Welcome to Labatte Simmentals 42nd Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale, Friday, March 4th, 2022 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw, Sask on north side of #1 highway. We would like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from our past sales. Many of our buyers are not just our customers but have become our good friends. Many of our commercial customers run great operations and we as purebred operations need to listen and learn from them. We’re still in the Covid 19 era, will it ever end? Hopefully soon! We’re so lucky to be in agriculture, live where we do, in the wide open spaces, doing what we normally do every day. Cattle prices remain strong as those big Simmental steers are bringing lots of dollars. A good friend of mine sold his steers the first week of January, they averaged in weight 850lbs-1000lbs and brought $2.00/lb to $2.015/lb. That’s making money. We welcome again our guest consignor East Poplar Simmentals, Kyron & Kelsey Manske. This young couple are doing a great job with their program. They’re focused on raising the right kind of cattle for both the commercial and purebred breeder. We’re so lucky in the Simmental breed to have these young producers that are moving the Simmental breed forward and making them even better. Kyron & Kelsey will be offering 18 of their top red & black bulls in this year’s sale. Our offering again will consist of Red, Black and Fullblood Bulls and ten top quality Red & Black open heifers. Our red pen is the strongest it’s ever been with top groups of bulls sired by WLB Top Tier 456G, a calving ease bull with performance and eye appeal, SVS Betts 808F, performance filled with meat and muscle and again some strong WLB Encore calves. The blacks led by sons of the $150,000 R Plus Yuma 9087G bull are smooth made and performance minded. Also, the first calf crop of our high selling black baldy bull from our 2020 Bull Sale, IPU Black Cinch 95G. They are mostly blaze faced and full of performance. A new feature this year in the black division are two excellent half-blood bulls sired by SAV Rainfall. The fullbloods, dark red & goggle eyed, all diluter free and some polled are sired by the outstanding bulls Black Gold Elevation 20E, Anchor D Outlook & Sunny Valley Canon. We think a very strong group. Again, we invite you to our 2022 Annual Bull & Female Sale. Our 42nd edition, on Friday, March 4th at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK. The sale will be a live auction sale and also carried on the INTERNET THROUGH DLMS (Mark Shologan at 780-699-5082) The bulls will be available for viewing on Wednesday, Thursday and sale day Friday at Johnstone Auction Mart. Enjoy your retirement, it is well deserved. Also retiring are Wilf Davis & Marnie Somers. Wilf has done my pictures for over 20 years. Wilf and Marnie have done my ads for years and Marnie has done our website. They will be greatly missed, but there comes a time when it’s time to slow down. I’ve known Wilf since I started in the Purebred Simmental business, he’s been my mentor, advisor etc. But most importantly he’s been one of my very best friends, a friendship I cherish very much. We’ll still do our weekly calls and visits. Wilf & Marnie, enjoy the less stressful years ahead and all the best to you in health and happiness.

Health

All bulls will be scrotal measured and palpated. Bulls over 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested. Bulls under 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested prior to delivery. Weights will be posted sale day. All bulls and heifers were given Cattlemaster 4, Somnustar PH and Fortress 7 in June and boostered with same in September. All were treated with Ivomec Pour-on in September and January.

Delivery

At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will take the purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, bulls will be delivered at a reasonable charge. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.

US Delivery

For our U.S. buyers that live in the Dakota’s and Montana, we offer free delivery to central points and if possible right to your yard. For bulls going to other destinations we will work with you making arrangements. We look after and pay for all paperwork crossing the border and do offer a sight unseen purchase program.

HOMO POLLED We’re starting this year’s catalogue with an outstanding son of IPU Pocahontus 2Y. This Scream calf has been a standout from birth. He’s dark cherry red, has a huge top and butt, lots of testicles, deep ribbed and a herd bull presence. He had a nice low birth weight of 86lbs, a gestation of 279 days and an actual weaning weight of 970lbs. He has it all, impeccable pedigree, meat and muscle, colour, size, all in a dark red package. HOMO POLLED This is the first one of the SVS Betts 808F sons catalogued. We believe our Betts sire group is one of the best set of red bulls we’ve ever offered. They ’re so uniform in type, huge muscled, deep, great hair and testicles and style to burn. This smooth made son is mothered by an own daughter of the great Pocahontas 68M cow. Our Pocahontas cow families are highlighted by IPU Pocahontas 105H, IPU Pocahontas 68M and IPU Pocahontas 2Y, all going back to the great Hart Red Chief bull. This Betts son is very smooth made, nice fronted and attractive, long, big nutted and has good size. He started off at 90lbs and weaned at 930lbs. HOMO POLLED Our first of the WLB TOP TIER 456G sons. We couldn’t be more happy with the Top Tier progeny, from calving ease to very saleable bulls and heifers. We partnered with Circle 7 Ranch & Bohrson Marketing and purchased this great red baldy bull as the high seller out of the WLB program in 2020. To date we haven’t touched a Top Tier calf at calving. All born unassisted, lots of vigor and get up and go. 56J started at just 72lbs and has grown into a great haired, long, smooth herd bull. He could definitely be used in the heifer pen or the cow herd.

HOMO POLLED One of our favorites again.This stylish Betts son is full of meat and muscle. He has a great haircoat, super thick and deep, has a little white on his head to sire some of those baldy calves that are so in demand. His mother is one of our favorites also, we purchased her out of the Sim Power sale from the great people from Westway Farms. She has a great udder and is a producer. Her first calf, a bull, sold in our 2020 sale to Leewood Ranches, AB for $18,500, her second calf, a red Bentley daughter, sold to W2 Farms, SK in last year’s sale as an open heifer for $8,500 and is in their transplant program and this year we have this super Betts son. He’s the real deal, herd bull in the making.

The mother of this really good bull knows how to proLot 9 - 76J duce. Her first calf, a heifer sold at our 2019 Simmsational sale, where she was the high seller of the sale to Mader Ranches, Wilson Stock Farm and Bohrson Marketing for $28,000. Her next calf, a bull, sold through this sale in 2020 to Doug Krepps, SK as one of the high selling bulls and last year her bull calf sold to the Stolsons at Hodgeville, SK, one of the premier commercial operations in southern Saskatchewan. 76J would sire some great steer calves and replacement heifers. They would be the right kind.

HOMO POLLED A meat machine is what 78J is. You’ve got to stand behind him to appreciate the top, meat and muscle he has. He’s been one of our favorites since day one. You don’t see many bulls with the quarter he has. A full brother sold in last year’s sale, also a blaze face to the Stolsons at Hodgeville for $12,500. Betts and Brooklyn really click. We have a good Red Deputy daughter off 77D in our herd who weaned off a great Betts heifer calf this fall. Mr. Beef is named appropriately as he is a true beef machine. We plan on drawing semen on him and using him in our program. He is a definite sale feature.

HOMO POLLED Another really good Betts bull going back to the Temptress Clair 12R cow family. 85J’s mother is a black El Tigre cow out of Clair 12R. She is a big powerful cow, easy fleshing and eye appealing. 85J is really dark red, great hair coat, lots of quarter and rib shape. Betts calves have that look to them, they’re very nice fronted and eye appealing. This guy would sire an outstanding set of replacement heifers and some whopper bull calves or exceptional feeder calves.

POLLED FLECKVIEH - NON DILUTER This many generations Fleck bull is very interesting. He’s a Simmental bull with the Polled Hereford look, feather neck and all. If I had a commercial Hereford herd this bull would be high on my list. What a group of heifer replacements he would sire and the demand for those heifer calves would be off the chart. I remember seeing, forty years ago, at Double RN Ranch a set of half blood Hereford-Simmental cows that to this day might be the best and most consistent commercial cows I’ve ever seen. Something new to our sale is selling a couple of black ½ blood bulls. We thought we’d start by just breeding 4 or 5 heifers and see how it would work. Wow! Did it ever with these two bulls. The SAV Rainfall bull was recommended to us to use on heifers. We saw Rainfall progeny at the great SAV sale, where there were many really good sons in the sale. In fact the high seller that year was a Rainfall son selling for over $400,000. The 31J bull is homo polled and hetro black and was mothered by an excellent black Lieutenant daughter going back to the Temptress Clair 12R cow family. He’s deep, long, stylish with a very nice head and excellent quartered. The 32J bull is homo polled and homo black and goes back to our D Bar C Black Satin cow family. He had excellent performance and has a great set of EPD’s. Both of these bulls are quite similar in type, big topped, big quartered, lots of capacity and style. If I were buying black bulls this spring these are two I would look at seriously, I might just sweep the ring.

HOMO POLLED - HOMO BLACK A really stylish young baldy calf that was raised by a black baldy Bentley daughter who was a full sister to IPU Bentley 81F. She was the pick of our 2019 born heifer calves, we bred her to Cowboy Cut and she had twin baldy bull calves born unassisted. 155J who she raised and 156J who a Holstein raised along with two other calves. We had unfortunate bad luck with the two year old 44G heifer, due to an injury had to sell her this past fall. This calf is super clean fronted, very attractive and has an excellent pedigree.I wouldn’t be scared to use this bull in the heifer pen, yes he’s a twin with a 78lb birthweight, but he is so smooth shouldered, nice headed, long necked. I wouldn’t be scared to take a chance on him.

She was one of our topped ranked cows and we’re really happy to get her. The same day her bull calf at her side was the top selling black bull calf, a real performance bull. Another year and another bull sale we are excited about! As always, thank you to Barry and Brenda for having us as the guest consignor. 2021 was a year of challenges, especially with the drought throughout Western Canada. It has really shown the resiliency of the Canadian Cattleman and their ability to adapt even in a disaster. Many hard decisions were made this year for a lot of operations, but ultimately cattlemen and ranchers will persevere, and this drought will end. We were fortunate to have a received a bit of rain and managed to get enough feed for the winter put up. Looking to the future things look very positive for the industry and many are predicting record prices this fall. The highlight of the year for us was welcoming our second daughter, Eva, in September. It has been fun watching Embrie become a big sister and she is a great help. We are excited to be raising our kids in the cattle industry and love sharing our passion with them. This year’s offering is one that we are proud to bring to town. We’ve got another great set of SVS Betts and IPU Lieutenant bulls leading off our red pen. If you’ve talked to me about the red bulls you’ve probably heard me brag about how much I like both the Betts and Lieutenant cattle. Both bulls we have used for a few years now and have females in the herd milking that look great. Our black offering is a bit smaller this year due to a lot of heifer calves being born in the black herd, but I feel the quality is more important than the quantity we bring to town. We are also offering a couple of half blood bulls again this year that are real powerhouses. Something new this year is our fullblood offering. We’ve had a handful of fullblood cows her for awhile now that usually get bred black or red to give us some baldies, but we felt it was time to raise a fullblood and he’s quite an interesting individual and double polled as a bonus. All the bulls are on our herd health program and will be semen tested and guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, but we do ask that any bulls that come back to our place for wintering are insured. Most of the bulls in our offering have been homo polled and homo black tested. Due to covid delays at the lab we won’t have those results for catalogue print, but we will share those on our website and Facebook when they are complete. Visitors are always welcome, and the bulls are available to be viewed on the farm at any time or give us a call to discuss any of our offering. Here is a bull who will be pushing the scale down hard on sale day. You have to admire this Betts son for his length of body and big square hip. He is the nice dark cherry red that we are all trying to produce. He is out of a real nice Miller cow who always has a calf at the top end of the pen. His dam, IPU 204E, is really starting to make a name for herself in our herd and is one of my favorite red cows on the farm. She is a dark red, moderate cow with a beautiful udder. A full brother was one of our high sellers in last year’s sale selling to the Zerie’s at Horizon.

This dark red baldie is a real well balanced and long bodied individual. He’s deep quartered, big hipped and carries that depth through his middle third. A real smooth made calving ease type of bull that ties it all together nicely. You have to appreciate how he lays his shoulder in nicely, with added neck extension and a small skull shape. I would say that this guy would likely work on the right set of heifers with just an 88 lb birthweight. We have used his sire Pride on heifers successfully for a few years now and he calves quite well and moderates birthweight even on big powerful type cows.

This bull is a chunk! Muscle expression and shape from every angle is how I would best describe this guy and is exactly what I had in mind when with a Betts x 56U mating. IPU 75D is a black cow that has been a consistent producer for us and has a very nice udder. This is our second set of Betts bulls we will sell and we can’t say enough good things about them. We really appreciate the consistency of the Betts progeny and 103J is a perfect example of just that. Here is an embryo calf off of our 38B cow who has put a few brothers through this sale. We have successfully flushed her a few different ways and no matter how she is bred she adds huge depth of body, spring of rib, muscle expression and great docility. This guy is going to add that depth and extra pounds to his calves.

In the spring of 2020 I was touring through the Brooking Angus bull pen and was extremely impressed with the group of SAV Renovation bulls, so impressed that before I left I decided I would be using him to breed a handful of cows to that year. This bull is exactly what I had in mind when I made that decision and he is the typical Renovation, with the added maternal value that his 56U sired dam brings. Starting at just a modest 72lbs he packed on the pounds early and didn’t stop. The amount of muscle expression and power this guy brings to the table, but at the same time staying fluid in his movement is really impressive. If you are looking for a halfblood bull to add power, maternal value, and maintain calving ease this is your bull.

HOMO POLLED A beautiful dark red WLB Encore daughter with a perfect white blaze down the middle of her attractive head. She is a twin to 37J and they are almost identical. Their mother was shown in 4-H and has turned into an excellent cow. Her first calf an Approval son, was also a baldy and sold through our bull sale to City View Simmentals, they’re using him in their heifer pen. Her second calf was a WLB Encore daughter who was one of our top two red heifer picks in our 2020 heifer crop. She was retained in our herd and has a beautiful Potent heifer calf on her this year. And then she had these two baldy Encore beauties in 2021.

HOMO POLLED These two Encore twin daughters are like peas in a pod, so close to being identical. This heifer has the same dark red colour with a beautiful blaze like her sister. Their mother has a splash of white on her head also. This WLB Encore mating with a Springcreek Spark Plug daughter has really worked. If you’re interested in one of these two heifers 37J or 38J you might just sweep the ring and take them both.

Kelly and I purchased 108J’s dam as a heifer calf for a lot of money in Windy Hills online sale where he offered 4 full sisters out of the 422B cow – 3 reds and 1 black.
