Contents... At last, summer again! Here's to long hazy days, dazzling mornings and undoubtedly our best ever programme of “musicfilmcomedytheatredanceart” (our new word, made easily enough).
1.
Cinema

6.
Theatre
Julian Cope (p4), Scanner (p4), Arthur Brown (p5), Amy's Ghost (p3), The Scarecrow (p6), Will Hodgson (p8), Days of Last (p3), The Youth Arts Festival (p10), Book Swaps (p19), cutting edge video art (p20) - and an extravagantly chockablock cinema programme which simply has to be enjoyed no matter how balmy the summer evenings.
7.
Comedy
There's a curious time lag effect when I begin writing my little bit of hurraying, seeing as you may well be reading this four months after my moment of word fishing and stone squeezing! I could tell you how great our first weekend of glorious t-shirt weather was (aeroplane free too!), but by now the first kiss of summer could well be a just hazy, lazy memory. It's tempting to talk elections as we're currently wading through a flood of promises, but if you're reading this in midsummer you may have already decided that it wasn't worth the fuss anyway!
13. Kids’ Club Cinema
Hmm... OK, in that case allow me to briefly mention something guaranteed, whatever the date, to be warm and intoxicating, honest and reliable. Born midway through 2009, our new online project Beat Magazine is fast turning into an essential dealer in cultural insights, interviews and ideas. Expertly edited by Mel Gow, with authors pooled from around the region, Beat manages to impress me every issue by joining the dots between all the myriad strands of creative output that are happening right here and now. I seriously recommend checking it out (there's a sneak preview on page 17) at www.beatmagazine.co.uk.

After the 80s neo-psychedelia rockers disbanded, Ian worked with The Wild Swans and Ian Broudie’s fledgling Lightning Seeds project, both co-writing on Jollification and adding his deep, rich and emotive voice to backing vocals.

From the creative team that brought you ‘The Gardener’, this tale of fun and furrows is told using movement, puppetry, storytelling and live music. This is the story of a lonely scarecrow and a bunch of noisy crows. The scarecrow hates the crows. Well, that’s what you’d expect. But every time he chases them off they just keep coming back. The crows can take or leave the scarecrow. They’re too busy squabbling, eating and living their lives. All he wants is to be left alone. We follow their relationship over a year, from their beginnings as enemies, to their eventual grudging friendship.
Keepers, by The Plasticine Men Sat 15 May 8pm £10 GA £9 Concs £8 Mem Two hundred years ago, twenty-two miles out to sea, two men live and work in a wooden box fifteen feet across, seventy feet above the dark ocean… Using little more than a ladder and a pair of creaky chairs, two performers and a musician conjure up the confines of the infamous Smalls Lighthouse, and the remarkable true-story it guards. A stormy tale of companionship and loss unfolds over the passing of days, and in the sweeping flashes of the lamp that the keepers tend each and every night. The Plasticine Men are a collective of theatre-smiths, scouring the land for stories that beg to be told onstage. They challenge themselves to simply create the extraordinary worlds that lurk on the edge of hearsay and history.

Warwick Cairns – The Interview “The world’s traditional weights and measures are amongst the few remaining living links we still have with our most distant ancestors – from the pre-literate tribesmen who would measure the height of their livestock with the width of their hands to the invaders from Rome who counted out their marches in thousand-pace units, the mille passus, our mile – And I cannot for the life of me understand how abolishing all of this in favour of a made-up system designed for tidy-minded bureaucrats is anything but the most shocking and ignorant cultural vandalism”. by Melanie Gow

Gordon R Brown and Katherine Jones
20
Mon 28 June 2010 - Sat 07 August 2010 Gordon is interested in the awkward relationship between us and the natural world. This fascination surfaces in his playful paintings depicting scenes of a surreal nature with various otherworldly characters of bird box men, strange animals in the forest and the odd appearance of Darwin. Katherine works with traditional forms of printmaking in conjunction with drawing and watercolour. Her work follows today’s sensitivity towards issues of protection and security using a recurring house shape, subverted structurally and contextually to simultaneously imply nurture, protection and suffocation. Her interest in the disparity between different versions of ancient stories, where repetition and imperfect reproduction has confused the original message also plays a primary role in the work’s conception.
Martina Lindqvist and Tim Sullivan Mon 09 August 2010 - Sat 18 September 2010 Jerwood Photography Prize 2008 Winner Martina Lindqvist's project A Thousand Little Suns is influenced by an interest in spatial psychology, and more precisely the emotive effects of landscapes and forested wilder land. It takes a contemplative look at the northern landscapes of Ostrobothnia in central Finland, which during the autumn and winter months should be shrouded by an impenetrable darkness, but instead finds itself lit by a thousand glowing lights. The lights are neither natural nor intentional, but a by-product of an armada of industrial sized greenhouses scattered around the area, changing it into something weird and alien—something that seems impossible to the rational mind.
