FILM+DINING GUIDE FEBRUARY + MARCH 2019

Time Rolls ... A bunch of things converging in this issue of the Film & Dining Guide—hour hands pointing, calendar pages flipping—so this intro is on a time tip. They say it marches. And though it may be measured with relentless ticking it never feels like it’s keeping a steady pace. It saunters lazily one day and flashes by in a sprint the next. It leaves you messed up thinking things from a decade ago went down just the other day. All you ever know for certain is it’s really happening and it’s really going. Take for instance, that come February, it will have been three years since The Film House opened. It’s become so much a part of life for local film-lovers you wonder just how-inthe-heck we survived before the projector lit up and the opening scenes our first feature, Brooklyn, hit the screen. As we make another loop, the Academy Awards come around again (Sunday the 24th at 8PM). It’s the 91st edition of this adored/loathed celebration of movies, but no matter what side of the love/hate divide you’re on, the Oscars accomplish the feat of getting more of us thinking and talking about film. While the Academy broods over their decisions, we’re bringing some strong bets to complement the loads of contenders that have already come and gone. Watch for A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Vice (all in conversation for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor). Cold War and Shoplifters are coming (both rumoured for Best Foreign Film), and Free Solo will use the big screen to great effect (competing for Best Documentary). Sticking with the timing of things, and it’s not all good, mark this as the first year that Netflix officially mucked with how we’re able to experience great films. Both Cuarón’s Roma and the Cohens’ Ballad of Buster Scruggs were unavailable to The Film House, exclusive to select cinemas in major centres or, of course, watched at home. The irony of Roma’s 70mm cinematography and those incredible vistas in Scruggs being experienced on living room screens makes you shake your head. It’s clear that a fight for the future of cinema is on. Thankfully, all you need to do to be a good soldier is regularly treat yourself to a night at The Film House. The last stitch of this thread about time is that Film House programming partner, Niagara Artists Centre, turns 50 in 2019. This prompts the taking of a small breath and a glance in the rearview. Scattered throughout this year’s calendar will be classics from 1969, the year of NAC’s founding, and fortuitously, also a great year for film. Check True Grit, Easy Rider, and Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, all from 1969 and all in this program. Take the time to see film where it really happens, on the big screen. to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. “Director David Lowery brings his gentle, dreamy touch to this true story, taking it somewhere above most biopics; it’s smaller in scale, with less at stake, but it’s also somehow more legendary.” - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media “A fitting final turn from Redford, all easy charm and grace. It takes a lifetime of effort to look this effortless.” - Nev Pierce, Empire

“Widows masterfully blends high-art craftsmanship with a sharply drawn pulpy narrative to deliver a crime flick that’s equally smart and entertaining.” - Sandy Schaefer, Screen Rant “Simultaneously an affecting drama of selfdiscovery and hard-won female power.” - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

VICE

USA, 2018. Adam McKay. 132 min. 14A While serving as the CEO of a multinational corporation, former Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney (Christian Bale) is approached by presidential candidate George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell) and is asked to head the search committee to appoint his Vice President. Shortly later, Cheney is offered the candidacy himself and agrees, but only

if his duties can be expanded to include what he assures Bush are “mundane jobs,” like overseeing the military and foreign policy. He quickly begins pulling all the right strings to become the most powerful VP in American history. A comedy veteran, writer/director Adam McKay brings a strong irreverence and some quirky humor to this biopic, yet it can’t disguise its sheer outrage; its laughs come through openmouthed dismay. - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media

Directed by Henry Hathaway. 110 min. 14A Sat 2 Feb 6:30 PM + Sun 3 Feb 4PM After hired hand Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey) murders the father of 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby), she seeks vengeance and hires US Marshal “Rooster” Cogburn (John Wayne), a man of “true grit,” to track Chaney. As the two begin their pursuit, a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), joins the manhunt in hopes of capturing Chaney for the murder of a Texas senator and collecting a substantial reward. The three clash on their quest of bringing to justice the same man. “One of the glories of True Grit is that it recognizes Wayne’s special presence.” - Roger Ebert

BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE

USA, 1969. Directed by Paul Mazursky. 105 min. NR Sat 9 Feb 4PM After returning to Los Angeles from a group therapy session, documentary filmmaker Bob Sanders (Robert Culp) and his wife, Carol (Natalie Wood), find themselves becoming vigilante couples counselors, offering unsolicited advice to their best friends, Ted (Elliott Gould) and Alice Henderson (Dyan Cannon). Not wanting to be rude, the Hendersons play along, but some latent sexual tension among the four soon comes bubbling to the surface, and long-buried desires don’t stay buried for long. “The genius of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice is that it understands the peculiar nature of the moral crisis for Americans in this age group, and understands that the way to consider it is in a comedy.” - Roger Ebert

EASY RIDER

USA, 1969. Directed by Dennis Hopper. 95 min. 14A Sat 9 Mar 9PM + Sun 10 Mar 4PM Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper), two Harley-riding hippies, complete a drug deal in Southern California and decide to travel cross-country in search of spiritual truth. On their journey, they experience bigotry and hatred from the inhabitants of smalltown America and also meet with other travelers seeking alternative lifestyles. After a terrifying drug experience in New Orleans, the two travelers wonder if they will ever find a way to live peacefully in America. “Director Dennis Hopper has done an old and respectable thing. He has told his story in cinematic shorthand, instead of spelling it out in dreary detail.” - Roger Ebert

Germany, 1922. Directed by F.W. Murnau. 85 mins. NR Hosted by Film House Programming Member Joan Nicks Tickets are $14 students/artsworker, $36 seniors, $30 adult- visit galleryplayers.ca Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau's Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws– perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Nosferatu was an atypical expressionist film in that much of it was shot on location. Douglas Miller (Flute), Eric Mahar (Guitar) and Penner Mackay (Percussion) will improvise a live film score to this silent classic.

NR A unique glimpse into the world of Phyllis Bronfman Lambert, renowned Canadian architect, urban activist, patron and founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, Citizen Lambert: Joan of Architecture paints a vibrant portrait of a figure so often presented one-dimensionally in the press. The film details Lambert’s many accomplishments—such as commissioning Mies van der Rohe to design the Seagram Building in New York in the 1950s; directing photographic missions from the early 1970s to document historic architecture; her role as an urban guerrilla in the landmark Milton-Parc housing renovation project; founding Heritage Montréal in 1975; and forming the collections which led to her founding the CCA as a research centre and museum.
