“The moment you stop and look around, you will get to know that you have so many small moments full of happiness. So just be thankful, as many others don’t have these moments. There are also some who do, but can’t visualize them; and even some who have, but can’t appreciate them.” -10 Golden Steps of Life-

Praise to The Great Almighty, the author of knowledge and wisdom, for His countless love, gifts and because of His own will, for giving me the strength to ride over the duration of 2 years pursuing Masters and 4 years in Bachelor’s Degree, manage to graduate on time and finish this architectural portfolio. The finishing of this endeavor couldn’t have been conceivable without the experts’ supervision, consolation and comprehension of numerous incredible individuals whose names may not all be stated. I owe a million credit to them who helped and bolstered me amid this portfolio. To ibu, babah, Iki, Ami, Athi, Ali and Tini: thank you for everything. Thank you for being there while I need it. Special thanks to my supervisor, En. Fairuz Reza Razali for his kind assist, support, and his guidance in the preparation of this journey towards the completion. I would like to thank other lecturers as well

‘Age of Cataclysm: Human Repercussion’ is referring to disasters resulting from manmade hazards as opposed to natural disasters resulting from natural hazards that lead to civilian population’s casualties, loss of property, loss of basic services. The cause of a human-made disaster can be either intentional or unintentional human actions. Humanmade disasters or emergencies can be fast or of slow attack. Human-made disaster involves an element of human intent, negligence, and error; or involving a failure of a manmade system. The demand for awareness is needed among Malaysian, not only be aware of one’s surroundings and events but also attempt to seek answers. MoCCULT showed how the building can create a “Resolution” in a “Conflict”, through formal and informal cultivation.

Pulau Pinang, Malaysia is geographically located outside the pacific ring of fire. Therefore, it is relatively free from certain severe crises found in neighbouring countries. However, Pulau Pinang is still vulnerable to natural hazards including floods, forest fires, tsunami, cyclonic storms, landslides, and haze. Additionally, the effects of climate change have resulted in an increasing amount of climate-related disasters, resulting in a newfound threat to Malaysia’s health and development.

CONPENDIUM 278. architecture portfolio.

The threat leads to other issues which are post-disaster vulnerability (psychological pain, trauma & anxiety), flood relief operation by the government is reactive as the government will only act after the disaster occurred and did not see the policy as the preparation for the future (Chan, 2012). Furthermore, the top-down approach; less public participation as Tierney (1989) stressed that mitigation may fail because the government exclusively used technical expertise and did not take into account social factors. The biggest factor in why people refuse to prepare is the normalcy bias, it’s when people in denial that protects the mind from anything too far from an established baseline of safety C o m p e n d i u m 2 7 8 . // F i r d a u s R a f i e // M a s t e r o f A r c h i t e c t u r e : R I B A P a r t I I // S T U D I O PA D U // c - 2 0 1 9

Penang is one of the many rapidly industrialising states in Malaysia with a largely urban populace. In recent decades, efforts at industrialisation and the development of other economic sectors have been intensified, leading to greater urbanisation and greater pressures on land. Although land reclamation has eased the pressures somewhat, it is not enough to satisfy the high demand for land on the island. As such, developers have turned to the remaining hill land on the island. Many hills and their environs are already being developed and many hill projects are in the pipe line. This has led to many environmental problems such as deforestation, decimation of water catchments, destruction of endangered fauna and flora, soil erosion, landslides, water pollution, sedimentation and downstream flooding. Some of these problems have been exacerbated and turned into disasters due to the extremely fragile and sensitive nature of hill ecosystems.

DTC2i: Darul Takzim Cybercrime Correctional Institute is a transformation of new vertical prison typology which mainly focused on countering cyber crime. As the data indicate that cybercrime is growing in Malaysia, based on statistics from CyberSecurity Malaysia shows it will be increasingly challenging due to the exponential growth of connected devices. Data from Cybercrime Malaysia, an agency under the Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry, show a total of 2,428 cybercrime incidences reported between January and April last year (2017). By critical importance that necessary provision safeguards in regards to the use of technology while still providing opportunities for offenders to participate in meaningful, sustainable, healthy and rehabilitative programming for the current and future urban city. To rehabilitate the city of Johor Bahru, distinctively, technologically and economically, throughout the use of a correctional institute tower. A tower consisting of modular Panopticon cell pods that flexible can be added when the demand arises, or can be subtracted, when the inmate’s population decreases. The cell pods then relocate to other parts of the city to serve another function.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES +THEORIES.

TRANSPARENCY

PANOPCITISM

Kintsukuroi

Approach through permeability and fluidity of the space. Division is not done by conventional physical dividers; walls, partition, column. Division is separate by light streaks that control the boundaries.

Originally developed by Michel Foucault; improvised by Jeremy Bentham (Panapticon design); improvised again by Shoshana Zuboff (+information technology)

It treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

vanishing the barriers

Have equal agency to access all zones from all directions at every point in building. Disrupts the conventional semiotic umderstandingof space; association of meaning via visual. Phenomenal Transparency; a conceptual transparency, where induction of a quality inherent in the spatial or volumetric organization (Rowe & Slutzky, 1982). It lessen the barrier between inmatespublic; seamless context. Transparency means a simultaneous perception of different spatial locations. Space not only recedes but fluctuates in a continuous activity. Permeability; where invisible boundaries that permit things to pass through or to be seen through. This concept permits persons within and outside a space to perceive the immediate physical world around themselves, including social transparency.

work environment punishment

As a means of surveillance, and discipline. A data keeps track of a worker by assigning him/her tasks to perform during their shift is recorded. All this is monitored by supervision from a server. Based on the data, the supervisor can monitor a worker’s performance and take any necessary action when needed. Panopticon allows a watchman to observe occupants without the occupants knowing whether or not they are being watched. “Visibility is a trap”.

the art of repairing

Rather than the broken pieces being only destructive, the moment we realize they are also constructive, we cross the threshold from the impossible to the possible. The moment we do this we are on the way to transforming what is broken into something beautiful. Urban healing concept of human; selfaccepting towards good life. Applicable to inmates’ life.

Johor Bahru is located along the Straits of Johor at the southern end of Peninsular Malaysia. The city Johor bahru is going transformation, regarding zoning of areas and spaces. With many areas being abandoned, it is useful to think about architecture that is flexible according to economic needs.

As part of the rehabilitation process, a Cybercrime Correctional Institute Tower is proposed to counter the cybercrime problems. The tower comprises of modular Panopticon cell cases that is easily adaptable to different situations and can be added when the request emerges, or subtracted, when the prisoner’s population diminishes. The cell pods are also made flexible and movable to different correctional institutes as and when it is needed. The overall aim is to reduce the inmate population and with the help from the government and nongovernment organisations and its location within the urban context and made vertical, it is hoped to minimise the spread of cybercrime activities within the Johor Bahru City.

Amygdala:Metaf[LXX] is an approach to reawaken the interconnection between the stiff district with inhabitant liveliness, contrary from the conventional spaces provided. As the strategy to enhance the user’s zeal experience with a prospective time, starting from the nucleus of the locus then sprawling out the spark throughout the waterfront area with different type of public realm. With population growth increasing the pressure on transport and open spaces, the public realm will need to perform better as well, providing for the fluidity, movement, and activeness of more people and a greater resilience of impromptu environment. In sustainable environmental, the urban design is to help clean the ocean with enhancement of water-filtering infrastructures, or eco-boulevards—an idea that have been working on through several projects—pre-treat storm water runoff. Eco-boulevards are connected to additional water-filtering infrastructures such as tree-lined feeder roads, storm-water parks, and in-block rain gardens. Together, the streets and open green spaces are a porous framework of sub-bowls that naturally absorb and clean rainwater before [it enters] the ocean. water infrastructure has the capability to unlock questions of how to best shape urban form and support healthy lifestyles. Today, the ways in which cities address their water challenges will be critical to their ability to prosper and grow.

JOHOR Bahru, capital of the country’s southernmost state, has gone through a tremendous transformation and revitalisation over the past few years. Prior to that, the heart of the old city had fallen into decline with the opening of the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex. According to architect Johan Ropi, this was because places such as the Lumba Kuda flats, Kampung Ungku Mohsin and Bukit Cagar recreation park were demolished to make way for the complex. The Iskandar Malaysia Comprehensive Development Plan spells out the way forward. Chapter 13 of the report, for instance, is a 22-page proposal to build a central business district (CBD) or in Johor Bahru context is called Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) that will put Johor Bahru on the world map.

Write-up

Society and architecture have always been an indivisible binomial: the architecture of a moment cannot be understood without understanding its society, and architecture at the same time speaks of the essence of society. Socio economic effect, architecture and environment always has to respond to each other. As in when architecture for public use only responds to certain socio economic class it creates more imbalance in the society which is not good. Even in case it responds to all the classes of the society, on the other side, it might does not respond to environmental condition. “Architects are at the service of rich people,” said Indira Aryarathne of the Institute for Participatory Interaction in Development. “Just as you cater to multi-millionaires, the poors and meagers need our services, too.” Faith in architectures power to change human behavior is being restored but perhaps with a little more caution to not make the same outlandish claims for social change as before. The fact is that environments do affect us, but the question is, is it of whether by design or it just happened eventually? Design may be able to mitigate the symptoms or experiences of problems like segregation, crime or disinvestment by altering the patterns of the built environment or changing its perception visually. But to solve economic decline, poverty, racism, or discrimination; these problems are structural, defined by our values, policies, economic practices and laws. Although architecture can took part in solving it, but it needs further exploration and detail to understand the real limits of what design can accomplish with understanding the true causes of some of society’s problems.
