In June this year, 16 year old Akhona Xaba became the first person in KZN to receive a stem cell transplant at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. Akhona suffers from acute myeloid leukaemia, which is cancer of the body’s white blood cells. These cells are produced by a part of the body called bone marrow which fights infection. Akhona needed someone (a donor) who could provide a bone marrow so that her body could produce normal blood cells. Without that, she would die.
