By: Dr. Paul Baxley, Senior Minister How will you par cipate? That was the ques on that came from the sermon I preached on First Sunday, August 23. But the ques on was not just for a single day. Between now and the end of September, I hope each of you will join me in praying fervently about this important ques on. A1er all, as followers of Jesus, we are all called to be ac ve par cipants in the life and ministry of Jesus. As a church family, we are fortunate to have so many different opportuni es for par cipa on in mission in our community, mission around the world, building Chris an community in and beyond our congrega on, and through worship leadership. As Chris ans, we are not called only to observe, admire and listen to Jesus. We are also called to par cipate ac vely in what Jesus is doing in the church and in the world. At our luncheon on First Sunday, we were all given the chance to begin to make commitments as to how we feel called to par cipate in the coming year. If you were not here, or if you were not present, there is certainly s ll me. The sign up sheets will be available outside Fellowship Hall for the next several weeks, and you can also commit online. Please make me to pray about how God is leading you to par cipate in this new year of mission and ministry just beginning! As we con nue to think about this cri cal ques on, our sermons in September will all come from the Epistle of James, a book of the Bible known for its strong emphasis on ac ve faith. James will challenge us to think about how we par cipate, not only through our ac ons, but even through our words, our desires and in our rela onships with others. I think you will find that our texts from James will help each of us answer Jesus’ call to par cipa on. (Pastor’s Reflections, continued on page 2)

As we move toward the end of September, we will be asked to commit to the proposed 2016 church budget. Far more than just being a funding plan for ins tu onal maintenance, our proposed 2016 budget gives us another way of par cipa ng in Christ’s mission in this church, in our community and around the world. Our financial par cipa on makes possible the feeding of hungry people, hospitality for people experiencing homelessness, and educa onal opportuni es for Roma people in Slovakia who, for too long, have been alienated from the whole world. Our financial par cipa on undergirds the work of schools that train ministers and organiza ons that draw churches together for shared mission and ministry. Our financial par cipa on provides preschoolers, elementary children, youth, and adults of all ages with ways of serving Christ and knowing him be@er. So you see: how will we par cipate is not just a ques on for a day. It is a ques on that will be with us throughout the coming weeks. All of us will have the faithful and prayerful opportunity to reflect on how Christ is calling us to follow him more faithfully and par cipate in his life more ac vely in and beyond the life of our church. I hope you will join me in praying earnestly and responding faithfully. One last note: during the month of August it has been wonderful to be back with you. The me of sabba cal was a wonderful gi1 and a me of renewal in every sense of the word. At another me I will share much more with the Deacons and the congrega on. But for now, know how thankful I am for the wonderful privilege of par cipa ng in the life of Christ with you! I am eager to see what God will do among us not only in the next several weeks, but in the years ahead!

Next Steps in Master Plan Implementa0on Following the church’s affirma on last May of the master plan for our facili es, the congrega on elected two special commi@ees tasked with coordina ng the next steps in the process. Both commi@ees have worked hard during the summer months, and the chairs of the Capital Funding and Master Planning commi@ees will offer detailed reports at the upcoming Congrega onal Gathering scheduled for the morning of September 20.

master plan. In order to develop a phasing plan with the best possible cost projec ons, the Deacons authorized the Master Planning Commi@ee to retain Van Winkle Construc on Company to provide detailed cost projec on for all aspects of the master plan and assist in developing the phasing plan that best meets the needs of our congrega on. Once the Master Planning Commi@ee provides a phasing proposal for considera on by the Deacons and the congrega on, a variety of discussion opportuni es will be offered to ensure that the congrega on has the opportunity to discuss the proposal. If the congrega on approves a phasing plan, then a recommenda on will be brought regarding a possible capital campaign. No final commitments on any construc on or financing will be made un l a1er a capital campaign can be conducted and the results reported.

The Capital Funding Commi@ee has been working with Ruben Swint, our capital consultant, who spent the early summer months engaged in a feasibility assessment of our congrega on’s giving capacity. Mr. Swint’s ini al report communicates his belief that our congrega on would be capable of pledging $3-$5 million in a five year capital campaign. Now the commi@ee is working on iden fying possible leaders and developing a strategy for such a campaign, which could happen no sooner than early 2016. Bill Hopper, Chair of the Capital Funding Commi@ee will offer more details September 20.

Should you have ques ons about this process, please a@end the Congrega onal Gathering on September 20 at 9:15 a.m., or contact Bill Hopper, Doug Mar n, Robin O’Rear or Paul Baxley.

COMMUNITY NEWS A I L

By: Frank Granger, Minister of Chris an Community

One of our study op ons on Wednesday evening this fall is a book discussion focused on Rachael Held Evan’s book, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding Church. She says she is o1en asked to speak to church leaders about why young adults, millennials, are leaving church. She does not claim to speak for everyone nor does she pretend to have all the answers to the ques on. Instead she shares answers that come from her own story as one who grew up in church, le1 church, and is finding church again. She also shares from the many other voices of young adult that have shared their personal stories with her. In her introduc on, she writes what she said to one group of youth workers about why millennials were leaving the church: “I told them we’re red of the culture wars, red of Chris anity ge ng entangled with party poli cs and power. Millennials want to be known by what we’re for, I said, not just what we’re against. We don’t want to choose between science and religion or between our intellectual integrity and our faith. Instead, we long for our churches to be safe places to doubt, to ask ques ons, and to tell the truth even when it’s uncomfortable. We want to talk about the tough stuff – biblical interpreta on, religious pluralism, sexuality, racial reconcilia on, and social jus ce – but without predetermined conclusions or simplis c answers. We want to bring our whole selves through the church doors, without leaving our hearts and minds behind, without wearing a mask.” This is the kind of honesty and insight with which Rachel Held Evans writes and speaks. It is refreshing and unse@ling at the same me. Her statements point to issues that are much beyond the past typical a@empts to regain and retain young adults by changing forms and styles of doing church. Evans brings this summary to a pointed conclusion by saying: “Millennials aren’t looking for a hipper Chris anity, I said. We’re looking for a truer Chris anity, a more authen c Chris anity. Like every genera on before ours and every genera on a,er, we’re looking for Jesus – the same Jesus who can be found in the strange places he’s always been found: in bread, in wine, in bap sm, in the Word, in suffering, in community, and among the least of these.” The story she tells is organized along the seven tradi onal prac ces of the church: bap sm, confession, holy orders, communion, confirma on, anoin ng of the sick, and marriage. These are the ways by which the church tells us we are beloved, broken, and commissioned; the way in which the church feeds us, welcomes us, anoints us, and unites us. That is her claim, and her story. I invite you to read her book. I invite you to join me on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and share in discussion about her book.
