During its ten years of business, Finnlamelli Eesti OĂœ has erected houses in Scandinavia, the rest of Europe and Russia. Managing on the international market requires substantial product development investments, as the idea of a person's home may vary significantly in different countries. Perfecting a product means also paying attention to the local rules and legislation. The several quality researches that have been conducted in co-operation with universities have given us an infallible knowledge of the fact that we are able to fulfil the requirements of even the most demanding customers. Success can be achieved only with committed professionals, who are not emotionless in their work, but desire to offer the client their best. Objectives alone are not enough. One requires the internal will to arrange things in a manner that makes building a home a well-paced journey for the contracting party. Everything in this world is changing – also the architecture. Log house construction is usually regarded in a traditional key. Most picture an old threshing barn, where a taller person might hit one’s head, if standing up straight, or a grass/haulm roof in its true archaic form - reminding of the heavy burden of life of the ancient farmer. Things are quite different in modern days. Modern log-architecture preserves the best traditions, but frees its creator from fixed frames. This catalogue has been created in co-operation with Estonian architects, whose task was to create a future concept, in form and content, for the log house. Also, the technical solutions have been worked out, so that the designed buildings would not only decorate this edition, but would enable someone to enjoy their novelty. I hope that the catalogue in your hands is an experience for you, and provides a modern and in-depth view into log house construction.

Portfolio
Kamp Arhitektid was founded in 2005. There are 3 partners / architects – Jan Skolimowski, Peeter Loo and Kaspar Kruuse. The areas of activity of Kamp Arhitektid include architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design and design. A lot of our work has come through competitions. Our portfolio includes medium and small-sized buildings and also large-scale objects, like a university building, a sports hall and office buildings. Like other Nordic countries, Estonia has a long tradition of wooden architecture. We at Kamp Arhitektid have a special interest in designing from wood and other renewable materials.
E R U T U F About the project This nearly 400m2 private log house has been divided into separate units that are based on their function – an entrance, living area, sleeping area, fitness area & spa. There are several variations in the utilisation of these units, all up to the client’s wishes. The sample room plan has taken into account the direction of the sun. The kitchen with the living area, and the fitness & spa units enjoy the morning sunrise. The inner garden, living area, fitness area & spa, entrance area, and all of the connecting corridors get the mid-day light. The living area and sauna catch a glimpse of the evening sunset. The U-shaped house plan may be used to create a private inner garden with rich greenery and a pool. The single-storey house has simple forms that are complimented by quality materials. The roof has a smooth plain clay stone finish, and the windows have stainless steel frames. The log-crossings at the corners have been tranformed into columns, covered with concrete-composite panels to change the traditonal log house look.

E R U T U F About the project TOWNHOUSE . The traditional-looking log house stands innovatively out with its unusual glass facade that enables to fit this type of houses also into the city environment. The facades of the building are articulated, with added playfulness from the terraces and balconies. The free-form planning, open rooms and extensive glass surfaces – stretching from the floor to the ceiling – flood the room with air and light. Traditional functional rooms are planned on the first floor of the residence. The living room forms the core of the building, being located next to a separated kitchen-dining room that has access to the terrace. On the right side of the hall, there is a technical room and a sauna block that is also directly accessible from the outside. A carport has been planned for the car. The second floor facilitates the private section of the house, built around a hall that leads to three bedrooms and a study. Each bedroom has its personal shower, wardrobe and balcony.

R E U T F U
E R U T U F About the project TETRIS The architecture is Nordicly sober and straight-lined, which is complemented by a subtle Mediterranean dimension. The building consists of two cross-mounted volumes. The protruding parts of the second floor add playfulness to the house and make the facades exciting and tense. The core volume is supplemented by the carport, sleeping-guestroom block and a covered summer kitchen. The ground plan of the building is characterised by free-planning – a living room, kitchen and dining room that are opened up to the combined roof. This is also where the vestibule with a wardrobe, a laundry/ technical room and a toilet are located. The kitchen and dining room provide access to the pleasant roofed terrace, which can be converted into a sauna block, if required. The gallery provides access to the first floor bedroom block, which could act as a guestroom or an independent study/ work room. Near the entrance, there is a carport for two cars that can also be built into a closed garage, if the client wishes so. The second floor hall is surrounded by two bedrooms with balconies and adjoining bathrooms.

Joel Kopli is an architect who graduated from the Tallinn University of Technology, majoring in Architecture, and the Estonian Academy of Arts, majoring in Architecture and Urban Design. Joel is one of the three architects (together with Koit Ojaliiv and Juhan Rohtla) who are known as KUU architects (KUU arhitektid). With successful showings at many architectural competitions in the recent years, KUU has received increasing attention on the Estonian architecture landscape. Their projects vary from small scale temporary installations to buildings of various type and scale, as well as urban design. Currently, the most important projects that have received wider international attention are the Estonian pavilion titled “Koda” at Floriade 2012 in Venlo, Netherlands, presenting the winning proposal for the competition for the Communism Victims’ Memorial in Paldiski, Estonia, and the Marriott hotel in Riga, Latvia. E R U T U F About the project
The wooden house is based on a 3x5.4m unit. Without losing its overall concept, it provides different possibilities for adjusting the volume of the building or the space scheme to the needs of the inhabitant. The proposed solution is suitable for a family with 4-6 members. The house is divided into three different zones: on the right wing the main bedrooms, on the left the auxiliary rooms and in the middle the spacious living room with a kitchen and a dining room.

The house has got wings! The main idea behind this project is to follow the long traditions of log house architecture, while still providing modern and contemporary aesthetics that match the needs of contemporary people. By linking the traditions with contemporary architecture, the house becomes suitable for many different surroundings.
The living room is the "heart" of the building. The high ceiling and large glass windows give a feeling of space, and if possible, offer stunning views of the surroundings. The living room can be opened up to the private terrace, which is protected by two wings of the building. The living room ceiling flows smoothly to the eaves that further break the boundaries between the internal and external spaces. In the middle of the living room, there is an open fireplace that divides the living room into different zones and creates a warm homely feeling. The best solution would be, if the longest side of the house could be oriented to the South or to the North. In summertime, the salient roof protects the living room from direct and excessive sunlight, while in wintertime, the sun gives passive energy through the large windows. In both the exterior and the interior, natural and dignified materials – such as timber (logs and plywood), stone and steel – have been used. Gross area 291 m2 / Net area 246 m2

E R U T U F About the project
The Design
KARISMA architects, founded in 2008 by four young architects is an Estonian architectural design studio.
To make the house fit into different settings and environments, we created a two-layer facade that can be easily altered by covering the facade with different materials. The house has the visual qualities of two architecturally opposite buildings – a traditional log house and a more minimalist building. The outer shell is covered with light-coloured plywood, and the inner walls are built of Finnlamelli’s laminated logs that are manufactured with traditional log building techniques. This allows for the house to be also built in city locations, where traditional log houses are not allowed to be built, according to the local building rules.
Our work covers everything from public buildings to private housing. Always working as a team – we believe that creative solutions improve significantly. We like to collaborate with people of different professional backgrounds to always keep developing our design further. Our goal is architecture that fits – the people, the context, and the environment... Wood as a material has always been in our focus. For us, it is the honesty of the material that attracts. Wood needs no strengthening, covering, finishing, if used wisely. Wood by itself has all the qualities of a superior material. Building with wood is a friendly solution, to us and to the environment. It feels good, smells good. The broad range of visual appearances makes wood a very interesting material to work with. Thus, we gladly accepted the offer of designing a house for Finnlamelli Estonia. Martin Kinks Architect, partner
The building is a single-family residence that consists of two building blocks – a single-storeyed sauna block and a two-storeyed living block. The design is flexible and can be easily converted to different building plots by rotating, flipping and mirroring the design. The entrance area divides the two building blocks, so that the sauna, living and guest area can be used simultaneously, at the same time not conflicting with each other. The North-facing facade is more enclosed to minimize heat loss through windows, and thereby enhance energy efficiency. The South-facing courtyard side is more open to the surroundings. Terraces and balconies opening in different directions make it possible to enjoy the sun and landscape all day and all year around. Design team: Martin Kinks, Erkki Annama, Risto Parve

Enn Laansoo

Portfolio
Enn Laansoo, the architect, has been working as a professional architect since 1982, after obtaining his M.Arch. from the Estonian Academy of Arts. During that time, Enn Laansoo has participated in or singularly authored many projects, like designing representative buildings for the Republic of Estonia, and planning the PAKRI Scientific and Industrial Park and a new city district in Paldiski, to name a few. Another dear subject for him throughout the years has been the design of private residences and villas. This is the kind of work that lets the thoughts wonder freely, sharpens one’s mind and rejuvenates one’s spirit. This series of log house design solutions wishes to prove that the possibilities are endless, and that the result must not be typical.
E R U T U F About the project Million Dollar View Villa There are countless properties around the world that possess a “Million Dollar View”. The design of this villa, with its wide panoramic views from the interior spaces and the balconies, brings the beauty of the outside world to the inside, and into the hearts of the inhabitants. The two-storey villa with a lower ground floor, which would fit perfectly on a beach or high upon a slope, is a mixed construction of rock, log, metal, and glass. The locally-mined rock gives the villa its visual presence and creates a link with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homely feeling, and fills the air with nostalgic scents. The metal and glass materials enable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern designer-made robe. A villa that is the stuff that dreams are made of!
Transparent Residence There are often situations, where the plot seems to be upside down. The access road approaches the plot from the South. The terrain slopes down towards the North, and this is also the direction, which offers the most stunning views. A solution to this problem could be a “transparent house”. The architecture of the two-storey residence, which’ cellar floor has been positioned on the back slope, has two characteristic volumes. The two-storey volume is located on the morning side, and it facilitates the bedrooms with bathrooms, a kitchen, a vestibule, and the central stairway. The light reaches the rooms through the windows that open to all directions. The one-storey volume is on the side of the evening sun, and it facilitates a living room on three separate surfaces that follows the terrain of the plot, which slopes towards the North. The one-storey volume has got window-openings, as well as a terrace spanning to all three sides – the South, West and North.
The living room is supplied with natural sunlight from the afternoon till the sunset. The living room and the terrace are the places, where usually the evenings are spent. The roof of the one-storey volume is articulated to provide the living room with more sunlight from the South, and to create the look of a homely down-to-Earth house by following the terrain of the plot. The articulated roof of the two-storey volume tries to fit the solution of the one-storey volume. Because of the slotted look of the onestorey volume, the residence might be considered transparent. The transparent residence is a mixed construction of rock, log, metal, and glass. The locally-mined rock gives the villa its visual presence and creates a link with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homely feeling, and fills the air with nostalgic scents. The metal and glass materials enable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern designer-made robe.

E R U T U F About the project Sunlight Villa The Sun is the light that moulds the space around us. The Sun is the energy that makes the plants grow, and turns the living nature (incl. people) in its direction. The architecture of this Sunlight Villa “catches” the sunlight throughout the day. The perpetual Sun with its light keeps constantly designing new space inside the Sunlight Villa. The space inside the Sunshine Villa is continuously moving. The plans of the Villa take into account the client’s wishes – the silky warmth of the Sun caresses the terrace both during one’s morning coffee, as well as the last evening hours. It is envisaged that views of ideal landscapes should be visible through the Sunlight Villa’s wide stained glass windows. The visual boarder between the interior and exterior spaces seems symbolic, but is also physically a few steps away. The one-storey villa that is positioned on sloped landscape is a mixed construction of rock, log, metal, and glass. The locallymined rock gives the villa its visual presence and creates a link with the regional building traditions. The log construction creates a homely feeling, and fills the air with nostalgic scents. The metal and glass materials enable elegant constructional solutions, and clothe the villa in a modern designer-made robe. A Villa that presents the possibility of creating an ideal landscape with its plentiful options!

I have graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts (formerly the Estonian National Institute of Arts) in 1986, majoring in architecture. Since that time I have been working as an architect, with my first posting at the National Institute of Cultural Monument Restoration and Design. Since 1991, in the architecture bureau founded with my partner J端ri Soolep, we have designed countless different buildings, both in regard to their volume and function. Covering everything from private residences, manufacturing buildings, administrative buildings, and recreational centres (spas). I have also been actively working on interior designs and plans.
E R U T U F About the project Home is an inviting and safe place for everyone, where the presence of wooden materials ensures the daily contentment and ease of mind. Timber is a very agreeable and warm material. When designing this house, I visioned a more extensive plot than usual. The street-side exterior door opens into a corridor, which is like a long street, where the living spaces are located on the sunny side and the technical and auxiliary rooms on the shady side. The room space or floor space on the shady side can be increased according to the owner’s needs. The street-corridor ends on a plaza, meaning the living room, which is partially opened to the slightly zoned kitchen-dining room. The kitchen and bedrooms are separated by a sauna block that forms a conceptual whole with the gym located across the corridor. The length of the corridor can be adapted to the home owner’s wishes and requirements. The corridor is extended and shortened in accordance with the number of rooms and size of the floor space needed. The size of the living room and kitchen are also adjustable – the house becomes either shorter or longer.
By adding a stairway on one side of the corridor, the one-storey building can be complemented by a partial second floor with bedrooms, a balcony and a roof terrace. The volume of the second floor can be modified according to the needed floor space and the owner’s original task. The bedrooms, sauna, kitchen, and living room on the sunny side open onto the terraces. The terraces – with or without a roof – are fitting features for this house. The layout of the terraces is characterized by small plants and furniture, and supported by the greenery on the plot. The trees, bushes and herbs join the terrace, and when utilizing planting boxes, may even stretch to the exterior walls of the building. The shape and measurements of the pool designed for the terrace may be modified according to the house owner’s wishes and pool technology. On the other side of the living room fireplace wall, there is a roofed terrace space with an outside fireplace. The core volume of the dark-gray standing seam roof of the log house is sloped to one side. The higher edge of the slope is finished with a parapet and the lower
edge has been left open as an eave on unconcealed beams. The edge of the parapet and the parts of the exterior wall that are located above the windows have been finished with wooden battens – like the lattices and balcony railings. The cross-joint corners of the log walls can be trimmed back and covered with cover boards. For the boundary boards surrounding the fillings, also thick and wide rafters are used. The technical rooms of the building and the parking spaces’ canopies on the shady side of the corridor have been finished with a stone lining on the outside. The graphite-gray timber facades are well complimented with black bricks and black joints. The windows are tinted gray and framed in graphite-gray. The exterior door of the house has been fitted with a gray glass panel and a long pipe-handle. The exterior stairs in front of the main entrance have been finished with burnt granite. The concrete stone pavement in front of the building has been compiled of gray and black quadrangular stones laid down in alternating stripes.
