She expresses her gratitude to David Fleay, the founder of the David Fleay Wildlife Park who mailed a lot of educational material to Paula and always replied to all her letters asking many questions on how to care for animals. He didn’t ignore the letters of a little girl but took her questions seriously. This childhood passion led her to become a trained nurse and later a wildlife warrior. I look up to see Brian, a male kangaroo on the porch munching on some grains. David and Paula had treated Brian for a very bad wound to his leg. Although recovered now and free to go back into the wild, he prefers to hang around the homestead. He is probably too old to be accepted into any kangaroo pods at this stage.
Brown Goshawk rescued after vehicle strike.
Safe Haven For Wildlife
Story submitted by Shoba Sadler
Another female and her joey, Tina and Tiny, are eating cobs of corn on the porch. They are also regular visitors although they were released two years ago into the forest bordering the homestead. Tina was only a tiny joey when she was brought to Paula’s after her mother was killed on the road. Tina was raised by Paula, and now feels safe coming back to their home with her own joey.
Setting foot onto Currum Gundu Dhar, the homestead of Paula and David Rowlands, is akin to being on the set of the movie Born Free. What you see, though, are not lions but redneck and swamp wallabies and eastern grey kangaroos. They graze on either side of the dirt driveway, unperturbed by my passing car. I reach the homestead, the headquarters of ANARRA (Australian Native Animals Rescue and Rehabilitation Association). A flock of purple swamp hens swoosh up into the air, clearing access to the gate, while ducks of various species swim happily in the dam, paying no attention to me. “Currum Gundu Dhar” means “Wild Home Land” in the Australian indigenous language. The name was given by Nai Nai Bird, an elder of the Butchulla tribe, a friend of the Rowlands. Paula has been caring for wildlife since she was 8-yearsold. “I had a very bad childhood and I found great solace in helping animals. Soon word got around that I was very good at treating animals and more and more people brought injured animals to me,” she said.
38
Caitlin feeding Wallaroo joey, Luna.
As she chats with me, Paula is feeding a bottle of milk to a Wallaroo joey called Luna. She was found in the suburbs of Gympie. As Wallaroos are not usually found in Gympie, it’s suspected that someone was keeping the small joey as a pet, as she was quite tame.
Another orphan joey, Joy, somersaults into a sling bag, hanging on a chair, in much the same way she would have done in her mother’s pouch. So many of these bags around the house, donated by volunteers, a reminder of babies left without their mothers’ love and guidance during the formative years of their little lives. “I think everyone in their lifetime should come to this place at least once to learn how to do so much with so little and to give back to the community. I am about to take on an office job and so I will leave soon, but I cannot imagine any office job being as fulfilling as working with Paula and David. Sure, it’s hard work but at the end of the day the satisfaction is so great,” said Particio Iglesias, 31, from Argentina. Patricio is a Woofer (Worker on organic friendly farm), working and living at the homestead. “My girlfriend Magdalena will stay on as she loves the experience and bonding with animals. She wants to learn as much as she can from Paula and David. Probably one day both of us will also be wildlife warriors wherever we may be in the world.” Magdalena, also a Woofer on the homestead, laments that not enough is being done to educate the youth on the importance of our forests and wildlife. She cuddles Joy, whose mother was unlawfully shot and killed by a member of the public.
Particio feeding a baby swamp wallaby.
“More and more forests are being destroyed to make way for development and in doing so no thought is being given to the welfare of wildlife. This should not be. This planet belongs to them too,” said Magdalena. The joey in Paula’s arms has finished its milk and Paula lowers it to the ground. She then brings out Anabelle, a baby koala rescued after her mother was killed in a road accident. Anabelle will be released when she is older and has gained muscle strength in the large pre-release enclosure. All around the homestead there are trees planted that provide food for koalas, possums and gliders.
Paula with rescued koala, Anabelle.
Paula and David have incredibly sophisticated enclosures and release pens on their homestead. They are specially built to house a range of wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, sugar gliders, possums, birds, koalas. The enclosures also have concrete plinths at the base so no predators like foxes or dingoes can get inside by digging underneath. ANARRA today has 125 members and amongst them a network of rescuers and carers. ANARRA members spend many hours every day caring for wildlife; collecting browse, preparing food and medicine, cleaning pens and bedding, and preparing their wildlife for release. The group has a range of equipment suitable for rescuing most wildlife. The group’s greatest need is for specialised milks and food for joeys. As an example, 1 kg of milk will last a small joey 3 days, and the cost of 1kg is around $20. ANARRA currently has in excess of 42 joeys on milk so you can see how quickly the costs mount. If you see a sick, injured or orphaned wildlife, please call the ANARRA hotline on 5484 9111. ANARRA welcomes more people to sign up as members to benefit from the many workshops they hold so everyone can learn how to act responsibly towards nature and wildlife. If they would like to venture further to become carers and rescuers they may continue with training under supervision of the more experienced carers. ANARRA recently established a Public Fund for tax deductible donations. For more information visit the ANARRA website www.anarra.org.
