Beat is a magazine dedicated to showcasing and feeding into the cultural life of Windsor and the surrounding region. Beat provides a platform for the artists, writers, dancers, photographers, musicians and filmmakers living and working in the region, talks to their audience and promotes a broad spectrum of cultural activity and debate.
What is Art? It seems deeply unfashionable, but I find myself asking one particular question an awful lot at the moment. I am not someone obsessed with understanding, nor the need to control by definition, quite the contrary I hope. Nonetheless, as I continue to look at how arts organisations operate, the make up of audiences and the challenge of economics, this question keeps nagging away at me so I’m going to ask it anyway. What is Art? by Dan Eastmond

Julie-Ann Corrigan at The Hay Literary Festival 2011 I don’t know why, but I slipped off my shoes and walked barefoot to the petite stage. I stood looking at the audience, at Paul Blezard and Siobhan from the adminstration team in particular. My body temperature increased and I threw my cardigan to the floor (later my husband told me it was a suitably dramatic gesture). My throat tightened and I heard my heart pumping too loudly in my ears, yet a random and not very literary quote popped into my brain, ‘…Sometimes your whole life comes down to just one moment…’ by Julie-Ann Corrigan

CONTENTS Dan Eastmond Managing Director
Autumn.... after the peculiar but good ghost town feeling of August, beautiful summer days and way too much jerk chicken, this time of year always gets me excited. It leaves me feeling a delicious nostalgia for all the amazing events to have graced us since this time last year, and gives me a huge sense of excitement for the coming months. Ever since school September has been like this, it must be 14 years of new jumpers, sharing tall tales of summertime exploits and knowing that you are just that little bit bigger than you were! And that, I am sure, is why this particular note to you is so ultra exciting. We are three! Yes, little old us is a cup of tea, trois, triplicate, troika! Still a fairly small number I grant you, but considerably more noteworthy than two (it has better songs about it and is a bit naughtier!). Three whole years of the new, the loved and the unexpected! It’s been fun, and the future looks even better! We have a whole bunch of great things for you from September, like Richard Herring (p.7), Led Bib (p.2), Germaine Greer (p.13), all new Firestarters Youth Theatre (p.20), a bucketful of new classes plus the chance to vote for the films you watch (Film Democracy p.17) or get horizontal in The Auditorium to some of the greatest albums ever made (Lie Back & Think Of p.5)! All that is before we even leave the building! Step outside with us and there’s The Big Picnic on 10th September, The Games Walk (our 2012 public art project on the banks of the Thames), Beat Magazine, or new publishing project Fireythings and soon to be launched Lemonade Gallery & Workspaces!

The ensuing media storm saw them reach in excess of 20 million people as they performed on TV & Radio sessions including Channel 4 TV News with Jon Snow and Radio 4’s Front Row.

Being Sellers Sat 17 September 8pm Auditorium Acted by David Boyle as Peter Sellers. Written by Carl Caulfield. Being Sellers is Carl Caulfield's one-man show about the comic genius of former Goon Show comedian Peter Sellers. From Chief Inspector Clouseau to Doctor Strangelove, Sellers was able to transform himself completely into his characters. But who was he really? And what was the personal cost of his genius? Actor David Boyle slowly unpeels the enigma of Sellers and reveals an idea of 'who' the man really was. The play opens with Sellers on his death bed: the voice of his dead Mother tries to direct him to join her on the other side. Sellers' characters are employed to find out why the complex actor did the things he did, and to find a way out of the purgatory he now finds in himself.

Indefinite Articles Theatre Company bring the much-loved story of Pinocchio to life but do so with a difference. Set in a carpenter’s workshop, this creative and innovative production tells the story of the mischievous boy helped along by the shouts of the audience, and with flourishes of improvisation. The endlessly versatile set transforms into snowy slopes, a rocking ship and a theatre for shadow puppetry. With just a live flute player and a simple set that is essentially a work bench covered in tools, performer Steve Tiplady creates an imaginative world where clothes pegs symbolise talking crickets, shadow puppet metal clamps are the mouths of whales, an upside-down hat rack represents a tree and two brushes represent a fox. These inventive touches are a joy to watch and the children in the audience will certainly seem entranced by the tale.
A special Chistmas show for kids Thu 15 December (4.30pm) Fri 16 December (6pm) Sat 17 December (11am)
Tiplady is also perfectly tuned into a child’s sense of humour, delighting in some of the nastier turns in the original Pinocchio story and this brings a modern edge to the story. Recommended ages: 5-12. Running time 50 mins.

LEARNING Learning & Participation The Firestation Learning Programme includes our classes, workshops and the projects that we work on with schools and community groups. The Firestation works closely with a number of local schools, colleges and community organisations to establish and develop creative projects with teachers, creative practitioners and students. All of our resident companies play their part in delivering learning opportunities to children, young people and adults from across Windsor and beyond, as well as developing brand new, innovative work. From No Handbags to 2Headed Pigeon, from 4Motion Dance Theatre to Chris Dugdale, The Firestation is proud to work with such inspirational artists.
Meanwhile our 2012 Cultural Olympiad project, The Games Walk, is growing nicely. The Games Walk is an artist led regeneration project, public art trail and performance festival on the bridges and riverbanks between the Brunel designed Windsor Railway Bridge and Dorney Rowing Lake. The Games Walk will see artists and crafts people working alongside local schools and community groups to turn existing transport and river structures in to a public arts playground. During the Olympic Games The Games Walk will include performances and activities designed to showcase the cutural achievements in the region and enrich the visitor experience. We’re always looking for new community partners to work with. If you are involved in a group or organisation of any sort and you think that the arts might be able to play a role, even if you’re not sure how, do get in touch.
For more information about The Firestation’s Education and Community Programme, or to discuss future partnership projects please contact The Firestation on 01753 866 865 or learning@firestationartscentre.com.
