CONTENTS Dan Eastmond Managing Director

A shopping list, we joked in the office, as I scratched my head and moaned about not knowing what to write to you this time. "Everybody's talking about funding" I said "maybe we should talk about something else, something more exciting?" "THE FUTURE!!" chorused the reply from my trusty office chums (ah, the delight of working with such people!).

02. MUSIC 06. COMEDY

So here is our shopping list, a list of questions really, that we've been talking a lot about over recent months, in the office, email exchanges, at conferences and at the bar.

08. THEATRE

What will future cinemas look like?

10.

SUNDAYS AT THE FIRESTATION/CINEMA

12.

LITERARY

13.

GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL

If theatres have been the same for millennia, what could a C21st theatre be? What would a wholly independent arts sector, unfunded and rich in surpluses, feel like? What is the dress code of our minute by minute relationship with the world and each other?

09. DANCE

14.

KIDS & YOUNG PEOPLE

How can visual artists work with the modern aesthetic born of games consoles and virtual exchanges?

16.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Where is the music that soars with the sounds of our contemporary hopes and dreams?

21.

LEARNING

How do you champion difference without entrenching its ‘otherness’?

22. GALLERY

Where does mainstream culture become low culture, and does it matter?

24. GET INVOLVED 25. BARS & HIRE

add your question here, rip this out and give it back to us!

Whoa there ideas pony!!! We don’t need this flurry of queries, you say! We only popped in for a latte! Oh well alright then, spoil sport... A quick blast through the truly spectacular stuff coming your way this summer and I’m off to have a chamomile tea! The return of Ska-b-q (ifc), The Horn The Hunt album launch (p.2), Robin Hitchcock (p.4), Firestation Goes Pop (p.5), Reginald D Hunter (p.7), Shappi Khorsandi (p.7), The Firestation’s first Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (p.13), Fashion & Fabric classes (p.19) and way too much more to fit in here!! Things we may or may not be doing that you should Google anyway; Nomad Cinema, Maaike Schoorel, Dutch Uncles, Tame Impala, Art Licks.

All details are correct at time of going to press. The Firestation reserves the right to modify or cancel any event if unforeseen circumstances arise. If we cancel we shall inform you as soon as possible and offer you a full refund.

MUSIC . . . C I S U M W E N L ESSENTIA Y A D I R F T S R I F Y R ...EVE The Horn The Hunt (Album Launch Party) Fri 06 May The Horn the Hunt are serene female vocals, atmospheric synth, electronic beats and creeping guitar. This Windsor gig marks the 1st date of a national tour for the release of the album 'Depressur Jolie' on White Label Music (co-run by Anne from Add N to X). £6/£3 nt

The Horn The Hu

Dead Mask Club plus Kieland Ridge, Soldiers of the Lost Art Fri 03 June Dead Mask Club

Dead Mask Club are four hard rocking troubadours creating quite an impression with their single Gun Dog. Think Mogwai, Jim Jones Revue and other darker, edgier things. Kieland Ridge claim their influences as Foo Fighters, The White Stripes and Jimi Hendrix. Soldiers Of The Lost Art are good, muscular support. £6/£3

The Piney Gir Country Roadshow Fri 01 July The Piney Gir Country Roadshow

Ignition is the first Friday of every month and will include indie DJs and drinks at studentfriendly prices. Note: there is no Ignition on August 05 due to a Russell Kane preview show. But look out for a replacement date that month.

02

Piney grew up in isolation in the American Midwest. She joined her first band, a synth pop duo who released a single with Mute and toured Europe with Erasure. Some would describe her musical direction now as “indie Dolly Parton”. If you like Patsy Cline, Gram Parsons and good whiskey, the chances are you’re going to love Piney. £6/£3

MUSIC

Robyn Hitchcock (Special Acoustic Show) Thu 02 June 8pm Auditorium The psychedelic legend and songwriting genius, Robyn Hitchcock, plays an intimate acoustic set at The Firestation. (His acoustic sets are something of a rarity these days, and it’s been some years since the last one). A massive influence on REM (Peter Buck joined his band for a while) and a founding member of The Soft Boys – Robyn Hitchcock has taken time off from playing recent Bowie, Beefheart and Beatles sets (with Graham Coxon and Green Gartside, among others) and acting in The Manchurian Candidate to play us a special selection from his own well-loved (and extensive) back catalogue. This promises to be a night of surreal, quirky and melancholic lyrics and melodies. Support from Terry Edwards (Gallon Drunk/Lydia Lunch/ The Higsons). £13.50

Sound of Rum (as part of The River Rat Pack Tour) 24 May 8pm Basement Studio Sound of Rum formed in the summer of 2008. Since then rapper Kate Tempest, guitarist Archie Marsh and drummer Ferry Lawrenson have been playing gigs all over Britain, at every festival going - whether on actual stages or just busking in the rain. They’ve been played on Rob Da Bank’s Radio 1 and have been in for a hub session with Stephen Merchant on BBC6music. They’ve also recently finished recording their first full length album for Sunday Best. Support from Beans On Toast. The River Rat Pack is an entirely unique concept setting sail once a year. Taking a group of talented, upcoming musicians on three barges to live for a week and cruise from London to Oxford playing free gigs all the way (Mumford & Sons played last year!) You'll catch the whole line up playing in venues each night and on top of the barge during the day. Free

Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets

Kevin Precious in Not Appropriate: a show about teaching Thu 07 July 8pm Basement Studio Having successfully premiered the show at the 2010 Brighton Fringe, Kevin Precious has been touring this hugely popular show at theatres and arts centres throughout the land. 'Not Appropriate' is the most overused term of disapproval in the teacher's canon. Join Kevin as he explores his former life as a teacher. A show that will appeal to anyone who has ever taught or – for that matter – been to school.

(Puppet-related mayhem) Absolutely stupidly hilarious! Taking on anything from James Bond to Star Wars, these guys bring you a brand new show full of songs, sketches, socks and violence. Having appeared on MTV, GMTV, The Culture Show and The One Show, these socks are unstoppable…. “What makes this show so good is that the duo's material would be funny even if presented conventionally. When delivered by two socks, it becomes genius” - Fest

Very funny and unsurprisingly so, as Kevin makes a living from MCing at comedy clubs around the country. “If he were any more laid back he'd fall over we fell over laughing” - The Evening Standard £8.50/£7.50 concs and members

LITERARY Firestation Book Swap Thu 19 May, 16 June, 21 July, 18 August (every third Thursday of the month) 7.45pm A literary event with a difference Novelist Marie Phillips, author of Gods Behaving Badly and publisher Scott Pack continue to host an evening of conversation and banter in this increasingly popular literary event. Radio 4 and various literary festivals can’t seem to get enough of Book Swap. And with good reason. You won’t hear boring speeches, the same old questions or authors reading from their latest book - but you could witness almost anything else. Audience members are required to bring an unwanted book along with them which they will have an opportunity to swap for another. And there's tea and cake!

Previous authors, by the way, have included: Robert McCrum, Kate Williams, Sue Cook, Ray Robinson, Marcus Chown, Kate Clanchy, Robert Hudson, Matt Rudd, Andrew Kaufman and Matt Beaumont. May authors will be: novelist Essie Fox whose Victorian novel The Somnambulist is creating quite a buzz, and Robin Harvie (pictured) who has written Why We Run, about his obsession with the sport. “This is exactly the kind of blog-linked, local event that publishers should be really encouraging, a sort of odd cross between a public reading and a book group” - Emma Townshend, The Independent. Don’t forget to bring a book! £5

Firestation Book Swap continues to go from strength to strength, with

LEARNING Learning & Participation The Firestation Learning Programme includes our classes, workshops and the projects that we work on with schools and community groups. The Firestation works closely with a number of local schools, colleges and community organisations to establish and develop creative projects with teachers, creative practitioners and students. The latest of these projects is the Community Theatre Project, which involves students from Windsor Boys’ School, Windsor Girls’ School and adults. The group meets weekly and is led by drama leaders from one of our longest serving resident companies, Everyday Theatre. Watch out for news of their first film shortly. All of our resident companies play their part in delivering learning opportunities to children, young people and adults from across Windsor and beyond, as well as developing brand new, innovative work. From No Handbags to 2Headed Pigeon, from 4Motion Dance Theatre to Everyday Theatre, The Firestation is proud to work with such inspirational artists.

Meanwhile our 2012 Cultural Olympiad project, The Games Walk, is growing nicely. The Games Walk is an artist led regeneration project, public art trail and performance festival on the bridges and riverbanks between the Brunel designed Windsor Railway Bridge and Dorney Rowing Lake. The Games Walk will see artists and crafts people working alongside local schools and community groups to turn existing transport and river structures in to a public arts playground. During the Olympic Games The Games Walk will include performances and activities designed to showcase the cutural achievements in the region and enrich the visitor experience. We’re always looking for new community partners to work with. If you are involved in a group or organisation of any sort and you think that the arts might be able to play a role, even if you’re not sure how, do get in touch.

For more information about The Firestation’s Education and Community Programme, or to discuss future partnership projects please contact The Firestation on 01753 866 865 or learning@firestationartscentre.com.

Jean Denison focuses her art on illustration, where each image captivates the audience with breath taking depth and detail.
