nature (incl. people) in its direction. The architecture of this Sunlight Villa “catches” the sunlight throughout the day. The perpetual Sun with its light keeps constantly designing new space inside the Sunlight Villa. The space inside the Sunshine Villa is continuously moving. The plans of the Villa take into account the client’s wishes – the silky warmth of the Sun caresses the terrace both

during one’s morning coffee, as well as the last evening hours. It is envisaged that views of ideal landscapes should be visible through the Sunlight Villa’s wide stained glass windows. The visual boarder between the interior and exterior spaces seems symbolic, but is also physically a few steps away. The one -storey villa that is positioned on sloped landscape is a mixed construction of rock, log, metal, and glass. The locally-mined rock gives the villa its visual

presence and creates a link with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homely feeling, and fills the air with nostalgic scents. The metal and glass materials enable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern designer-made robe. A Villa that presents the possibility of creating an ideal landscape with its plentiful options!

Enn Laansoo, the architect, has been working as a professional architect since 1982, after obtaining his M.Arch. from the Estonian Academy of Arts. During that time, Enn Laansoo has participated in or singularly authored many projects, like designing representative buildings for the Republic of Estonia, and planning the PAKRI Scientific and Industrial Park and a new city district in Paldiski, to name a few.

Another dear subject for him throughout the years has been the design of private residences and villas. This is the kind of work that lets the thoughts wonder freely, sharpens one’s mind and rejuvenates one’s spirit. This series of log house design solutions wishes to prove that the possibilities are endless, and that the result must not be typical.

About project This nearly 400m2 private log house has been divided into separate units that are based on their function – an entrance, living area, sleeping area, fitness area & spa. There are several variations in the utilisation of these units, all up to the client’s wishes. The sample room plan has taken into account the direction of the sun. The kitchen with the living area, and the fitness & spa units enjoy the morning sunrise. The inner garden, living area, fitness area & spa, entrance area, and all of the connecting corridors get the midday light. The living area and sauna catch a glimpse of the evening sunset. The U-shaped house plan may be used to create a private inner garden with rich greenery and a pool. The single-storey house has simple forms that are complimented by quality materials. The roof has a smooth plain clay stone finish, and the windows have stainless steel frames. The log-crossings at the corners have been tranformed into columns, covered with concretecomposite panels to change the traditonal log house look.

Kamp Arhitektid was founded in 2005. There are 3 partners / architects – Jan Skolimowski, Peeter Loo and Kaspar Kruuse. The areas of activity of Kamp Arhitektid include architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design and design. A lot of our work has come through competitions. Our por tfolio includes medium and small-sized

buildings and also large-scale objects, like a university building, a sports hall and office buildings. Like other Nordic countries, Estonia has a long tradition of wooden architecture. We at Kamp Arhitektid have a special interest in designing from wood and other renewable materials.

TETRIS The architecture is Nordicly sober and straight-lined, which is complemented by a subtle Mediterranean dimension. The building consists of two crossmounted volumes. The protruding parts of the second floor add playfulness to the house and make the facades exciting and tense. The core volume is supplemented by the carport, sleeping-guestroom block and a covered summer kitchen. The ground plan of the building is characterised by free-planning – a

living room, kitchen and dining room that are opened up to the combined roof. This is also where the vestibule with a wardrobe, a laundry/technical room and a toilet are located. The kitchen and dining room provide access to the pleasant roofed terrace, which can be converted into a sauna block, if required. The gallery provides access to the first floor bedroom block, which could act as a guestroom or an independent s t u d y / wo r k ro o m . N e a r t h e

entrance, there is a carport for two cars that can also be built into a closed garage, if the client wishes so. The second floor hall is surrounded by two bedrooms with balconies and adjoining bathrooms.

Arhitektibüroo OÜ architectural bureau. 2005-2012 The leading architect for Alarma architectural bureau . Since 2012 The leading architect/partner at ARH PLUSS OÜ architectural bureau. Most of Nikolai Volkov’s creation can be defined by various residential buildings and apartment buildings in Estonia and Russia. They are characterized by a feeling for the environment,

simple functional forms that take into account the locational specifics and do not strive to articulate themselves with only the use of the building material. In addition to the previous, Nikolai Volkov has designed numerous communal buildings (bureaus, business and manufacturing buildings). Nikolai Volkov has been successful in several architectural competitions.

The Design To make the house fit into different settings and environments, we created a two-layer facade that can be easily altered by covering the facade with different materials. The house has the visual qualities of two architecturally opposite buildings – a traditional log house and a more minimalist building. The outer shell is covered with light-coloured plywood, and the inner walls are built of Finnlamelli’s laminated logs that are manufactured with traditional log building techniques. This allows

for the house to be also built in city locations, where traditional log houses are not allowed to be built, according to the local building rules. The building is a single-family residence that consists of two building blocks – a single-storeyed sauna block and a two-storeyed living block. The design is flexible and can be easily converted to different building plots by rotating, flipping and mirroring the design. The entrance area divides the two

building blocks, so that the sauna, living and guest area can be used simultaneously, at the same time not conflicting with each other. The North-facing facade is more enclosed to minimize heat loss through windows, and thereby enhance energy efficiency. The South-facing courtyard side is more open to the surroundings. Terraces and balconies opening in different directions make it possible to enjoy the sun and landscape all day and all year around. Design team: Martin Kinks, Erkki Annama, Risto Parve

further. Our goal is architecture that fits – the people, the context, and the environment...

Our work covers everything from public buildings to private housing. Always working as a team – we believe that creative solutions improve significantly. We like to collaborate with people of different professional backgrounds to always keep developing our design

Wood as a material has always been in our focus. For us, it is the honesty of the material that attracts. Wood needs no strengthening, covering, finishing, if used wisely. Wood by itself has all the qualities of a superior material. Building with wood is a friendly solution, to us and

to the environment. It feels good, smells good. The broad range of visual appearances makes wood a very interesting material to work with. Thus, we gladly accepted the offer of designing a house for Finnlamelli Estonia.

The house got wings! The main idea behind this project is to follow long traditions of loghouse architecture while still providing modern and contemporary aesthetic that matches the needs of nowadays people. By link ing the traditions with contemporary architecture the house becomes suitable for many

different surroundings. The wooden house is based on the 3x5,4 m unit. Without losing overall concept it provides different opportunities to adjust the volume of the building or the space program according to the needs of inhabitant.

The proposed solution is suitable for a family of 4-6 members. The house is divided into three different zones: on the right wing there are mainly bedrooms, on the left auxiliary rooms and in the middle the spacious livingroom with kitchen and dining. Livingroom is the "heart" of the building. High ceiling and large glass windows gives „air“ and if possible, offers stunning views to the surrounding. Livingroom can be opened to the private terrace protected by two wings of the building. Livingroom ceiling becomes smoothly eaves which breaks boundaries between internal and external even more. In

the middle of the livingroom there is an open fireplace that divides the livingroom into different zones and creates warm feeling of home. The best solution would be when longest side of the house is oriented to the south or north. In summertime the salient roof protects the livingroom against direct and excessive sunlight while in wintertime the sun gives passive energy through large windows. In both exterior and interior there has been used natural and dignified materials such as wood – logs and plywood, stone and steel.

TOWNHOUSE The traditional-looking log house stands innovatively out with its unusual glass facade that enables to fit this type of houses also into the city environment. The facades of the building are articulated, with added playfulness from the terraces and balconies. The freeform planning, open rooms and e x te n s i ve g l a s s s u r f a ce s – stretching from the floor to the ceiling – flood the room with air and light. Traditional functional rooms are planned on the first floor of the residence. The living room

forms the core of the building, being located next to a separated kitchendining room that has access to the terrace. On the right side of the hall, there is a technical room and a sauna block that is also directly accessible from the outside. A carport has been planned for the car. The second floor facilitates the private section of the house, built around a hall that leads to three bedrooms and a study. Each bedroom has its personal shower, wardrobe and balcony.

MILLION DOLLAR VIEW VILLA F

There are countless properties around the world that possess a “Million Dollar View”. The design of this villa, with its wide panoramic views from the interior spaces and the balconies, brings the beauty of the outside world to the inside, and into the hearts of the inhabitants. The two-storey villa with a lower ground floor, which would fit perfectly on a beach or high upon a slope, is a mixed construction of rock, log, metal, and glass. The locally-mined rock gives the villa its visual presence and creates a link

with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homely feeling, and fills the air with nostalgic scents. The metal and glass materials enable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern designer-made robe. A villa that is the stuff that dreams are made of!
