Historic Tesla Science Center Fire
“Everyone associated with Tesla Science Center owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the many, heroic first responders for their extraordinary courage and determination,” said Tesla Science Center Executive Director Marc Alessi. “We are immensely grateful for the commitment and bravery of our local firefighters.” More than 100 firefighters, from the Rocky Point Fire Department and 16 other local fire departments and ambulance companies, responded to the November 21, 2023, blaze, which was fully extinguished by the next morning. The building, which was under renovation, suffered a partial collapse the night of the fire Mr. Alessi expressed relief that the overall structural integrity of the building, dating back to 1901, seemed to have largely withstood the fire’s effects thanks to the fearless members of the fire service. The extent of the damage is being assessed by (TSCW’s) site engineer, the laboratory’s historical architect, a structural engineering firm, and multiple local agencies. Their analysis will help determine the fire’s specific impact on restoration plans. Alessi went on to say, “On behalf of everyone we thank you for your quick response and bravery under difficult conditions.” - Fire News photos by Terry McCarrick, Tom Lambui, and the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe Laboratory

Wounded Marines Present to Nassau Firefighters
Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior was presented with a painting named “Marine Dad,” which was painted by three wounded US Marines who had lost their hands in combat. It was painted while the Marines were in rehab at Camp Lejeune. It depicts father and son firefighters. Nassau firefighters were presented the painting during their annual visit to Camp Lejeune to bring Christmas to the wounded in hospitals and rehabilitation units up and down the East Coast. This year the NCFF-OWW is celebrating its 20th Anniversary of helping the wounded.
In the photo, NCFFOWW presents the painting to the Nassau County Firefighters Museum to hang in the museum. Making the presentation is incoming Chairman Terrence Powderly, second from left, of the Bellerose Fire Department, along with Chairman Emeritus Joe O’Grady, left, of the Floral Park Fire Department who has chaired the organization for 20 years of its existence. Accepting on behalf of the museum is ExChief Michael Capoziello of the Elmont Fire
Department. The inscription on the painting says, “Presented to Nassau County Fire Departments for your continued exceptional support to our Nation’s most valuable asset-wounded, ill, and injured Marines and their families.” - Fire News photos by Steve Grogan

First Joint Junior Extrication Drill
On November 12, 2023, the Lindenhurst Fire Department hosted the first ever Town of Babylon Joint Junior Fire Department Extrication Drill at Fireman’s Park. The event was coordinated by North Lindenhurst ex-Captain Cirino Sesto. Juniors from Amityville, Copiague, Deer Park, East Farmingdale, North Babylon, West Babylon and North Lindenhurst participated in the drill. The instructors for the drill were Lindenhurst Third Assistant Chief Brink (NYPD Emergency Service Truck 3; ret.), North Lindenhurst ex-Chief Pete Maslinski (FDNY Squad 270; ret.) and Andrew Dinkel (FDNY Rescue 1; ret.). The juniors worked together and learned how to use various extrication tools and had three vehicles to use them on. The event was a success and had over 60 juniors participated. More joint drills are being planned for the future. - Fire News photos by Paul Mazza

He was a charter member
of FDNY Squad 288. Pete was also a Lieutenant in Hauppauge Fire Department Engine 1 where he was also promoted to honorary Chief after 9/11. The bench will be put in Lakeland Garden of Hero’s next to LFD HQ on Johnson Avenue. On October 4, 2023, the Nesconset and Lakeland fire departments held a Class-A residential combined drill at Suffolk County Fire Academy. Lakeland brought one ladder truck to the academy and Nesconset brought in two engines. Crews from both fire departments trained in attached garage fires first, and next a basement fire with extension to the second floor. There was a dummy used as a victim in the basement fire simulation. For both drills the departments had a quick knockdown on the fire. Crews drilled for around 90 minutes and then returned to Nesconset Fire Department for dinner. - Fire News photos by Chase Millwater

New Hyde Park Juniors Train The New Hyde Park Junior firefighters recently conducted an exciting drill in collaboration with Estates Engine 3. The purpose of the drill was to give the Juniors an opportunity to practice different skills they will need when they become Class A members of the department. During the drill, Juniors were separated into groups to promote teamwork. The teams rotated around four stations that taught different skills. The first station dealt with hose procedures, next there was a search and rescue station in which the Juniors put on their SCBAs and conducted a search around the interior of the building. At the third station, they learned about ladder operations. Finally, Juniors learned how to use different types of fire extinguishers. The New Hyde Park Juniors program has certainly come a long way since it was established in 2022, encouraging teenagers to become volunteer firefighters while gaining life skills and volunteering experience. The program now has almost 80 members and more waiting. This drill is one of many the department has done in order to train their eager Juniors on firefighting techniques and on how to collaborate as a team — a life skill that stretches far beyond firefighting. - Fire News story and photos submitted by Emma Matthew

Mineola Wetdown On October 28, 2023, Mineola Fire Department Engine Company 3 held a wetdown for the new-to-them Engine 166, a 2007 Pierce Dash 1750/500. Acquired from the Syosset Fire District (former 585) in the fall of 2022, the new 166 replaces a 1993 E-One Pumper which served the company for nearly 30 years. The afternoon began with brief remarks from Mineola Mayor Pereira, Chief of Department Magalhaes, and Engine 3 Captain Attard. Following the remarks, Mineola Tower Ladder 166 and Hempstead Truck 1 were supplied by Syosset Engine 585 and performed the wetdown of the new Engine 166. Obituary
Hauppauge’s John Gallagher Ex-Captain John ‘Jack’ Gallagher of the Hauppauge Fire Department passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023, at the age of 88. Jack, also lovingly known as ‘Big Daddy,’ was a dedicated member of the Hauppauge Fire Department who proudly helped his community for 52 years. He served as Captain of Engine Company 4. He was a certified EMT, President of the Hauppauge Fire Department Benevolent Association from 2017 until 2020, and he was a member of the Suffolk County Firefighters Emerald Society. He was named Hauppauge Firefighter of the Year in 1978, 1987 and 1991 Jack will be remembered for the many good things he did in life. He was a friend and a mentor to many. He had the best sense of humor and he always had a big smile on his face. He was 37 when he volunteered to become a firefighter with the Hauppauge Fire Department and he excelled at firefighting. He was a quick learner and was never hesitant to pass his knowledge on to younger members. Jack’s passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of those who called him friend. There is no doubt that he has joined God’s volunteers and he is probably challenging the angels to keep up with his pull ups. May he forever rest in peace. - Fire News photo submitted by Ex-Captain Louis Marcus, Corresponding Secretary, Hauppauge FD
