Film+Dining Guide designed by Niagara Artists Centre Cover Image: Roma
BRING THE SPRING, BRING THE WEIRD Spring is the most supernatural season. Magically, vivid green things sprout from the earth, birds return to fill the air with song, and many warm-blooded creatures, humans included, become afflicted with something called ‘springfever.’ Spring. It’s the weirdest. It’s a tough act to follow but The Film House is going to try. The last issue of the Film + Dining Guide shared the frustration of being shut-out of the opportunity to bring Roma, the year’s most talked about film. Well, good news, Roma will be on the big screen where it belongs this April. Weird, huh? By special arrangement, The Film House also brings The Man Who Killed Don Quixote directed by original Python Terry Gilliam. This is a film almost thirty years in the making, a production history so long and weird that it became the subject of its own documentary, Lost in La Mancha. Yorgos Lanthimos, the filmmaker responsible for such weirdly wonderful films as The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer shows up in the program again with the acclaimed period comedy-drama The Favourite, a title that topped the heap and tied Roma for Oscar nominations this year while also earning Olivia Colman Best Actress. To mark 4-20 (Saturday 20 April) and Canada’s legalization of cannabis, Late Night Screenings return to The Film House with a presentation of Dazed and Confused, the smoke-filled coming-of-age comedy that launched Matthew McConaughey’s career. McConaughey makes the screen again in May as the lead in Harmony Korine’s latest The Beach Bum, starring alongside Snoop Dog, Isla Fisher, and Jimmy Buffet—films won’t likely come much weirder than this. To round things out, Bob and Doug show up in, uh, Strange Brew for National Canadian Film Day on Wednesday 17 April. Sneaking a live mouse into a beer bottle to get a free case will seem like a fairly ordinary plot for a film in this company. And hey, you really can get some things for free without going to such lengths, tickets for Strange Brew are on The Film House!

THE FAVOURITE
Ireland, 2018. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. 119 min. R The Favourite is a bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy and betrayal in the court of Queen Anne in early 18th century England. At the center of the story is the Queen herself (Olivia Colman), whose relationship with her confidante, adviser and clandestine lover Sarah Churchill, Duchess of
Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) is turned upside down by the arrival of the Duchess’s younger cousin Abigail (Emma Stone). Soon the balance of power shifts between the women as they jockey for influence with the Queen and the court. “The comedy is elegant, frequently dark and genuinely witty. The spectacle is gorgeous. The revisionism is gleeful.” - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

“Stockholm is far from the first movie to believably show a crime victim coming to sympathize with a criminal. But it’s a funny and agile one…” - John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter “While Stockholm presents itself as a familiar bank robbery story, its madcap energy keeps things fresh and entertaining from start-to-finish.” - Matthew Passantino, Film Threat

NR Sat 20 Apr 4PM / Sun 21 Apr 7PM / Wed 24 Apr 7PM / Sat 27 Apr 9PM Thierry Loa invites us to a true film experience with this symphonic look at our civilization, in which his grand images document the marks left by the Anthropocene era in the western world full of machines, technology and dense crowds. Gorgeously shot in black and white film, images of our societies succeed one another over an immersive soundtrack, standing in for speech. Somewhere between the avant-garde city symphony films of the 1920s and the works of Godfrey Reggio, 20-22 OMEGA combines fascination with the new world and the looming end of the world – like its title, which represents the previous century, the next, and the last letter of the Greek alphabet.
