Opera trademark guidelines

Purpose of these guidelines Opera’s trademarks, service marks, and logos (“Brand Assets”) are valuable properties. These guidelines apply to the authorized use of Opera Brand Assets by Opera’s employees, agents, partners, independent contractors and any third party making reference to Opera or any of its products or services. These guidelines must be followed in order to properly identify Opera’s brand names for its products and services, and to protect and enhance their value and strength. You may not use an Opera Brand Asset without express, written permission from Opera.

Disclaimer These guidelines govern your marketing and promotion of products and services that include an Opera Brand Asset. The statements contained herein are for illustrative purposes only. You are encouraged to contact Opera or refer to the governing agreement authorizing your use of an Opera Brand Asset for further information. Opera reserves the right to revise these guidelines at any time. Any modified guidelines will be published on the Opera website. It is your responsibility as a user of an Opera Brand Asset to ensure compliance with the current version of these guidelines prior to any use.

The Opera logo Opera’s logo consists of two elements, the icon and the logotype. The icon, our red "O" can be used by itself, but the logotype should always be used with the icon. Do not change the size relation between icon and logotype. "Opera" should have a capital "O" and the rest of the word in lowercase at all times.

Variations There are several official versions of the logo that can be used as specified on this page. Each has been designed for a specific use. All versions are available in both CMYK (print) and RGB (screen). The logo should appear prominently in all communication materials. Please do not attempt to create art for the Opera logo, icon, or logotype for any application. The version of the logo in red is the preferred logo and should be used wherever possible. The black-and-white version of the logo should be used in circumstances only where colors are not available. It should be used in white or black, not in any other color. On white textiles where there is only one color print option, the logo must be presented in red.

Proper use Exclusion areas

There must always be sufficient space surrounding the Opera logo to avoid competition with other visual elements and to maintain its visual impact. The recommended clear space is relative to the logo size and is equal to 50% of the icon. Allow at least this amount of clear space, so that it helps give the logo clarity.

Misuse Inconsistent use of the Opera logo and icon detracts from our brand equity and recognition. Distorting or modifying the Opera logo in any way negates the consistency we strive to achieve. These examples illustrate what not to do.

The Opera color palette

Opera has always been known for its red "O", so in Opera’s new identity, red is still the primary color. The color palette consists of a bright main red, a secondary red, a secondary palette and a neutral palette. The bright red is the preferred color and can be used on everything from backgrounds to icons, and often in combination with colors from the neutral palette. The secondary red can be used when the primary red already is in use on the surface. The secondary color palette is mostly used in infographics, buttons and for certain types of printed matter.

Typography Typography Note that you are responsible for obtaining any permission or license from the font owner. Opera does not provide such permission or functionality for its partners. Basis Grotesque: Basis Grotesque is a beautiful sans serif font from Colophone Foundry. With its strong grotesque shapes and elegant humane feel, Basis Grotesque is an ideal font for a tech-company with a focus on the human experience. For licensing questions send your enquiries to Arnfinn Hushovd, Creative Director at arnfinnh@opera.com.

Arial: In some cases it’s necessary for a fallback font as a replacement for profile font Basis Grotesque. This could be if you’re unable to obtain a licence for Basis Grotesque, or if you’re working on documents that needs to look identical on all computers. In these cases, Arial is to be used, as it’s preinstalled on most computers.

The "O" logo The "O" icon is used in connection with certain Opera products and services. The icon, our red "O" can be used by itself, but the logotype should always be used with the icon. See the section about the Opera logo.

Opera TV Store guidelines

The Opera TV Store (“OTS”) is a solution optimized for the devices of Opera’s hardware and software distribution partners (“Distributors”). OTS offers users of Distributors’ devices an interface for discovering and linking to web services (“Services”) hosted and offered by third-party content service providers (“CSPs”). CSPs which wish to offer their Services through OTS must provide the following digital versions of their Brand Assets to Opera via the OTS Submission Portal: Icons (128x128 and 512 x512 JPEG or PNG image files); Screenshot (1280×720px or larger JPEG image file); and Thumbnail (480x270 JPEG image file).

Guidelines for use of CSP brand assets

This section is a general statement regarding the proposed use and placement of CSP Brand Assets in connection with the marketing and promotion of the OTS on a particular device. CSP Brand Assets may be included in the OTS user interface and product sheets in a manner consistent with other CSP Brand Assets displayed in such interface. To promote the availability of CSP’s Services via the OTS and on the Distributor’s device, CSP Brand Assets may be included in device product sheets, user manuals and descriptions in close proximity to the phrase “Available in the Opera TV Store”. Only the CSP Brand Assets provided by the CSP should be used. Other versions of such Brand Assets will not be used without the express permission of the relevant CSP. For consistency or due to space or size limitations, however, certain nonsubstantive modifications to a CSP Brand Asset may be made, consistent with the display of all other CSP Brand Assets including: Adding a uniform outline, border or background. Adjusting the scale of the Brand Asset, provided each element retains its original placement and proportionality. Adding lighting or other effects. Alternating between color and black/white versions of a Brand Asset (no grayscale).
