FILM+DINING GUIDE SUMMER > JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2018
THE FILM HOUSE FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in Downtown St. Catharines
SUMMER CINEMA NOW Fair weather is here. Our windows and worlds open with the return of sunny days and The Film House is in lock step with three months of eye-widening cinema. There are a host of great feature titles on the way. Stand-outs include Wes Anderson’s whimsical Isle of Dogs, a stop-animation comedy winning audiences over; director Raoul Peck’s The Young Karl Marx, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth, and Anton Chekov’s The Seagull with stars Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening in lauded performances. These and over a dozen more engaging films will be on screen over the summer months. With warm evenings, film in the fresh air is back. Screenings are slated in the grassed-oasis called the Mann Raceway Plaza. This mini-park between the FirstOntario PAC and Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School is a hidden sanctuary downtown and a great place to see a film. Have your say as to what titles light-up the outdoor screen. There are films in each of June, July, and August; choose heroes or super heroes (Karate Kid, Rocky, and Batman) or perennial crowdpleasers (Dirty Dancing, Footloose, and The Forbidden Dance). Votes are tallied on our website firstontariopac.ca. These titles are programmed with all ages in mind, and best of all, they’re free. Grab your picnic blanket and head down. The summer program also includes Late-Night screenings when three cult titles storm the screen for film-loving nighthawks: Pulp Fiction, The Room, and Birdemic: Shock and Terror. These are all classics, uh, in their own right. While Pulp Fiction needs no introduction, both The Room and Birdemic made their mark through parading norms (moments intended to be serious but due to poor execution, excessive melodrama, or plain absurdity became unintentionally funny). These are films so bad that they inspire plastic spoon throwing and sing-a-longs. The Room screened last winter and returns as we brace ourselves for director Tommy Wiseau’s next feature, Best F(r)iends, rounding out our June calendar. The roster of Wednesday night documentaries has been bolstered by the addition of monthly films that explore the world of architecture. These critically acclaimed films delve into how architecture and design impact our daily lives and are presented with the support of the Niagara Society of Architects. Watch for post-screening Q+As tied in with these presentations. Summer’s a time to relax and The Film House is ready to be part of your chill-out routine. The dialogue between Pollack and Gehry, as intimate as that of any two friends of long standing, courses like a continuous melodic line through the film.
