Another final, another defeat and Team India’s record in the knockouts at ICC events now reads 8-0 since 2013. While the final result may not reflect it, India was beaten comprehensively by Australia in the WTC final by 209 runs

As T20 game has moved the focus from defence to aggression, and cricketers are now more assured of their attacking game, most experts believe it will be better for Indian batsmen to usher in a new batting.

Another final, another defeat and Team India’s record in the knockouts at ICC events now reads 8-0 since 2013. While the final result may not reflect it, India was beaten comprehensively by Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final by 209 runs. At no point in the match was India ahead of the Aussies, clearly highlighting the vast difference in the approach of the two teams. It’s happened plenty of times in the past decade that the star-studded Indian line-up comes apart at crucial moments – and fritters away the hard work done over a period of time.

NATION WANTS TO KNOW...

Questions are mounting which need answers from the Indian camp. But for those to be answered there needs to be a clear understanding of what the problem areas really are. Terrible team selection has been a constant irritation with Indian cricket over the past few years. During the 2021 WTC final, India picked both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin when the conditions warranted the need for another fast bowler. This time, it was the other way round as Ashwin was dropped to accommodate an extra pacer – but that at a time when he is the number 1 ranked bowler in the ICC rankings. Clearly, the Indian team management, earlier during Kohli’s captaincy and now under Rohit, is misreading conditions and not selecting their best team combination.

When the weather is overcast, anyone can tell you that the conditions are conducive to fast bowling. But India’s knowledgeable think tank needs to remember that ultimately a team needs to pick its best

WHAT INDIA NEEDS...

For the moment, there are more questions than answers confronting BCCI and Team India. More than anything else, what India needs urgently is a mindset change and the courage to ring in major, even drastic, change. As the old saying goes, ‘Fortune favours the brave’ but whether the BCCI and Team India are ready to take crucial decisions is the key question for a brighter future.

REASON FOR INDIA’S FAILURES

Another reason for India’s failures is that Indian batsmen

have been struggling under pressure in such knockout matches. Barring the 2016, T20 World Cup semi-final that India lost to West Indies where India smashed a total of 192, the batters have fared poorly in crunch situations. It’s high time for Indian batsmen to take a leaf out of the English team’s

style of play and adapt to ‘Bazzball’ cricket. As the T20 game has moved the focus from defence to aggression, and cricketers are now more assured of their attacking game, most experts believe it will be better for Indian batsmen to usher in a new era of batting with their aggressive style of play in all formats of the game - including in Test cricket.

TALK ABOUT TRANSITION MUST

After the defeat in the WTC final, talk about transition for the next cycle is inevitable. With several players in the side on the wrong side of 30, the team sure needs to take some tough selection calls. After the WTC defeat in 2021, a similar chatter had begun but the only major player dropped was Wriddhiman Saha. So, the big question is whether the aging war horses will now make way for new and fresh players like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Umran Malik and Arshdeep

Singh? And will they get a fair chance to showcase their talents and will they be given a long rope to hone their skills?

LESSON TO BE LEARNT

The other big lesson that needs to be imbibed is that BCCI and selectors need to focus not so much on ‘individuals’ but on building an entire team. Despite the money and the glamour surrounding the Big Names, it’s a valid question that some experts have raised as to when will Team India start putting focus on the team and not on a few individuals? This was also recently pointed out by Gautam Gambhir in an interview where he blamed the media and the fans saying that our nation is obsessed with individuals rather than a collective effort which has become a big reason for India’s lack of success at big events. If this tendency is not rectified on priority, we may end up with more of the same goof ups and failures!

UPCOMING ODI WORLD CUP

But before the next WTC cycle, we have the upcoming ODI World Cup that India will be hosting in October-November this year. Can India triumph on home soil? Does Team India have the will and firepower to combat England, Australia and New Zealand who all play an aggressive and fearless brand of cricket?

The cyclone has now weakened into a ‘severe’ storm and turned into a depression on Friday evening. It is now on its way to Rajasthan and the weather office has warned of heavy rain in the state too. Govt removes compulsion on regularisation of land

The State government has removed compulsion on regularisation of land in excess of ownership in the cities. Now any amount of extra land can be regulated.

The Urban Development and Housing and the Local Self Government departments on July 4, 2022 issued orders in this regard.

The regularisation

will be up to additional 300 sqm in excess of ownership and can be done at the level of the concerned body. Additional land of more than 300 sqm will also be regulated. The regularisation can be done after approval from the state

government.

Till now regularisation of surplus land was possible only up to the prescribed size. The 10% of the original plot or 300 sqm, whichever was less, the additional land up to that size could be regulated.

The NWR has also received Rs 646 crore from goods transportation till the month of May.

For the last four consecutive years, the record of earning is in the name of NWR in all the railway zones, said Capt (retd) Shashi Kiran, CPRO, NWR. It is not that the NWR only focuses on its income, the railway seems committed to providing better facilities to the passengers for safe and punctual travel, said Shashi Kiran.

The rainfall started in Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer, Jodhpur, and nearby areas today. The department has sounded a “red” alert for Jalore and Barmer. More than 200 mm rainfall may occur in the areas where the alert has been sounded.

“Advanced preparations were made in view of the alert of the heavy rainfall due to deep depression. All district collectors were directed to ensure that there is no casualty. Work was done as per the flood management plan,” the official said. Jodhpur collector has given instructions to keep educational institutions, gyms, and tourist places closed till June 17.

A man, who was picked up by Pratap Nagar Thana Police, in connection with a vehicle theft case, died under suspicious circumstances on Thursday late night.

Police informed that the deceased, identified as Nirdesh Soni, a resident of Kho Nagoriyan on Agra Road, was arrested by police on Wednesday.

“The accused was be-

ing questioned on Thursday, during which he fell ill. He was taken to RUHS and later referred to SMS Hospital as his health condition deteriorated. However, Nirdesh Soni dies during treatment,” a police official said.

“A judicial inquiry has been ordered after the custodial death of the accused at the police station. The post-mortem was held under the supervision of the magistrate and now an investigation has been started. Action will also be taken against negligent officers,” an official added.

Student fails in NEET, dies by suicide in Kota

Another student has committed suicide in Kota after failing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The 21-year-old victim, Roshan came from Samastipur in Bihar to study and lived on rent in Kota’s Mahavir Nagar area. Recently, he had appeared for the NEET exam but failed. On Thursday morning, he re-

turned to Kota from Delhi where his uncle stayed and committed suicide.

An FIR has been filed in the Boranada Police Station by the former MLA. Police informed the complainant in its complaint stated that the officers and employees of Sahara India made him invest the money on the pretext of good returns.

“Singh invested `23.15 lakh in the company on the pretext of good returns. But, the victim did not get any returns or his money back. The former MLA repeatedly demanded money from the accused, and filed an FIR when he did not get the money back,” police said.

The Rajasthan government has issued a clarification for giving relief in lease amount. As per the clarification, lease amount will be taken according to allotment rate or 110 percent or reserved rate, whichever less, in the cases of plots in colonies settled on government lands, compensation against acquisition etc.

A notification in this regard was issued on January 18 for cases in which the allotment was done

before this date. It will also be applicable in the cases where the lease amount has not been deposited before this date.

The government has also given relief in lease amount in land use cases.

The calculation of the lease amount will be done as per the rate of allotment. UDH-LSG issued an order in this regard.

According to this, 2.5 percent more lease amount will have to be given if lump sum lease amount is deposit. Lease amount of two years will have to be given for getting free hold patta.

‘ONE LAND ONE PATTA’ RULE TO BE FOLLOWED

“One Land One Patta” rule will now be strictly implemented in the state. CM Ashok Gehlot had expressed displeasure over land related fraud and incidents of multiple sale of the same plot fraudulently during a meeting at PHQ recently. Today, Principal Secretary Home took a meeting of the monitoring committee and directed officials to ensure that the registry of one plot is not done repeatedly by the same person. He asked the officers to update software for this.

govt figure, 15.67 lakh livestock got infected due to lumpy disease and the govt had accepted the death of only 76030 cattle. Rathore said that the govt should pay attention to the memorandum given by Sarpanch Sangh which says that 5.13 lakh cattle died due to the lumpy disease.

MINING THE SEABED POSES ECOLOGICAL RISKS

One of the ocean’s potentially most valuable resources hasn’t been tapped yet – but that could be about to change.

Scattered across large zones of the ocean floor, manganese nodules – lumps that look like cobblestones – contain rich deposits of nickel, copper, cobalt and other metals that are newly in demand for manufacturing batteries and renewable energy components.

“A fierce debate is now playing out as a Canadian company makes plans to launch the first commercial deep sea mining operation in the Pacific Ocean,”

Indiana University scholars Scott Shackelford, Christiana Ochoa, David Bosco and Kerry Krutilla warned.

Less than 10% of the deep seabed has been mapped thoroughly, and most life forms discovered there have never been seen before.

Collecting materials from the ocean floor could harm these species – for example, by burying them in sediments.

“We believe it would be wise to better understand this existing, fragile ecosystem better before rushing to mine it,” the authors concluded.

AND HARD TO DETECT

Illegal fishing – taking too many fish, or harvesting threatened species – causes economic losses estimated at US$10 billion to $25 billion annually. It also has been linked to human rights violations, such as forced labor and human trafficking. But it’s easy to conduct these activities out of sight on the high seas.

By looking at when and where fishing boats turned off their location transponders at sea, academic and nongovernment researchers showed that these silences can be an important signal.

“Vessels frequently went dark on the

high-seas edge of exclusive economic zone boundaries, which can obscure illegal fishing in unauthorized locations,” wrote Heather Welch, a researcher in ecosystem dynamics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Ships may also disable their transponders to avoid pirates or avoid drawing competitors to rich fishing sites, so making it illegal to turn their signals off isn’t a practical strategy. But more analysis of where boats go dark could help governments target inspections and patrols, reducing crimes at sea.

Humans rely on the ocean for many things, including food, jobs, recreation and stabilization of Earth’s climate. But although ocean resources may seem infinite, human impacts like pollution, overfishing and climate change are creating what United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called an “ocean emergency.” Climate change is pushing ocean temperatures to record levels, many fisheries are overharvested, and plastic waste is accumulating in the deep sea.

These five articles from The Conversation’s archive spotlight urgent challenges for ocean conservation, and describe what researchers are doing to devise effective responses.

A DEVASTATING INVASION IS EXPANDING

Invasive lionfish are aggressive predators, native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, that feed on smaller reef fish. They have caused heavy damage in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico since they first appeared in the Atlantic in 1985. Now, they’ve spread south to Brazil, which has many rare endemic fish species and is behind the curve in responding.

“As one of many Brazilian scientists who warned repeatedly about a potential lionfish invasion over the past decade, I’m disheartened that my country missed the window to take

early action,” wrote Charles Darwin University marine scientist Osmar J. Luiz. “Now, however, marine researchers and local communities are stepping up.” One important control strategy was to create an interactive dashboard where anyone can report lionfish sightings. Other steps are likely to include environmental education, organized culls and genetic research to identify distinct lionfish populations and see where they’re moving. With a similar lionfish invasion underway in the Mediterranean, there’s urgent need for effective responses.

SCIENTISTS ARE DESIGNING AN ‘INTERNET OF THE OCEAN’

Just as there are unnumbered life forms in the ocean yet to be discovered, there also are many unanswered questions about its physical processes. For example, scientists know that the ocean pulls carbon from the atmosphere and transfers it to deep waters, where it can remain stored for long periods. But they don’t know how biological and chemical shifts affect this carbon cycling process.

Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts are designing a monitoring system called the Ocean Vital Signs Network that could make it possible to test strategies for storing more carbon in the ocean and tracking how well they work. They envision “a large network of moorings and sensors that provides 4D eyes on the oceans – the fourth dimension being time – that are always on, always connected to monitor these carbon cycling processes and ocean health,” wrote WHOI director Peter de

Menocal, a marine geologist and paleoclimatologist. The network would include intelligent gliders and autonomous vehicles that could collect data and then dock, repower and upload it. It also would use sensors

and acoustic transceivers to monitor dark, hidden reaches of the ocean where carbon is stored. “This network makes observation possible for making decisions that will affect future generations,” de Menocal wrote.
