L - LOT / G - GARAGE
For those arriving by car, there are more than 1,000 spots available in nearby parking garages, surface lots and on city streets within a five-minute walk to the FirstOntario PAC. Metered parking on the streets surrounding the venue is available at a rate of $1.50 per hour, with a three-hour max limit, between 9am to 6pm. After 6pm during the week and all day on Saturday and Sunday downtown meter parking, garages and nearby municipal surface lots are free of charge. The exception being when a special event parking flat fee of $5 cash at municipal surface lots and parking garages is in effect when large events are happening at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and/or Meridian Centre. Special event parking is cash only and is paid upon arrival at the entrance of the parking garage or municipal surface lot. We highly recommend arriving up to an hour before show time to ensure time to park. Visit StCatharines.ca/Parking for a complete list of parking locations. Due to proximity and accessibility, we recommend the multi-tiered covered Garden Park / Carlisle Street Garage across from the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. The public entrance for vehicles is off of the street Garden Park. It is conveniently within a two-minute walk and has 595 spaces and 26 accessible spaces. The garage features accessible parking on every level, but the third level is also free of curbs, providing easy access to elevators that takes you to street level on Carlisle Street. Accessible curbed ramp drop-off points are available in front of the Box Office entrance at 250 St. Paul Street as well as along Carlisle Street by the front doors closest to Partridge Hall.

A Letter From Manteca TO ST. CATHARINES What do you mean St. Catherines has two “a’s” in it? It’s spelled with an “a”. Where? After the “h”. You mean St. Catharines? Yeah. Oh, crap. What’s the matter? Well I have 175 T-shirts that say St. Catherines.
SPONSORED BY
It was 1993, before spell check and every city we were playing on the tour was written on the back of the T-shirt. There was only one city that was not spelled correctly, and it wasn’t Knew Yorke Sity. I’m sorry St. Catharines. But I think we have been forgiven – Manteca and St. Cath(a)rines have developed a very tight bond over the past 40 years that we have been touring. We have had some of our most magical shows in your city and while we’d like to take all the credit, actually it’s because you guys are a wonderful audience and the people who have invited us to play your city have been the most welcoming, most gracious, most supportive of what we do anywhere in the world. We’re coming back Nov. 6 with a brand-new show, one that we test drove in front of 6,000 screaming, out of control people this summer at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. St. Catharines we’re so excited about playing for you again. Do. Not. Miss. This. Show. I promise you we’re going to raise the roof. - Matt Zimbel Manteca

Husband-and-wife duo Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet sing in close harmonies, interweaving lead vocals and duelling guitars. It’s enough to make other couples in the audience enviable.
Though Doucet often shoots down the notion, like when he told Vice Media’s Noisey, “People will say to us ‘wow it’s really amazing to watch how intimate you guys are on stage.’ And I’m thinking ‘what are you talking about? We were just singing songs. Yeah we stood beside each other, but I was thinking about the chords and about what I had for dinner.”
resulted in something unique and modern. It has also made them critical darlings in Canada and abroad.
Their four full-length albums, from 2011’s eponymous debut to breakout hit The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss, 2015’s Leave No Bridge Unburned, and 2017’s Panther in the Dollhouse, each has built on the last, artistically and commercially. And despite earning their first Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year and a nomination for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, they weren’t able to stay out of the studio for long.
The wealth of sounds coming from just two performers jumping from instrument to instrument is a spectacle in itself. All the while strutting their signature calling cards of unparalleled guitar playing, song-writing excellence, pitch-perfect harmonies and intense chemistry.
The duo continues to release a wealth of material including a Christmas album as well as two EP’s, entitled The Northern South Vol. 1 + 2, on which they rework six early rock 'n' roll and blues classics. Tunes such as Chuck Berry’s “Nadine” and Little Walter’s “My Babe” are given a new soul. For listeners, these covers sometimes seem unrecognizable from the original unless they’re attuned to the lyrics. Like many great musicians before them, Doucet and McClelland knew any worthwhile cover song brings something new, maintaining the essence of the original while making it your own.
When experienced professional musicians form a partnership, sometimes the result is greater than the sum of its parts, but often times, especially with so-called “supergroups,” it can be much less.
Throughout their recorded work, Whitehorse have progressed from the stripped down folk of their self-titled debut to bigger, bolder and more expansive sounds.
Since McClelland and Doucet formed Whitehorse, after each experienced success as a solo artist (they met when Doucet produced one of McClelland’s albums), their blend of old-school rock 'n' roll, folk, country, surf and blues has
But through it all, McClelland and Doucet’s voices and intimate performance style remain the heart of Whitehorse.
OK, so much for the romantic notions, but the fact remains they’re a hell of a live band.

Two households‌ This is dance, this is theatre, this is a jazz concert. This is Shakespeare’s tale of love and violence re-imagined, re-visited, re-loved hyper-realized, sampled, questioned recognizable but twisted, current and classic, gritty and glorious. Passion, pheromones, pick-up lines, I want you I need you I love you These violent delights have violent ends.

A story of love & violence, revisited Juliet & Romeo is a contemporary take on Shakepeare’s classic story of starcrossed lovers from a female perspective. First published more than 400 years ago, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks' artistic director Kimberley Cooper says the tragic story still resonates with audiences today because of its powerful themes and timeless story. “It’s a great story,” she said, adding that all these years later, it’s one that people keep coming back to. “It’s been adapted and revisited many times, but I was interested in exploring it from Juliet’s perspective.” This original dance piece was created 2016 and had its premiere in 2017. Cooper said she had always wanted to work with story ballet, and she’d been toying with the idea for a while. She’d also been wanting to work with dancer and actor Cory Bowles, known to many for his role as Cory in Trailer Park Boys.
…a lucid, smart and sassy contemporary commentary on Shakespeare’s classic tale.” - Edmonton Journal Bowles and Cooper had worked together in the past and Cooper had been looking for an opportunity to create something together. In 2016, the timing just seemed right. “In that original version, (Bowles) adapted it from the original text and served as the
narrator, now we have one of the dancers as the narrator; Natasha Korney, and I think it works really well,” said Cooper. The story is set in contemporary times and the only original text is Mercutio’s long speech about Queen Mab of the fairies. “We didn’t want to change a word of it, it’s just so powerful as it is,” Cooper said. As for the rest, there’s a mix of spoken word, slam poetry and even some rap. The goal was to tell the story in a new and different way and have audiences connect with the material on a new level. Based off audience reactions, Cooper said she feels like they were able to accomplish that – and more. “People think it’s about love, but it’s about violence as much as it’s about love. Maybe even more so,” said Cooper. “It’s interesting how the play is still relevant now and how we are still talking about its themes years later… I hope this will resonate with people in a different way.” Sometimes dance, she said, can be elusive for people and by giving them an easy point of entry — telling a story that they’re so familiar with — she’s hoping more people will find it easier to come and take in a dance performance. “It’s been great for me, too; it’s an interesting way to approach storytelling for my work and I find it an interesting way to open doors for another avenue of inspiration,” Cooper said.
Toronto-based percussionist Nick Fraser composed the original live music for the production, offering up a complicated, groovy and challenging soundtrack featuring a quartet of drums, bass, violin and trombone. Cooper said it was very inspiring to create dance to match Fraser's score.
…entrancing, exciting, and best of all, steamily on message… - The Calgary Herald “There’s something about the way the trombone and violin come together; it’s sometimes haunting and eerie, but beautiful,” she said. The end result is a production with twists and turns that reimagines and revisits a beloved, passionate and tragic tale. - Melinda Cheevers NiagaraThisWeek.com PARTRIDGE HALL REGULAR: $55 MEMBER: $45 COLLEGE/UNI/CHILD: $25 Thurs 14 Nov 7:30pm Purchase two tickets and a $75 spa gift certificate for just $130!

DAN MANGAN PROVES HE’S HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL For about 15 years, Dan Mangan has been one of Canada’s most consistent and adored singer-songwriters. But as he extended his mid-30s with a wife and two kids, he faced a realization that is familiar to many commercially successful songwriters at that stage in life. It’s the realization that they aren’t the young, hyped artist on the scene anymore. It’s then that they see how much of a connection they have made with their fans: Are they going to keep coming along for the ride? Is the music good enough to have longevity? Longevity, after all, can be the most difficult thing for an artist to achieve. Thankfully, Mangan’s latest album, More or Less, puts any doubt to rest. “It’s such a gift that my audience isn’t tied to a ‘scene.’ Seeing 12-year-olds and senior citizens alike at the merch table gives me hope that maybe I can continue to do this for some time yet,” the Juno-winner tells CentreStage from a tour stop in Europe. “There are a lot of folks who tell me that [2009 album] Nice, Nice, Very Nice was huge for them in college, which leads me to think that there’s definitely a core of 30-somethings that are continuing to support me as we age together. What’s also nice is that I can see people get excited to hear new songs from More or Less as well as the old songs, which is affirming.” More or Less comes at an interesting point in Mangan’s creative and critical trajectory. Nice, Nice, Very Nice, his second album, helped solidify a dedicated fanbase and put him on critics’ radar as a fresh and interesting voice. But it was 2011’s Oh Fortune, that expanded his sound beyond voice and acoustic guitar to include more orchestration, bringing him to the masses. That album garnered rave reviews and earned Mangan two Juno Awards, plus a Polaris Prize nomination. But instead of returning quickly with more folkrock anthems, Mangan waited four years to release his next record, and 2015’s Club Meds diverged significantly from his prior work, introducing a darker and more experimental sound. “Oh Fortune had to hold up to Nice, Nice, Very Nice, and it ended up attracting even more attention. Club Meds got less reception, but I personally think it was my best album to date,” Mangan says. “It was a bit more challenging, and darker, but I think the musicality and lyrics were more mature and nuanced. As for More or Less, I think it’s a bit of a culmination of all my albums - it’s got a little bit of my entire body of work in it. Maybe the best of all worlds? One thing I feel strongly about is that More or Less is a warm album. It feels invitational. It’s soft and tender in a way, and perhaps Club Meds was a bit more cold or calculated.” The new album, he says, is definitely a reflection of where he is in life. Having kids will change anybody’s life in innumerable ways, and if you’re a songwriter it’s impossible for it to not be reflected in your work. “I think More or Less debates two significant questions: ‘Who am I now?’; and ‘What are we going to do?’ Mangan reveals. “They’re quite linked, but I think my angst for
the world is intrinsically tied to my angst as a father.” As for what awaits fans coming to his show in November, his concerts now draw on material from all his albums. “With five albums now, it’s hard to play everything we want to play, and hard to make sure we play all the old favourites that people are hoping to hear,” he says. “Most gigs, I leave a few songs up for request in the moment from the audience. And the band is cooking these days!” - Michael Raine CanadianMusician.com PARTRIDGE HALL REGULAR: $45 MEMBER: $35 COLLEGE/UNI: $25 Wed 20 Nov 7:30pm

the legendary
Downchild Blues Band “Legendary” and “iconic” are terms that may be over-used, but in the case of the Downchild Blues Band, they are the only terms that will suffice. There are many fine blues artists in this country, but none has been able to step up and share the special pedestal Canadians have reserved for the band that has been at the top of its game for 50 years. Brothers Donnie and Richard “Hock” Walsh created the band in 1967 and they have become an inspiration to blues artists here and abroad. They were the motivation for the Blues Brothers, created by fellow Canadian Dan Akroyd and the late John Belushi. And it was Donnie’s continuing relationship with Akroyd that led to a 2010 documentary on the band entitled Flip, Flop, and Fly, 40 Years of the Downchild Blues Band.
22
While Hock passed away in 1999, Donnie continues to lead the band and has been hailed as a trailblazer for every Canadian blues artist who has followed. The band continues to record and perform, with 23 albums to their name. Their awards are far too numerous to mention, their legions of followers have never waned and their anniversary tour is not to be missed. A synopsis on the documentary declares, “Through their musical legacy, Downchild has had a huge impact on Canadian and American culture. 40 years, nearlt two dozen albums, countless live performances and awards later, Downchild remains the top live blues band in Canada selling out concerts throughout the country. And they influenced a whole new generation of young musicians including Jeff Healey, Colin James, and more who continue the blues tradition in Canada.”
Donnie Walsh told CentreStage he was pleased with the documentary and it was an accurate account of their history. The current lineup has been together for over 20 years. In addition to writer, singer, harmonica player and lead guitarist Walsh, the band includes singer and harmonica player Chuck Jackson, bassist Gary Kendall, keyboardist Michael Fonfara, sax player Pat Carey and drummer Mike Fitzpatrick. All are talented, widely respected musicians with enough individual awards to rival the band. But Walsh maintains it was simply hard work that forged the place in Canadian blues reserved for Downchild. “I just kept going at it for so many years,” he said modestly. “We had a hit record right away” he recounted, “and so we were pretty much touring Canada right away.”
"There would be no Blues Brothers if it weren’t for Downchild" - Dan Aykroyd Their breakthrough record was a cover of the Big Joe Turner song “Flip, Flop and Fly.” Walsh recalled how the early days saw 80 different members rotate through the lineup. “Most of those changes happened early on because we needed to make things bigger and better,” he said, adding “the changes were necessary because it was tougher in the '60s. There were a few blues artists to draw from and virtually no blues bands in Canada back then.” If further proof of the band’s and Donnie Walsh’s stature is needed, he can proudly point to two successive Niagara Falls
Blues Festivals where Walsh was asked to perform with surviving members of the most famous blues band in history – The Muddy Waters Band. “It was very cool playing with those guys. We have a long history there. I’ve been playing in New York for a long time at a couple of great clubs and the relationship with those fans has continued through the years,” Walsh explained. Response from the festival's crowds made it clear that Walsh is an enduring favourite. It was quite an honour for him and made a clear statement about his place in the international blues history. The Downchild Blues Band will be touring Canada this year and Walsh is looking forward to returning to the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on November 21. - Bob Liddycoat CanalBankShuffle.com Bringing the finest in blues from around the world to Thorold (17-20 October)

They are lovable, Canadianadriven iconoclasts with quirky, yet intelligent songs that continue to engage audiences.” - THE RECORD As one of Canada’s most original musical collectives, Rheostatics have always occupied a unique place in the Canadian musical landscape, producing a hybrid wholly shaped by the individual influences and diverse musical tastes of its members. Such disparate predilections could make it challenging for a band recording its first album of original material together in 15 years, but according to guitarist Dave Bidini, the musicians exacting the greatest influence on Rheostatics members these days has changed. “I think really we’re really more influenced now by each other rather than outside influences and forces,” Bidini said, in reference to the band’s 2019 release, Here Come The Wolves. “You bring your influences in when you first start playing together as a band. Now there’s a lot more of each other reflected in the compositions. We’re more on the same page then we’ve ever been. You get older and your demands get less trenchant. Your ego is less fragile and tender. You learn to work toward the whole a little bit more. That’s where we’re at now. It’s easy for us to see ourselves as a strong unified collective.” As united as Rheostatics are musically on their new album, the 12 tracks on Here Come The Wolves are not exactly harmonically homogenous. In fact, fans will be happy to know that the songs on the new album reflect all the quirky diversity found on Rheostatics classics such as Melville and Whale Music. The title track, for example, takes three very distinct musical threads and weaves them into a tightly knit sonic tapestry that somehow
manages to showcase the individual influences of each band member.
MELVILLE (1991)
It’s a gear-shifting suite of guitar riffs and vocal volleying that delivers exactly what you hope for in a Rheostatics song: originality.
The rheos most iconic album. Created with a proudly Canadian aesthetic Featured “Record Body Count” and an almost nine minute cover of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
Given its subject matter, its blasts of discordant fury, and its length, you’re not likely to find Here Come The Wolves in heavy rotation on pop music radio stations. No worry. Rheostatics have never relied on radio to attract fans and success for the band’s new album will be defined in other ways, according to Bidini. “We want people to hear it, that’s for sure. We want people to see themselves in it and we want people to understand the world a little better because of it. We also want to remind people of what we do and the way we do it, and take away that four, five or six people who are different in many ways have come together to make something they can all enjoy.” How will that translate live, and what does that mean for fans headed to FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre to see Rheostatics November 27? “We’ll be playing a lot of the new record,” Bidini said. “You’ll see a collection of really committed musicians and voices. I just hope we don’t suck at the end of the day. That’s all you can hope for really.”
WHALE MUSIC (1992) Considered an integral part of Canadian Rock n Roll history. “It is a timeless album that should be in any music collection. it is also a lot of fun. It also contains two masterful new words - Californication and Gincognito – Darrin Cappe

AN EVENING OF COMEDY WITH
Elvira Kurt PARTRIDGE HALL REGULAR: $35 MEMBER: $30 COLLEGE/UNI: $25 Thurs 5 Dec 7:30pm MATURE CONTENT

With more than three decades in the comedy industry under her belt, Elvira Kurt knows better than most that there are trends and shifts in comedy. Sometimes it’s a big trend that ripples through the industry, other times the shift is almost imperceptible. Those subtle shifts, Kurt says, can be harder to predict, and for some, harder to recognize. But after 30 years, she’s learned to just trust her intuition when it comes to the audience. “It’s sort of like childrearing in that way. Your kid starts going through a phase and just as you get used to it, just as you start to recognize it and adjust to it, they’ve moved on to a new one,” she said. With comedy, there have been many phases over her career and in order to make it in the industry, Kurt has learned to adjust, and in the process, she’s thrived. In addition to regular appearances at comedy clubs across the country, the Second City alumna has also made many appearances in the Just For Laughs Festival, hosted her own game show Spin Off, a talk show PopCultured with Elvira Kurt, and is a frequent guest on CBC Radio shows The Debaters and Q. In addition to her standup, she’s worked as a writer for Canadian TV shows such as MasterChef Canada, The Great Canadian Baking Show and Baroness Von Sketch Show. When it comes to standup though, no two performances are the same for Kurt. She’ll head into a show with a roughly plotted out set, but if something’s not landing with an audience, she’ll shift gears and change things up. “You have to be able to recalibrate on your feet,” she said. “You need to always be engaged.” A perennial performer in St. Catharines, Kurt has appeared both on her own and as part of a large ensemble during the popular Girls Nite Out shows. She has also hosted two HOT TICKET Season Launch nights at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and absolutely killed it both nights with fresh improvised material. “I don’t know what it is with my love affair with the city,” she said. “I will say though, that I think it’s a mutual love affair. Whenever I come, an audience always shows up and they’re always so amazing.”
Unlike her Girls Nite Out appearances, where she has to eventually relinquish the stage to her co-performers, Kurt said when she comes through the city this time, she’ll get the crowd to herself for the whole night and she’s looking forward to it. “I’ll get to flex my comedy muscles and really spread my wings, as they say,” she said, noting she always gets a good audience in the Garden City. “They’re so willing to go anywhere I want to go; the audiences come in with an expectation to be entertained. There’s a certain sense of adventure when performing in a theatre space that’s different than when you’re performing in a comedy club. It becomes this wonderful dance and everything ends up being fair game,” she said.
“STORYTELLING STUDDED WITH A SERIES OF UNEXPECTED RAZOR SHARP BARBS.” - TORONTO STAR
“HER HEALTHY DOSES OF HUMOR DRAW ROARS FROM THE CROWD,” - LOS ANGELES TIMES
Are there things she won’t joke about? Sure. But it’s not because she can’t, rather it’s something she feels she can’t do justice. “There’s this idea out there that there are things comedians can’t say, the idea that ‘you can’t joke about this anymore’ and that’s not necessarily true,” she said. “You just have to work harder. No topic is off limits, but if I do it, it better be funny. If people are pushing back, it’s because you’re not working hard enough; you’re not making it funny... It’s never funny to punch down, that’s just lazy.” Now, more than ever, audiences are able to let comedians know — almost instantaneously — what they think of their material. While some comedians may find that hard to navigate, Kurt finds it invigorating. “You can explore lots of topics, hotbutton political and cultural topics, and if you’re funny enough or clever enough, the audience will go there with you, but if you’re not, then you’ll know when it doesn’t hit,” she said. And while she’s the first to admit she knows what she’s doing on stage, Kurt said she’s always striving to get better. “I don’t think it’s something I can ever master,” she said. “Every night is a new mystery to unravel.” - Melinda Cheevers NiagaraThisWeek.com

STRAY CAT LEE ROCKER COMING TO ROCK THIS TOWN The lasting influence of Memphis, Tennessee’s Sun Records on the landscape of American music is still evident today. The music of Sun artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis continues to inspire new generations of fans who love the purity and simplicity of the rockabilly records that defined the Sun sound. Such was the case in 1979 when bassist Lee Rocker teamed up with guitarist/ vocalist Brian Setzer and drummer Slim Jim Phantom to form yhe Stray Cats, ushering in a chart-rocking rockabilly revival that swept the globe. “We knew the band was connecting,” said Rocker, who was 17 when Stray Cats signed its first record contract. “We felt it when we played and knew it worked. One night there would be 20 people, then 40 the next, then 100. We just didn’t know where it was going to go from there.” As unlikely as it seems, the Stray Cats initially gained notoriety by performing in clubs like CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City— which were known more for hosting seminal punk and new wave artists like Talking Heads, Blondie and The Ramones— before heading off to Britain to provide the soundtrack for a revitalized 1950s-style Teddy Boy youth subculture. To their credit, Rocker and his bandmates managed to fuse the Sun sound with a rockabilly fashion sensibility and punk attitude to create a hybrid all their own. Together, the Grammy-nominated Stray Cats sold nearly 10 million albums, generating 23 gold-and-platinum-certified records worldwide on the strength of hits like “Rock This Town,” “(She’s) Sexy and 17,” and “Stray Cat Strut.” Earlier this year, the Stray Cats released their aptly
named studio album, 40, to commemorate their 40th anniversary. Their first album in over 25 years. As a solo artist, Rocker has continued to enjoy an active career, recording and performing with the likes of Carl Perkins, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Willie Nelson and John Fogerty. In 2013, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player magazine, acknowledging the impact of his genredefining, bass-slapping style. Most recently, he’s penned and recorded the song “Dog House Shuffle,” a tribute to the instrument that has fuelled his career. “It’s a song about the upright bass, also known as the dog house bass,” Rocker said. “I’ve been doing this for 40 years and that bass has taken me around the world many times. I started to think about the bass players of the past, heroes like Willie Dixon and Bill Black, the original bass player with Elvis. I wrote it as a tribute to the instrument I play and the players who came before me.” For his upcoming show at FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on December 7, Rocker and bandmates will be delivering a high-energy set of Stray Cats classics and rockabilly standards from the likes of Carl Perkins, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys and Johnny Burnette, with some other recognizable rock 'n' roll era favourites for good measure. It’s the perfect night out for music fans who appreciate a blast of Sun on a cold December night in St. Catharines. “It’s really a concert of cherry-picked songs from throughout my career, from Stray Cats
to Lee Rocker solo records, but also songs picked for specific reasons. Every song in the concert I have a deep connection to. But it’s more than just a concert. We’ve got videos and photos, and I get to tell the stories of the songs and of being on the road to tie it all together. It’s a concert, but there’s definitely a whole other thing to it.” - David DeRocco GoBeWeekly.com

2% JAZZ, 98% FUNKY STUFF Funk. The word wasn’t used in polite society until Wilson’s Pickett’s hit cover version of “Funky Broadway” brought it into the mainstream in 1967. And although we know it when we hear it, its precise nature is hard to define. In his authoritative Dictionary of American Pop/Rock, musicologist Arnold Shaw expounds that “In Negro slang, ‘funk’ is an odor produced during sexual excitement. The adjective, ‘funky,’ is used with reference to blues, jazz, or rock of a sensual character.” Musicians as different as pop icons George Clinton and Rick James, on the one hand, and jazz musicians Horace Silver and Art Blakey, on the other, have been described as funky. There was even a wave of southwestern funk in the 1970s that included the likes of Leon Russell, Steve Miller and Kinky Friedman (“play that funky music, white boy!”). But if funk is hard to define, there is little doubt that saxophonist Maceo Parker embodies its essence.
1960s, then boarded the mothership as a formative member of George Clinton’s pioneering Parliament and Funkadelic bands in the 1970s. More recently he toured and recorded extensively with Prince, who referred to him as “The Teacher.” He has also worked with artists as diverse as Keith Richards, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of funk in one golden thread. For several years, Parker was the linchpin of Brown’s famous show. The singer would shout “Maceo, I want you to blow,” and, Brown says, Parker “was magic — anything I threw at him he came through on.” Since beginning his solo career in the 1990s, the indefatigable Parker has released 11 solo albums and toured throughout the world. There is no question that he and his band will, to quote Brown’s famous tune, “Make It Funky” and rock the house. Now, look that up in your Funk & Wagnell’s!
Playing alto, tenor and baritone saxes, his staccato stabs, inventive riffs, wailing blasts and clipped accents deftly weave jazz, soul and pop to define much of funk’s “sensual character.” Like Atlantic honker King Curtis (along with Ray Charles, a major musical influence), Parker’s full-bodied horn sound could, as they say, peel paint off a wall. The North Carolina native’s impressive discography reads like a who’s-who of funk. He played with James Brown, Soul Brother No.1, on many of his big hits of the

- The List
10 acrobats take us on a stirring journey of what it means to be human, and of how our bodies, our connections and our aspirations all form part of who we are. Exploring the physical limits of their bodies, performers reflect on how much we can take as humans. How much weight can we carry? Who can we trust to support our load? This team of exceptional performers will lead us to reflect on the burdens we carry and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them.

ENSEMBLE MADE IN CANADA'S
PROJECT A country-sized initiative with an aim to celebrate the diversity and richness of Canada through the eyes and ears of its people. Join us for a very special concert event by Ensemble Made In Canada that showcases a newly commissioned suite of piano quartets, each inspired by a particular region of Canada, as part of a national concert tour that spans coast to coast.
The Mosaïque Project consists of three components:
1
A newly commissioned suite of piano quartets by 14 Canadian composers, each inspired by a particular region of Canada. Each composer wrote a piano quartet of up to 4 minutes inspired by a particular province, territory or region, to create a 60-minute musical suite. Ensemble Made in Canada chose composers from various musical genres (classical, jazz, singer-songwriter, electronic, and First Nations traditions) to create a unique musical quilt that represents multiple layers of our multi-faceted society and artistic culture. A diverse lot, the 14 composers involved include East Coast indie rocker Julie Doiron, Hamilton-born jazz pianist David Braid, poetic lyricist and virtuosic piano-playing cabaret songwriter Sarah Slean to name a few.
2
A national concert tour by Ensemble Made in Canada throughout July 2018-January 2020 that will include stops in every province and territory The quartet (Pianist Angela Park, violinist Elissa Lee, violist Sharon Wei and cellist Rachel Mercer) has more than 30 stops confirmed on their tour and will include performances at Nunavut’s St Jude’s Igloo Cathedral, Hopewell Rocks New Brunswick and Toronto’s Union Station Great Hall.
A specially designed website that showcases audience-generated visual artwork inspired by the musical commission. What will you be inspired to create? At each concert, guests are invited to participate in a creative visual representation inspired by the musical experience. As the tour progresses, the Visual Mosaïque has been growing in complexity, diversity and beauty. It acts as a dynamic visual representation of the tour and of the country, connecting music, art, and communities across Canada. Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole
46
The voice of Hawaii’s new generation! A riveting performer, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole (Kao-mahkah-EE-vah Kah-nah-kah-OH-ley) creates some of the most original work to emerge in contemporary Hawaiian music, drawing from ancestral memory and hula practice as chant transforms to melody. Kaumakaiwa seamlessly melds Hawaiian culture and modern sensibilities in deeply powerful music. A vibrant keeper of culture, an authentic innovator, and fun, as she engages indigenous thought to address today’s issues through music, chant, and sharing of spirit. With plenty of humor, she provides wry commentary and stories to give context to her songs. Award-winning musician and producer Shawn Pimental accompanies on guitar and backup vocals. THE RECITAL HALL ALL TICKETS: $30 COLLEGE/UNI/CHILD: $25 Fri 7 Feb 7:30pm
I had the good fortune to experience Kaumakaiwa in Brisbane with a group of presenters from across Canada last February. From the moment the music leaves this performer’s body, you can feel it deep in your soul. I remember sending our Programming Supervisor Annie Wilson a video of their performance in the middle of the night exclaiming that we had to book this artist. I felt like I was taken into the past and thrust into the future simultaneously. The opportunity arose to bring them in as part of our Celebration of Nations featured programming and we jumped at it. Kaumakaiwa has some of the most original work to emerge in contemporary Hawaiian music, drawing from ancestral memory and hula practice. I hope you will join us for this not-to-be-missed experience." - Sara Palmieri, Programming and Marketing Manager FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre

Africville Stories
with JOE SEALY, JACKIE RICHARDSON & PAUL NOVOTNY Pianist, composer, producer, and broadcaster Joe Sealy has toured with the pioneering fusion group Blood Sweat and Tears and performed with such jazz giants as Joe Williams and Milt Jackson. In addition to being president of Triplet Records Inc., he has hosted his own weekly radio show, “Joe Sealy’s Duets,” on Jazz FM 91 for five years. Sealy’s long-time musical partner, bassist Paul Novotny, has worked with vocalists Jackie Richardson, Holly Cole, Carol Welsman, and Molly Johnson. In addition to composing for radio and television, Novotny has performed with Cedar Walton, Junior Mance, Don Thompson, and others. Together, the prolific duo has released four CD’s, garnered two Juno nominations (Dual Vision, Blue Jade), and shared the stage with such jazz notables as Michel Petruciani, Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden, Red Mitchell, and Herb Ellis. Novotny also acted as producer for Sealy’s 1996 Juno Award-winning album Africville Suite, described by some as the most important Canadian jazz album of the year.

away in 1992. Although a Montreal native, Sealy’s paternal grandmother was a descendant of two of the Africville community’s founders. Sealy himself was living in Halifax during the time of Africville’s shameful destruction and relocation of its inhabitants. The work has grown and evolved over the years from the original twelve pieces with additional music and lyrics, including a new composition entitled “The Seaview African United Baptist Church.” “It was when I did my research, that’s when I really got into the story and the story that really needed to be told,” says Sealy. “When I found out about what they did and when I found out how they did it, the sneaky way that they conned people into getting off their properties, and the injustice of it all. Right near the end, there was a core of people in the community that just did not want to leave, were not going to leave, that’s it. Well, they came in around midnight with a bulldozer and they bulldozed the church. And in a community like that when you kill the church, you kill the heart, and that was so demoralizing.”
Africville, once an area of Halifax, was Canada’s oldest black community, dating back to the early 1800s. It was razed in the 1960s, a victim of urban renewal. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1996, and in 2005, the provincial Africville Act included a call for a formal apology from the government, financial compensation, and historic preservation that included a rebuilding of the historic Seaview African United Baptist Church, the heart of the community, demolished in 1969.
Sealy says the work was challenging to write because there was no particular musical style that characterized the community. “They listened to the radio, they listened to Motown, they listened to Hank Jones, they listened to Don Messer, they listened to everybody,” he observes. “So what I ended up doing was basing the suite on events, personalities, and locations.” There are, for example, movements about Joe Louis (“Brown Bomber”) and Duke Ellington (“Duke’s in Town”), both of whom had visited Africville.
Africville Stories, an expansion and reworking of Africville Suite, puts to music impressions of this once-vibrant community. The work began as a shorter musical piece consisting of three movements and dedicated to the memory of Sealy’s father, who passed
Vocalist for Africville Stories is Jackie Richardson, who had also appeared on the original 1996 album. In 1954, when she was a child, Richardson moved with her family to Toronto from Donora, Pennsylvania, where she began singing in the First Baptist Church in Donora.
Richardson was a member of 1960s Toronto soul group The Tiaras before pursuing a solo career, for which she has won numerous awards for both her singing and acting, including a Gemini Award for her role in The Gospel According to the Blues and a Dora Award in 2004 for the musical Cookin’ at the Cookery. In 2017, Richardson won the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award for her theater and music achievements. Together this power trio marvellously evoke the life of the historic community of Africville with a grand musical work that has been received enthusiastically by audiences across Canada, the United States, and Europe. As a Canadian jazz tapestry, it has taken its place alongside the great Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite. - Dr. Barry Keith Grant BrockU.ca
