By: Dr. Paul Baxley, Senior Minister At the close of our worship service last Sunday, January 29, our congrega"on voted overwhelmingly to authorize a comprehensive renova"on of our church facili"es. We do not know exactly when the work will begin, but we expect to be under renova"on by the end of the ďŹ rst quarter and we believe there will be work going on in dierent parts of our facility for the remainder of the calendar year. In the coming weeks, we will keep you updated as we receive more informa"on about the schedule and the adjustments we will all have to make in order for this renova"on of our space to be completed. Already I look forward to what our space will be like a-er the renova"on is over. I do believe that the changes and improvements we are making will make our facility even more of an asset as we live out our vision of being a thriving community in Christ where we all par"cipate in worship and are transformed by mission. In fact, the renova"ons will make our facility even more useful for our mission partners and community groups, even as the changes will enhance our congrega"on’s life. I am looking forward to us realizing all the poten"al of these changes and renova"ons, even as we know that God will show us ways of using these facili"es that we cannot imagine now, just as God always has in our past. The actual renova"on of our facili"es will require much from us. As we have already seen, it gives us an opportunity for generosity. To date, we have received more than a million dollars in gi-s to the Regenerate campaign, all but $145,000 coming during 2016. During the same year, we received more than a million dollars in contribu"ons to our ongoing ministries through our regular budget. In the last thirteen months, this congrega"on has given more than two million dollars in total, and that is the most generous giving we have ever seen. Gi-s that (Pastor’s Reflections, continued on page 2)
P - - F E FBC Children’s Ministry is planning a special event for the whole family. On Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. we invite families and friends to Pump It Up. This event is oered at no cost to you or any friends you invite. We do need a head count, so If you are able to a<end, please contact Minister of Children, Families and Outreach, Janet Cleland (Janet@ďŹ rstbap"stathens.org).

are made to Regenerate over the next several months will help us tremendously to reduce the amount of money we actually have to borrow to complete the renova"ons. So if you did not pledge, now is a wonderful "me to join this eort, and if you ďŹ nd you can give more than you pledged or at a faster pace than you originally thought, I encourage you to do so. As we give to the Regenerate campaign, we also need to con"nue to support our ongoing ministries. Some"mes congrega"ons experience declines in budget giving during the peak giving period of capital campaigns. To the extent it is possible, we need to avoid that tempta"on. In all these ways, the renova"on of our facili"es while we con"nue our mission and ministries will require generosity from us. But this season will also require agility from us. At dierent "mes in the next year, some spaces in our facility will not be available, and that will require that we all move around even as the work is ongoing. Over the last several years, as we have shared space with more and more mission partners and community groups, we have discovered that we have the capacity for agility. We will need to con"nue to ask God to help us become more and more agile. My ins"ncts tell me that being the church in the coming years will require agility from us long a-er our renova"on is complete. My ul"mate hope and prayer, though, is that the renova"on of our facility will be but a visible sign of a deeper and more las"ng renova"on in the life of our church. Just as our buildings are experiencing regenera"on, I pray that our church family will do so. Let’s invite new people into our life together and experience renewal by doing so. Let’s con"nue to serve our community in ways that extend God’s love, so that our community also experiences God’s renewal. Let’s look for new and profound ways that we can live out the vision we were given several years ago, of being a thriving community in Christ where we all par"cipate in worship and are all transformed by mission. A-er all, remember the words of Paul to the Corinthians: “When anyone is joined to Christ, there is a new crea"on. Old things pass away. All things are made new.â€? May this be a year of regenera"on!

Ever go on a long drive, 1-2 hours or more, and when you get to your des"na"on, you realize you can’t remember any of the details? You can’t even remember how you got there? It’s happened to me a lot, as my mind has wondered in and out of many an intellectual tunnel. Our brains and bodies knew how to get us there, but now we can’t recall or process any of it. Many of us ďŹ nd ourselves in a spiritual journey much like this, not being able to remember how we got where we are and not able to trace God’s ďŹ ngerprints on much of the trip at all. The real concerns of daily life, job stress, family obliga"ons, and poli"cal discourse have distracted us to the point that even those of us who regularly a<end worship can’t remember a sermon, song, or prayer from the past 6 weeks. We’ve lost our ability to PAY ATTENTION. Don’t believe me? Look over at the person in the car next to you—I bet 50% of them are on their phones. As we allow life to get in the way, inten"onal prac"ces, things that slow us down, are a MUST as we seek to recover our ability to NOTICE GOD in our lives. God is there, like the ‘Jesus is Lord’ shoe place outside of Spartanburg on I-85, but did you catch it? Over the course of the spring, our youth will work through a series on No cing God More, focused on a weekly exercise of reading scripture slowly and reec"ng on it in light of a weekly theme. Sunday evenings are focused on four movements of paying a<en"on: No"ce the Moment; No"ce God’s Word; No"ce God; No"ce the Week. Each movement calls us into a dierent way of focusing un"l we are listening to scripture and asking God to make us aware of God’s presence. Each week night, we have a daily guide that moves us through the same scripture for each night of the week, asking us to reect each day anew and see how God is seen in dierent ways in the same passage throughout the week. As our youth spend "me No"cing God, I encourage — I challenge you to take even 120 seconds/day, sit in quiet, and ask God to tell you something new. It’s hard. But in a world where we only reference things by the "me-stamp on our text message or ‘hours ago’ mark on the Instagram post, perhaps it’s a necessity that we step away and purposefully listen for God more. A word of cau on—be careful when listening to God. Some mes what God says is not easy to swallow.

WORSHIP NEWS T5 K C5 5 3 F — G R 3 B , M M Thank you for all the cards, emails, calls, hugs and con"nued thoughts and prayers for our family during the passing of my father, Charles Bri<ain. Dad had only been a member at FBC since May 2015 but he had made many friends and found community in the B&P Sunday School Class and the Seekers Senior Adult Group. I also know it was a great joy for him in the last season of his life to be a part of the church where his son and daughter-in-law were serving as music ministers. Part of Dad’s unique story was the 47 years he served in seven Bap"st churches and two Bap"st Associa"ons as a bivoca"onal music minister. He did this in addi"on to his full-"me job at Drexel Heritage Furnishings as Payroll Manager. Dad had no formal musical training but he was a natural musician with a deep sense of call from an early age to serve the local church through music. If it were not for individuals like Dad, most of our smaller, rural Bap"st churches would never have had much of a music and worship life. Wherever Dad went, he built choirs for all ages — purchasing music, folders, and robes, hiring pianists and organists, purchasing hymnals, purchasing handbells and choir chimes, purchasing new pianos and organs, and cas"ng a vision for the music ministry in a par"cular church. He was recognized in July 2005 upon his re"rement from ministry by the NC Bap"st State Conven"on Music and Worship Team for his years of service to the Bap"st church in NC. Dad’s funeral on Friday, January 6, 2017 was a living tes"mony to his years of service as many choir members from all those churches long ago gathered to sing together and remember a life that touched so many. During this "me of grief and loss, I am comforted by so many of the great old hymns that I grew up hearing and singing all my life as I observed my father. One in par"cular, about the Easter mystery of loss and renewal, death and resurrec"on, is played over and over in my mind. Wri<en by the ScoMsh Minister, George Matheson in 1882 during a "me of personal pain for Matheson, it harkens to the towering passage of Romans 8, where Paul writes that neither life nor death, nor anything in all of crea"on can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. O love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its ow may richer, fuller be. O light that followest all my way, I yield my ickering torch to thee; my heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine’s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be. O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain that morn shall tearless be. O cross that li est up my head, I dare not ask to y from thee; I lay in dust life’s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be. Amen and Amen.

G : B 3 P 3 , M Y 5 3 M Throughout January, groups around our church have explored how CBF Field Personnel are Bearing Witness to Jesus Christ around the US and the world. As the focus for our Oering for Global Missions month, we’ve learned how folks in Thailand have met Jesus through an ar"sts’ coopera"ve. We’ve learned how Jesus is shared in China as ďŹ eld personnel support and grow the church and educate pastors and leaders to meet needs. And we’ve learned how ďŹ eld personnel in Kentucky bear witness to Christ by suppor"ng families and people in crisis and by providing longterm opportuni"es to folks living in poverty. And over the past few weeks, we’ve been able to see and hear about the work of our own partners, Dianne & Shane McNary as they shared how Christ is being seen in the Samuel Project in Vazec, Slovakia. But how do our oerings to the Oering for Global Mission play a role? By giving to the OGM, we help support the LONG-TERM PRESENCE of ďŹ eld personnel—allowing them to pay rent, u"li"es, have insurance, etc. and be able to do the long, hard, slow
work of rela"onal building in their contexts. Having long-term personnel allows churches the chance to plug into ministry done the right way— through locals and through long-term presence rather than drop-in, one-o opportuni"es. In turn, ďŹ eld personnel and churches that support them are able to know that Christ con"nues to make all things new through him wherever two or more are gathered and working in Christ’s name. So as we come to the end of our emphasis on the Oering for Global Mission, please consider making your gi-.
