FILM+DINING GUIDE The Film House
L SPECISAEASON S AWARD AM PROGR
February+March 2018
Two Years of Great Films This February marks two years since the projector first lit up the big screen in The Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. In that time, over four hundred film titles have been presented. First-run features, documentaries, and family films have been the mainstay, along with repertory classics and cult stand-outs. All have been selected with the intent to bring a mix of films that will appeal to the varied tastes and interests of all the citizens of St. Catharines. The Film House has connected St. Catharines and Niagara to the exhilarating and everexpanding world of cinema. The community has responded. Almost 50,000 film-goers have, “taken in a show”. Almost all of these films were titles that otherwise wouldn’t have been seen in our city. The Film House arrived in the nick of time for cinema culture in St. Catharines, at a juncture when a single corporately-run cine-mall had narrowed film choice to blockbusters and a handful of other titles. And while The Film House now makes it possible to see a host of extraordinary films in our downtown, Netflix and other streaming services are applying new pressures, producing and releasing titles direct to the home market. Just as with video cassette players and satellite services in the past, the landscape of film is being altered. Through these shifts there is one thing that didn’t and will not change: the incomparable experience of being swept away by a film; on the big screen, in a purpose-built theatre, surrounded by others who appreciate great cinema. We’re continuing to expand our audience. We encourage you to become a member, receive discounts on tickets and concessions, and get on the inside track with the wonderfully diverse program of titles the Performing Arts Centre brings every month. Victoria & Abdul
UK, USA, 2017. Directed by Stephen Frears. 111 min. PG Abdul Karim arrives from India to participate in Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The young clerk is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As Victoria questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance that her household and inner circle try to destroy. As their friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. “Dench is 82 now, but she remains the world’s most formidable pixie, and in Victoria & Abdul she’s in her element and in her snappish, showbiz-melancholy prime.” - Owen Gleiberman, Variety Thurs 1 Feb 7PM / Fri 2 Feb 6:30PM Sat 3 Feb 6:30PM Sun 4 Feb 7PM / Tues 6 Feb 7PM
Happy End
France, Austria, Germany, 2017. Directed by Michael Haneke. 107 min. 14A Master auteur Michael Haneke (Amour, The White Ribbon, Hidden) returns with a biting satire on bourgeois family values set in the shadow of the European refugee crisis. Featuring a cast of top acting talent, including Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones, it’s a piercing dark comedy on the blind preoccupations of middle-class angst. Happy End bears all the hallmarks of Haneke’s uniquely stark and unsympathetic style. Pairing pitch-black humour with chillingly precise direction, it’s proof—if we ever needed it—that he remains one of modern cinema’s true visionaries. “This is filmmaking of the highest order, a masterly display of chilling precision and with performances of fierce intensity” - Edward Lawrenson, The Big Issue

whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers must now band together to survive a punishing landscape that’s crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers. “A finely crafted Western which doesn’t flinch from portraying the horrors inflicted during that violent era, and which boasts an astounding performance from Christian Bale.” - Dan Jolin, Empire

Lady Bird

Directed by Greta Gerwig. 94 min. 14A Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in
2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. “The kind of modest, miraculous low-budget gem that takes on a life of its own.” - Peter Debruge, Variety

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their
daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined. “This brutal, smart movie is impeccably made, as well as surprising, shocking, and funny, while also offering a compassionate, thoughtful look at race.” - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media

When his sec-
ond-in-command, Officer Dixon—an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence— gets involved, the battle is only exacerbated. “So sharply written that it cuts, the third movie from award-winning playwright Martin McDonagh is a dramedy that starts with cleverness and wit, then opens up into something truthfully human.” - Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media

Marina is a trans woman and for most of Orlando’s family, her gender identity is an aberration, a perversion. So Marina struggles for the right to be herself. As the sophisticated soiree starts to unravel, a night that began with champagne soon ends up with arguments, shouting and a pointed gun. “Patricia Clarkson steals the show, but everyone in Potter’s gifted cast gets their moment to shine in a sharp-edged, claustrophobic parlour piece that puts the boot into middle-class mores.” - Phil De Semlyen, Empire “A consummate drawing-room divertissement, played with relish by a dream ensemble.” - Guy Lodge, Variety

Death of Stalin
France, UK, 2017. Directed by Armando Iannucci. 106 min. NR The one-liners fly as fast as political fortunes fall in this uproarious, wickedly irreverent satire from Armando Iannucci (Veep, In the Loop). Moscow, 1953: when tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin drops dead, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic
power struggle to be the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are the dweeby Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and the sadistic secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale). But as they bumble, brawl and backstab their way to the top, just who is running the government? Combining palace intrigue with rapid-fire farce, this audacious comedy is a bitingly funny takedown of bureaucratic dysfunction performed.
