Ana Silvera, Hannah Masters-Waag and Absinthe - an accidental review Alas, before I realise, there comes a seminal moment when I realise I’ve had a little too much to drink... Absinthe...and I begin to drift. I peer into the darkness, waiting for Ana Silvera... waiting, I foolishly believe, to be underwhelmed... HUSH...she’s so little...a sparrow, dressed all in sparkle black, beautiful as string picking fingers, check her tuning all in a flurry of magical trance... by Richmond Harding

Bestseller are so yesterday - how to write a phenomenon Ever read one of those “How To Write A Bestseller” books? No? Me neither. Nor do I intend to. I’m after bigger game, you see. I want to write a phenomenon. A freak. A bestseller that pulls down the shorts of other bestsellers and gives their chubby paper bottoms a palm-stinging spank.

CONTENTS Dan Eastmond Managing Director
"Ch ch ch ch changes!"... "CHANGE, ba durda durda do, you can change"... "I'm a Changelin', see me change"... Psychologists may tell you we're all terrified of change, but David, Curt, Jim and all of us here are actually big fans. No laborious routines and same old same olds for us, no no, two years in and we're as fresh today as we were on September 1st 2008! "Where do changez?" you say contemporarily. Well, there's our staff changes for starters. Those of you who visit us regularly will already know that Nuala is at the helm of all things Front of House, "sprinkling fairy dust and magic on everything she touches" (A Customer). Graham Bendel joined us back in May, from The Barbican, Raindance Film Festival and Fortune Teller Press. We're extremely lucky to have him and this very programme is the first result of his vision and expertise. Dave Howard is our newest arrival, taking up the reigns in Education & Participation. His track record and sense of what arts and culture is all about is exhilarating and great things are sure to follow. "Nuff change or still shiftez?" you say, slightly over egging your part. Well, there's also our upgraded HD cinema, new full length dance mirrors in the Basement Studio, the refurbished bar, Pure Dance Union, a new improved website, better cinema times, Beat Magazine's first printed issue, and even this programme has been tweaked and enhanced. Any road, before the bottom of the page once again silences me, I should tell you that just a turn of the page will reveal Ivor Novello nominated music from Tunng & The Leisure Society at Theatre Royal, award winning dance from Udify Dance, cutting edge theatre with The Inconsiderate Aberrations of Billy The Kid, a world premier from Scanner, lazy fun at The Big Picnic, beautiful family theatre with The Magic Lamp, cult British film Bronco Bullfrog, awesome comedy from Punt & Dennis, brand new dance classes from Pure Dance Union, Graffiti Workshops & Bugsy Malone! Have fun, don't be a stranger & don't go changing, Dan

OCTOBER
Thu 02 8pm South of the Border 2009 15 Oliver Stone is out to show us what the US media won’t admit, that in Latin America there is a revolution in the making. Crossing five countries, Stone explores the political and social movements of the continent. Sun 05 7.30pm Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call 2010 18 A remake of the Abel Ferrara’s acclaimed film about a morally bankrupt police officer. World-class director Werner Herzog has changed the setting to New Orleans and made, perhaps, an even better film than the original. Stars Nicholas Cage in his best performance.
Sun 03 8pm Life During Wartime 2010 15 A brilliant companion piece to Todd Solondz’s notorious Happiness and described as “a dark comedy of sexual obsession”. Uncomfortable laughs, riffs on alienation and all the curious tenderness that one has come to expect from Solondz. Sun 10 7.30pm Dogtooth 2009 18 A middle-class father shields his family from the corrupt forces of the modern world – so they become too scared to ever leave home. Reminiscent of early Ian McEwan and director Michael Haneke, Dogtooth is an unforgettable piece of absurdist drama. Subtitled (Greek) Sun 17 7.30pm Boogie Woogie 2009 15 Starring Joanna Lumley and Christopher Lee, Boogie Woogie is the long-awaited film adaptation of Danny Moynihan’s literary smash hit. A comedy of manners set against the backdrop of London’s international art scene.
Bad Lieutenant
Sun 12 7.30pm The Killer Inside Me 2010 18 Director Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) successfully brings to screen Jim ‘The Getaway’ Thompson’s infamous crime novel. Casey Affleck is perfectly cast as the small-town sheriff who also functions as a serial killer. Cast includes Jessica Alba. Sun 19 8pm Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky 2010 15 Based on Chris Greenhalgh's Coco & Igor, exploring the electric relationship between the French fashion icon and the radical Russian-born composer. A fiery story of two creative giants. Subtitled (French/Russian).
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER
Thu 04 8pm No Impact Man: The Documentary 2009 U We follow Colin Beavan as he finds out whether it’s possible to live in Manhattan with no negative effect on the environment. See Colin turn off the electricity, eat the right things - and irritate his caffeine and TV-addicted wife. Sun 07 7.30pm Black Death 2010 15 A scary thriller about a knight’s pilgrimage to a mysterious village. But why is this place untouched from the Bubonic Plague while the rest of England is afflicted? The Wicker Man is a definite influence in this British chiller. Sun 14 7.30pm Gainsbourg 2010 15 Serge Gainsbourg, the French singer-songwriter and badlybehaved legend, is most famous for ‘Je T’Aime’ and for seducing many beautiful women. But this film shows lesserknown sides to him – such as his time in Nazi-occupied Paris. Subtitled (French).
Sun 26 8pm La Danse 2009 PG The Paris Opera Ballet is one of the world’s great ballet companies. La Danse shows how they function from the rehearsal to performance of seven ballets, illustrating tensions between commercial sensibility and creative integrity. Subtitled (French).
Thu 02 8pm Ken Russell’s Altered States 1980 18 Directed By Ken Russell (Women in Love), written by Paddy Chayefsky (Network). Altered States is a science fiction cult classic about a doctor’s revolutionary mind experiments. As visually overwhelming as when it came out in 1980 – Altered States is a perfect film to see in our HD-upgraded cinema. Sun 05 7.30pm Bronco Bullfrog 1969 12 A cult film of the 60s and a cinematic example of Mod culture, Bronco Bullfrog was largely improvised by a nonprofessional cast of youths from East London and features the perennial problems of being teenage. Includes a great 60s soundtrack. Sun 12 7.30pm The Kid 2010 Cert tbc Actor/director Nick Moran has completed his second feature film since directing Telstar. The Kid is a film translation of the bestselling biography of Michael Lewis – about a life of “council estates, care and crime”. Cast includes Nastascha McElhone and James Fox.
Sun 24 7.30pm Ajami 2009 Cert 15 Drugs! Cops! Gangs! An Oscar-nominated Israeli film, set in Jaffa, about a drive-by shooting and a war between two crime clans. Co-written by Palestinian Scandar Copti, this is tense, gripping and reminiscent of films such as Amores Perros. Brilliant. Subtitled (Arabic/Hebrew) Sun 31 7.30pm Evil Dead 2 1987 18 Before making blockbuster Spiderman, director Sam Raimi was making his name in the horror genre. Evil Dead II is a stylised, gory follow-up to success story The Evil Dead, and a rollercoaster ride to boot. Sure it’s scary, but it’s a laugh riot too.
CULT CHOICE:
Sun 19 7.30pm The Rum Diary 2010 Cert tbc Directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail &I) and adapted from Hunter S Thompson’s novel. The Rum Diary stars Johnny Depp as journalist Paul Kemp who travels down to San Juan to become more acquainted with rum, women and a cast of screwball characters.
Heartless
Sun 21 7.30pm Philip Ridley’s Heartless 2010 18 Writer Philip Ridley is best known for plays such as The Fastest Clock in the Universe - and Heartless is as imaginative, scary and intelligent as you’d expect from this phenomenal talent. A young man with a birthmark on his face makes a deal with what-might-be-the-Devil. Sun 28 7.30pm When You’re Strange 2009 Cert 15 Director Tom DiCillo directs this “hypnotic” documentary film about 60s rock quartet The Doors, and examines the revolutionary impact of their music plus singer Jim Morrison’s legacy to the world. Johnny Depp narrates.

MUSIC Howard Jones (Acoustic Show)
David Devant & His Spirit Wife
Fri 01 October 8pm Auditorium
Sat 27 November 6.45pm Auditorium
Keyboard legend Howard Jones comes to town with a show featuring new material from his critically acclaimed ‘Ordinary Heroes’ album alongside the hits such as ‘ What Is Love’ , ‘New Song’ , ‘Like To Get To Know You Well’, ‘No One Is To Blame’, ‘Everlasting Love’ and the haunting ‘Hide and Seek’.
Comic Dave Gorman is always “stupidly excited” by their music (a dizzying blend of indie and art-rock – inspired by post-punk and Bowie) and considers them a “brilliant band”. Unsurprisingly, Devant have a large hardcore following who will pursue them anywhere, demanding that they play those infectious 90’s anthems ‘Ginger’ and ‘Cookie’, plus everything else in their phenomenal back catalogue. Infamous for turning gigs into ‘art’ – you never know quite what to expect from this unique band. A must see.
This acoustic show will feature Howard on piano and vocals, accompanied by Jonathan Atkinson on percussion. Telling stories and anecdotes from his 26-year career, he’ll take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. £15 £14 concs £13 members

'An Opera For Stolen Voices' is a world exclusive and a rare opportunity not to be missed.

Dario Fo, Nobel laureate and Italy’s most important living playwright, not only writes but also directs this powerful one-man show. Starring collaborator Mario Pirovano, the play explores the life of one of the world’s best-known saints, Saint Francis of Assisi. Pirovano is manic, engaging and unforgettable as the storytelling monk who aims to spread Christ’s message with unruly humour. This is fringe theatre at its most electrifying.
A day in the life of a full-time confetti factory worker. Full of optimism, he makes confetti - cutting, perforating, shredding - all day, every day - but he has ambitions, dreams and fears beyond factory life. Non-Native Invasive and the Ha-Project
Jerwood Photography Prize 2008 Winner Martina Lindqvist's project A Thousand Little Suns is influenced by an interest in spatial psychology, and more precisely the emotive effects of landscapes and forested wilder land. It takes a contemplative look at the northern landscapes of Ostrobothnia in central Finland, which during the autumn and winter months should be shrouded by an impenetrable darkness, but instead finds itself lit by a thousand glowing lights. The lights are neither natural nor intentional, but a byproduct of an armada of industrial sized greenhouses scattered around the area, changing it into something weird and alien - something that seems impossible to the rational mind.
Mon 1 November - Sat 11 December Canadian artist Aidan McNeill’s photography series 'Non-Native Invasive' investigates species placed on the English DEFRA list for control and eradication. Beautiful images of the condemned plants are displayed with photo-montages of UK controlled species. Aidan’s photographic work deals with geography and is anchored in history and portraiture. Her practice is about collective experience; what it is to be human within a period of technological dominance and how that affects or displaces certain landscapes and activities.
Modern Masterpieces Student and Recent Graduate Exhibition
13 December - 22 January 2011 We present two contemporary artists creating work in the traditional medium of painting: Katie Tunn and Mark Metcalfe.
Mon 20 September - Sat 30 October The pick of the bunch from a call-out for talented students and recent graduates produced a fantastic mix of painting, illustration, photography, installation and video. Featuring beautiful prints from Ruth Rachel Binfor’s ‘Sequence of Books’, large colourrich paintings by Christopher Sharp, photography by Hannah Laycock, a huge lonely hearts banner by Lucy Hobbs and playful illustration by Emma Morris.
Poking fun at what we consider vulgar and how we appreciate things with age, local artist Katie Tunn exhibits her series of recognisable National Gallery postcards, altered with paint to include some of the trappings of modern consumer society. How do we feel about these symbols of our modern consumer culture invading such revered works and would the old masters have included them if they had been painting today?
Video pieces on the MicroGallery screen by Sarah Filmer, Ruaidhri Ryan and Isabel Lima. Showing in the Micro-Gallery is a slide show of The Ha-Project, a collaborative online dialogue of photographic images between Aidan and Finnish artist Hanna Korhonen. www.aidan-mcneill.com
Mark Metcalfe’s paintings reflect a preoccupation with memory and nostalgia, where an image can posit a peculiar melancholy or sense of the uncanny, through a memorialization of the past. Metcalfe’s paintings, prints and sculptural works are dense with memory and cultural emblems we can recognise, whilst equally implying a new and perhaps foreign language of myth and allegory.
