CONTENTS Dan Eastmond Managing Director

At the end of last year in The Firestation office, sometimes over coffee in the bar, we’d often have conversations about how exciting this year was going to be. Not just because it's 2012, a year which needs no introduction, but also because of all the projects and new ideas which seemed to be springing up and growing as we approached... today. We even called our New Years Eve event 'Into The Future' to celebrate that sense of movement and change we - and you - were all feeling. How exciting it is then, as the sun begins to warm our backs again, to be in amongst all this new stuff, watching it happen and enjoying the energy and uncertainty (a very positive emotion that suffers from bad press!) that is defining 2012. From massive events like the Cultural Olympiad and Jubilee to this summer's round of festivals (those that are still standing), art markets and new venues, to the underground experiments we haven't even heard of yet. Whether you take your culture with a Royal flavor or prefer a less established brew, whether you feel the love in a basement full of b-boys or a grandstand packed with g-girls doesn’t matter. There have never been more opportunities for people to come together and do what they love, and that after all, is what life’s all about. For our part, in our little corner of it all, the next few months are all about The Games Walk art trail (yes, that thing we’ve been banging on about for two years) being installed riverside from the Brocas to Dorney Lake. That and The Games Walk Performance Festival, two non-stop weeks of performances at The Firestation and Dorney Lake during the Olympics (look for the purple stamp inside here and get in touch if you want to be a part of it!). Plus two Big Picnics!! One in June to celebrate the Jubilee and one in September to mark the end of the Cultural Olympiad. Oh, and everything over these next 34 pages.... Have fun, enjoy the sunshine and make sure you do something nobody expected! Things we may or may not be doing that you should Google anyway; Fireythings, nomad.org.uk, Vertedance, irational.org, Brian Lock

The Luminites & PW Sun 03 June as part of the Big Picnic Throughout time the British music industry has hosted a stream of teen idols – acts that appeal to the popular 13-19 market. And with the UK urban scene thriving right now, it makes sense for this to apply here too. Step forward PW. With Chipmunk now a veteran of the game at the – ahem – ripe old age of 20, this 19-year-old from Edmonton, North London is primed to smoothly slide into this spot. Who is PW? you may ask; this charismatic young rapper is set to take the music scene by storm! With the release of his debut mixtape NKOTB (New Kid on the Block), supporting both Dappy & Mindless Behaviour on tour, TV & Radio playlist - PW's ever growing fan base and hard work will make sure you wont need to ask that question twice.

Beatrick Thu 10 May 8.00pm Basement Studio Vid Warren and Tess Cartwright bring you a groundbreaking piece fusing music, theatre and circus. Beatrick follows the story of four characters embarking on an intense tour. Using technical wizardry and pioneering, exciting kinds of beatbox fusion, Beatrick truly ‘indulges the rhythm’. The show exploits a stark contrast between the pretentious, highly skilled, over-serious performers and the coy, nerdy, character-masked stage-hands. Without a single word spoken, Beatrick relies on whole body expression and timing to deliver laugh out loud physical-comedy. This electric fusion will be followed by a beatboxing session from Vid, a highlight of numerous festivals, ‘Wow! Sharp skills, cosmic algorhythms and simple fun!’ - Gyllian Raby, Associate Professor at Brock U, Canada Tickets £8, £6 concs/members

Millar & Spencer: Jazz Duo Fri 08 June 8.00pm Doors from 7.00pm Basement Studio Playing together for a number of years, Ian and Dominic play melodic improvisations on jass standards and originals. Based in Edinburgh, the duo has regularly and extensively toured rural Scotland bringing jazz to small communities in intimate settings. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music their latest CD is called “The Isle of Skye” and was promoted by them during a mini tour of the island. Their style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of a tune while maintaining the concept and groove behind the tune. The result is a very accessible, melodic style which allows them to explore, improvise and develop ideas without losing the essence of the piece. ‘...expect warm, intelligent, reflective, human music...’ Tickets £12, £10 concs, £9 members

The Songs of Leonard Cohen Keith James in Concert Tue 19 June 8.00pm Auditorium Revered by the entire music community; Cohen’s sense of prose and wry humour wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line. His recent world tour has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of the songs in their original form. Keith James; with a reputation of performing in this exact way, having an undying love of the pure song, gives you this: a concert of amazing material in the most intimate way imaginable. ‘Certainly the UK s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ The Guardian www.keith-james.com Tickets £14, £12 members

Vampyr - Steven Severin Wed 04 July 8.00pm Auditorium Steven Severin returns to give audiences a rare opportunity to hear his new score for Vampyr, the third in Severin’s ongoing film accompaniment series - Music For Silents. Loosely based on Sheridan Le Fanu's genredefining, 1872 vampire tale, Carmilla, Vampyr follows the fortunes of Allan Gray, a young student of the occult, who takes rooms at a village inn, little realising that the region is cursed by vampires. In the dead of night, Gray receives a mysterious nocturnal visitor, who leaves behind a package labelled 'To be opened after my death' – and from that moment on, events take ever darker turns. Shot with a silent film aesthetic despite being within the sound era, Vampyr is an alternative take on the cinematic vampire, creating an intense, nightmarish atmosphere that haunts the mind long after the lights go up. Tickets £10, £9 concs, £8 members

The Tin Violin Directed by John Hoggarth and Dean Nolan Fri 22 June 8.00pm Auditorium The life of the violinist and composer Joseph Emidy is one of the most extraordinary of modern times. Born in Guinea, West Africa in 1775, at the height of European colonialism, Emidy was first captured as a slave by the Portuguese, then kidnapped by the British Navy, serving as a fiddler on The Indefatigable during the French wars. Landing at Falmouth, Cornwall and being presented with a magical tin violin made by an illiterate miner, Emidy became a musical genius of the early nineteenth century. Funny, tragic and compelling, the play offers an extraordinary parable of humanity that raises questions about identity, belonging and place, and also turns upside- down preconceived ideas about West Britain and the continent of Africa. Tickets £12, £11 concs, £10 members, Family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) £40

Steven Berkoff’s Graft: Tales of an Actor

Recommended for ages 10+

Fri 15 June 8.00pm Auditorium From the acerbic pen of theatre legend, Steven Berkoff, comes the life story of Harry, a good actor and a dedicated artist, who is often out of work, rejected and desperate to practise his craft. From his first audition to enter drama school to his final curtain at Leicester Square, GRAFT unflinchingly exposes the reality and questions the sacrifice. GRAFT won George Dillon a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 2000 and a nomination for The Stage's Best Actor Award. The show has since been seen in more than 10 countries. ‘Graft blow-torches the facade off the acting world and is stunningly executed by the genius of George Dillon. Vocally compelling, Dillon is an actor with it all. His electric desperation and vitriol collide with painful cravings of the soul to produce a truly powerful performance. Never indulgent, Dillon's physicality is organically and poignantly precise. His own idiosyncratic talent soars.’ The List Tickets £12, £10 concs, £9 members
