FILM+DINING GUIDE JUNE / JULY / AUGUST 2019

HOW IT WORKS Our summer line-up is a proverbial hum-dinger. There is a grand total of thirty-two films screening from June through August and some of the most sought after cinema experiences are awaiting you. How does this eclectic smorgasbord of cinematic choice arrive in downtown St. Catharines? By committee, of course. While the streaming services zealously collect data on the entertainment choices you’re making to feed into ever-more complicated algorithms—dulling your palette in the process—our Programming Group’s apparatus is a very human construction working without ones and zeros to bring spice to film experiences. Refreshingly, the Programming Group also operates without much bureaucratic framework so the sketch on the facing page is all we have to describe its inner workings.

THE FILM HOUSE The Film Programming Group is: Barry K. Grant, Joan Nicks, Sara Palmieri, Natasha Pedros, Stephen Remus, Kasia Smuga, and Annie Wilson

PETERLOO

UK, 2019. Directed by Mike Leigh. 154 min. 14A An epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St. Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history.

“Mike Leigh’s Peterloo, a riot of verbal eloquence concerning a notorious episode of political violence, is a brilliant and demanding film.” - A.O. Scott, New York Times “There are contemporary resonances for those who want them, but Peterloo succeeds on being an impactful recreation of a time and its injustices.” - Andrew Lowry, Empire

Directed by Benedikt Erlingsson. 101 min. 14A Halla is a committed undercover eco-terrorist trying to save Iceland’s natural landscapes from industrialist destruction, but when a long-desired child becomes available for adoption, she must choose between the greater good and her own dreams. Presented in Icelandic, Spanish and Ukrainian, English with English subtitles.

“Woman at War is an environmental drama wrapped in whimsical comedy and tied with a bow of midlife soulsearching.” - Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times “Filmmaker Erlingsson has an eye for detail, a flair for the absurd–a sousaphone-based trio pops up here and there–and a deft touch with social commentary and political satire.” - Brad Wheeler, The Globe and Mail

THE GRIZZLIES

Canada, 2018. Directed by Miranda de Pencier. 97 min. PG The Grizzlies is based on the inspiring true story of the youth of Kugluktuk, Nunavut who were transformed by the sport of lacrosse, family, tradition, and community, and in turn, transformed their town with the highest suicide rate in all of North America into a model of hope and youth-led resilience. The Grizzlies is more than the usual triumph through sports movie - it is a true story about a group of Inuit students who changed their teacher and eventually their whole community for the better. Driven by remarkable performances by the young, Nunavut -based cast, and seeded with unassailable authenticity because of it’s dramatic location, The Grizzlies proves to be

one of the most unexpectedly affirming films of the year! Winner of the Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award by the Directors Guild of Canada and official selection of TIFF Top Ten Canadian Films this year! “Story with authenticity and heart, and that makes all the difference. It scores.” - Norman Wilner, NOW Magazine

WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY USA, 2019. Directed by Madeleine Olnek. 84 min. 14A

In the mid-19th century, Emily Dickinson is writing prolifically, baking gingerbread, and enjoying a passionate, lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, her friend and sister-in-law Susan...yes this is the iconic American poet, popularly thought to have been a recluse. Beloved comic Molly Shannon

leads in this humorous yet bold reappraisal of Dickinson, informed by her private letters. A timely critique of how women’s history is rewritten, Wild Nights With Emily remains vibrant, irreverent, and tender—a perhaps closer depiction of Emily Dickinson’s real life than anything seen before. “The film’s playful tone is a corrective to a century of scholarship that insisted on projecting the image of a moody spinster onto Emily Dickinson.” - Pat Brown, Slant Magazine

Parisian life delights the young dancer, but the KGB officers who watch his every move become

increasingly suspicious of his behavior and his friendship with the young Parisienne Clara Saint. When they finally confront Nureyev with a shocking demand, he is forced to make a heart-breaking decision. “It’s a movie full of small pleasures.” - Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times Presented in Russian, English, French with English subtitles.

HIGH LIFE

Germany, France, UK, Poland, USA, 2018. Directed by Claire Denis. 110 min. 18A Deep space. Monte and his daughter Willow live together aboard a spacecraft, in complete isolation. A solitary man, whose strict selfdiscipline is a protection against desire—his own and that of others—Monte fathered the girl against his will. His sperm was used to inseminate Boyse, the young woman who

gave birth to her. They were members of a crew of prisoners: death row inmates. Guinea pigs sent on a mission to a black hole. Now only Monte and Willow remain. Through his daughter, for the first time, he experiences the birth of an all-powerful love. Together, alone, father and daughter approach their destination—the black hole in which all time and space cease to exist. “Claire Denis’ English feature debut, High Life is fascinating, disturbing, sensual, hypnotic, and provocative all at the same time.” - Rochell Pereira, BookMyShow

two tough police detectives isn’t enough, the driver, who has a doctor’s degree in philosophy which makes his mind mingle with remorse, must find a way to get rid of this dirty money. “Arcand approaches it with world-weary wit and the kind of warming optimism that might not appear out of place in a Frank Capra classic.” - Allan Hunter, Screen International Presented in French with English subtitles.

BIRDS OF PASSAGE

UK, 2019. Directed by Trevor Nunn. 110 min. 14A From the Oscar-nominated team behind the genre-defying Embrace of the Serpent, comes an equally audacious saga centered on the Wayúu indigenous people during a crucial period in recent Colombian history. Torn between his desire to become a powerful man and his duty to uphold his culture’s values, Rapayet (José Acosta) enters the drug

trafficking business in the 1970s and finds quick success despite his tribe’s matriarch Ursula’s (Carmiña Martínez) disapproval. Ignoring ancient omens, Rapayet and his family get caught up in a conflict where honour is the highest currency and debts are paid with blood. “The movie is a knockout.” - David Edelstein, New York Magazine Presented in Wayuu, Spanish, English with English subtitles.

RAFIKI

Kenya, South Africa, Germany, 2018. Directed by Wanuri Kahiu. 83 min. NR Bursting with the colourful street style and music of Nairobi’s vibrant youth culture, Rafiki is a tender love story between two young women in a country that still criminalizes homosexuality. Kena and Ziki have long been told that “good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives”—but they yearn for something more. Despite the political rivalry between

their families, the girls encourage each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them, Kena and Ziki must choose between happiness and safety. Initially banned in Kenya for its positive portrayal of queer romance, Rafiki won a landmark supreme court case chipping away at Kenyan anti-LGBT legislation. Rafiki is a hip tale of first love “reminiscent of the early work of Spike Lee” [Screen Daily] that’s “impossible not to celebrate” [Variety] ! Presented in English and Swahili with English subtitles.

In so doing, he is forced to examine his own failings as a husband and father. “Beautifully acted, richly photographed, and blessedly free of histrionics.
