RA i NBOW R ED A NG u S - Cherhill, Alberta
Rainbow Red Angus is a fourth generation farming operation located northwest of Edmonton, in Cherhill, Alberta. Owned and operated by Dave, Rhonda, Brooke and Bryce Bablitz, along with Kolby Heaven, the farm is home to 60 purebred angus and 140 commercial sim/angus mother cows. The Bablitz family farm was first established in 1926 by Dave’s great grandfather, Peter Bablitz, and since that point each generation of the family has been part of the original farm. There have always been commercial cows around the Bablitz family and Rainbow JN Land and Cattle, owned by Norm and Sandy Bablitz (Dave’s parents) is as well known as any in the area. It wasn’t until 1999 and the announcement of the Blue Spruce reduction sale that the idea of owning purebred cattle was brought forward. Dave and Rhonda purchased 9 females at that sale, and those cows became an integral part of what is now Rainbow Red Angus. 10 more Blue Spruce heifers were added the following spring via private treaty and the base of the cowherd was established.
Over the next several years, select females were added through the Summer Sizzler, Hayshaker and Red Roundup sales. From the guidance of breeders such as Dave Lathwell, and the Wildman family the first bull purchase was made in the spring of 2000. That bull Red Towaw Indeed 22K, a son of the immortal Red Towaw Indeed 104H, laid the groundwork for producing functional, productive females and is still used by AI in the program today. Other bulls that have make big impacts include Red U2 Big League 7136T, from U2 Ranch, 2013 Reserve National Champion bull; Red T-K Recoil 72Y, from T bar K, and Red Cockburn Heavy Duty 518C, from Cockburn Red Angus. The first bulls were marketed in the spring of 2001 through an invitation to participate in the well-respected Towaw Cattle Co. bull sale. That relationship has continued to this day and has since transpired into the Joint Venture bull sale, held at Towaw on the third Saturday in March. It is through this sale that the Bablitz family has be able to sell bulls to some of the premier purebred and commercial breeders throughout North America. Rainbow Red Angus annually markets 20 yearling bulls in this sale, along with 40 extra age 2 year olds from Towaw Cattle Co. Red Roundup has always been an important part of the success of Rainbow Red Angus. One of the most important cows to ever grace the pastures north of Cherhill, was a Roundup purchase in 2006 from Sabastian Stewart. That cow, Red Stewart Lark 602S, went on to produce national champions in the US and Canada, donor females, and herd bulls. To date the average sale of her daughter is in excess of $20,000. She is also the dam to one of the Rainbow Red Angus consignments to the 2021 edition of Roundup. The Bablitz’s feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to sell in this great sale, as it has directly affected their ability to market the cattle they produce and have had several high sellers over the years, including the 2020 co-high selling heifer calf. Dave, Rhonda and the rest of the family are honoured to receive this award and would like to thank the CRAPS board, the First Class Marketing team and the consignors for making the Red Roundup event a sale that has truly impacted the Red Angus breed and the entire cattle industry in such a positive way.
