Film+Dining Guide designed by Niagara Artists Centre Cover Image: The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Film All Around Us The Film House prides itself on being the conduit between Hollywood and the enchanting universe of film but we were outdone this August when Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer arrived on the PAC doorstep with a crew of hundreds. Taking over the corner of St. Paul and James Streets, Spencer was here as the producer and star of an eight episode series about Madam C.J. Walker, a part of history that’s gone largely untold about the entrepreneur who became America’s first black, self-made female millionaire. If this brush with celebrity isn’t enough, the series is executive produced by none other than pro basketball’s GOAT LeBron James. Seeing the effort, energy, and scope of the production impressed anyone who visited the set and served as a reminder of all that goes into making every moment we experience on the big screen. The crop of films we’re bringing for September and October is a fine harvest of features, with a parade of outstanding docs and classics as complements. Stories of remarkable black lives also make contributions to our calendar with the poetic The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Toni Morrison; The Pieces I Am, a fresh doc about the literary powerhouse who passed this summer. The BUFS season begins with Thursday kick-offs of everything from dark comedy, The Art of Self-Defense, to the quirkiness of director Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go Bernadette?, and the documenting of a great romance, Words of Love, about the life-defining relationship between Marianne Ihlen and Leonard Cohen. Two mini-film festivals are on slate with indigenous film titles as part of Celebration of Nations in September and a sweet ‘n’ condensed festival of films for children coming in October. The calendar comes to a close with not a whimper but a scream with a slew of horror films for Halloween. Jim Jarmusch brings his latest with the star-studded The Dead Don’t Die, High Tension, a French slasher will splatter The Film House walls, and Stephen King’s classic high school prom gone wrong, Carrie, plays on all hallows’ eve. The set for Madam C.J. Walker may be struck and vanished from downtown but the fruits of filmmaking labour can be found at The Film House all year around.
