“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” ~ James 1:2-4 ~ “It’s been such a stressful day. I just want to sit in my lazyboy and veg out!” Have you ever been there? I know I have. A stressful day at work. A stressful visit to the doctor. A stressful encounter with someone. A stressful look at your checkbook. We’ve all been there — and we don’t much like it! I don’t often talk about what we are doing on Wednesday evenings for adults here at FSBCPV, but while our kids are in AWANA and our teens are at Impact Youth, adults gather in the Worship Center for Bible Study and Prayer. In January we began a study of the book of James I am calling: Work Your Faith. I have to tell you, this is going to be a challenging book to study. We are taking our time in order to grow in our life of faith as much as possible. Last evening, we looked at these verses — well actually, we mostly looked at verse 2. There we discovered the great paradox of the many trials we all must face. Trials come in all shapes and sizes. They come constantly. They come uninvited — after all, who would choose to invite a trial or problem into their life? But come, they do, and when they come they bring the by-product of stress. The truth about stress we discovered last evening is that stress is rather neutral — it’s not necessarily good or bad — it is really how we choose to react to the stress that is the issue. That is where the paradox for the Christian comes into play. We want to run from trials and the stress they bring — or hide — or ignore — or complain — or cry. But James tells us to consider it pure joy. He has got to be kidding. That just seems absurd! Yet that is just what he tells us to do. So the paradox here is that for the Christian, stress is to be countered with joy. The stress trials bring into your life can cause great harm if we react in the wrong ways. Stress can and will cause physical, mental, relational and spiritual damage to our lives. React in the wrong way to stress at it can mean real harm.
The word “consider” means in Greek to “think ahead” or to “think forward”. In other words — the time to consider the trial, that stressful situation in your life as pure joy — is when it is now in your rearview mirror. When we choose joy, we can see a very different outcome to our trials — perseverance — maturity — being complete — lacking nothing that Jesus has for us. Does that mean that we will “enjoy” the trial and stress? Nope! But we can think ahead to the results God has in mind as we go though them. In the Old Testament, Job was going through a really hard time in his life, yet he decided to choose joy. He chose to think ahead. This is what he said in the middle of the stress: “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” ~ Job 23:10 ~ I can’t begin to know the trials and stress that you may be facing this week. But I know who does — and He knows the way you are taking in the middle of the stress. He knows the intended outcome. He invites you to consider it pure joy. He reminds you today that when you think forward, you will know the joy of seeing the stress in the rearview mirror of your life — and you will see the blessings of all that God intends in front of you. So, go head and consider all of the stressful trials in your life this week as pure joy. After all, what do you really have to loose? And remember that we know! We know what? We know the truth of this verse… “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” ~ Romans 8:28 ~ Blessings on your week as you consider it pure joy — right in the middle of your trials. You’ll be glad you did when you look in the rearview mirror! Pastor Terrell P.S. Now is the time! Now is the time to invite every unsaved person you know to attend on Sunday evening, February 12th. Evangelist Richard Hight and his wife Marty will be with us for one service only! Their ministry is VisualMpact. Richard will be doing a large drawing onstage and sharing the gospel. He has been with both Billy Graham and Franklin Graham and now, he will be with us. This is a great evangelistic opportunity — so let’s not miss it!
