Wantagh, Bethpage Train
On November 12, 2023, Engines 2, 4 and 7 and Ladder 2 went to the Bethpage Fire Department’s training facility to participate in a training alongside Bethpage Ladder 3 and Bethpage Engine 5 for some inter-agency training. Members from both departments joined, listened and observed as the captains from Wantagh Engine 2 and Bethpage Engine 5 talked about the hose bed layouts of their respective engines as well as the water supply operating procedures utilized by each department. Members learned about the different apparatus layouts and recommended operating procedures, down to the different hose coupling threads utilized across the neighboring districts. After the discussion, firefighters proceeded to conduct two evolutions simulating fires in a two-story private dwelling with fire on the first floor extending to the second. As always, crews
worked very well together and enjoyed the opportunity to train and learn beside one another. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Bethpage Fire Department for their invitation to join with them, including, especially Captain Ganshaw and Lieutenant Costa of Bethpage Ladder 3 and ex-Captain Ron Martin of Bethpage Engine 5 for coordinating with Captain Fratello of Wantagh Engine 2 to make this training opportunity possible. All participants agreed that the opportunity to work with neighboring departments is vitally important. Learning about and from each other makes us all better prepared to work together when necessary. We hope to work together again in the near future. - Submitted by Kevin Regan, WFD PIO; photos by Captain Fratello WFD

Joseph DiBernardo Seminar
January 23, 2005 was “Black Sunday” in New York when FDNY Lieutenant Curtis W. Meyran (covering Ladder 27 that day) and Firefighter John G. Bellew (Ladder 27) died in the line of duty at an apartment fire in the Bronx. Four other firefighters were injured: Jeffrey Cool (Rescue 3) the late Lieutenant Joseph DiBernardo -Rescue 3, Brendan Cawley (Ladder 27) and Eugene Stolowski (Ladder 27). All six were forced to jump from the fourth floor of the apartment building as they were trapped by the fire. Two firefighters died on impact. Lt. DiBernardo committed life-saving actions as he helped to lower another member safely to the ground. Once the other member was safely on the ground, Joseph tied himself to an unstable surface where he then jumped and suffered severe injuries. While on his prolonged hospital stay, DiBernardo was promoted to Lieutenant. Unfortunately, on November 22, 2011, FDNY Lieutenant Joseph P. DiBernardo passed away. His life saving actions made an impact on all and, as a result of his actions that day, the “Lieutenant Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation” was created to provide departments all over the world with life-saving trainings and equipment. This year, the annual “Joey D. Training” was held at the Suffolk County Fire Academy to help firefighters from all over experience hands-on training to simulate a real-life situation and how to handle it. - Fire News photos by FirstDueFireMedia; Spencer Austin; Chase Millwater; and Jeremy Walters, Joey D Foundation

FASNY BRINGS TOP SPEAKERS TO SELDEN FOR ANNUAL EMS CONFERENCE
Retired New Orleans EMS Chief Ken Bouvier to Headline Annual Program on Long Island The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is bringing its annual EMS Conference to Selden on Saturday, January 24, 2024. The one-day event, which has been on Long Island for two decades, is packed with presentations addressing the most contemporary and critical topics in the EMS. These invaluable sessions are complemented by a Pre-Conference Workshop eligible for Core CME credit hours in toxicology, cardiology, respiratory, psychiatric and EMS operations, among others. The seminar will also include a “State of the State of EMS” presentation by the State Department of Health. This year’s FASNY EMS Conference features Chief Ken Bouvier, who is beginning his 49th year as an EMS provider. Chief Bouvier has worked as a career and volunteer paramedic, fire fighter and Chief officer. Following a career in fire and life safety at Monsanto, Ken was appointed Deputy Chief of Operations for New Orleans EMS in 2012, serving as EMS Commander of multiple large and complex incidents. Just prior to his retirement in 2019, he was prominently featured in the A&E real-life action series “Nightwatch.” chronicling the work of New Orleans EMS. Ken will be presenting “Managing School Bus Accidents” and “Understanding Firefighter Injuries” - two important topics for EMS providers on Long Island.
With an average of 480,000 yellow school buses transporting 25 million students to and from schools across the United States, school bus accidents happen far more frequently than we realize. These incidents require an understanding of school bus design and safety features. They produce a range of traumatic injuries and come with the additional challenges of managing young patients, patient tracking and dealing with school officials and parents. Chief Bouvier’s session will prepare you for school bus accidents in your community. With about 16,000 volunteer firefighters serving in fire departments across Long Island, local EMS providers are often called to fire and other emergency scenes to not only treat civilian victims, but also to standby to provide pre-hospital care and transportation for firefighters injured at the scene. Chief Bouvier will review the most common types of firefighter injuries, including how and why they occur. He will also review the role of EMS crews in anticipating and when possible, preventing firefighter injuries or medical emergencies on the fireground. For more on the FASNY EMS Seminar in Selden, please visit fasny.com.

Obituary
Southampton’s Rodney B. Pierson
Southampton Fire Department ex-Chief Rodney B Pierson answered his last alarm on October 1, 2023. Rodney was 86 years old. During his 50 years of service as a volunteer fireman, he responded to countless calls and worked his way through the ranks of the department. He served as the Engine Company's 2nd Lieutenant from 1972-1974, 1st Lieutenant from 1974-1976, and Captain from 1976-1978. He was elected to serve as the Department’s 2nd Assistant Chief from 1980-
1982, 1st Assistant Chief from 1982-1985, and Chief from 1985 to 1987. One of the proudest moments of his life was receiving his 50 Years of Service Award from the department, not only because it marked a milestone in a firefighter’s volunteer career, but because it was presented to him by the then Chief of the Department, his only son Rodney ‘Chip’ Pierson. Members of the department knew Rodney as ‘Big Rod.’ His deep voice resonated through
the room and when he spoke, people sure did listen. He will be missed by his family and his second family, the Southampton Fire Department. - Submitted by Chris Brenner Southampton FD ex-chief/PIO; photo courtesy of the Pierson family.
