The FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) is located in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario at the corner of St. Paul and Carlisle Streets on the shared traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Neutral Peoples and many other Indigenous People from across Turtle Island. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. We offer our sincere gratitude and respect to the original and continued stewards of this land and are reminded that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous Peoples.

We also acknowledge Indigenous, Black, other Racialized Communities and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People who have been marginalized for centuries and more — and our collective responsibility to take action for a better world free from oppression, discrimination and racism.

One of my favourite moments in life is when I am at a concert and towards the end of the show I suddenly realize that I have been smiling for the entire duration.

Music fills my soul; it lifts me up and takes me to a world filled with beauty and possibility. How lucky am I to work in an environment where I get to experience this almost every day of the year? How lucky are we to have such exceptional live performance and cinema right here in Niagara? To answer both, we are VERY lucky.

The arts have the ability to transform our moods, our perspectives and create a sense of belonging. The PAC team want nothing more than to help you make these experiences happen at YOUR performing arts centre. No matter your taste or your budget, we have something just for you.

A new ticket price is now available to anyone under 30 years of age to provide access for young adults and youth to experience live performances* at the PAC. A limited number of tickets will be available for select shows at either a $15 or $25 value. Tickets can be purchased online or through box office and be available for pick up at will call with proof of age for all ticket holders. *Only available for select PAC programming. Accessible seating and assistive hearing devices are available upon request.

Accessible drop off is available in front of the Box Office Entrance on St. Paul Street and along Carlisle St. We are also conveniently located kittycorner from the St. Catharines main bus terminal making us very accessible via public transit.

LIVING MINO BIMAADIZIWIN: An Indigenous Journey through the Arts

Curated/directed by Michele-Elise Burnett, Artistic Director of Celebration of Nations and President of Kakekalanicks Indigenous Consulting Company

Living Mino Bimaadiziwin: An Indigenous Journey through the Arts is an immersive visual and audio exhibition that showcases artifacts and a variety of visual artwork by Indigenous artists, including renowned Métis artist Christi Belcourt, as well as Leona Skye, the late Carl Beam, Jill Lunn, Philip Cote, April Mitchell-Boudreau, Marie Louise Bowering, Mary Annette Clause, and Fallon Farinacci. The exhibition takes visitors through a journey of Indigenous life pre and during contact in order to better understand today’s contemporary realities through a highly impactful and immersive installation.

The exhibition includes paintings, collage, fabric, audio, and jewelry and also features pieces from The Red Dress Exhibit: If Only These Dresses Could Tell Their Story, a powerful installation which has been on tour across North America. Produced audio documentaries, narrative signage, and an interpretive brochure give visitors additional ways to connect with the exhibition’s message - the direct impact Residential Schools have on today’s Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2Spirit individuals (MMIWG2S) epidemic.

Kaha:wi Dance Theatre HOMELANDS

Homelands is the 2023 Dora Award-winning multimedia performance that braids earthy and cinematic media, sound design and dance performance. Homelands places Yethi’nihstenha (many womxn) within the homelands and waters of Kahnyen’kehàka territory / enhsenonhstate’ of upper state New York and around Ohswé:ken (Six Nations of the Grand River). Onkwehón:we (people of the way of forever) have always been and will continue to be tied to our lands and water and our kinship connections on A’nowarà:ke (Turtle Island).

Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Santee Smith, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre is one of the world’s preeminent dance companies and Santee Smith was awarded the 2023 Governor General Award for her contributions in the field of performance in Canada.

BORDER CROSSING / Blues

In this concert event produced by Tim Johnson (RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked The World and Celebration of Nations Artistic Producer), two celebrated Indigenous bands, Digging Roots from within Canada, and The Ripcords from within the United States, will perform blues and rock infused songs that reveal the continuity of Indigenous cultures across the dividing line. Interspersed within the concert will be video segments that inform and regale the audience about the living history of Indigenous Border Crossing Blues.

Digging Roots are a Juno-winning husband and wife music duo, Raven Kanatakta Polson-Lahache and ShoShona Kish, whose style blends folk-rock, pop, blues and hip hop with the traditional sounds of Indigenous music.

The Ripcords have performed across the northeast to crowds in New York City and Boston as well as their home in Central New York for over twenty years.

HOWARD JONES ACOUSTIC TRIO

Legendary singer, songwriter and keyboardist Howard Jones celebrates 40 years of his incredible career with his new world tour, a ‘sonic and visual feast’ that will include Jones’ greatest hits and fan favourites.

Howard Jones became a household name in the ‘80s and ‘90s with global hits including “Things Can Only Get Better”, “No One is to Blame”, “What is Love?”, “Pearl in the Shell”, “Like To Get To Know You Well”, along with his debut “New Song” which are all etched into pop culture history. Honouring Sisters in Spirit

This special edition of The Circle will take place on Sisters in Spirit Day, an annual day to honour and remember the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, and to support grieving families and community members. Following the Sisters in Spirit walk, which begins at St. Catharines City Hall at 5pm, all are welcome to join The Circle where two formidable artists will share their gifts in Robertson Theatre among the Living Mino Bimaadiziwin: An Indigenous Journey through the Arts exhibit curated by Michele-Elise Burnett.

Featured artists:

Geneviève Gros-Louis Salamone, a renowned violinist, film composer and producer from the Huron-Wendat Nation, has gained global acclaim for her exceptional talents. With a violin performance degree and Indigenous studies background from McGill University, Geneviève

composes captivating film scores, performs globally with her mesmerising violin, and produces award-winning music at Wendat Records. Her music has graced esteemed events like Cannes Film Festival, Paris Fashion Week, and Wendake International Pow Wow, captivating audiences with her cultural storytelling.

Thana Redhawk is a multi-talented artist, poet, actor and activist who has made a name for herself in the world of spoken word poetry, music, film, event and music production. With a passion for social justice and using her art as a means of activism, Redhawk has become an award-winning performer, spoken word artist and public speaker. In addition to her work as a poet and musician, she is also a skilled talent manager. With her diverse range of skills and talents, Redhawk is a powerful voice in the arts community and beyond.

Born in Creignish, Nova Scotia, Ashley MacIsaac picked up his first fiddle before his first rattle. Cape Breton is in his DNA, and this fiddle superhero plays with an intensity, authenticity and passion that is hard to deny. This music master will grace our beautiful Robertson Theatre with an evening of jaw dropping, traditional Celtic music all in support of the PAC’s community programs.

This year’s 2nd Annual East Coast Kitchen Party includes open bar, lite bites, rousing entertainment — all in support of FirstOntario PAC’s community programs. The night will also include a live and silent auction with incredible packages, prizes and so much more!

Last year, patrons of the inaugural East Coast Kitchen Party helped raise just under $60,000 for our community

programs. Proceeds from the event support the PAC’s many community programs like our imPACt arts education program, free public programming during Celebration of Nations, community film nights, free film and music series, partnership programs with local nonprofits and many other initiatives that ensure that the arts are available and accessible for all.

CELEBRATING GORD AND THE HIP w/Songs and Stories

A community celebration of the music and legacy of Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip featuring local artists, student contributors and the winners of an upcoming contest inviting Niagara to share their favourite Hip memory, poem or song. The evening will feature the rock n’ roll stylings of The Poets, a Tragically Hip tribute band from Moosonee and Moose Factory coming all the way to St. Catharines to share their favourite Hip tunes as Downie Wenjack Artist Ambassadors. The play confronts modern issues of climate change, artificial intelligence and our relationship to technology… monsters of our own making!

When a young graphic novelist geek named Mary discovers the journal of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, she’s drawn into his uncanny story of secret experiments to conquer death. She discovers that we all need to face our own fears… before they face us!

With its mashup of cinematic and animation techniques, and its skilled performances, this Frankenstein is incredibly engaging to watch while artfully introducing young audiences to art, science and navigating emotional heights and depths.

The Electric Storm Collective WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES THE RIVER

When Lightning Strikes the River is a narrative suite of 14 songs about the feminized queer experience, romance, partnership, friendship, mental health, depression, grief, redemption, spirituality, and ultimately, love.

The evocative lyrics are set to lush harmonies, organically shifting time signatures and intricate ostinatos, drawing on influences from jazz, pop, folk, and Brazilian traditional and contemporary styles of music. The pieces are presented within a narrative arc, from the first spark of a

About the Collective

The Electric Storm Collective is a group of artists who have collaborated to bring this suite of music to life and to the stage. Poet Eva Tihanyi (St. Catharines, ON) and musician Carlie Howell (Iris, PEI) formed the collective in 2018, when they collaboratively composed the 14 songs in this suite. In 2019 they brought together a quartet to perform the first iteration of this music, and in 2020,

relationship, through passion, partnership, heartbreak, the support of community to rebuild to a place of self-love and of self-knowledge. The music and its theatrical setting are both a result and a reflection of the creative collaboration between poet Eva Tihanyi and musician Carlie Howell.

Carlie took this music to the Banff Centre, and started arranging it for the group of musicians you see on stage today. As the project evolved, the Electric Storm Collective grew to include visual artist Julie Himel, as well as videographers, recording engineers, co-producers, and co-presenters all giving their care and artistry to When Lightning Strikes The River.

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS

Featuring a blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker with a revolving backing band. The group has emerged with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. GLS is renowned for homespun folk and lush arrangements of their live shows. They join us in support their stunning 2023 release, Uncertain Country Presented in partnership with Cicada Fest.

Houses of the Holy is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin released in March 1973 by Atlantic Records. In My Body explores the multi-generational dynamic and the hardship and heroism of aging in street dancing. In keeping with hiphop culture, b-boys/b-girls present a façade of confidence and invincibility as they engage in battles to prove their value and establish their dominance. The resulting vocabulary is one of the most physically demanding and visually impressive of the dance genres and leaves no room for the expression of vulnerability.

In this dynamic investigation into how street dancers persevere in the battle against time, In My Body links the culture of hip-hop with a multi-generational company of dancers.

Bboyizm is the premier street dance company in Canada, led by dancer-choreographer Crazy Smooth. The company promotes and preserves the foundation, authenticity, and essence of all street dances. Their creations and programs are platforms for authentic self-expression.

Performer, composer, activist, musicologistthese roles are all infused into Jeremy Dutcher’s art. His music, too, transcends boundaries: unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home, and teeming with the urgency of modern-day struggles of resistance.

A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Dutcher’s Polaris-prize winning debut album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, was created following a research project on archival

recordings of traditional Wolastoqiyik songs at the Canadian Museum of History. Delicate, sublime vocal melodies ring out atop piano lines that cascade through a vibrant range of emotions. The anguish and joy of the past erupt fervently into the present through Jeremy’s bold approach to composition and raw, affective performances enhanced by his outstanding tenor techniques.

This fall, Dutcher releases his much-anticipated follow up, MOTEWOLONUWOK, with a special performance in Partridge Hall.

There are very few female singers out there that are used as an example to describe a sound/style, but Sass is one of them. The roots that grew Canada’s Queen of Rock started in Europe and edged across the pond to the musical metallurgy of Montreal in the ‘70s. Montreal’s burgeoning scene included a ‘no holds barred’ approach to glam, punk, blues, prog, metal, country, jazz, folk, with the added attraction of a homegrown sound created by the Quebecois artists of the decade. In 2003, the animated French feature film

The Triplets of Belleville swept the globe, raking up dozens of awards and nominations – not to mention the hearts of countless admirers along the way. Much of it came down to the Oscarnominated score by Benoit Charest, which grabbed the audience by the ears and dragged them into the streets of 1920s Paris and Le Jazz Hot.

This live jazz orchestra performance of the original score, conducted by Benoit Charest, accompanies a live screening of the beloved film.

The story of four neurodiverse brothers, told through a theatrical escape into the art and science of piano tuning. It is impossible to perfectly tune a piano – something that musician and theatre-maker James Smith knows all too well.

A few years ago James taught himself how to tune pianos as an additional source of income between gigs. Through pursuing this work, he discovered something even more valuable –the perfect metaphor through which to process the mental complexities of his family.

Between James and his brothers, they have had life-long journeys with OCD, autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Throughout the piece, James shares the story of his family, while getting the piano in front of him beautifully and imperfectly in tune. Mature content.

Each month, The Film House is committed to partnering with our local community groups to provide one ‘pay-what-you-can’ community screening and supporting additional community screenings that often include a panel discussion related to the topic of the film.

New for the 23/24 season, the Youth Film Club is a chance for secondary age students to roll up their sleeves and get involved in animating one of Niagara’s cultural hubs with programs and events that matter to young people. Applications are open each May and the Film Club runs from Sept - June.

Niagara Symphony Orchestra POSTCARDS FROM A BLUE PLANET: A MUSICAL ADVENTURE

Developed for children ages 4 and up, this imaginative performance showcases a variety of wind instruments including multiple flutes, clarinets, bassoons, and saxophone. Written by Canadian composer Kevin Lau, Postcards from a Blue Planet is a love letter to our home planet that takes the listener on a musical tour of diverse biospheres. The Niagara Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present this program as a part of the PAC’s Family Day activities.

The Flower Garden: An interactive musical performance where audience members help to make music to encourage flowers to grow.

Dragon on the Hill: Audiences animate and dance with a large Dragon puppet, sing a lullaby for the Dragon, and then imagine what might happen next in the story.

The Cardinal: The audience helps a comedic human sized bird rebuild their broken nest.

Puppet Friends: A tabletop puppet piece about friends helping one another. Creation Station: A craft space where families can build their own puppets and crafts, and contribute to a community art project called Carousels of Hope by writing their hope for the year ahead on a carousel horse.

THE TREWS House of Ill Fame 20th Anniversary Tour

The Trews will be playing their platinum selling debut album House of Ill Fame in its entirety plus other hits and fan favourites from their catalogue of music.

Originally from Halifax, and emerging out of Hamilton, Ontario in the early 2000s, hard rock combo The Trews earned a reputation as one of Canada’s hardest-working bands. The band has notched hundreds of shows, breaking through to the mainstream with the 2003 Juno-nominated hit single “Not Ready to Go” from their gold-certified debut album House of Ill Fame. A hooky mix of alt-rock edge and melodic,

riffy swagger, the quartet became a chart staple, earning accolades and legions of fans with albums like 2005’s Den of Thieves and 2014’s eponymous release. THE PEKING ACROBATS

For the last 35 years, The Peking Acrobats have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control.

The Peking Acrobats are often accompanied by live musicians who skillfully play traditional Chinese instruments; the time-honoured Chinese music coalesces with high-tech special effects and awe-inspiring acrobatic feats, creating an exuberant entertainment event with the festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival.

The legendary Big Sugar celebrate their groundbreaking Five Hundred Pounds deluxe vinyl release from Third Man Records with a two-set theatrical presentation. The show spans their storied career from Hugo Boss suit days to their more recent Roots Rock Reggae vibes. Gordie Johnson’s power trio breathe life into their early blues and jazz tinged songbook that has influenced generations of guitarists including Jack White, The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule and ZZ Top. “The theatre setting gives us the opportunity to explore a much wider range of styles,” states Gordie Johnson, “but it is still a Big Sugar rock and roll show!”

Jazz at Lincoln Centre’s highly anticipated show celebrates the Great American Songbook in all of its playful – and sophisticated glory – brought to life by two of this generation’s brightest stars.

Each armed with prodigious trumpet talent and vocal charm, Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III will relive and re-imagine some of the classic partners in jazz and popular song, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Peggy Lee. Featuring songs by Gershwin, Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many more and joined by a who’s who of New York all-stars, this is an “unforgettable” evening of singin’ and swingin’ with Bria and Benny.

Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine), have a musical partnership like no other.

Béla Fleck is a 16-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres, and Abigail Washburn is a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized the instrument by combining it with Far East culture and sounds.

On stage, Fleck & Washburn will perform pieces from their Grammy-winning self-titled debut

as well as their new record, Echo in the Valley (Rounder 2017). With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling the noble instrument from its most familiar arena into new and unique realms, Béla & Abigail meet in the mean, head-on, to present music that feels wildly innovative and familiar at the same time.

Spirit and Tradition layers imagery, soundscape, and Coastal Indigenous masked dance, immersing the audience into the rich ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Dancers of Damelahamid is an Indigenous dance company founded upon over five decades of extensive work of song and dance revitalization. For countless generations Indigenous dance played an integral part in defining art and culture. In response to the lifting of the Potlatch Ban (1884-1951), was the resurfacing of dance and the awakening of an art form that

was outlawed for almost 70 years. The Dancers of Damelahamid emerged in the 1960s out of an urgency to ensure that these artistic practices were not lost and has since established itself as a leading professional Indigenous dance company.

Côté Danse

X (Dix)

X (Dix) is a contemporary dance piece that connects to the myth of Odysseus, about journeying far but always desiring to return home. The piece explores the notion of the “inner compass” and the idea that “home” may be a state of mind.

Five performers share a minimalist stage setting amplified by the surging and sculptural sounds of American experimental band Son Lux.

Informed by his classical ballet vocabulary, Côté’s choreography contours space with resonant geometries and fervent human connections. Contemporary lines and forms with a sleek edge and refined athleticism give his work a bracing quality.

World premiere! Kimiko’s Pearl is a new ballet that unfurls the bittersweet story of one family spanning four generations. It is told through the eyes of Kimiko, a 15-year-old Toronto girl who discovers an old family trunk containing her great-grandfather’s diary and other precious keepsakes. Kimiko’s story reflects the tragedies and triumphs of Japanese Canadian families before, during and after World War II.

Inspired by the family history of Bravo Niagara!’s co-founders Christine Mori and Alexis Spieldenner, Kimiko’s Pearl is based on a story by Emmy Award winner Howard Reich. The production features original music by Kevin Lau, choreography by Yosuke Mino with dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and three generations of Japanese Canadian visual artists and musicians.

You’re in luck! There are over 1,000 parking spots within a five-minute walk to the PAC.

We recommend the multi-level covered garage on Garden Park with 595 spaces and 26 accessible spaces. Please note that the address is 72 Carlisle St. but the entrance is off of Garden Park.

Parking is generally free after 6pm. Special event parking fees are in effect when events are happening. Payment is by cash only and is paid on entrance.

Accessible drop off is available in front of the Box Office entrance on St. Paul St. and along Carlisle St. We are also conveniently located kitty-corner from St. Catharines main bus terminal making us very accessible via public transit.
