Pots and Kettles The film awards season continues to ramp up and with it the anticipated political sideshow. A welcome addition to the discourse was Ricky Gervais’ evisceration of Hollywood hypocrites in his last, no-holds-barred stint as Golden Globes host. “You say you’re woke, but the companies you work for, I mean, unbelievable: Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you? So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right? You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God, and #*$% off.” There’s not much hope that this shrapnel blast of wit punctured the inflated egos of the self-righteous who continue to smugly reduce today’s complicated challenges to simple binary proclamations and admonishments. The self-congratulatory tone and sanctity of much of what transpires on all sizes of screens these days, and in much of the arts, often seems so deeply embedded it’s inseparable from the media and the art forms themselves. Despite all the narcissistic fingers wagging in the air, you can still be pointed in the right direction to pursue truths that foster understanding and bring change. A start, is to find a space where people tell their stories in ways that draw people together. When we act or experience on our own, we do something less than participate in the moment, we live at a distance from it. Film is one of those ever-rarer arenas where intimate experiences are empowered by the presence of others. Since the The Film House opened many in St. Catharines have re-discovered the rewards of enjoying films as they were intended to be seen. A new attendance record was set in 2019 and we want to keep audiences growing. The doors are open for you to be a part of a screening downtown. Get in here, it’s cold out there.

Phyllis Lambert, Blanche Lemco van Ginkel, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander and Denise Scott Brown may not be household names, but architecture and urban planning aficionados likely know that these women have worked with some of the greatest architects of our time, including the likes of Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, and Robert Venturi. In the course of their inspiring careers, they have left an indelible mark on several cities across North America and Europe.
