C O M M U N I C AT I O N • Accurately reflect the content of the email in your subject line.
Email Protocols for Better Business Communication By: Lou Pontani, VP, Sales and Marketing Agency Division
Email communication began as a helpful tool to exchange information and is quickly evolving into a leading cause of information overload. If your inbox has become a dreaded repository of unclear and unnecessary messages, utilizing these tips to streamline and improve the flow of information will result in a decrease in frustration and an increase in productivity.
• Add a qualifier such as Action Needed, Question, or FYI in subject line to help the receiver prioritize communication. • Keep emails brief and to the point. • Use bullets or sub-headers to make email easy to scan. • Modify the subject line to reflect the conversation’s direction in lengthy exchanges. • Use email for sending information that may need to be referenced later. • Use the telephone for lengthy conversations or situations that need immediate attention.
PRODUCTIVIT Y • Don't use your inbox as a to-do list; there are better taskmanagement tools. • Empower people to do their jobs by insisting they not copy you on items they can handle without your input. • Add names to the CC or BCC lines only if all recipients need the information. • Move all read messages to organized folders or delete. • Limit your use of Reply All and encourage others to do the same. • Reduce unnecessary responses by putting No Reply Necessary at the top of the message.
COURTESY • Include your contact information in all emails and replies. • Use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. • Reply in a timely fashion. • Do not send confidential information via unsecured email. • Refrain from discussing sensitive issues in an email; tone and intention can be misunderstood. • Initiating a five-minute phone call can often resolve email exchanges that go on for days and weeks at a time.
Using email in an effective and efficient manner decreases the volume of unnecessary communication and increases your capacity to process important information, prioritize tasks and focus more clearly on high-value, business-building activities.

I LTA LO B BY DAYS Some of First American Title’s Leadership Team participated in the Illinois Land Title Association’s (ILTA) 2017 Advocacy Days April 25-26, and as in past years, we were not short on topics to discuss with our legislators. A couple of the exciting takeaways from the meetings were the focus on predictable recording fees and SB65, a proposed amendment to the Title Insurance Act which is aimed at reducing the number of bifurcated closings. Both initiatives will reduce confusion and improve efficiencies for our customers.
From Left to Right: Chris Poulsen, Mojca Anaya, Ryan Pettengill
ILTA is a statewide organization providing valuable government advocacy for title underwriters and agents, in addition to coordinating education and industry networking. First American Title actively participates every year in ILTA, this year was as important as ever as our title industry navigates through always changing regulations. Both First American Title and ILTA share a priority to protect the consumers when buying and selling real estate.

Peter J. Balanzic, Attorney Law Office of Peter J. Bilanzic 11555 S. Harlem Ave., Suite A, Worth, IL 60482 The "BLUES BROTHERS" Visit the Law Students of John Marshall Law School.
Jim Leoris, Attorney Leoris & Cohen, P.C. 622 Laurel Ave. Highland Park, IL 60035 Ok, it’s no Elvis but here you go. We were of course avid followers and season ticket holders during the Chicago Bulls Jordan/ Pippen title runs of the 90’s. In one week during the first threepeat, I ran into Bulls center Will Perdue at the now closed Byerly’s supermarket in Highland Park. That same week I again by chance saw Will at Sunset Foods and at a local pizza parlor. Fittingly, also that same week while looking for my group’s lawn seat location at Ravinia, who do I almost stumble over? Will Perdue. I believe he recognized me from our previous encounters that week. All coincidental or do you sense a bit of stalker in all of this?
Attending John Marshall Law School as an evening student, one night in the spring of 1978 I concluded my class at about 9 p.m. and was leaving the building through the main front door of the school on Plymouth Court. As I made my way to the exit (a glass revolving door), I could see directly in front of me. To my amazement, standing in the street in front of the front door of the school by the curb were several JMLS students and the actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi!!! I exited the front door and joined the group, my eyes bugging out of my head in disbelief at what I am seeing in front of me. These were, of course, famous and wellknown actors, comedians from Second City comedy in Chicago, and huge personalities. They were in town to film the movie "The Blues Brothers". Plymouth Court had been blocked off by police barricades, and there were dressing room-trailers parked on it for the actors. The elevated train (CTA) was out of action for the public as well along Van Buren Street: overhead/on the Van Buren street elevated tracks, the camera crews were filming a scene in which they were driving the elevated back and forth many times to get the right angles. There were many floodlights lighting up the night on Plymouth and Van Buren streets. The famous scene in which Carrie Fisher shoots a bazooka at the front door of a transient hotel on the corner of Plymouth and Van Buren (it no longer exists there today), blowing it wide open, was the scene de jour they were attempting to film. I watched in amazement as the elevated train was running overhead (using the old "green" elevated cars that were ancient), being used just for this movie, and the tracks being closed to the public. On the street in front of the school, the actors Aykroyd and Belushi were smoking cigarettes since they were on a break from filming their scenes. As such they engaged in light-hearted and friendly conversation with us about the school, our careers and ambitions, and what it was like living in Chicago. We were asking them questions about being a movie star and living the life of an actor, and other topics that came up at random. After a while Carrie

I was totally impressed by how friendly and casual the whole thing was. It was as if we had

known each other for years. They were as interested in us and we were in them. They signed autographs for us, laughing the whole time in a lighthearted way. We asked if they could go across the street for a beer with us (Quincy's Tap was nearby) but they declined stating

Julia and I appeared in several high school plays together. We could both sing Earth Wind & Fire like nobody's business, and she was always clapping along as she bounced around the room. She was a fine comedic actress, yes, but she couldn't just stand in front of people and entertain, like Lily Tomlin or Carol Burnett. I, meanwhile, was much funnier, far more sarcastic and irreverent, and clearly better positioned for stardom. I even achieved semi-demi-hemi-god status as a stand-up comic in college. So here I am now, tracking the legal description for a condominium with "breathtaking" views (of an air shaft and the entrance to the Kennedy Expressway). And there's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, now estimated to be worth about a billions dollars, literally.
the Blues Brothers (she declined the proposal, being involved then with Paul Simon in a
found out later that Aykroyd had actually proposed marriage to Carrie Fisher on the set of relationship). Then they had to end it, as they sought refuge in their dressing room trailers to prepare for the next scenes. We parted amicably, wishing each other well, and wondering if this had all been a dream or was it reality. Of course, John Belushi died a few years later of cocaine overdose, but the movie was released and a huge success. I have seen the movie and those scenes in it at least a dozen times since. Every time I see that scene when Carrie Fisher shoots the bazooka and blows open the door of that transient hotel, I recall that night fondly with amazement. What an experience that happened by pure chance! Like a lot of things in life, the best experiences are never planned but just present themselves to you. Graduate of JMLS Class of 1980.

Ron Ogorek, Title Services Manager First American Title, Warrenville, IL
L to R: Randy Hundley and Ron Ogorek
While attending a business convention in Las Vegas about 15 years ago and waiting in line for a cab, I suddenly realized former Cubs catcher Randy Hundley was standing alone behind me. He is regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his era (the late 1960s and early ‘70s), and played the majority of his career with the (now) World Champion Chicago Cubs. Hundley is also one of my wife’s all-time favorite players so of course I had to get her on the phone with him, even though it was quite late by
now back in Chicago. Hundley promised her that he would be sure I didn’t get in too much trouble while in Vegas without her. We eventually grabbed a cab together, and he shared numerous stories and anecdotes, particularly about Ernie Banks. The following year at the annual Cubs Convention, I formally introduced him to my wife, and he was again most gracious. For all you sports trivia enthusiasts out there, Randy’s son, Todd, also played with the (now) World Champion Chicago Cubs, in 2001-02.
Pat Weinstein, Illinois State Manager First American Title, Warrenville, IL In August of 1983, I attended the American Bar Association Annual meeting as a law student representative. The meeting was held in Atlanta, Georgia. I remember going to one of the sessions, and I must have arrived very early because the ballroom doors were still locked. As I stood there, an older man arrived and since we were both waiting, we started talking. The gentleman was very polite and asked me who I was, what state I came from and what law school I attended. I know he asked me about my background and I told him that I was married with two sons before I decided to go to law school and what a
challenge that was. He also asked what classes I enjoyed the most and I shared that with him. I know I was excited and talked so much, it was several minutes before I asked him his name. When he introduced himself, I was floored, because I had been babbling to Dean Rusk, former Secretary of State under John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. He told me what a pleasure it was to see more women attending law school and how much he enjoyed my enthusiasm. He wished me luck with my career just as the doors opened. It is a conversation I will never forget and to this day, I feel lucky I had the honor of meeting such a distinguished figure in American history.
Susan Graj, Field Manager First American Title, Lombard, IL A few years back, my brother invited me as his guest to fly to San Francisco to see Brian Boitano, the 1988 US Olympic Gold Medalist skate to music sung by Barry Manilow at the San Francisco Giants Stadium. After the skate, we were invited to an after party, which was very exciting. To my shock, I walked into a room filled with people I only saw on TV and to say I was star struck is an understatement. I was introduced to actress Judith Light, from One Life to Live and Who’s the Boss. From across the room, I saw my brother
talking to a woman who looked familiar and realized it was Peggy Fleming, the 1968 US Olympic Gold Medalist. It was surreal to be having normal conversations with these celebrities. As the evening progressed, everyone was waiting for Brian Boitano to make his appearance, as I stood there, he came right up to me and said “you must be Susan Wilczynski (my maiden name) sister of Michael Wilczynski, it is so nice to meet you”. It was at that moment I almost fainted, those types of moments are never forgotten and always I will always treasure them. Spring 2017 | PAGE 12
