Evolve

R J E

The beginning of the process was to create 40 thumbnails of monograms using different styles of the Deja Vu Font. After the first thumbnails we were to choose our top two designs. The evolving step was very different from my regular process, usually I only do a few thumbnails. In doing the 40 thumbnails I found myself taking my design further and discovering possibilities that I wouldn’t have thought to look at.

GRID

Choose a magazine and analyze the underlying grid.Learn about using the grid to visually organize information by analyzing a magazine layout.

12

Grid

Cover

Contents

Esquire Magazine is a leader in Magazine covers. Although now, the magazine isn`t nearly as interesting as it used to be, they are still pushing boundaries and making things new...

The grid on the contents page is similar to the cover. Here the informations grid overlaps with the image. In a way it is still following the grid of the image because visually the two connect with each other.

The cover uses a very generic composition. Character on the right covering the magazine name.

Compositionally the page is very uneven. There is lots of space given to the image but the image has lots of negative space which makes the page very airy. With the information pushed so tightly to the side and so much room given to the image the page feels uneven.

There is a very simple grid at the top where the information is kept very contained. As your eyes move down the page on the left the information is following the grid of the person. It follows the outline of the person changing to fit the space. This is a pattern Esquire has developed where in the past they have used hand drawn type on the cover. This style is very organic and random. The same idea is applied as the text doesn’t follow a pattern and is working with the character.

Either the picture will need to give less space or the contents gotta get some more, but this page is not doing it for me. A NOTE is that there is a second contents page using the same grid and image style. It would have been much better for the two pages to have combined into one.

Page Spread-One The grid used here utilizes space to display lots of information. There are lots of things being shown but they are presented in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the reader.

between the two grids. On the right hand side an enlargement of a quotation breaks the grid and adds a bit of excitement and irregularity as a reader eyes must move around it.

On the left and right hand side the grid is used as a separate topic space. Here a related article is shown using regular patterns in the grid that creates a consistency and unity. This shows that the two side are a related article.

Having formality in a pages grid creates a good composition, which is easy for a reader to understand. Especially in a cooking for idiots article that needs to give as much help to the reader as it can.

In the centre grid a second article is shown in a mirror image. The grid is broken into four equal parts and the information is evenly distributed 13

Grid

14

Grid

Page Spread-Two 10

Design Permutations

A few pages earlier an article uses the same grid system. Here the grid is used the same way. There is a smaller grid on the left holding information from a continuing article. On the right side the two grids are now connected for a second article. The centre grid is still broken up into four even quarters. On the left inner grid the grid is broken up into many smaller grids. This is done to include information in a list form. It is

a system used in many other recipe books for quick and precise reading of ingredients. On the bottom right side a new grid is introduced where it doesn’t follow the grid. The new grid is much tighter it lists lots of information in point form. This article breaks the outer border and continues onto the next page.

HIERARCHY

Hierarchy

Process Before I started with the thumbnails I moved around the body text around to understand how much room it takes up. After I was able to understand the use of font styles and sizes I began with thumbnails. Mainly I tried to move the text around images. But with the large amount of text(as seen below) I was overwhelmed and felt stuck and unable to move forward.

Drafts

Although my last draft wasn’t a huge success it had a large influence on my final poster.

Hierarchy

Reading from the top left to bottom right for the pictures below you can see my slow development. I started off in a very uniform pattern. It seems like I resorted to my only knowledge of page layout which is a resume. A shitty one at that.

At a point I was feeling very miserable about the fact that I hadn’t made a decent poster yet. I worked at blocking out text because of the fact that most of the information wasn`t needed.

17

My six drafts were a failure. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and figuring out how to prioritize it. A major problem of mine was understanding how I could fit in all of the information and also fit a picture in.

18

Hierarchy

Chosen Draft

6

I chose to continue with this draft because I started to understand the use of font sizes and weights. I used the understanding from the grid in the Esquire cover to move the text around the figure as a natural grid.

Runner Up This was a poster I created after designing my final because I felt I didn’t gain a full grasp on hierarchy and wanted to focus fully on it. To better understand hierarchy I designed a second poster that focussed entirely on the Text. I think this is also a very strong poster. I tells a different side of jazz, a cooler slower side. The problem with this is that I doesn’t reflect the music of the bands.

Final Design

I hand painted Jazz Labs at the top left to contrast the image. Without this the rest of the text was overpowered by the image and was lost. By the end I felt I gained a new skill of Hierarchy and was able to apply it to my past skills to create a very strong poster.

Hierarchy

A problem that I had with the photographs that were given was that they didn’t represent the music. After listening to the music I decided the only way I could truly represent the music was by adding jazz. I did this by painting lettering moving around the womans face; it added the soul and movement that I was looking for.

To connect the rest of the text to the image I painted a grey wash trying to keep to the same tonel level.

19

After learning in class that information can be read at 8-10pt on a poster I immediately reduced the size of my text and felt the air flow around the page.

FIV E WORD

PLAY

Using a given noun and adjective, use typographic design toadapt the noun so that it communicates the idea of the adjective.

22

Word Play

Useful Al Qaeda Noun

Process I found this word combination very difficult to work with. The Al Qaeda holds such a strong meaning that it seemed like anything I tried to put it with backfired on me. I had ideas about turning it into a propaganda poster, even creating the meaning for a person from Al Qaeda to understand. Maybe an Al Qaeda person seeing their members shooting some would see it as being useful.

Adjective

After discussing my final design in class there were many hidden messages that I didn’t notice. The fact that it could look like the World Trade Centres to one and a penis to another. I think that my design could have been further developed and it would have had a stronger representation. I think the point where I was not able to achieve a good design was in my thumbnails and pre planning where I didn’t expand on my ideas and went with one of my first designs.

Transportation

Process

The mode of transportation that I most desire/admire is my own bicycle. It’s a sense of independence; as I have just moved out from my parents house. It is a possession that I own with my own money and what I do with it is my own responsibility. I can go where I like, as fast as it can go.

In a way to illustrate this I wanted my bike to look independent although I also see my bicycle as a form that I just take for granite and that I sometimes don’t respect. I was looking into a way to make it look useless, but in a way still looking like a respectable object.

Solution In a way to illustrate my bicycle I chose to highly detail it to emphasise my need for it and by connecting it to another bicycle I turned into a useless object. A bicycle that can’t move it just sits.

27

Fun With Micheal p1

28

Fun With Micheal p1

Resolving Solution For the first solution I went past the point and more or less create a resolution to the question. To resolve the resolved issue I illustrated my dream mode of transportation, a motorcycle. But not an ordinary motorcycle. I designed this bike to be ridden like a bicycle. Its light weight and low rpm. This allows just about anyone to pick up the bike.

I thought of this motorcycle as being a transition of our market. There are many university students that own bicycles. In the next few years these students will be graduating and giving up their bicycles. This bike would give the transition to new graduates. An easy and respectable way of moving around the city at low cost.

SIX P2 FUN WITH MICHEAL U

Choose a plastic house hold object and illustate it three different times representing three different meanings.

30

Fun With Micheal p2

Product / Process The product that I chose was the lawn chair. Its overly mass produced, it represents something cheap, but also long lasting. My process for this was to take away the bad meanings and replace it with something new; re-inventing the old.

Tacky I didn’t see it as actually making a wood chair that looked like an ordinary plastic chair, but a plastic chair that is covered with a wood pattern. We feel good because we think its wood, but actually its plastic, IKEA.

Religious, Glorious I saw it as a humours possibility that if you styled a chair as Jesus people would follow the chair like a religion.

Elegance Its the same chair that you use in the trailer park, but you can pay 1000 bucks a night to sit in the same chair and watch the same sunset.

Original Website

Who is the User?

The Original Site had many usability issues. There were too many links which could easily be grouped together. Parts which I found important were pushed off of the page like today’s news and week at a glance.

There was a setting on the website which allowed a persons to view the traffic of the website. After seeing that most people were only on the school website for 2 seconds or less it was understood that students were the number one users.

The schools colour was not used properly and the slight colour changes made it look very ugly.

Although they are using it the most, The only reason students are logging onto the webpage was to go somewhere else.

These were the main elements that I wanted to focus on.

Because of the quick use of the website I wanted things to be quick and easy to use.

ReGroove Usability

User

My main focus was the tool bar on the left side. I was able to match the links off of the original site into four groups: School, Student, Staff, and Parent. After doing this the page was freed up of its clutter.

Since the student is the number one user I made the main page the announcements. This allows the student to quickly view the days schedule. There is also the ability to change the date as desired to view upcoming events and announcements.

The tool bar will work by the mouse scrolling overtop of the category and information will scroll down pushing the other categories down as needed. Colour

The Picture bar at the top of the page scrolls through pictures of students. This will create conversation between the students extending the 2 second using time.`

I was able to play with the schools colour adding depth and change to the website.

Day

Process The word day meant many different things to me. It could have been the sun, light, planner, tomorrow, night. The idea that I was thinking about was night, but the idea of being tired in the day. The reason I stuck with being tired is because I have seen many doctors and still do not have an understanding of myself. Its always a hassle to track what it is you eat and do in a day, so as of now I don’t know whats wrong with me.

Layout I wanted to focus on this product being a way to not see a doctor. To give a person the trust of the product I designed the page to identify as a doctor. It looks professional and clean. The note on the left is meant to read as a doctors note. The companies at the bottom

.BCR.

Body Content Reader

BCR is a system that records your daily vital signs for you to understand your body to the fullest extent. The recording device is a small piece which will stick to the back of a person’s ear. The information recorded will be transmitted to an iphone where the information will be broken down for the user to understand. It has become a long time problem that visiting a doctor can sometimes leave a person with questions unanswered. Usually these visits are 5 minutes long but congest the medical system with small issues. With this device it could be possible that a person could care for themselves and not see a doctor, or go to a doctor with the recordings for a better analysis. This would cut out short doctor visits that fill the medical system giving more time for serious problems. The medical system can use the BCR to track patients outside of the hospital giving a stronger synopsis. This would cut down on medical time allowing a device to record information that a nurse or doctor would have to attend to in a hospital.
