Mumbai: State Tribal Development Minister

Vijaykumar Gavit on Friday admitted in the Legislative Council that a tribal girl who died in September 2022 worked as a bonded labourer, drawing criticism from Opposition members.

The practice of bonded labour is banned in the state.

As he replied to a question related to “Ashram Shalas” run for tribal children, Gavit was also asked to respond on the death of a 10-year-old tribal girl from Nashik district

The girl, who belonged to the tribal community, had been taken to work in the Ahmednagar district. But her employers--a family based in Parner tehsil--dumped her outside her parents’ home when she was quite unwell. The minor, who had injury marks on her body, died during treatment later.

Case against AIMIM MP Jaleel, others for candle march protest

Aurangabad (PTI): A case was registered on Friday against Aurangabad Lok Sabha MP Imtiaz Jaleel and more than 1,500 persons in connection with a protest against the renaming of the Marathwada city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a police official said.

The All India Majlise-Ittehadul Muslimeen MP led a candle march from the collectorate to Jubilee Park here on Thursday night and addressed the protesters. The candle march was taken out despite permission being denied to head of the “anti renaming committee” Ayyub Jahagirdar, the official said.
