JUNE, 2015

Reflections Dr. Paul Baxley

By the time you receive this newsletter, I will have begun the sabbatical experience so graciously provided by the Personnel Committee, the Deacons, and the congregation. Words cannot convey how grateful I am for this opportunity. I want you to know that I will be using this time away in a variety of ways that I hope will enable me to return at the beginning of August not only renewed but with a new sense of focus, direction, and energy about our life together.   What will I be doing while I am on sabbatical? I will spend much of the time working on a writing project that has been on my mind for longer than I have been your pastor, though my first five years with you have given much deeper perspective to what I want to write. I will be reflecting pastorally and theologically on the many different ways Jesus’ parable of the sower (found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke) can shape our understanding of the mission of the church, our lives as disciples, and the work of ministers. I believe there is significance to the prominent place this parable holds in the Gospels and look forward to having the space and time to do the intense reading and writing required to explore these ideas further.   I asked a group of people who I respect highly to help me identify pastors with whom it would be helpful for me to talk. So in addition to the writing, I have scheduled a series of conversations with these pastors–all of whom have served congregations for long tenures really well. My sense of call is that my ministry among you all is still in an early stage, so I want to learn all I can from people who have served long pastoral tenures with excellence, energy, and the best kinds of agility. I expect I will learn much, not just about what these pastors do, but also about the kind of relationship they had with their congregations. After I return and have a chance to think about these conversations, I will certainly share what I learn with you.   Beyond that, I will be spending Sundays visiting some other congregations. Some will be very different from our own, but it will be beneficial to me to see firsthand what they do and learn from being in vastly different contexts. Others will be more like our congregations, but I will still benefit from the opportunity to see how they worship God and approach their lives together. Most Baptist pastors have very few opportunities to hear other pastors preach or see how other congregations worship until after retirement. I expect this opportunity will also be very helpful.   These three areas constitute the main emphases of the sabbatical. I believe each of them offers chances for deeper clarity and personal renewal in my own faith so that I can return better prepared to serve with you. Of course, our family also looks forward to simply spend time together and enjoy new experiences.   Yes, I am looking forward to this time away, and I am grateful for it. But I will also miss being with you all very much and will be eagerly looking forward to being back among you in August. I thank God for the privilege of serving as pastor of First Baptist Church, Athens!

Are We There Yet:

Stories of Journey and Unexpected Discovery

Small Group Bible Study Discussion for June and July

Our summer neighborhood Bible studies offer the opportunity for our adults to share in the hospitality of gathering in someone’s home and engaging in informal and meaningful conversation around the text of Holy Scripture.   Our theme this year is Are We There Yet: Stories of Journey and Unexpected Discovery. There will be four sessions offered.    Session 1: Is the GPS Working?: Joseph    Session 2: Lessons from the Trip: 40 Years in the Wilderness    Session 3: Should Have Turned Right: Jonah    Session 4: Inspired by Redirection: Saul on the Damascus Road How It Works • A host home serves as a meeting location for each of the four sessions. • The four sessions are scheduled during June and July. • Each location offers each of the four sessions. • A facilitator leads discussion at host homes. • Scheduled from 7:00-8:30 p.m. • Do not have to attend all sessions in order to participate. • Usually, some light refreshments or dessert is served as part of the meeting experience.   We encourage sign-ups so that the host homes know for how many to plan. These are designed with flexibility knowing that people travel throughout the summer. Each session is complete so if you miss one or two it will not exclude you from participating. Also, you are able to join with another group for a session if you were to miss one. 5 Points Area Host Home: Rick and Jill Dawson Address: 290 Lullwater Road, Athens 30606 Facilitator: Ray Austin First Session Is Tuesday, June 2, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Westside/Watkinsville Area Host Home: Fred and Amy Young Address: 1211 Founders Blvd., Athens 30606 First Session to Be Scheduled Week of June 21 Women’s Group Host Home: Teresa Granger Address: 274 Hunnicutt Drive, Athens 30606 Facilitator: Jennifer Baxley First Session Is Monday, June 8, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Young Adult Group Host Home: Emily O’Rear Address: 1440 Tanglebrook Drive, Athens 30606 Facilitators: Amanda Lewis and Frank Granger First Session Is Tuesday, June 9, 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Worship David Hull to Preach at First Baptist in June   On June 7, 14, and 21, we will welcome Dr. David Hull to the pulpit of First Baptist Church. Dr. Hull is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned both the Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry. Dr. Hull has served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Laurens, South Carolina, First Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, and most recently as pastor of First Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. He retired from that position almost a year ago when his wife Jane was called to be pastor of Union Christian Church in Watkinsville.

Now David serves as Interim Pastor of First Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, but will take a break from those responsibilities this month to be our pulpit guest. David also teaches at McAfee School of Theology and offers consulting services to congregations and their leaders through the Center for Healthy Churches. David has held a number of leadership positions in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and is highly respected among pastors and lay leaders alike.   Please be in worship during June as we welcome David Hull to our pulpit!

community Deacons Elect Committees to Oversee Next Steps in Master Plan Congregational Vote Set for June 14   On Sunday, May 3, the congregation affirmed the Master Plan developed by our Space Utilization Committee in collaboration with architects from CDH Partners. By the affirmative vote, the congregation authorized the formation of two committees to give leadership to the next steps in the process. The Church Council nominated a slate of candidates for those committees, and their recommendations were unanimously approved by the Deacons at their regular meeting May 18.   The first committee is a Master Planning Committee. It was authorized by the congregation to “work with CDH Partners to develop proposed Master Plan phasing, with detailed cost estimates, based upon ministry needs, appropriate progression of construction, and funding ability.” The persons affirmed by the Deacons to serve on this committee are: Doug Martin (Chair), Cindy Haygood, Andy Hogan, Bill Horton, Julie Jenkins, and Kevin Price.   The other committee is a Capital Funding Committee. It was authorized by the congregational vote to “design a capital campaign followed by a report and recommendations to the Deacons and congregation.” The persons endorsed by the Deacons for this committee are: Bill Hopper (Chair), Sallyanne Barrow, Steve Barton, Matt DuVall, and Helen Mills.   The congregation will have the opportunity to join the Deacons in the election of these persons in the church conference on June 14. Future newsletters will contain additional updates about the work of these committees.

Preparations Begin for Capital Campaign   Along with the nomination of members to serve on the Capital Funding Committee authorized by the church on May 3, the Deacons also received a report at their May 18 meeting regarding initial steps being taken to determine the feasibility of a capital campaign and ensure the best possible approach for a potential campaign in order to help fund recommendations made in the Master Plan.   Thanks to a generous gift from the First Baptist Foundation, First Baptist has been able to employee Ruben Swint to serve as a stewardship consultant during these critical months in our congregation’s life. Mr. Swint brings decades of experience assisting Baptist congregations on a variety of stewardship needs including normal stewardship efforts, capital funding strategies, and estate planning. Mr. Swint came highly recommended to us by a wide range of pastors and congregations who have relied on him for consultation at extremely important times in the lives of their congregations.   Mr. Swint will assist our Capital Funding Committee in making strategic decisions about how to organize a capital campaign, how much our congregation might conceivably raise, how to recommend the best leadership team for an eventual capital campaign, and then he would continue to serve as a consultant to the campaign leadership team, church staff, and lay leadership.   We are grateful to the First Baptist Foundation for their continuing generous support of the life and ministry of our church and their transforming investment in moving our vision implementation forward.

Called Church Conference

Sunday, June 14, 2015 – During Morning Worship   At the end of the worship service on Sunday, June 14, the congregation will be called into conference for the limited purpose of voting on two sets of nominations for positions of church leadership. The first item requiring congregational action will be the slate of committees and teams developed by the Nominating Committee and included in this church newsletter. Also, the Church Council and the Deacons will present a slate of persons to serve on the two committees created by the congregation when the Master Plan was affirmed on May 3. (See information above).

The FBC Foundation

By Helen Mills   Have you ever wondered how we paid to have the beautiful stain glass windows in the Branyon Foyer restored several years ago? What about how we paid off the considerable debt of the Hancock House that now serves as the Interfaith Hospitality Network Day Center? And how did you get a free copy of Always Becoming New by our own historian and member Dr. Ernie Hynds? You’ve recently heard that the FBC Foundation paid for the initial contract with CDH Partners for development of our campus Master Plan.   These, and many other funding activities, have all been possible because families and individuals established legacy funds through the First Baptist Church Athens Foundation. An idea that was established in 1974 and then became a charitable foundation in 1992 has grown to over $1.2M and has distributed funds throughout these years for a variety of needs and passions.   Many years ago, the Claude and Mildred Turner Family left their entire estate to the Foundation dedicated to making sure the kitchen and supporting fellowship around meals could be met. Never could they have imagined the service of Our Daily Bread (ODB), but without an industrial-rated kitchen and this support it would have been a harder call to God’s mission when ODB needed a new home. Just recently, Turner funds helped install a new industrial dishwasher, one that gets used routinely. The Aderhold family estate gift was the answer to how the Hancock House debt was paid.   Any number of families in our congregation has been helped through the Charles and Pearline Thomas Helping Hands Fund. Quietly distributed to help a family bridge a difficult financial challenge, this fund makes it possible to carry out Jesus’ calling us to love our neighbors as ourselves. And each year scholarships are given to our graduating youth because families established the funds to do so through the Foundation.   Two recent funds have been established. Claude and Charlotte Williams wanted to see that there would be funds for our pastoral staff to continue their development beyond what the church budget might support. Helen and Milton Mills wanted to honor Milton’s mother who was passionate about babies and children and thereby established a fund in her memory to help our church in the nursery and children’s area.   Expressing confidence in the continued work of the Master Plan and great discussion with the Board, The First Baptist Foundation approved devoting $40,000 toward the continuation of two processes involved in moving our Master Plan forward.   What are you and your family passionate about? As you think and pray about your walk with God and First Baptist Church, please consider what you would want to support well beyond your lifetime. Like families before you, your gift would be managed with stewardship and used in ways that only God can know. Please contact the church if you are interested in establishing a fund now or making the FBC Foundation as part of your estate plans.

Nominating Committee Report and Recommendations to Be Presented on June 14   This edition of our newsletter contains the annual report and recommendations from the Nominating Committee. The slate was approved by the Board of Deacons on May 18, 2015.   On Sunday, June 14, the church will be called into conference at the close of worship to vote on these recommendations.   Please review the report and come on June 14 prepared to act on them. Contact Al Henderson, Chair of the Nominating Committee, if you have questions.
