Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) is one of the more frequently used terms in the agricultural sector in recent times. DataGene has released a new index - the so-called “Sustainability Index” (SI) in the recent Australian August proof release. The SI places greater emphasis on traits that reduce emissions intensity, such as production, survival and feed saved.

Australian Proof Results Holstein BPI Highlights
The health and fertility specialist in ABS Jeronimo continues to hold the mantle as the #1 BPI sire in Australia with an impressive 515 BPI. Whilst short on workability data but having 146 herd recorded daughters Fon Doo (ST) would feature at #2 ranked at 460 BPI. He experienced some exceptional lift all over the production component of his proof. Our feedback in the field is that they are certainly some of the heaviest milking young cows that farmers have seen for a long time. The legacy of Fon Doo will continue for many years, somewhat similar to another industry icon production sire in the late 80’s in Glenafton Enhancer. It is unfortunate that due to reducing numbers of young sires being sampled that Fon Doo may never have the opportunity to sire the next generation.
Pole Position following the August ABV Release Genetics Australia’s position once again strengthen following the breeding values released by DataGene for August 2022. A debut BPI of 318 on his first 68 daughters is a promising start. The Jersey breed continue to assemble a great range of polled sires. One of the newer sires to watch going forward is Stark PP (GAC). This Pixstar P son may have semen available later in the year and could really impact the Jersey breed being a homozygous PP sire.

The latest ABV release revealed ABS JERONIMO P as the sire of 16 of 17 of the nation’s top ranked Holstein cows, on the Balanced Performance Index (BPI). Even the one cow – number 14 - that isn’t directly sired by JERONIMO P, was out of a JERONIMO P cow, bred by another ABS sire Bomaz EPISODE. ABS Australia Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said this ABV release was “history in the making”. “I can safely say now, from a profit perspective, as he is known for his health traits, polled gene, and productivity, JERONIMO P is ABS Australia’s most successful sire in the past two decades. He’s eclipsed one of the all-time farmer favourites, MVP. That is massive.” With a BPI$ of 459 DG CHARLEY is Australia’s number two Holstein proven bull. This world-renowned sire of sons came in at number eight on the new Australian Sustainability Index (SI), while his genomic son Pine-Tree DURABLE – with an SI ranking of 1017 - was second. DURABLE has a 511 BPI$ and is ranked number six on the global Interbull index. CHARLEY has “extreme” breed leading Fertility of 113, 106 Mastitis Resistance, 110 Survival, and is backed by moderate type. ABS also has the highest ranked polled Jersey with Balnageith JANGO P. As a member of DataGene’s Genetic Evaluation Standing Committee, Tim had a sneak preview of how the Sustainability Index works. He said the Sustainability Index addresses the need for a combination of animal longevity and production to reduce emissions intensity. But he won’t be relying on breeding alone to improve his farm’s sustainability.“It’s a combination of management overlayed with genetics that’s going to drive the change,” Tim said.
DataGene Stakeholder Relations Specialist, Peter Thurn, said breeding for reduced greenhouse gas emission intensity didn’t mean compromising on other traits which underpin on-farm profitability.“The Sustainability Index is highly correlated with the Balanced Performance Index (BPI); the top bulls on one, will be highly ranked on the other,” he said. This is calculated by dividing the amount of carbon emitted by the amount of milk produced. The reduction in emission intensity is achieved through a combination of dilution and increased efficiency, higher milk production from longer lived,more feed efficient cows means more milk per tonne of carbon,” Mr Thurn said.
South West Victorian dairy farmer, Tim Humphris is looking forward to using the Sustainability Index in conjunction with other on-farm practices to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from his 550-cow herd.

AUSTRALIAN dairy farmers can now use breeding to help reduce their farm’s greenhouse gas emissions. DataGene has introduced a new standalone breeding index called the Sustainability Index included in its August release of Australian Breeding Values. This third Australian breeding index will fast-track genetic gain for greenhouse gas emission intensity reduction. The Sustainability Index ranks bulls according to their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase milk production while also considering other vital profitability traits. The Sustainability Index is one of many tools dairy farmers can use to achieve the industry’s commitment of a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions on-farm by 2030.
