UK approves Design Phase in Hamburg
BY KRISTI WILLETT
Aplan to begin the design phase for the construction of an outpatient medical facility on land recently approved to be acquired in the Hamburg area was approved Thursday by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Health Care Committee.
UK HealthCare identified a location in the Hamburg area of Lexington to expand its facilities last year and the UK Board of Trustees approved the acquisitions of a total of 41 acres at its June 17, 2022, and Feb. 17, 2023, meetings.
The area in and around Hamburg – specifically, the 40509 zip code – has the largest concentration of UK employees in the county. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the region.”
—UK President Eli Capilouto
“A key strategic imperative for our university and our academic health system is to take care of our people. The area in and around Hamburg – specifically, the 40509 zip code – has the largest concentration of UK employees in the county. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the region,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “Our mission is to advance Kentucky in everything that we do and a healthier state where more people have greater access to quality patient care, closer to their home is a critical part of that mission.”
The $30 million approved for the project will initiate the design phase that will include detailed programming services, schematic design through construction documentation phases and budget estimates for all phases with projected timelines. The new outpatient medical facility will be the first phase of a potential multi-phased project at this new campus. Additional Board approval will be required to initiate the construction phase.
In addition to this approval, the Board endorsed plans to continue to establish new smaller ambulatory sites, specifically to serve UK’s families closer to their homes as well as to address critical needs for medically underserved populations in Fayette County.
UK HealthCare currently offers outpatient services at several other medical facilities across Lexington, including Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s pediatric clinics, the Good Samaritan Professional Arts Center, UK HealthCare-Turfland, the Lexington Surgery Center, Kentucky Clinic South, Polk-Dalton Clinic, the UK HealthCare offices at Fountain Court, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.

Blue Grass Airport Opens Nursing Suite
Blue Grass Airport has opened a Mothers’ Nursing Suite as a new amenity in the airport terminal. Dedicated exclusively to nursing mothers, this suite provides a comfortable space for breastfeeding or pumping mothers while traveling with their families.
Conveniently located post-security in the Concourse B gate areas, this new suite includes two small rooms—one private space with a locked door and a larger room that includes a microwave, deep sink, full-length mirror, diaper changing station, wellplaced electrical outlets and space for luggage. Both rooms include comfortable gliding and rocking chairs, and the aesthetics, lighting and décor in the suite are soothing and soft to provide a calm setting.
“The addition of this suite will provide a great experience for nursing mothers flying to/from Lexington,” said Eric Frankl, president & CEO of Blue Grass Airport. “We realize that it can be challenging for mothers when they travel, and we hope this new facility will ease that process and provide them with a comfortable and private location.

Summer Heat Advisories
Lexington’s Division of Emergency Management is reminding the public that: “About 40 children a year die from heatstroke, either because they were left or became trapped in a car. That’s about one child every ten days killed in a hot car. As of May 2023, four children have died due to being forgotten in parked cars.”
Heatstroke Facts
The majority of hot car deaths — 53% — happen because someone forgets a child in a car. You may be asking yourself: How does this happen? Families who lost a loved one thought the same thing at one point, but then the tragedy happened to them. Hot car deaths don’t just occur in the summer heat. On average, the first vehicular heatstroke of the year happens in March, according to Jan Null, who has been tracking such deaths since 1998. Among the trends he discovered over the years:
• About 46% of the time when a child was forgotten, the caregiver meant to drop the child off at a daycare or preschool.
• Thursdays and Fridays — the end of the workweek — have had the highest deaths.
• More than half of the deaths (54%) are children under 2 years old.
Check The Back Seat
Parents and caregivers, get in the habit of always checking the back seat of the car before locking the doors. Remember: Check the Back Seat.
• Place a briefcase, purse, or cell phone next to the child’s car seat so that you’ll always check the back seat before leaving the car.
• Keep a stuffed animal or another toy in your child’s car seat when it’s empty. Move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.
• Set a rule for your childcare provider; have them call you if your child doesn’t arrive as scheduled. Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
