Schenectady firefighters received multiple calls fora garage fire on Oxford Place spreading to neighboring garages on the B and D sides on November9, 2024. Two alarms were sounded. The cause of the fire was underinvestigation.

Around 0745 on November9, 2024, Batavia firefighters were dispatched to Howard Street forthe report of a fire.. On arrival, companies found heavy smoke and fire pushing from the front door vents on the roof of the building. Second and third alarms were quickly struck bringing in additional city and mutual aid units. Firefighters set up defensive operations with numerous aerial and masterstreams working to knock down the well-advanced heavy fire load. Manhattan 6-Alarmerand a Mayday

Engine Company 80 transmitted a 10-75 forfire blowing out the second-floorwindow of a six-story occupied multiple dwelling on West 145th Street in Manhattan. Units used numerous hoselines to get to a fire on the third through fifth floors. Laterin the fire, a

Mayday was transmitted aftera firefighterfell into a shaft. Rescue Company 1 and 3 operated along with the Rescue Medics to remove the firefighter. The fire ultimately went to six alarms.

3-Alarmerat Queens 7-Story

FDNYunits in the Lindenwood section of Queens battled a threealarm blaze at the Greenwood Arms apartment complex on 151st Street on November15, 2024. Heavy smoke could be seen from a distance as companies responded. Firefighters were met by heavy fire and smoke conditions on the top two floors of the seven-story occupied multiple dwelling. Residents were evacuating to the street and companies commenced fire operations. The incident took almost two hours to bring undercontrol as numerous apartments in the large complex needed to be searched. There were no serious injuries reported.

The 46 Battalion transmitted a 10-75 while en route to Woodhaven Boulevard on November30, 2024. Units arrived to heavy fire in the rearof attached commercial buildings. Heavy fire was showing from the top floorof the three-story dwelling on arrival. Engine companies needed to make long stretches to supply waterbut quickly got handlines into operations. Crews stretched lines and hit the fire from the exteriordue to the heavy fire load before transitioning to an interiorattack. Engine compa-

A62-year-old man was killed in Queens Village in a private dwelling fire on the afternoon of November17, 2024. FDNYunits arrived quickly at the 110th Avenue address and found a heavy smoke and fire condition in a rearsecond-floorbedroom. Around 1915 on November18, 2024, Rochesterfirefighters were dispatched to multiple calls reporting a building on fire on Canal Street. Companies pulled up to heavy fire showing from numerous windows on the first floorand out the front doorof a four-story vacant structure. Asecond alarm was quickly struck as crews worked to set up defensive operations on the well-involved building. Firefighters entered the exposure and worked to evacuate residents and set up lines in the building to protect it from the extending flames. Command struck third and fourth alarms bringing in extra resources. Crews continued to operate throughout the night.

Teddy Bears forChildrens’ Wards in Buffalo Area

This holiday season Cheektowaga’s Doyle Hose Number1 joined with the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Local 282 and the KIA Memorial Supporters during theiryearly BearDrive. Approximately 500 Teddy bears were collected to be given to sick children in local hospitals in the Buffalo area.

World’s Largest (Toy) Collection Event

Saratoga Sheriff’s Department held its 11th annual Toys forTots Convoy on November17, 2024. The Marine Corps event has now been classified as the World’s Largest Collection Event. Hundreds of fire departments, police departments, military, commercial and personal vehicles participated in the convoy that travels to Saratoga Performing Arts Center(SPAC) forloading toys into multiple trailers fordistribution. Winona Lake Tricky Tray

The Winona Lake Ladies Auxiliary held theirfirst Tricky Tray, with over100 baskets made by the ladies. There was a beautiful turn out, food was sold and there was also a 50/50. ATricky Tray combines aspects of fundraising raffles and silent auctions.

Supporters buy tickets to participate in the charitable event, and each ticket is equivalent to one bid.

In the afternoon on October1, 2024, East Rochesterfirefighters were dispatched to West Chestnut Street forthe report of a house fire. First arriving companies arrived to find light smoke showing from the first floorand declared a working fire. Lines were

stretched as additional companies began to arrive on scene. Crews were able to make a quick knockdown on the fire saving the home from serious damage.

Vischers Ferry Fire Department welcomed theirnewest piece of fire apparatus, the E-631 Heavy Rescue/Tankerwhich is on a Toyne Gladiatorchassis, and has a UPF1000-gallon tank, with Amdor roll-up doors and rearthrough-body/tank ladderand pike pole storage. The upperbody coffin compartments have storage for15

Midway Fire Prevention Week

The Midway Fire Department invited members of theircommunity to visit theirstation forfire prevention week. The day included a bounce house, raffles, a visit from the Firebirds mascot Spike, CPR instruction by Colonie EMS, child fingerprinting by the Albany Sheriff’s Department and Colonie Police. They also had a bailout demonstration and a wall breach demonstration to show the public possible scenarios of firefighterself-rescue.

Wall Collapse in Brockport

On November22, 2024, Brockport firefighters responded forthe reported foundation wall collapse with flooding in the basement. First responders observed a sizable portion of the west basement wall of Apartment 6 was missing, with a large hole outside the structure. Firefighters ensured the residents were evacuated and no life-safety issues were identified. The 911 callerstated there had been excavation nearby the day before due to a watermain break, though no determination has been made as to whetherthe incidents are related. Also on scene were the Monroe County Fire Bureau's Special Operations Team, and the Brockport Police Department. Brockport Ambulance Corps stood by.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Newest Board Member

John Butler has been appointed to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as their newest board Member.

John Butler is the Fire Chief for Fairfax County Government, Virginia. He is a paramedic and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Baltimore, a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University and certificates from Harvard University, the National Fire Academy (NFA) Executive Fire Officer Program (EFO), and the Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI). Chief Butler served as the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) President in 2023-2024, holds the Chief Fire Officer, Chief EMS Officer, Chief Training Officer, and Fire Marshal designations from the Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC). He is chairman of the NFA Board of Visitors; and is a board member of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association. Chief Butler is a retired U.S. Marine with 20 years of active and reserve United States Marine Corps service, including two combat tours.

Rochester2-Alarmer

Just before midnight on October12, 2024, Rochesterfirefighters were dispatched forthe report of smoke in the area. While en route to the call, a second call came in reporting a house fire on Crouch Street. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from a two-story dwelling. Command was established and quickly declared a second alarm as heavy fire was threatening exposures on both sides of the home. Lines were stretched and crews worked to knock down the fire but were forced to go defensive afterheavy fire compromised the structural integrity of the home. Aladderpipe and large lines were used to knock the main body of the fire down as crews established a collapse zone around the original fire building.
