A Recipe For Retirement Dr. Steve & Jill Morgan p. 2

A Recipe For Retirement Retired Ophthalmologist and Junior High School Teacher… NOW Jazz Pianist, Fly-Fisherman, Golfer and Painter, Needlepoint Artist, Gourmet Cook… Steve Morgan knew he was in trouble when, with great exhilaration, he bought his FireRock lot in 1999. The road had not yet reached where his lot was staked; but, hiking in with his real estate agent, Steve knew this was it. Contract days created a bidding situation to win your lot of choice. Steve’s lot was uncontested, with the one exception of Jill Morgan, his lovely wife, who refused to share his enthusiasm and desire to build a new home “one more time.” In our lives, we recall memorable defining moments. Steve used his powers of persuasion, lots of sweet-nothings and the promise of a separate painting studio and pizza oven. The deal was sealed. Two years later, working with architect Bill Schroeder, their beautiful home came to life. Inspired by the new FireRock Clubhouse entry, you’ll see a rough-rock wall, accented by a waterfall, which graces the entry to the Morgan’s home. It is the fourth home built in FireRock and the timeless design helped set the stage for what has followed. In the summer of 2011, Steve and Jill celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their two wonderful children and four grandchildren, in a home they rented, overlooking Lake Michigan. David and Shelley Knerr Dave and Shelley are from the Tri-Cities area in Eastern Washington. Dave has a commercial construction company that their youngest son manages during the winter months while they are here. Shelley is a retired State Farm Agent. With the help of their youngest daughter, they also have a commercial and residential property management company. Thanks to the Internet they are able to stay in Eagle Mountain about 7 months of the year. The Knerr’s have 4 children and 9 grandchildren...all of which are 10 or younger. Dave is an avid golfer, loves Harley bikes and cooking for their guests. Shelley rides motorcycles (tandem), enjoys walking and, of course, shopping. They both enjoy traveling...anywhere. They chose Fountain Hills for its incredible beauty and its friendliness to newcomers like them.

Chris Morrison, Head Golf Professional Senior Club Championship We are enjoying another great golf season at FireRock. In February, Jack McDiarmid won the Senior Club Championship title with a fine two day gross score of 148. Flight winners gross included Mike Brull, Rusty Lawrence and Bob Maynard. Net winners were Tim Gibbons, Chris Garrett and Bruce Moss. Couples Club Championship The 2012 Couples Club Championship resulted in a two-way playoff between Mike & Lena Brull and Bob & Beth Maynard. Both couples shot an impressive gross score of 74 to tie in regulation. One playoff hole wasn’t enough for these two couples, as it took a second trip down hole #18 to decide the winners. Bob and Beth Maynard came out on top by a close margin! Also taking home some pro shop credit was Greg & Sherri Christiansen, who shot a net 60 to claim the 1st place Net Division!! Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who played. Ladies Member/Member Under cold and windy conditions, the Ladies Member/Member was played Jan 24th. First place winners are Louise Moss/Melissa Nalli 60 , tied for 2nd was Lena Brull/Winnie Bezemer, Shelly Norris/ Sarka Hulpach 63, 4th place was Beth Maynard/ Laura Cannon 64. Well done ladies! Rally for the Cure The Rally for the Cure was played on Feb 14th under cold and, of course, windy conditions. The team of Vicki Berner, Sandra Nogue, Lisa Malecha, and Nevine Niazi won with a great score of 66. Second place was Debra Rogers, Beth Maynard, Melissa Nalli and Lena Brull with a score of 70, which was won on a tie-breaker with Mary Brownlee, Jodi Kammerer, Wendy Kuna and Ann Nelle. We had 81 players and raised $2800 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who supported the Rally this year!! 2012 Ladies Invitational Our 2012 Ladies Invitational brought together fortyeight women for a couple days of golf, fun, betting games, and great weather. Louise Moss and her guest, Harriet Goldstein, claimed first place honors with a double-playoff win over our second place team of Karen Peyman and Christy Cornelius. Also coming down the stretch with some very impressive golf of their own was Lena Brull and her sister, Anita Nigro, who took third place. Our Secondary Shootout was also won in dramatic fashion, as Janie Nolen/Suzy Muzzarelli beat Sharyn Weiss/Barb Davis in a chip-off on the 18th hole. Full results are posted on ForeTees. We want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s event. We hope you had a great time and look forward to doing it again in 2013! Men’s Invitational – April 11th – 14th As we move into April, the featured event is the Men’s Invitational taking place on April 11th-14th. Mark your calendar. As we get close to the end of this playing season, I want to thank all the members who participated and made our FireRock events a great success. We look forward to another great season next year and hope everyone has a wonderful summer. For you summer golfers, our Summer Reciprocal Program will be coming again in May. Watch for more details. Steve and Jill met in college at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. They quickly discovered their “Hatfield/McCoy” situation, as they were from fiercely rival high schools, actually the #1 Oldest High School Football Rivalry in the country, Webster Groves and Kirkwood High School in the St. Louis suburbs. Classmates from their schools still get together at FireRock as the match continues on the golf course. Steve, of course, charmed his way into Jill’s heart and their story unfolds. After graduating DePauw, Steve attended St. Louis University Medical School, interned at Vanderbilt and completed his ophthalmology training in Rochester, MN, at the Mayo Clinic. He served two years in the Navy as an ophthalmologist at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, while Jill taught Junior High School. Moving back to St. Louis, Steve had a successful career as a private practice ophthalmologist; and the Morgans raised their family. Avid skiers, Steve and Jill owned a second home in Snowmass, CO where the family enjoyed shushing down the slopes for over 17 years. In 1997, it was time for a change and the Arizona sunshine was calling. Steve’s brother is a Paradise Valley resident; and many trips to the Valley of the Sun left an impression. Lured by the serenity and beauty of Fountain Hills, Eagle Mountain became a new second home; and the casual Arizona lifestyle agreed with them. Of course, the proximity to FireRock, as the golf course was under construction, led to “the rest of the story”. Retired for the past seven years, Steve and Jill live an enviable life here at FireRock. Jill enjoys her studio and is a prolific oil painter. Her women’s painting group that meets every week to paint together is affectionately called “Three Broad Strokes”! A certified needlepoint artist, who had a shop in St. Louis for nine years, Jill says; “I will continue to needlepoint the rest of my life.” She is always designing and creating art, in needlepoint, as she interprets her grandkids paintings and their baby pictures into beautiful pillows and art. Steve also adds, “She is a remarkable cook. This is a ‘Julie & Julia’ story. I gave her the Vincent Price cookbook, A Treasury of Great Recipes, while we lived in Virginia. She prepared almost every recipe in the book; and, as a result, is a wonderful gourmet cook.” Still burning up the course at FireRock, Steve plays with a number of the men’s groups and in the Club tournaments. He also plans annual trips to Montana to fly fish with his friends. But, his real passion, these days, is learning to play jazz piano. The Morgans hosted an In-Home Jazz Concert featuring the pianist, Armand Boatman, a well known jazz pianist, who Jill discovered just happens to give lessons. An accomplished piano player already; for the past two years, Steve has Article Continues on Page 7

Jason Snyder, Course Superintendent We are pleased to announce our new Golf Course Superintendent, Mr. Jason Snyder! Jason comes to us from Estancia Golf Club, in Scottsdale, where he was First Assistant. Prior to Estancia, he was the Superintendent at Baltimore Country Club, in Maryland, and an Assistant Superintendent, at Winged Foot Golf Club, in New York. He started his new position with us, Monday, March 12th. Let’s all extend our FireRock welcome to Jason. Agronomy Update Our Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, Ryan Voyles, stepped up to manage the day-to-day maintenance. Working at Fire Rock the past four years, Ryan easily kept pace with the necessary programs and golf course grooming. As our busy tournament season is well underway, we have taken measures to refine the playability of the course. The height on the fairways, tees and complex were lowered. We are using groomers on our green’s mowers, which helps the grass stand upright for a better cut creating a firmer, faster playing surface. As a result of thatch, standing water is an on-going challenge on the golf course. We have started aerifying the fairways with our new Wiedenmann Aerifier to improve the situation. Aerification is essential in the relief of soil compaction, and also provides a method to accelerate water drainage and displacement of salt from our effluent water source. This summer all areas will be verti-cut to further remedy and manage better water absorption. In an effort to enhance our bunkers, heavy maintenance is in full-swing to make sure all corrections are made. We want to thank our members for using the green and white stakes that define the point of entry into the fairway. This is so helpful in avoiding the extra turf wear.

been learning from Armand, how to play from a “Fake Book”, for you musicians. Jill comments, “He practices an hour-and-a-half every day and I’m actually starting to recognize the songs!” Steve adds, “Next to my decision to marry Jill, I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had.” Not to be left out, you almost never see the Morgans without Mesa, their rescue dog who came to stay a couple of years ago. After deciding to take the lost dog, Steve watched in horror as Mesa bolted off a high retaining wall at the back of their patio in the first 20 minutes at his new home. Chasing the dog through the desert, across the golf course and down the road, they finally gave up. Later that day, a soft scratching at the back door let them know Mesa, as he came to be called, was ready to move-in and he has been a welcome addition ever since. The Morgan’s are FireRock lovers and we are fortunate to have original members who continue to share the beauty of our community with their friends and family.

Club Dining Nights this season are filled with enthusiastic Members enjoying their friends and Chef’s variety of offerings. More Members are making reservations with Cheryl, which is such a great assist to us in ordering properly and scheduling staff to provide our best service and selection. Thank you for your consideration. This year we tried something new; and it caught on quickly! Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, a Satellite Snack Bar is conveniently stationed at the number ten tee-box. Chef plans to add new items that are quick to serve and provide a change from the customary snack bar choices. We’ve had very positive comments and will continue to offer the Satellite Snack Bar throughout the cooler months. The Season’s Ending Celebration is set for Saturday, April 27th. This is a good time to say farewell to Members who leave for the summer months. This year’s theme is the memorable 1960s. Put on your retro clothing and join us for a fun night of great food, classic music, and dancing. We’d also, like everyone who owns a classic car, or motorcycle, to park them in the west parking lot for our “Classic Car Showcase”. There will be prizes awarded in several categories including the “Grand Best of Show Award”. I welcome your questions, comments and suggestions. We are eager to introduce new ideas and create the best Club experience, in all areas, for our FireRock Members. Mark Lorenzen and Lisa Hines
Gary and Lea McClung Gary and Lea McClung recently relocated to Scottsdale from Kansas City, Missouri. After 42 years, Gary is consulting with his company, which allowed them to relocate to Arizona. Both Gary and Lea are avid golfers and love the Arizona sunshine. FireRock offers a beautiful backdrop with plenty of golf course challenge. Another love is their four grown children and seven grandchildren who they frequently travel to see. The McClungs look forward to meeting and teeing-it-up with the FireRock Members.

Our Club “food and wine” events are festive member gatherings hosted monthly at various members’ homes throughout FireRock. Make plans to join us soon. They are a great way to meet fellow members and make new friends. A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. May for hosting the “Blind Wine” event, at their beautiful home. The rack of lamb, short ribs, delicious risotto and pasta salad, not to mention the fruit tarts and chocolate bites were a great accompaniment to fourteen reds that were tasted and scored. The grand winner this year, brought by Bill and Nancy Schwartz, was a $12 Italian red, Mantellassi Morellino di Scansano, which compares to a Pinot Noir for parings; but, goes with almost anything. Bill and Nancy took home $120 shopping cash. Everyone truly had a wonderful time. There is still room for our upcoming cooking class April 21st, where the theme is “Mexican Fiesta”. Impress your friends by learning to prepare traditional Southwest cuisine. Give Cheryl a call to make a reservation as they fill up fast. Just a reminder that FireRock is here for all your catering needs and no event is too large or too small. Our attention to detail provides you and your guests with a special experience; and you can relax and enjoy the evening. We also prepare hors d’oeuvres and dinner for any occasion. Call Krista Hummel at 480.836.3452, in catering and events, for details. Truly a winner year ‘round, I want to share our Carrot Cake recipe with you. Early Screening May Save You Later It is estimated that 145,000 people in this country will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year alone, and about 57,000 people will die from the disease. Of these cases approximately 93 percent of those diagnosed were men and women ages 50 and over. When detected early, this kind of cancer can be fully cured more than 90 percent of the time. Here is some helpful information about the testing and procedures for colorectal screening along with some helpful tools to better inform you on the logistics. Screening tests can find colorectal cancer in its earliest stages when it can be treated more successfully. Screening also can identify pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is one type of CRC screening test. FOBT can be conducted in the doctor’s office or at home. In the home test, the person collects several stool samples and places the samples on special cards, and then sends the cards back to the physician or a lab to be tested. During the in-office FOBT, the physician collects a single sample from a patient during a digital rectal exam. The home test is recommended for CRC screening. The in-office FOBT is not recommended for CRC screening. Background Between 1999 and 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborated with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to conduct a national survey of primary care physicians to examine how colorectal cancer screening and follow-up are conducted in community practice. The responses were compared with responses from the public in the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. The results indicate that physicians may not be following recommended national guidelines for performing the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) when they screen patients for colorectal cancer. Study Results More than 90 percent of physicians said they ordered or performed FOBT. Although screening guidelines recommend that patients use home tests for FOBT, 33 percent of physicians said that they use only the in-office test, which is not recommended for CRC screening. Studies suggest that home FOBT saves lives; to date, no studies have looked at the effectiveness of in-office tests. However, one recent study clearly showed that in-office tests miss many polyps and cancers that home tests can detect. Further, national guidelines recommend home FOBT tests instead of in-office tests. National guidelines recommend that patients with positive FOBT results have an examination of the entire colon and rectum, yet about 30 percent of physicians recommend that patients first repeat the FOBT. Rather than recommending that their patients with positive FOBT results have total colon exam, almost one-third of physicians recommended they have sigmoidoscopy, a procedure that examines only part of the colon and therefore can miss polyps and cancers. Conclusion Because FOBT is often not performed or followed-up as recommended, fewer lives may be saved than is potentially possible. Patients who choose FOBT for CRC screening should use the home test. If they have positive results, they should have a total colon exam in follow-up. Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign educates men and women who are 50 years or older about colorectal cancer and the importance of having regular cancer screening tests. The campaign also encourages people to speak with their physicians about the appropriate screening tests. For more information about Screen for Life visit http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/screenforlife.
