Niagara is resilient. Our people have an infectious sense of pride and togetherness, championed by our engaged business community, dedicated community organizations and our supportive public sector institutions. We have rallied together to build, to create and to celebrate, in particular around the arts. Our beautiful performing arts centre is a shining example of what is possible when there is a strong, compelling vision shared by all. Now, coming out of the pandemic, we need to rally again to light up our stages that have been dark, and help the arts get back on their feet, regaining the momentum that we once had. I welcome you to join our Board in supporting this amazing upcoming season of brilliant, inspiring and joyful work. Together, we will celebrate our collective achievements once again.

Everybody knows the feeling of spending time with an old friend that you haven’t seen in a very long time, yet it feels like only yesterday when you last spoke. The sense of comfort and familiarity between you only grows with each interaction no matter how many years pass by. Quite simply, being together just feels like home. So many of us throughout the last two years have been separated from each other, yet never far from our minds. The same can be said for the void we’ve experienced without live music, theatre, dance, comedy, and communal cinematic experiences. We’ve missed them dearly, our old friends, yet we know that when we are together again the magic, connection and joy that we feel will be more palpable than ever. Now is finally the time for reconnection, and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre is ready and waiting for you. We can’t wait for you to find your way back, friends. Welcome home. Colleen A. On behalf of the PAC team, I am thrilled to share our 22/23 season with you. It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to present a full season of programming (for reasons we know all too well) and it feels so good to come together once again. There really is nothing like live, communal arts experiences. Music, theatre, dance and circus performances provide us with new worlds and perspectives to contemplate. Our 22/23 season artists will transport us from coast to coast, across the globe and all the way to outer space. We’ll learn about each other from diverse perspectivesfrom traditional East Coast coalminers, to a search for Sacred in the Mojave Desert, to the harrowing journey of Harriet Tubman and fellow Freedom Seekers, to the courageous, first-hand accounts of recent female refugees. We’ll laugh and dance and sing together with each arts experience residing in the tender, invisible truth that we are connected by our shared humanity. If these past few years have taught us nothing else, it’s certainly taught us this.

How to Fail as a Popstar traces Vivek’s story from her early childhood days in Edmonton where she sang Hindu bhajans to impress God on the weekend and New Kids on the Block during the week to impress her classmates; to her teenage years performing in singing competitions at the West Edmonton Mall; recording her first pop album (which was paid for with a $20,000 bank loan co-signed by her mother); and eventually moving to Toronto to pursue her popstar dreams (only to have them thwarted by a domineering, online bingo-addicted manager). Through storytelling, movement and song, Vivek charts her journey to “not quite” pop music superstardom, creating a moving theatrical performance that is a reflection on the power of pop culture, dreams, disappointments, self-determination and finding one’s authentic voice.

PAPER CANOE PROJECTS PROPHECY FOG
PROGRAM
CREATED BY JANI LAUZON A new work by award-winning artist Jani Lauzon, Prophecy Fog begins with a journey into the Mojave Desert in search of Giant Rock, armed with the question: can a site still be sacred if it has been desecrated? We encounter a girl in the mountains of BC with a pocket full of stones, the rainbow warrior’s prophecy, and a mysterious inscription that obscures our past. “We come from the stars, we are star people.” Prophecy Fog weaves together the performance skills of veteran raconteur Jani Lauzon and the expertise of Environmental Designer Melissa Joakim, along with Director Franco Boni to elicit a conscious remembering of ancient prophecies that speak to rock teachings, star beings and earth changes.
From the moment Black people landed on North American soil, their music took root and became the basis of much of the popular music we hear today. There is an endless list of exceptional Black musicians who have been lost to history while their white counterparts gained fame. From church hymnals to the blues, from jazz to rock ’n’ roll, R&B and rap, we owe much of our musical history to Black culture, and it’s time to give credit where it is due. Freedom! was a huge success in Stratford Festival’s recent Cabaret Series and features a company of ten superb Black performers and musicians. Beau Dixon is an award-winning, actor, musician, singer-songwriter, playwright, music director and sound designer. As an actor and musician, he’s performed on numerous theatre stages throughout Canada, the USA and Europe. He’s received two Dora Mavor Moore Awards, a Calgary and Toronto Critics Award and was a finalist for the KM Hunter Award.

Are we not drawn onward to new erA Like its title, this performance is a palindrome. You will be able to see it forwards and backwards. Because some people believe humanity is moving forward, while others believe the opposite. Some say the world is coming to an end, others call them doomsayers. No matter who’s right, in our quest for progress we have dramatically changed the world we live in. Are our actions irreversible or can we undo them? Are we not drawn is therefore presented as a visual metaphormixing movement, theatre and mixed media to deconstruct and then rebuild a world before our very eyes. The influential Belgian company Ontroerend Goed visits St. Catharines for one night only with a conceptually daring, visually stunning performance of environmental apocalypse – with a twist. Join us for this must-see performance event. Technically dazzling, emotionally devastating show about humanity's point of no return.” — TimeOut, UK PARTRIDGE HALL REGULAR $35 MEMBER $30 WED 15 FEB 7PM Photo credit: Miriam Devriendt

When I Crossed That Line to Freedom carries the universal themes of sisterhood, courage, sacrifice and doing what is necessary to keep a family together. Andy Shauf pens songs that explore universal truths through picaresque vignettes, from the colourful people-watching observations of 2016’s The Party to the tale of a failed relationship explained over one night at a local watering hole on last year’s The Neon Skyline But Shauf has never exactly been held up as a confessional sort of songwriter, even though underneath the carefully plotted narratives and conceptual storylines, he’s always been writing about himself. Wilds (2022) might change that. A collection of nine songs culled from around 50 tracks recorded by the prolific Shauf during the writing of The Neon Skyline and presented in a near-unfiltered form, the unstudied rawness of the songs as a peek into the creative process behind a proper Andy Shauf studio album, a snapshot of how the multiinstrumentalist first begins building his songs into more ornately arranged final products.
