A Second Bite At The Apple – The Beatles After almost two decades, Apple and Apple have kissed and made up (mwah) and now, once again, The Beatles’ music is everywhere and you – yes you – can buy it all over again. Ah, how cynical we have become, or maybe not…. if The Beatles really are “The Beatles” they should be scratching around your iPhone. No? Yes? We don’t know, so we asked 3 of our finest music-literate friends. by Beat Read more on www.beatmagazine.co.uk
Double Jeopardy – a dad’s life with twins When we first found out that my wife Helen was expecting twins, my initial reaction, after the swearing had stopped, was to ask her who the father of the other one was. Here I was; a man of very little experience of babies and children; already wondering what the hell I was letting myself in for, and I find out that there’s going to be two of the little buggers. You don’t really know what to think. I didn’t know what having one was like, so two at once?! by Andy Sylvester

Kapow! Whoosh! Whack! Yes, forget “swingeing” “painful” and “axe”, this year’s new world of cultural excitement is so good it has its own (much better) vocabulary! On behalf of everything and everyone creative, alternative, different, beautiful, new and thrilling, welcome to 2011, probably the best year ever. Forgive me if I hop over the well trodden paragraph of asking you to support your local arts centre in these tricky times, yada yada yada. If you’re reading this then you either already do, are in danger of doing so... or are waiting to see the dentist. Either way your palms are surely sweaty with anticipation and we’re half way towards doing what we do best. You may be relieved to know that I don’t believe making The Firestation survive is your job, it’s mine. You’ll also be pleased to know that finding an inspiring, 4 dimensional 21st century culture for you to dive into isn’t your task either, it’s ours. So, if you’re looking for a win win return on your lifestyle investment, in the words of Jim Morrison “get here, and we’ll do the rest”. Before we power slide into my traditional big up of what’s going down, let me make a quick introduction to our new Box Office Manager. You, meet Emma Terry. Emma Terry, meet you. Emma comes to us with a strong track record in the UK broadcasting and entertainment industry, before heading up the marketing and box office operations at The Electric Theatre & Cranleigh Arts Centre amongst others. We’re delighted to have her on board. Anyhoot, before the sun sets, highlights and other good bits this time include brand new twisted pop cabaret from Frisky & Mannish (p5 ), our first album launch with To Arms Etc (p2 ), live film scores with Siouxsie and the Banshees legend Steven Severin (p3), cutting edge new theatre production Threadbare Greebo (p9) and a unique double of James Yorkston and Josie Long (p3). There’s more, loads more, over there.... Things we may or may not be doing that you should Google anyway; Mirrors (the band), Frisky and Mannish, Roaves and Roams Magazine, Csaba Kis Róka, Wooden Shjips. Dan

COMEDY Christian Reilly, Imran Yusuf and Diane Spencer Thu 27 January 8pm Basement Studio Headlining is Christian Reilly, member of Rich Hall's Perrier Award-winning Otis Lee Crenshaw act - and a brilliant comic in his own right. Also on the bill is the incredible Imran Yusuf - the superfast, street-smart comic who gave a phenomenal performance at Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow. His brand of political comedy about his life as a Muslim is cheeky, charming and "deeply human". A superstar in the making! Plus support from Diane Spencer.
Sol Bernstein Thu 24 February 8pm Basement Studio After 25 years of semi-retirement, playing nursing homes - Sol Bernstein is back where he belongs: in smokey nightclubs performing to drunks. A one-man Special Show

GALLERY Modern Masterpieces & The Epiphany of Ramon Llull A duo exhibition: Katie Tunn and Mark Metcalfe. 13 December - 22 January 2011 Local artist Katie Tunn pokes fun at the vulgar and how people appreciate things with age. Tunn exhibits her series of recognisable National Gallery postcards and alters them with paint to include what is known as an entrapment of modern consumer society. Raising awareness of the possible fading of traditions and developing the question of how the viewer feels about these symbols invading the classic images. www.katietunn.com Mark Metcalfe contributes with a Triptych of paintings which relate to a very old allegory about the epiphany of the philosopher Ramon Llull. These images are painted using a specific light and dramatic pose to question the function of painting in a historic sense as a means of relaying religious and allegorical themes. The characters in them act as cultural emblems/archetypes that touch the viewers on both conscious and unconscious levels. The Epiphany of Ramon Llull. The Past as an Imperfect Present. www.markametcalfe.co.uk
Emily Kirby 25 January - 6 March Emily Kirby is fascinated by the concept of tribe and subculture and considers it to be a route of exploration offering endless possibilities. She explores techniques in which she can portray people in a free and powerful way, celebrating their identity. Concerned with the study of people, Kirby sees the figure as a landscape in itself and challenges herself to capture the emotions portrayed through an individual’s portraiture. Using paint on canvas or linen, Kirby allows herself to instil a vital energy into each one of her pieces meaning each work captures the involvement the artist has with the work. www.emilykirby.org

Horizontal Paper Works is a collection of lightweight, poppy-vibe pieces by Tamar Lev-On. It has said that “The pieces will either make you smile or think but most likely do both” The show is all paper related and includes illustrations, collages, photographs, post-it pieces and more all in which entertain the viewers. www.tamarlevon.com/hpw Working in a variety of different mediums, Arran Gregory’s work is often heavily inspired by themes of nature. His mirrored visions of the animal kingdom blur the lines between Design and Art in an attempt to visually recompose the innate beauties of the natural world. www.arrangregory.com Martyn Thomas creates mixed medium images that attract the eyes of the audience immediately and create entrancing animated videos that leave the viewers in awe. www.stitchthat.tv

LEARNING Educational & Community Work The Firestation Learning Programme, which includes our classes, workshops, and the projects that we work on with schools and community groups, is delivered in partnership with the Windsor Boys’ School. This innovative partnership enables the Windsor Boys’ School to reach learners of all ages across Windsor and helps fulfill the school’s role as a community provider. Through this partnership The Firestation works closely with other local schools, colleges and community organisations to establish and develop creative projects with teachers, creative practitioners and students. The latest of these projects is the Community Theatre Project, which involves students from the Boys’ School, Windsor Girls’ School and adults. The group meets weekly and is led by drama leaders from one of our longest serving resident companies, Everyday Theatre. All of our resident companies play their part in delivering learning opportunities to children, young people and adults from across Windsor and beyond. In the coming months look out for news on new dance, theatre and circus projects (yes, circus!).
We’re always looking for new community partners to work with. If you are involved in a group or organisation of any sort and you think that the arts might be able to play a role, even if you’re not sure how, do get in touch. Dave will be maintaining the established programme, which includes public classes and workshops, the Artist in Residence programme at Windsor Boys’ School and the four local middle schools, INSET courses for teachers and workshop opportunities for students. He is also particularly looking to develop long-term projects with community partners.
For more information about The Firestation’s Education and Community Programme, or to discuss future partnership projects please contact Dave Howard, Education and Participation Manager on 01753 866 865 or david@firestationartscentre.com.
